OS X :: Unable To See Anything On Screen / Display Or Graphics Card?
Oct 14, 2010
I have a friends macbook. It's circa 2004 according to her. The display look horrible. It looks equivalent to like 8bit windows YUCK. I'm not sure the problem, but it's hard to diagnose (I'm a noob anyway), when I can't see anything!!
Heres a pic
could someone point me in the right direction. I tried searching but it's hard to find anything because I don't know how one might describe this problem correctly.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro. I wanted to upgrade the video card, but had 2 questions.
1. Is the 4850 the best card to get right now? This card was announced a long time ago and nothing new seems to be coming out anytime soon. I don't want to buy this card and have a new card announced soon after.
2. The ATi has one display port and one DVI. Is there a card with 2 display ports?

I'm not a huge gamer, but sometimes my 120GT (in a 2.66 Quad Nehalem) just doesn't cut it.
I'm open to flashing a PC card, but I do need that damned mini displayport for the 24in LED monitor.
Do I have a lot of options?

last week i tried getting into imovie, and a message comes up. It says "imovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with quartz extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support quartz extreme." I have been on a couple forums where people have had the same problem, and there doesn't seem to be a solution. I would really appreciate some help.

I just got my macbook pro retina 2.6 with 16 gigs of ram. It was working great for the first 40 minutes then on the left side of the screen two inches went black, then the screen went fuzzy then cleared up. I reinstalled the OS just to be on the safe side and sure enough it happened again. Called support and they told me DOA, however they can't do anything because apple support systems are down! Check out the photos of my screen. It will clear up if I don't use it for a few minutes which makes me think it is the graphics card. Hope this isn't a displaygate for apple all this money and I get a DOA - whatever happened to QA?

I installed USB Overdrive (a program), I clicked on restart and my iMac never got up. When I start it, the HDD and fans do work. But there is no boot sound, and when I change sound levels, I cannot hear it. I think, it never makes it to OSX. It does not load the OS. I dont think it is Graphics card (HD2600) failure.
When I try to reset PRAM, nothing happens. Usually I must hear it restart again with loud boot sound but it never happens. Also my keyboard does not seem to work, as the CAPSLOCK button does not light up, when pressed. I changed RAM to different moduls, still the same. I checked the iMac RAM on a different computer, it works. Maybe USB Overdrive killed the USB slots? As my USB keyboard does not seem to work

My two previous older macs have been perfect to me, but this new MBP I5 model is giving so many issues lately. Every once in a while, my computer's graphics (I am assuming) goes crazy, and I get this pixelated distortion that's right in the middle of my screen that's about 2"x5" on my 17" screen. This happened just earlier, while I was using Safari. However, even after closing all of the Safari windows down, the distortion will still be there, and will stay there regardless of what I have or don't have open. Logging in and out will fixes the problem, and everything goes back to normal for the mean time. Any one ever experience similar problems or know what I could do to see what's going or fix it?

Do not want a nuisance to escalate into a serious problem thru benign neglect. Random black screen -- Turn monitor off then on, and all comes back fine. No loss of power in machine, no fan quirks, no overheating. Is it the Monitor? or the graphics card?

I've got a 2007 Macbook Pro. It's on its second graphics card (8600M GT), the first one failed on me a year ago. OS X 10.5.7, all firmware updates installed.
I think I have a new graphics card issue, but I can't prove it. In Front Row, after 10-20 minutes, often parts of the screen will start going black. Then it freezes. Sound works fine. It doesn't look like the same kind of wild distortion that I got when my GPU failed the first time, though, it just looks like things have been rendered incorrectly.
When Front Row finally quits, I've had black and white bars across my menu bar a couple of times. Once the computer then totally locked up and I had to reboot.
In Windows XP in boot camp, things are worse. I only use boot camp for games, since they use a lot of graphical power, it made sense that the problems happen there more often. After 15-20 minutes, the screen will start stuttering, then the keyboard/mouse will stop responding. The sound will hiccup a few times too. That lasts about 10 seconds, then everything returns to normal for a while (as little as 10 seconds, or as long as 5 minutes.)
The Apple Hardware Test (short and extended) shows no trouble. Techtool Pro shows no trouble. I ran the very thorough memtest86+, and it showed no memory trouble.
Can anybody give me any tips on definitively diagnosing this problem? Is there any kind of really intensive hardware test I can get (a live CD maybe)?
Second question, has anybody heard of Apple replacing a laptop that has had many faults with a brand new unit?

After packing away my little brothers sawtooth 400Mhz with 384mb RAM and an 8Mb ATI AGP graphics card and then unpacking it I've been having a problem. When starting the computer up the screen shows nothing at all I have tested to see if the screen is broken and it seems to be functional. I think the card itself might be broken? BTW, I'm using the VGA slot and not the DVI slot on the back. I have also removed and cleaned the card just incase that might've been the problem.

Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. Same thing happens, gray logo then kernel panic with jagged lines all across the shifted screen.

I replaced my macbook pro last week with a MacPro 8 core.
For the last few days the GT120 graphics card was connected to two 24" dell monitors (2407 and 2408).
The 2407 is my main display and was connected via the display port to a display port to DVI-D adaptor and then to the DVI-D port on the screen. The 2408 was connected using the DVI-D on the graphics card straight to the monitor. This setup was great as I couldn't even tell if my mac was on or off because I couldn't hear any off the fans.
The only problem was that when running full screen video (EyeTV/Quicktime), the picture would sometimes stutter. After looking at the apple store website, a new GT120 was 99 for students so I picked one up yesterday.
The original GT120 is in slot 1 and is connected to my 2407 (main display) via DVI-D, the second GT120 is in slot 2 and connect to my 2408 via DVI -D. Now the problem is noise! I can now hear my mac whirring away all night (MacPro in my bedroom).
Any idea what the problem could be? When i run iTunes visualizer, both displays average at about 63fps and there is no stuttering of the picture. One thing I have noticed (using hardware monitor) is that when play itunes visualizer on full screen the GT120 in slot one uses 22% and the GT120 in slot two uses 99%.

I have two issues with my present X1900: it's not going to be OpenGL compliant come September, and more pressingly on a day to day basis, for some reason Eve Online, the game I'm rather addicted to, doesn't like me using two video cards - a stock GeForce 7300 and the Radeon.
I haven't been able to troubleshoot my way to confirming why I have the issue (and I've posted on Eve online forums - no one else seems to have the issue) but I get really odd graphics glitches when I have more than 2 screens 'detected'. Rather, when I have screens on more than 1 video card. I think it has to do with an ATI/nVidia conflict while running a Mac port of the Linux Port of Eve.
So I was hoping to get the 8800 perhaps, but they're getting pretty hard to find. Any other suggestions? Performance-wise I've been happy with the X1900, don't really *need* to upgrade, but I'd like to maximize OpenGL and solve this confilct issue so I'm not constantly climbing in behind my desk to unplug and replug DVI cables - I now run 3x monitors and a projector.
Price counts for me, I'd like to keep this upgrade as cheap as possible - don't use 'Pro' apps. I'm not afraid to flash a PC card if there's decent instructions around somewhere. This is actually a PC X1900 with a custom fan/heatsink fitted (Xcellero X2 or something? It's been a while).

So basically, I bought a Mac Pro in mid 2007 with the following specs:
Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
1GB (2 x 512MB)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB SDRAM
Anyways, I have just started using it again and would like to use it to play WoW (probably via BootCamp) but the current graphics card is really insufficient.
So what I'm basically looking for is a graphics card that would run in a mid-07 Mac Pro with the 2x2.66GHZ Dual-Core Intel Xeon's (ram is not an issue, I can upgrade this as well) - that will allow me to play WoW on even good settings.

I posted this on the buyers guide forum but got no response. Maybe you guys can help.
I have a G5 dual 2.0 with 5.5 GB ram and an ATI Radeon 9600 pro graphics card.
I have been running Final Cut Studio with no problems. Once I upgraded to FCS 2, it seems to drag with some of the new fetures. Motion 3 seems really slow! So I added 2 more gigs of ram to bring it up to the 5.5.
I am waiting for the new MP like so many of you, but I will keep this computer for off line editing and compressor and for a part time assistant editor to use.
Would it be worth it for me to upgrade the graphics card?
If so what would be a good choice of card for this type of work.
FYI the last computer game I played was Zork, so I don't care about gaming.

Can you fit pretty much any graphics card into a mac pro? (Im new to mac so sorry if thats basic) Also say the card only worked with windows, if I plugged in a card and booted to windows would the card run that way? Reason I ask is that some of the work I do requires running high end games but I hate vista and have always wanted a mac. Im fine with dual booting if I have to but I was hoping that high end graphics cards would work on the mac pro so I dont have to buy two machines.

Now on my second 2008 MP 2.8 octo and this keeps happening to my screen. I assume its a problem with the standard ATI 2600 graphics card. Anybody experience the same problem, happens with many different apps. Have done all updates, all Apple said was reset the PRAMMy first MP died after a couple of weeks, logic board and both processors failed. Couldn't get replacements as Apple were still waiting for Intel to increase production so I ended up with a new MP.

I had recently purchased a 2nd hand G5 PowerMac with dual 1.8GHz processors and PCI-X slots. I think it was released in November 2003. It's a great machine, but suffers from its lacklustre 64MB graphics card. My Mac man told me not to bother, but I would like to investigate the option further. What do you think is available and where would I obtain one of these things? Oh, I should also ask the most important question...is it worth it?

What do you think is the most probable future BTO graphics option (eg. for the Nehalem generation) Mac Pro?
I would like to add one of the two new ATI cards (HD 4850 or 4870) in my mac pro to use in Windows.
I would like to replace the 2600XT completely and flash the new card for mac once there will be a version with an EFI-ROM (which probably will happen sooner or later, like the 3870 now) and therefore I want to get the card which is more likely to appear as mac version in about a year.

Rite now im trying to install my gtx 280 in my mac pro 1 but it will not fit in the first pcie slot. I know its pretty easy to get it in on the 2nd slot, but im just wondering if it will work? Or do all graphics cards have to be on the first slot? I read here that you can either put it in the first or second. So Im just making sure.
I already took the stock 7300 out of the 1st slot though.
