MacBook :: Best Backup Of Data On It?
May 19, 2012
I recently went into the Apple store looking for a way to perform a backup of data on my MacBook. Their solution was that with a MAC it was not really necessary. However, if I really felt that I needed to backup data, consider using ICLOUD. I do not see how to do this on my MacBook. Can I have some more detail regarding backup of my data. I want to back up Excel files, bank statements, etc.

When i try to backup data or transfer large amounts of data, like 40gb or more, between drives, the process just stops without warning or explanation. It dowsn't matter when backup i use, Time Machine or WD Smartware.

I have a Macbook Pro Late 2008 Model and have both my Iphone and iPad synced to it.I intend to save all my data from the macbook to a Time Machine and then sell my macbook as I intend to buy a new one this July.
1) would I be able to retrieve all my settings and data from the Time Machine to my new Macbook.
2) Would my iPhone and iPad Sync with the new macbook or would I need to set up a new sync ? I am hoping once I am able to retrieve all my settings and data from Time Machine to the New Macbook both my iPhone and iPad would be able to sync without requiring the need for a new sync setup .

I was going to get a 500GB hard drive to replace my 160GB hard drive in my white macbook. I was wondering where's the best place to backup the data online before changing it out? Carbonite?

So I recently "downgraded" from an octocore Mac Pro to a AluMacBook 2.4. All sadness aside, I'm loving the form factor, the portability and the light up keyboard. I have a series of questions related to my overflowing media library (as my Mac Pro was acting as my media server).
1. I've become attached to the idea of installing two disks into my MacBook by removing the optical drive. I've done the appropriate amount of research to determine feasibility (it IS indeed possible). But I wonder, could I RAID these disks together in a striped array (0?). I tried launching the RAID Utility on my MacBook and it says "it is not supported with this computer". I plan on maintaining a Time Capsule backup of the RAID as often as possible to minimize data loss should something happen.
2. The reason I'm looking to RAID is because my iTunes library is currently just a bit bigger than any 500GB disk I could fit into my MacBook. So as a "just in case" question, does anyone know if I can spread my iTunes library across multiple places? Say, for example, I want iTunes to manage all my "audio" files on my internal disk and all my "TV shows and movies" on an external or the other internal... is that possible?

I have a 500gb HDD coming from newegg for my new 13" MBP. I know how to take it apart and all that, but my question is how do I 'clone' the drive to get it from the stock drive to the new HDD? I have a 160gb external drive, could I use this as a time machine backup and then pop the new drive in, install leopard from the DVDs that came with my mac, and then restore time machine backup?

The hard drive on my old Power Mac G4 recently failed and I lost all my data. I have I backup of my Tiger installation, but no way to restore it - I have no other Mac computers, just Windows ones. I also don't have any OS X installation discs. Is there any way I could format and restore the files to my hard drive from Windows?

Older G4 desktop is getting old and tricky to start up so I figure it is a good idea to back up everything quickly in case it bites the dust.
Want to back up (and update that back up regularly) all data, including my email messages and mail organisation.

I just bought two 2 TB Hitachi's. One I will use for all of my data and the other one for backup. (my main drive is an SSD) Can someone suggest the best solution as to how to configure the backup drive? Should I set it up RAID-1 so it will always mirror the other drive? Or, should I set it up to run a nightly clone using Data Backup 3.0?

After a catastrophic HD crash I bought a small 250GB external hard-drive an started to use Time machine. Since my Mac was freshly formatted, I tend to keep it tidy and clean and keep good track of what comes in. I noticed my time machine backing up 15 GB of data which allegedly would have been added within two days. I could absolutely not trace this on my computer nor when I compared current folder contents with the most recent backup. Downloads, Apps., System are all excluded from my time-machine and couldn't represent such a dramatic data increase on my separate HD.

I'm doing an initial backup to a Time Capsule and I want to make sure all my data was copied successfully. Does Time Machine verify that the data was copied successfully or does it just send it and hope everything copied alright? I know this is the kind of question only the Apple developers would know for certain, but hey, sometimes folks on these forums are surprisingly knowledgeable so I figured I'd ask here.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I'm getting a new macbook. Currently I use time machine as a backup tool and was wondering if I should use it to transfer all my data to the new mac. One benefit of a new harddrive is the fresh install without all the junk that has built up over the years right? So wouldn't time machine just be transferring all the junk and stuff I want to the new mac? or is time machine smarter than this.

So I just successfully migrated all of my data and settings from my old iMac to my new 27 inch iMac using the Time machine backup on my Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive. Aside from the Time machine backup folder I also dragged a few other things over to the external hard drive because there was so much extra space on it. The drive is not partitioned.
So I'd like to start using Time machine with this new 27 inch iMac but the empty space that's left on the external hard drive is barely large enough to cover what I now have on the internal hard drive on my new 27 inch iMac. If I were to remove the Time machine backup from my old iMac there would be plenty of space again unless starting Time Machine on this new 27 inch iMac will just copy right over that backup file? Everything on this new iMac, the data and settings and so forth, is exactly the same. So is the user account. However the previous Mac was running Leopard while this new iMac is running Snow Leopard.
So if it doesn't copy over the old backup it will just create a new backup file? And if it does create a new backup file is there any point to keeping the old backup file since I no longer have the old iMac and wouldn't be able to access it again? Obviously if I didn't have to keep it I could erase it which would create plenty of extra space for me to start using Time machine again but with this new iMac.

We are a PC to Mac convert and still trying to understand some basics. We have an iMac 21.5 and expecting delivery of a external 1.5 TD drive. More than we'll even need, but dirt cheap. We also run Windows 7 64 bit through VMware Fusion. The only reason for that is the Windows version of Quicken is a better product the the Mac version.
We will back up pics, Videos, etc., on the iMac under MacOs with Time Machine. Can Time Machine also backup the quicken data files from the Windows 7 VM machine? I hoping we do not need to maintain separate backup drives to manage the different type of file formats between Windows and Mac. I hoping this can be managed through one place...Time Machine.

My gf connected my external 250GB drive to her computer and somehow managed to choose it as her time machine-drive and backed up to it. Is there any way I can retrieve my lost data? We're talking two complete albums of my own written and produced music, several years of photos and school work plus like 40-50 movies.
