So my MBP was really making horrible clicking noise and I figured out that my start up Lion OSX disk partition is corrupted. I have three partitions. One for Lion OS X, another for Documents and another for Movies and Downloads. When I run disk utility and verify other two partitions(documents and movies/downloads), they appear to be okay but when I do the same with Lion OS X then it says:

Or will it be okay if I just format my 500gb hard drive completely and install the fresh copy of Lion OS X again? I don't have a recovery disc or what so ever provided by Apple anymore. I have a DMG installation file of Lion OS X and a USB flash drive(4 GB approx). How can I repair the disk partition without the recovery start up disc?

So my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this: "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means.The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing.

I edited a wedding on Final Cut studio. Both the software as well as all my uploaded footage collected on an external harddrive. BOOM My hard drive completely becomes corrupt and I can't mount it (meaning my computer doesn't recognize the drive). I then purchased a data-recovery software and, after about two hours, recovered the corrupted files. I then downloaded "VLC" as well as "DIGITAL REBELLION" to repair the files and they cannot seem to do so. Case and point I need these MOV. files as soon as possible and I turn to this forum for guidance of any kind. My Mac is a desktop iMac. It's completely updated and I'm running on iOS X 7.3.

My MacBook is unable to boot. Whenever I try to boot, the spinning circle and the progress bar appears on the grey screen, but when the progress bar reaches about 40%, the computer shuts itself down. I started in Verbose Mode and tried AppleJack, and it said my harddisk needs to be repaired; but AppleJack is unable to do that. (Error Messages: "Invalid node structure" and "Incorrect number of thread records) I then tried to startup with both Recovery HD and Mac OS X Install DVD and ran the Disk Utility on both of the startups. At the First Aid tab, I selected my Hard Drive (not the Hitachi one, the Macintosh HD one) and clicked on Repair Disk. The error messages I got from Repair Disk were:Invalid volume file countInvalid node structureThe volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore your backed-up files. And, lastly, the following popup message appeared:Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. Not being sure how to back-up my files using Disk Utility, I plugged in an external HDD to my USB port and clicked on the Restore tab in the Disk Utility. I have a strange "/private" folder in my root directory (Macintosh HD) after a Time Capsule restore today. The folder is ~5GB in size, and appears to have been created during the restore process. The files in the folder have strange-appearing "system" file type names. Can I safely delete this folder? Not sure why its there, but given its size, I'd prefer to delete it.

i had a 2006 macbook core duo that ran really nice with snow leopard, recently the logic board died so it hasn't been used for a month, i got parts from my friend and now running a 1.83ghz core 2 duo logicboard in its place. the big problem what i think is the hard drive got corrupted due to the bad logic board, when i first put the hard drive back in it wouldn't boot except into safe mode and after i repaired permissions it would boot. however it still starts up slow and os performance seems sluggish and if i run disk utility it always has permissions to fix and takes forever.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a single processor G5 1.8 running current version of Tiger 10.4.11. I take pictures on my Canon 1D ll and also on a Canon power shot pro 1. When I tried to copy files from my compact flash card to my G5, it corrupted most of the files. When I pull them up, half of the image is distorted or discolored. I am using a cheap non-powered USB 2.0 card reader attached to the high speed USB ports. I have tried all of the ports. My other devices, Keyboard, printer, scanner (all self powered) work fine on the USB ports. I can do the same hookup on my G4 Ibook and it works fine with no problems. I also tried importing directly from the camera into I-photo and had the same problem on the G5.

For the past few months, I've tried to restore my iPod Classic because it randomly restarts itself, not to mention moving on the following song during the middle of a song that is already playing. However, it seems iTunes won't restore it. The following message appears every time I try to do this:

But that website simply doesn't help me out. I've taken my iMac to a Genius and he basically said that something is corrupted in OS X. I should mention the fact that programs such as Onyx and Maintenance claim that I am not the admin when in fact, my account is the only account on the computer. The funny thing was that I created a new account and restored the iPod through there, it would work just fine.
So, besides that long explanation of my problem, is there anyway I can fix this without having to resort to placing all my files on an external and installing a clean copy of OS X? Would archiving and installing back to Leopard do the trick?
I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.
After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.
I've repaired my permissions via OS restore disc...and Drive Genius...and whenever I repair...I never get a "clean" repair log? Any ideas>>

The messages on screen is that disk can not be read and invitation to reformat it. I found special software for recovering files from corrupted drives but it is not affordable for a student like me. I've tried to find in forums and word of mouth some shareware/freeware working on Mac OS 10.3.9 but all I got is programs that take space on HD and do nothing, that is, software that is about selling and marketing stuff, not the real thing. Tried with 3 different such a programs, sheer time wasting. I found that this area is pretty much absolutely dark. Do experienced fellow mac users know about some truly working shareware/freeware that can help me retrieve the files from this corrupted Sandisk USB flash drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer crashed when I was playing a DVD. It is a 500g hard drive and is 250G full, mostly music, some movies, and photos. I have lots of email as well. I have an old time machine backup but there were 3 months of unsaved data such as new movie downloads, ipad sync'ing, photos, and music I need to retrieve. I stopped running time machine because the external drive filled up and I was going to buy a new one.
I was able to reinstall the OS again over the old one and login however the old login was saved as a backup and a new user name was created. The permissions were all messed up and I could not reassign the old user name with the old programs and settings. The computer then crashed again before I could back anything up. Now if you try to reinstall the OS again the CD's crash and it wont finish. If you try to boot with the CD you can go to the Utility section and see that the drive says it's failing. I'm not sure how to back all the files.
Is there a way to remove the corrupt drive and later mount it as an external drive to the new one? I'm worried that I won't be able to back the files up if I connect a new external drive.

Yesterday, I stuck the upgrade DVD in and started the upgrade. Half way through the process it rebooted. At this point a big warning sign came up saying there has been errors, please reboot (I haven't seen this again). The current situation is that the macbook (Black 250gb) boots for around 20 seconds (grey screen with apple and ajax style loader gif thing) before powering down. Attempted remedies and outcomes. I have reinserted snow leopard and leopard to check the disc utility. It tells me quite quickly that the disk needs repairing. On clicking repair, it tells me that it requires me to backup erase/install. I have attached the mac to a macbook pro (the one I'm writing on) using target mode. The host (this one) cannot see the disk in finder mode but can in disk utility. The hard drive of the target is grayed out and i cannot right click for further options (such as reveal).
I have tried starting in single user mode but I get the following message: Singleuser boot fsck not done. I have tried starting in verbose mode but i get an I/O disk error and then it turns itself off. I have tried to force mount the target in terminal but it says resource busy. I only have myself to blame as it is inexcusable not to backup prior to an upgrade. I'm just so used to mac products working perfectly. To make matters worse, the last backup was on a hard drive which i have just found out is also corrupt (and my itouch stopped working today too!). So basically I have no backup. To portray the gravity of the situation, the info on the computer is a 1.5 year project. that's basically over a 5th of my life that I may have to repeat! The problem (from reading) is that the file structure is messed up. I'm sure that my files are there, it's just I can't access them.
My question is simple. How can I find and copy files from the broken macbook to this new and working macbook pro.
1. I do occasional maintenance with onyx and have been getting a few startup disk errors in recent months. These seem to get repaired and the computer still functions as normal. I have never had these before in 8 years of using osx so they do worry me. Is the osx boot drive just a bit corrupted? Would a simple reinstall help or is the hd showing signs of failure?
2. The trash simply refuses to empty. The operation can�t be completed because you don�t have permission to access some of the items.
I've tried to bring the items back to the desktop and the folder they came from but they simply make a copy of them. I've tried the option key method and sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash + sudo rm -rf /Users/user_name/.Trash in the terminal but get no change
My friends iBook hard drive has crashed and I'm in the process of replacing it. However, he had a lot of important data on that hard drive that he needs recovered. Is there any software that you can recommend (for Windows or OS X) that will recover data from corrupt/bad hard drives? I have software for NTFS/FAT32 but don't know of any good ones for HFS.
View 14 Replies View Relatedl I now have to completely wipe, re-format and re-load OSX onto my iMac's internal HD, My iMac is a late 2009 27" and at present has OSX 10.8.5 loaded, ( loaded but with many miss-functions ). Prior to the problem the iMac was running OSX Lion, what version though I can't remember.I installed 10.8.5 the other day to see if that would fix things, but it hasn't. It was not a "clean install", just regular one from downloaded OSX 10.8.5.
I have run Disk Utility and TechTool Pro' 7 to try to make repairs to address the problems so far to no avail. Main problems are that my most used applications, FCP-7 Studio, Aperture and Photoshop CS5 amongst others, open but then immediately crash. I've reloaded the troubled applications, de-installed them properly with de-installation app's then clean re-installed them, but that's made no difference. They will not mount.
I reckon there must be a fault or corruption on the HD, probably caused during the Optimisation as everything was functioning well before I did that. So, the only OSX install disks I have are the original disks that came with the iMac, OSX 10.6.2 and a Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD OSX 10.6. I do have the downloaded copy of OSX Mountain Lion that I pulled from the App Store the other day and that copy is now on an external USB / Firewire 800 HD.
As I said I would like to be able to clean off the iMac's internal 2tb drive completely and install a fresh newer OSX. If I first have to load OSX.6.2 then upgrade via the App Store that's fine, but I'd rather just go straight to Mountain Lion if possible. Whatever works best. Getting rid of any corruption on the iMac's HD is the prime motivation.
All my applications and files are backed up to a 2tb LaCie external drive.The iMac has approximately 900 gb's of content onboard and the rest is free / unused space.
When I travel I would generally take a small travel drive that is clone of my white MacBook as a rescue drive.Now that I have the MBA I am wondering if I could just clone my 11.6 MBA to a 64 GB flash drive and then if the worst happened I could reverse clone from the flash drive to the MBA.

I performed a "repair disk", and after saying "invalid node structure" and "invalid record count", it says it cannot repair the disk. I don't know what step to take next. How do I see if time machine has backed my files up? Do I need to erase the HD and reinstall?

And also something to mention, Server Admin 10.5.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 DOES NOT WORK on Snow Leopard. The only way to manage my Server is to use Screen Sharing app <-- IT SUCK.
I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my mac. I'm using bootcamp assistant to try and partition my hard drive, but it gives me an error saying it cannot partition it because of unmovable files or something along those lines. Is there any way to get around it, and if I do use my OSX install disk and run disk utility to repair the drive will my files be deleted?

The mouse continues to work, but if I navigate to the desktop, folder won't open. Then, if I try to quit programs, the dock either becomes unresponsive or programs will only quit if "forced quit." Then the beachball of death appears. The beachball of death will continue for a very long time—perhasp indefinitely, so I decide to manually power down the computer.

So I restart from the system (command-R) and repair the disk. But now within a day or two I get the same error. Does my hard drive need to be replaced? Am I on borrowed time? My computer is under warranty. Do you think Apple will replace the hard drive?

need to run a terminal command on my computer at home but it doesn't have screen sharing or remote management enabled. I do however have file sharing enabled and able to browse the drive freely. I want to run a sudo command on that drive but don't know how to run it from where I am.

Other caveats? I can foresee all sorts of potential problems. Anybody have any experience with this?I know that I will lose my apps in the process.
If you're using SSD as boot drive what's your setup? Did you moved your user directory? Or maybe you just moved your Mail folders? Or perhaps you made no changes.
View 21 Replies View RelatedWhenever I restart Tiger, it closes all the directory windows. I thought it should preserve all the window states in Tiger when you restart.
If I resize the directory window in my internal drive, it does not preserve the new window size. But if I resize an external disk directory window, it preserves the new size.
I found out from Get Info that my internal drive is locked with read only permission only, but my external drive is unlocked with read+write permission.
How do I change the permission so the window states can be preserved on my home drive?

My MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.
Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).
I was trying to back up my MacBook to a WD 1TB external drive. It has already been used on my wife's iMac running OSX Tiger. It has had no problems. When I plugged it into my MacBook, it started freaking out immediately, and slowly creating folder after folder on my desktop. Eventually I had 46 folders that were all named the name of the hard drive. I tried to repair disk, and erase disk and partition the disk - but none of them would work. With partitioning, I get the error message: Partition failed with error: POSIX report directory does not exist.
