MacBook Pro :: 13 Back Ordered At Amazon?

Apr 26, 2010

I ordered a MBP 13" from Amazon 4/20. They estimate shipping between 5/12 and 5/24. Other resellers (e.g., MacMall, MacConnection, BHVideo) appear to have the 13" in stock.

MacBook Pro :: Accidentally Ordered Low Res Screen... How Long Do Returns Take

Apr 13, 2010

I've been waiting for these Arrandale 15" MBPs since December '09, and in my excitement and haste I didn't assess all the options when I ordered my new laptop.I ordered the base 15" model with no changes to it, but I really need the high-res screen. 3 questions for you lovely people:1) Once I get the laptop, I could return it and change it for a one with the hi-res screen. How long does it usually take to return a Macbook Pro and get a new one back again?

2) If, once I recieve the laptop, I drove to my nearest Apple Store (about 60 miles away- I'm in UK), could I simply hand them my unopened laptop and ask for an exchange for one with a hi-res screen?

3) I noticed a hi-res, anti-glare option. Does anybody know if the anti-glare option still has that ugly grey surroun

MacBook Air :: Unable To Install Amazon Cloud Drive

May 21, 2012

I downloaded the new Mac OS X client for Amazon's Cloud Drive service. I double-clicked to launch it, then dragged the app icon over to the Applications folder in order to install it.

Now I see an Amazon Cloud Drive icon on my desktop, but clicking it doesn't take me to a signin screen for my Amazon account, as I would expect, but invites me to drag the app icon over to the Applications folder AGAIN. Starting from the Applications folder and trying to launch it from there gives me the same result.

Safari Freezes When Loading Amazon

Jun 13, 2012

I am currently using Safari ver 5.1.7. I have Adblock installed. I am not sure why but Safari always freezes when I try to load amazon.com and usually leads to Safari asking that web pages are not responding and that I have to reload the pages. Reloading it leads to the same thing happening again unless I close the window or tab that has amazon.com loading inside it. I have not experienced this with any other websites so far. Oct 31, 2009

Im going to throw out a scenario and see if anyone sees flaw in my logic.I first will mention that I will stick with console gaming and wont play games on the imac, although I thought in 07 there was a youtube video of someone playing crysis on a 2600GT imac (im not sure what the real graphics card was or if thats even a real one). I will be editing photos using aperture or some other photo editor, running Vuze nonstop, 12 tab browsing, and also probably watching a movie. Hardware :: Amazon Reveals All - New Kindle Ebook App For Apple IPad

Mar 22, 2010

In addition to their own respective e-ink hardware devices, booksellers Amazon and Barnes & Noble will also release their own separate digital bookstores for Apple's iPad and other touchscreen tablet devices. Both companies revealed to The New York Times that they will create new digital readers and storefronts in addition to their existing applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. The App Store software will also compete with Apple's own iBooks application and accompanying iBookstore, which will also be available for download on the App Store rather than coming preinstalled on the device.

In particular, the Kindle application from Amazon was demonstrated to a Times reporter. It features the ability to slowly turn pages with fingers, much like Apple's own iBooks software. "It also presents two new ways for people to view their entire e-book collection, including one view where large images of book covers are set against a backdrop of a silhouetted figure reading under a tree," the report said. "The sun's position in that image varies with the time of day.".....................

Hardware :: Unboxed - Amazon Kindle 2 Gets IPod Treatment - Sell?

Feb 27, 2009

Amazon's second generation of its Kindle ebook reader takes cues from Apple in hopes to make the new product the "iPod of books." Here's a graphical tour of how close Amazon comes to replicating the iPod experience. A much smaller box Compared to the giant box that the original Kindle came in, the Kindle 2 ships in a tiny package the size of a textbook. To slim down, Amazon dropped the large hard-bound book volume case it shipped with the original model.

The smaller packaging will also save Amazon money in materials and shipping. The company already streamlines the ordering process to associate the unit's serial number with an Amazon user account so that the device is ready to go as soon as it is received. It's in the company's interests to push its readers to adopt the Kindle because sending digital books to their Kindle incurs none of the warehousing and shipping of heavy books. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that Kindle e-books now make up 10 percent of the online retailer's total book sales for the books that are available in kindle format (statement clarified - ed)......................

Hardware :: Amazon Unveils 9.7 - Inch Kindle DX With Focus On Education

May 6, 2009

Amazon on Tuesday introduced the Kindle DX, a new multi-purpose version of its digital eBook reader that, thanks to a 2.5 times larger screen, is garnering the support of several universities, newspapers and textbook publishers who've announce pilot programs around the device. Thinner than most magazines at just over a third of an inch, the $489 Kindle DX sports a large 9.7-inch e-ink paper display with 16 shades of gray, making it ideal for newspapers, magazines, and graphic-rich textbooks that include an assortment of images, tables, charts, and equations.

Also new to the DX model is an Auto-Rotation feature for displaying content in landscape or portrait mode, and a built-in PDF reader leveraging Adobe Reader Mobile technology. Like other types of documents on Kindle, users can email their PDF format documents to their Kindle email address or move them over using a USB connection. Each Kindle DX ships with 3.3 GB of memory, which Amazon says is sufficient for storing up to 3,500 books, or more than double that of the Kindle 2 (unboxing, review). The online bookseller will also automatically back up a copy of every Kindle book purchased so users can wirelessly re-download titles from their library at any time....................

Hardware :: Interest In Amazon Kindle Wanes Following Apple IPad Unveiling

Mar 5, 2010

While most who currently own an e-reader have a Kindle from Amazon, a new survey found that a majority of consumers who intend to buy an e-reader in the near future will opt instead for the Apple iPad. ChangeWave recently conducted a survey of 3,171 consumers the week after Apple announced the iPad, and the results suggest that the forthcoming device is poised to make a huge splash in the e-reader market. "In particular, while a handful of e-Reader manufacturers -- most prominently Amazon -- clearly have a major head start," ChangeWave said, "the survey findings show the iPad is poised to profoundly shake up this market."

Among those who plan to purchase an e-reader in the next 90 days, 40 percent said they will buy the Apple iPad. That's well ahead of the 28 percent who will opt for an Amazon Kindle, 6 percent for the Barnes & Noble Nook and 1 percent for a Sony Reader. That would be a major change for the Kindle, which is currently the far-and-away market leader. The ChangeWave survey found that 68 percent of respondents who already own an e-reader have the Kindle, while just 10 percent have a Sony Reader. "While the iPad launch is likely to strengthen overall e-Reader demand, the survey suggests Amazon and its competitors could well find themselves relegated to playing catch-up within just a few quarters if they don't preemptively move quickly to upgrade their own e-Reader products," the analysis firm surmised......................

Hardware :: Higher Amazon E-book Prices Expected To Coincide With IPad Launch

Feb 8, 2010

Amazon and publisher Macmillan finalized their agreement for higher-priced e-books over the weekend. The deal is expected to serve as a template for other publishers, and the new prices should take effect in March, when Apple's iPad goes on sale. While Amazon said a week ago it would "ultimately" have to concede to Macmillan's demands for higher e-book prices, a formal settlement between the two companies came over the weekend, and Macmillan-published books went back on sale on Amazon.com. The Wall Street Journal noted that the agreement between the two parties will likely "set the stage" for changes in the e-book market in 2010, as Apple enters the fray with its new iPad."By agreeing to accept a new pricing model, Amazon has publicly acknowledged the sudden emergence of a rival that may not only threaten its highly popular Kindle franchise but also its total domination of e-books," the report said. It noted that new, higher prices, at least for Macmillan, would begin when the iPad goes on sale in March. It is Apple's entrance into the e-book market, with its new iBooks application and accompanying iBookstore, that has caused a new rift between publishers and Amazon. Following Macmillan's lead, Hachette Book Group and HarperCollins have both announced their intent to ink new deals with more flexible price structuring with Amazon.

Based on their content deals with Apple, publishers will offer new hardcover bestsellers for between $12.99 and $14.99 on the iPad's iBookstore. Publishers want to offer books under the same pricing structure on Amazon's Kindle.Last week, Hachette CEO David Young said the price increase is not a way for publishers to make more money on books. In fact, he said, they will make less on each e-book sale under the new model, but authors and agents will be able to make money on every digital sale. He and others in the publishing world believe the new prices will "protect the long term viability of the book marketplace."

While Amazon has dominated the e-book market since its e-ink Kindle reader debuted in 2007, Apple's entrance with its $499 iPad has forced the bookseller to renegotiate its content deals under pressure from publishers. With Hachette, Macmillan and HarperCollins, three of the five major publishers highlighted by Apple at its iPad unveiling have revealed their interest in higher e-book prices. The moves confirm comments from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who said that publishers were upset with Amazon and could begin to pull their content from the bookseller. Declining to elaborate, he simply said that the Kindle and iPad would offer bestsellers at "the same" prices. The Journal also noted that the only major publisher that has not struck a deal with Apple for iPad content is Random House. The company is said to be "studying the matter."

Software :: Amazon Releases Free Beta Of Kindle For Mac EBook Reading Software

Mar 18, 2010

With Apple's eBook-capable iPad looming ominously in the face Amazon's fledgeling electronic book business, the online bookseller on Thursday released a new application for Mac users as part of its ongoing bid to promote its proprietary Kindle platform and prevent defection of its existing user base to a emerging array of alternatives. Released as a free beta application for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and higher, the software allows Mac users to purchase and download from Amazon's growing catalog of over 450,000 eBooks without the need to purchase its $259 Kindle 2 or larger $489 Kindle DX hardware. With the release, Amazon notes that Kindle books can now be read on many of the world's most popular digital devices, including the iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, Windows PC, Mac, and soon the iPad.

"Kindle for Mac is the perfect companion application for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX," said Jay Marine, director, Amazon Kindle. "For those customers around the world who don't yet have a Kindle, Kindle for Mac is a great way to instantly access and read the most popular new releases as well as their old favorites." Kindle for Mac features Amazon's Whispersync technology that automatically saves and synchronizes bookmarks and last page read across devices. This way, customers reading Kindle books on a Kindle, Kindle DX, or one of the free Kindle applications, can always have their reading with them and never lose their place.........................
