MacBook :: Media Library Backup To Minimize Data Loss
Jan 16, 2009
So I recently "downgraded" from an octocore Mac Pro to a AluMacBook 2.4. All sadness aside, I'm loving the form factor, the portability and the light up keyboard. I have a series of questions related to my overflowing media library (as my Mac Pro was acting as my media server).
1. I've become attached to the idea of installing two disks into my MacBook by removing the optical drive. I've done the appropriate amount of research to determine feasibility (it IS indeed possible). But I wonder, could I RAID these disks together in a striped array (0?). I tried launching the RAID Utility on my MacBook and it says "it is not supported with this computer". I plan on maintaining a Time Capsule backup of the RAID as often as possible to minimize data loss should something happen.
2. The reason I'm looking to RAID is because my iTunes library is currently just a bit bigger than any 500GB disk I could fit into my MacBook. So as a "just in case" question, does anyone know if I can spread my iTunes library across multiple places? Say, for example, I want iTunes to manage all my "audio" files on my internal disk and all my "TV shows and movies" on an external or the other internal... is that possible?

I would like to partition my internal 750GB HD into two parts. One for Media, and one for the OS and applications.
Is this possible without data loss? If so How? Should I clone my Macbook, reinstal the OS, and partition, then move media into the partition?

When I run my macbook pros Battery down, there comes the low battery warning. After a while the system just goes down without suspending anything to my harddisk. When I restart my computer it does a normal start and after logging in I'm experiencing a lot messages due to the reset time. I correct my system-time and restart my mac and the system is back to normal.
Usually I'd say: Replace your CMOS-Battery (I know I have an EFI-Firmware), but where is it?. Or in other words: Is there a "System"-Battery, that would prevent my mac from forgetting the time?
Since I'm not running down my battery to 0 very often I only experience this issue from time to time and never took time to do anything about it.
iStats battery-Status says: Health:83%, Cycles:333, charge 50%...

I have two USB hard drives connected to my iMac. Since installing SL, I have experienced data loss on both. Example: I open a folder in the Finder. I then CMD-UP to move to the next level up, only to find that the folder I was just viewing is no longer in the list.

Yesterday I upgraded to the latest MacBook Pro (13 inch. 2.4 gig) and have a wifi connection issue. Whenever I start data transfer over wifi to my NAS, airport loses the connection after 2 minutes and obviously the transfer is discontinued. In a normal usage mode (Web browsing, mail and so forth) the thing works perfectly.
(This is my first mac, I tried to find topics related to that particular data transfer issue yet without success, sorry in case this is a well known issue).

Will I lose my settings, programs, and preferences, if I boot from the system discs and run a Repair Disk from Disk Utility? I've been having some startup problems, like a circle with a slash and it's been mentioned that I may need to do this.

Used Migration Assistant to move everything from iMac 24" running OS 10.6 to new iMac 27" running OS 10.7. Multiple data files didn't get transferred. One was part of entrys in address book. Is there anyway to manually transfer the data over? Where are the data files located?

Okay, so I just installed a 750 GB hard drive in the optibay. I currently have my iTunes library on it, but I was wondering if there was an easy way to move all my media/data folders over to it so they dont take up space on my SSD.

Just to let everybody know, I found a pretty straightforward way to do this without having to mess with every single app's preferences. I have a 13 mbp and I replaced the HDD with an intel SSD. The original HDD went into the optibay instead of the superdrive. At first I just moved my whole home folder to the HDD, so that iTunes, iPhoto and everything else would have worked on there not filling up the SSD with unnecessary stuff. But then I felt like my HDD was spinning most of the time and I read that, as I thought, it is better to leave the ~/Library folder on the SSD to avoid this, since every running app basically reads and writes to this folder all the time. So here's what I did:
1) I moved the home folder back to the SSD, copying my ~/Library folder from the HDD in there (this is its default location so you don't have to do anything if you never changed it.

I am not being able to sync my iPad, after having been using it for more than a year now! I had been syncing my iPad2 with iTunes on my Windows Vista machine. After my Windows Vista Laptop crashed, I replaced it with a Macbook Air 128GB (MBA). Since hard disk space on the MBA is at a premium, I transferred my iTunes Media Library to a 64 GB USB drive.
Now I tried to sync my iPad with iTunes on my MBA. iTunes on MBA saw my iPad: sync started: backing up completed without any hitch: and then came the error message "The iPad 'Rishav's iPad' cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 7.88 GB required)". I checked the available memory on my MBA, USB and iPad.
Details:
a. HDD of MBA: 86.6 GB out of 120.47 GB Free.
b. USB Drive where iTunes Media Library is located: 39.93 GB out of 64 GB Available.
c. iPad 2: 7.7 GB out of 58.1 GB Available.
Despite this availability of free memory, the sync is not going through. The memory utilization within my iPad, as seen graphically on iTunes on my MBA (when iPad is connected to MBA) is as follows:
a. Audio: 8.10 GB
b. Video: 7.30 GB
c. Photos: 7.50 GB
d. Apps: 14.00 GB
e. Books: 1.01 GB
f. Others: 2.60 GB
g. Free: 17.94 GB
How I can carry out my sync.

At this point I wish I just got a MacPro instead, this wouldn't be a question. I have a new 17"uMBP, bought specifically to take advantage of eSATA through the expresscard slot. I do photography and video work. I bought the best possible card, the Sonnet Tempo dual eSATA, to offer highest transfer speed and because it's the newest technology. To accommodate my media I bought a OWC Mercury Elite Al-Pro 2TB RAID 0. It's great. I wish I got the Qx2 RAID 5 but it's a little pricey and expensive to upgrade, but at least it has redundancy. I need to have a reliable backup solution. Drobo is expandable but I've seen so many poor reviews. I could buy another Al-Pro 2TB RAID 0 and connect them both and do a software RAID 1 with them. Or I could buy a cheap 2TB eSATA external and do daily backups. I could also get a dock and fill up drives as needed. Is there really an advantage to mirroring other than if my drive fails in the middle of a job? Wouldn't the software RAID needlessly slow down my system? Even if I did get the Qx2 RAID 5 it is bad to rely on such a system by itself to both store and backup my media or is it in itself a very reliable solution?

To be the BBC's most shared story CANNOT be good news for Apple. I'm amazed there hasn't been a press release on this because, now it's so big in the press, journalists will now just pounce on it and start tearing Apple to pieces. Years of Macs are better than PCs ads are not a good thing to have done when MS have got a new, great, stable OS and Apple are now offering an incredibly unstable, unreliable one.

I have a number of iTunes libraries, and for the "supplementary" ones, I set the preferences so that iTunes does not copy the media to the Library, instead it just references it.Usually the original media is on a disk other than the one the Library is located on.However I have noticed that when I do this, and add media to the Library, it changes the modification date of all the original media files. This is very impolite and improper behaviour. Why does iTunes change the modification date? For a start, all my backups are made out of sync, because they now think these files have been changed when they haven't.Is there any way to stop this and make iTunes play nice?I haven't tried making the files "read only" but frankly one should not need to do that to avoid the problem (and maybe iTunes would spit the dummy with read only files?).

Can one itunes library.itl file be used for music in two different itunes media files? I have an Air. Want to have music in MP3 format on the Air and the same music in Lossless format on a large external HD. Would like same playlists etc for both types. Lossless takes up too much room on the Air but for playing tunes on the road, MP3 is fine. Want to keep same music as Lossless for archiving and for playing on very good speakers at times; would be kept on the external HD. Would like to have the same playlists, ratings, etc., for music that is in both MP3 and Lossless format. For example, rating Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album as a 5 for both the tracks that are in MP3 format (that live on the Air) and the same tracks in Lossless format (that reside on the external HD). I realize I could have separate iTunes folders on the Air and the Ext HD but then would have to duplicate all the data on playlists, ratings, etc. for the two independent iTunes folders.Â

Working on an iMac with a FCX library that links to an external media folder which has all my video. I'm not using managed media, but external links to the video source footage.Â
I make an exact duplicate copy of my FCX library on a USB drive, including the external media folder with all my video clips -- using the same folder structure and everything, But when I move that to another computer (MacBook Pro), open the exact same FCX library, open the same project -- I get missing links on every clip on my timeline. The library doesn't connect to the external media folder.Â
Re-linking causes an error and doesn't work either. The FCX library just won't take my "external media" folder which it links to fine on my iMac. All my projects on my MacBook Pro, have red "missing file" icons instead of the clips.Â
Running FCX 10.1.4. and Yosemite.Â

I've been trying vigorously to connect my itunes library with my Time Capsule Media files. So that I can keep the music I acually listen to on my Macbrook Pro's harddrive but have the rest of my music stored onto my time capsule and listen to when I am at home. What I thought to do was put the music i listen to in the itunes library folder on the harddrive and then change the media location to the TC media file folder.Turns out my idea was wrong.. any others care to elaborate on this issue? I'm pretty much confused with this and i haven't been able to find it on the forums anywhere

I have imported a number of Caf del Mar CD's to iTunes, and iTunes keeps scattering the tunes into several different folders in iTunes Media. It also has trouble finding album information, unless it has been downloaded from iTunes Store. Previous versions of iTunes I have tried didn't have this problem.I've tried to tidy the files manually in iTunes Media, but that usually results in duplicates, so I stopped messing with it. I actually wouldn't mind iTunes blowing up my albums into a nightmare file structure of hyper categorization in iTunes Media (Album, Album Artist, Artist, etc.) if only it recognised its own mess when I transfer the library from one iTunes library into another.
An example: I downloaded Cafe del Mar - Essential Elements featuring 13 tunes, two of these can be found in the files Cafe del Mar/Cafe del Mar Essential Elements, iTunes also created the folder Cafe del Mar/Cafe del_Mar Essential Elements containing 0 tunes!?! and the rest of the tunes are found under Rue de Soleil in the root folder, indicating ONE of the artists as the criteria for creating a folder of tunes!?!
I am trying with every fiber NOT to hate this program, and would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how I can move an iTunes Media library of aprox 54 gb from my desktop via an external harddisk onto my laptop. I have tried 4 times, and everytime the result varies. Sometime I transfer 3000 files, other times 4000. Which files follow and don't is random. I lose files tranferring to the external harddisk and lose even more files from the external disk to the new library on my Lap. Do I have to transfer song for song or can this genius program actually transfer a larger amount of files without losing half the files and duplicating the rest?
Is there a limit of size or amount of files?

I've searched through all of the threads pertaining to this issue and i've yet to find a solid, good answer. Basically, I have a macbook pro retina machine with 250 GB. I have over 100 movies purchased in iTunes as well as multiple TV shows that if I were to attempt to download onto my local disk the shear size would make my HDD . Â
I have a 1TB external drive and am just wanting to make hard copies of all of my videos and music on my external. Is there a specific way to use my external disk to not only backup my computer via time machine, but to also use it to backup all of my videos and music. I don't mind watching all of my content via the iCloud but I'm having difficulties creating a library on my external and then using that to download all of my movies. As I can't download all of them on my local disk and then transfer a copy, I need to figure out a way to set up my library on the external disk and then download everything to the external.Just to clarify my questions to you powers at be: Â
1. I need to set up a library on my external drive that I can download all of my media to.
2. I want to still be able to use itunes on my macbook and just watch all of my media/music on the icloud
3. Can I still use the same drive that has all of my backed up media as a backup through time machine as well? Â Â
I've scoured all of the forums and really all I could find was how to set up libraries on an external disk. None of them ever mention whether or not I can basically use my itunes library locally however I want, knowing that everything I've ever bought is backed up on my external.

I recently went into the Apple store looking for a way to perform a backup of data on my MacBook. Their solution was that with a MAC it was not really necessary. However, if I really felt that I needed to backup data, consider using ICLOUD. I do not see how to do this on my MacBook. Can I have some more detail regarding backup of my data. I want to back up Excel files, bank statements, etc.

I moved my entire 1.4TB iTunes folder to my Drobo. Then I went into preferences and changed the iTunes Media Folder Location, and I also have Keep iTunes music folder organized. That worked fine all of the music, movies and TV shows opened up fine. Than after adding a new HDD to my drobo I opened my iTunes and all of a sudden it gives me the ! next to all my files and wants me to locate them, and the folder is still the same in the folder location. Is there anyway to fix this, or to automatically reconnect all my media instead of doing it 1 by 1.

I have a Macbook Pro Late 2008 Model and have both my Iphone and iPad synced to it.I intend to save all my data from the macbook to a Time Machine and then sell my macbook as I intend to buy a new one this July.
1) would I be able to retrieve all my settings and data from the Time Machine to my new Macbook.
2) Would my iPhone and iPad Sync with the new macbook or would I need to set up a new sync ? I am hoping once I am able to retrieve all my settings and data from Time Machine to the New Macbook both my iPhone and iPad would be able to sync without requiring the need for a new sync setup .

I've followed several tutorials on how to get this done, as it seems so simple but it's not working on my end. I've moved the iTunes folder from the /music/ to an external hard drive. I'm opening iTunes, going to Preferences, Advanced, and replacing the iTunes Media folder location to the correct one /Volumes/Volume E/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media Â
I'm checking Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library, clicking on the "OK" button, and nothing happens.Â
Funny enough, Spotify finds it in seconds and I can play my music from that player instead.
