MacBook Pro :: Add More Memory To My System?
May 1, 2012
Can I add more memory to my system? I've heard going from 8 GB to 16 GB can make a difference. When I bought the system, 8 GB was the maximum memory configuration.

I just bought my first mac (2010 13 inch base model) and i was looking in Activity Monitor when i noticed that my free system memory is around 15-20mb. Is this normal? The only things i have running is chrome, itunes, and steam. Would these programs eat up memory? if this is a stupid question please forgive me!!!!

I purchased a 500GB time capsule awhile back in hopes of killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to:1) serve as my wifi base (which it is doing very nicely)and 2) Allow me to backup all my files on my macbook in order to free up some memory.I guess my question really is, once I've backed up all my content to the time machine (acting as an extra hard drive), is it safe to just delete the content from my macbook that I am ok with not accessing when away from my time capsule? For example, all that music I still want to keep but dont necessarily listen to on a regular basis? I am completely full on my macbook and need extra room. I dont anticipate filling the time capsule anytime soon.

So I have a Mac Pro, quad core xeon with 12 GB of RAM.
I have noticed that when I watch videos, usually from YouTube but elsewhere also, the video is very choppy and the overally computer performance becomes laggy. I thought it was Flash, so I deleted flash and switched my youtube preferences to HTML 5. No change.
So I bust out activity monitor, and it doesn't seem to be a CPU issue, but I note that the VM size is 200-400 GB. That seems excessive. I've about 80 GB available free space on my startup drive; I can move some stuff to another drive to create more free space if that's the issue. But is that much VM normal in 10.7? It seems like a lot.

I have an iMac 21.5 inch, mid 2010
Processor: 3.06 Ghz Intel core i3
Memory: 4 GB 13333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATi Radeon HD 4670 356 MB
Software: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
I had a window pop up that read, "Your system has run out of application memory" when I had sever al word documents open and Safari open & Gmail open.
I also do not know what deamons are, nor have I been able to use "time machine" to back up anything on my computer.
Here is what the Etresoft report told me:

My MacBook air keeps slowing down and giving me the error message "Your system has run out of application memory". I end up having to force quit all applications and reboot, which fixes the problem for 10 - 15 minutes and then it starts over again.
I am on the road for work and won't be able to get to an Apple store until next week, but this is creating a gigantic headache for me. I found a bunch of threads on this same topic for Snow Leapord, but nothing pertaining to Yosemite.

Looking at MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, which share memory with the main system. I notice on all 2GB machines the graphics has 256MB of SDRAM and the machines with 4GB the graphics has 512MB. Does this mean if I bought a base model mac mini, with 1GB memory and 128MB SDRAM, increased it to 4GB of memory, I would have 512MB of shared video SDRAM?

Does anyone know if there is a certain temperature that causes iMac's to shut down? I have been queuing up a number of movies in Handbrake and letting the iMac chomp away at them. For several months this was not an issue (this is a 2009 iMac 2.93 base model, no upgrades.) For the last week or two, I have come back to find the computer off a number of times.
Every time it has done it i was while Handbrake had the processor pegged at 100% for a long time. The 3 highest temps are usually the power supply, the Northbridge and the CPU and the highest I have seen them is right around 70C. Last night I did some messing around with that fan control program and got the fans to run higher while Handbrake was running.
I managed to keep all of the temps below 65C. I am going to leave it like this for a while and see if I have any more problems. I'm also going to try to cut back on the number I queue up at a time. I was setting up enough to keep it going for 12-14 hours. I don't actually think it was a time thing though as last night it shut down while my wife was using it and it was less than 2 hours after I started a batch.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? I see some people suggesting it could be caused by bad memory, but as mine only seems to happen with Handbrake at 100%, I'm thinking it's just heat.

After owning my Imac for about 12 months or more now I've noticed lately that it has become much much slower. I expected it to slow down just like all computers once you have used up a fair bit of memory space but I haven't used up much at all. I've tried to avoid using up too much space on my Mac by using an external storage drive but I'm wondering if that has the opposite effect? I've got the usual apps that help the Mac to run efficiently and I've followed various threads that show how to optimize the mac so I'm assuming there isn't all that much tweaking left to do... could be wrong though. A long time ago (i'm not sure what got into me) but I downloaded the apple developer software, I don't intend on using it but i don't what the correct names of the apps are and I don't want to uninstall the wrong stuff. I have tested the speed of my Mac with and without the external memory drive but didn't find much difference, but perhaps my tests weren't entirely accurate.

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

I was asked to performed a system update with a reboot which I proceeded to do. Once the reboot was complete I had lost my system time (which had been reset to December 31, 2000 and my background had been replaced with the original generic MAC background. I have been unable to find the source of this issue and I am unsure how to fix this. I was able to change my clock by adjusting the Date & Time Preferences and fix my background image as well, but I am concerned that this is a temporary fix. Has anyone else experienced this with a system update?

I'm new to mac and I've noticed that I can have 2 gigs of memory one day and the next I'm down to 24 or something!I've noticed that if I open a file in Itunes and then change the info that there are now 2 files in the finder, one with the old info and the new with the new metadata. Why does OS-X do that?!
Also, if I have 1 gig of memory left (out of 180 or so) why does it disappear to 0 if I open photoshop? I'm used to a PC running virtual memory and CPU but why does the Mac actually take away my available memory?I'm at my wits end here, it's been driving me up the wall for weeks!

I am considering upgrading from my ~2 year old MBP to a 2.13 MBA Rev. C and have a question re: RAM performance: how does your MBA w/SSD perform once you have maxed out the 2GB of internal RAM and started swapping to the SSD?
The reason why I ask is that my current MBP had 2GB of RAM which would max out under my regular daily use (typically open is Mail, Entourage, Skype, Adium, iTunes, Keynote, Activity Monitor, and Safari with 10+ tabs open... don't ask). As you might expect, everything grinded to a halt once the MBP blew through the physical RAM and it started swapping to the HDD. A few months ago I upgraded to 4GB of RAM and everything ran smoother.

I've noticed in the past that after a few days of use, the free memory on my 2009 MBP gets really low. I notice this because when I get bored I snoop around the activity monitor - I actually don't notice any type of sluggishness. I'm simply inquiring about this. What I've done in the past is simply just reboot my system. This seems to work, but I just restarted my system last night, left it overnight and now according to activity monitor my free memory is at 12 mb! During the screenshot, I have Firefox with two tabs opened, iChat and iTunes.
