OS X :: Adding Older Time Macine Backups To A New HDD

Feb 26, 2009

Got a new HD for my Mac backups to day and did a full back up. Previously, I used a different HD for backups and would like to know if I can add those older back ups on a different HD to the new HD that I'm currently using?

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.4) How To Get Older Backups Off Time Machine

Aug 19, 2014

I'm trying to get older backups off my Time Machine hard drive but when using the Migration Assistant I only have the option to transfer the "latest backup" to my new iMac. And when I try to drag and drop the iMovie library (which is the only set of files I really want) iMovie on my iMac states I cannot open the library for either permission reasons (the first time I tried it) or because the file does not exist.

Software :: Time Machine Interface Not Showing Older Backups?

Oct 6, 2010

Lately when I go to view backups using the Time Machine interface it lists all my backups going back to April 22, 2009, but anything older than late August 2010 is blacked out and can't be clicked.

When I look in my Time Capsule disk on the finder, all the older backups are there and I can view and copy all the files.

Also, in system preferences, Time Machine preferences lists my oldest backup as April 22, 2009 and there is plenty of disk space available on the Time Capsule.

Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it?

OS X Yosemite :: 10.10.1 - Can't Browse Some Older Backups Via Time Machine Interface

Dec 2, 2014

Problem started after updating to Yosemite.  I am running 10.10.1.  I can find all my backups, going back to 2010 in fact, when browsing my external FW800 hard drive directly in the Finder.  But if I click the menubar icon and choose "Enter Time Machine," I can see some recent backups for some folders, but I cannot access some older backups that I know are there on that same drive.  The window title bars in the TM interface are totally grayed out for those older backups.  But again, there are all on the same FW800 external HD, and I can search them just fine and extract the files just fine using the Finder.

Is the Time Machine interface totally broken in Yosemite?

Clearly there is nothing wrong with my external FW800 HD, otherwise I wouldn't be able to manually browse and extract files via the Finder.  And yes, it makes regular TM backups every day too.  It's only the "Enter Time Machine" UI that is partly broken.  I say "partly" because some backups (very recent) display, but I cannot access all the backups.  It's very strange.

OS X :: Time Machine Don't Delete Older Backups To Make Room For New Backup?

Dec 3, 2008

i have a macbook with an internal drive of which about 230gb if full and used.

I have a 250gb external which i have been using to back up with time machine, done it several times over a few months.

Now there is like 70gb left on the external, and when i try to back up, it says failed, not enough space on external.

But i thought when there is not enough space, it simply deletes and backs over older time machine backups.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unable To Access Older Backups / Dates

Feb 28, 2012

At first (all of a sudden out of the blue) I could not enter Time Machine mode for love or money despite clicking on the enter time machine action botton, however I could run a 'backup now' at any point and this appeared to go through as well as the hourly automated ones. Then switching Off then back On Time Machine suddenly allowed me to enter Time Machine; however I am only able to access the finder windows for any local 'white tick' backups which in my case were only for the last several snapshot backups for today... but if I try and access any dates after this right back until November 2011 last year, nothing happens at all and the date/backup markers are completely unaccessible. Incidently, all of these previous 'purple tick' date markers (time machine backups/snapshots on external firewire 800 drive) were accessible before, but know they can't be accessed even though they corecctly index the appropriate dates right back until November.

I'ts worth pointing out that I've had many glitces and random problems since using a Thunderbolt Display which is where the external hard-drive containing the time machine backup is hooked up to. A seperate recent issue is constantly losing sound on the Thunderbolt Display which requires a reboot to get it back temporarily, but this is a seperate issue but may be related if the cause of a number of problems may be originating from the TD.

The external disk drive containing the time machine backup image, appears to be online ok as I'm able to access the drive in a normal manner. Has some kind of special links nature or association relasionship between the Time Machine program and the external drive and backup disk image contained on it been disrupted or broken? If this is the case, can they be re-linked or re-associated?

Desktops :: Adding AirPort Card To Older IMac

Dec 23, 2009

My daughter has an older iMac (with Firewire, but probably about six years old, it runs 10.3.9) and is adding a new iMac to her home. The older one will be for her children's use, and she and her husband will use the new one. Now for the problem. The old iMac doesn't have an Airport card; one would have to be added in order for both iMacs to have internet access.

1. Where can they find an airport card for this iMac?
2. Where can I find instructions for adding this card to the iMac?

OS X :: Time Machine Backups Missing / Unable To Find Backups

Sep 30, 2008

My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).

Where did they go? Why did they go?

A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with the Time Machine. I bought a 500gb Time Capsule last July and it has been running perfectly until a few days agp. I noticed that all my backups were no where to be seen (when entering Time Machine on my MBP) and that it was doing a full backup.. The backup took the guts of 36 hours.

I've come home today to find that all backups are gone again and it is doing another full backup!!!Any ideas what is wrong here?

Intel Mac :: Time Machine Backups Taking Extremely Long Time Running Lion 10.7.4

Jul 2, 2012

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

OS X :: Using Time Capsule To Access Internet For Older System?

Jan 18, 2010

I am the Principal of a school and because of budget cuts - scary piece ahead - also the tech coordinator. I have a few older eMacs, some with airport cards and some without. My question/problem: I want to hook an eMac 10.4.11 directly into the Time Capsule to access the internet (the time capsule is acting as an extension of our wireless network). I have done this before successfully using an airport extreme, however, I am not successful to date in doing this with time capsule. It has been a while since I set up a computer this way. My question is am I missing a trick (using ethernet cord into LAN port), or is it not possible.

OS X :: Apple Time Capsule - Difference Between Older And New Versions

Jan 24, 2010

I basically know someone that is selling the 500GB Time Capsule which has Dual Band Wi-Fi etc, this is the link for it on the Apple refurb website
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/FB764B/A
All I want to know is, apart from the obvious 1 or 2TB of space available in the new versions is there any other differences? Both are 802.11n and are dual band. What I have noticed thought is that there are refinements which allow it to be backed up 75% faster than the previous generation and it says there is a 50% better performance over Wifi with 25% greater range?

How is this possible if they are both 802.11n? Also Is this true even when connecting via Ethernet? In terms of when I backup over Ethernet will it be 75% more faster? It'll be on my desk so I don't really care about the wireless capabilities. Lastly, will it work with my network, please click on this link as it explains my setup.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=853136
So just to reiterate, will I notice a difference in back up speeds when connected via Ethernet between the two versions. I'm getting it quite cheap, for about $50 Brand New sealed.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Can Use Time Machine Restore From Older OS

Jun 25, 2014

My iMac (2010) has been having tons of issues lately. More specifically, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks last week, it came back with S.M.A.R.T. errors after a scan, so it wouldn't allow me to update. So, in preparation for the HDD to crap out on me, I did frequent back-ups using Time Machine. Well, the day finally came and my iMac won't "turn on" anymore. When I turn it on, it sits at the Mac loading screen for several minutes and then just goes to a blank white screen.

If I buy a new iMac or a new macbook or whatever, will it be possible to use my Time Machine back-ups to restore everything on it or will it not allow me to because the operating systems are different? As mentioned, I attempted to make a restore on my friend's macbook that I purchased as a spare but when I tried, it came back saying "Different operating systems, cannot restore" or something to that degree. Is there a way around this? Do I have to somehow downgrade the OS on my new machine?   I use iTunes for all my movies/music & Adobe Creative cloud so I can easily restore those on any machine but my desktop personal data, photos, etc are on the Time Machine restore.

OS X :: Older Mac Doesn't Recognize Newer Time Machine Backup

Jul 8, 2010

I got a new MBP (running Snow Leopard). I used Migration Assistant to migrate the data and setting from my old MBP (running Leopard) from my Time Capsule backup onto the new MBP. All went smoothly, and I used the new computer for a day to check all was well. This included testing Time Machine on the existing Time Capsule - all the old backups were there and it worked perfectly. the new computer also successfully added to these backups. So I wanted to refresh the old mac, so I booted from the old Leopard install disk, wiped the drive with Disk Utility, and did a clean install of Leopard. All was fine. Now I connected to the Time Capsule and attempted to use Migration Assistant to put a my stuff back onto the old computer. It wouldn't do this (couldn't see any backups). Does Migration Assistant only allow transfers from old systems onto new, not the other way round? This is a major bummer, if so. How can I get my stuff from my new computer back onto my old? Do I have to upgrade the old one to Snow Leopard in order to do this?

MacBook :: Freeing Up Memory On An Older System With Time Capsule?

Aug 17, 2010

I purchased a 500GB time capsule awhile back in hopes of killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to:1) serve as my wifi base (which it is doing very nicely)and 2) Allow me to backup all my files on my macbook in order to free up some memory.I guess my question really is, once I've backed up all my content to the time machine (acting as an extra hard drive), is it safe to just delete the content from my macbook that I am ok with not accessing when away from my time capsule? For example, all that music I still want to keep but dont necessarily listen to on a regular basis? I am completely full on my macbook and need extra room. I dont anticipate filling the time capsule anytime soon.

OS X :: How To Delete Time Machine Backups

Oct 31, 2007

I'm lost in trying to delete the backup directories created by Time Machine. I've moved disks around on my network and TIme Machine doesn't seem to remember that it's backed up a given system to a given disk previously, after moving the disk to a different server. So I'm content to start over and I went to /Volumes/Backupdisk/Backups.backupdb and tried 'sudo rm -rf *' to get rid of the existing backups in preparation to start over. It wouldn't let me remove them getting the error 'Operation not permitted'. I note that 'ls -l' shows a lot of rwxr-xr-x@ with the @ sign at the end and I'm assuming that this is a hard link, but I don't know. I'm also thinking this is why rm won't work - multiple hard links?

I really don't want to re-format the disk. BTW I am currently trying to use Time Machine to delete all the file but that is taking FOR EVER and I'm not sure its actually doing anything. Its been about 30 minutes and there's been not reported increase in disk space. Its like its still preparing to delete.

OS X :: Time Machine Not Doing Incremental Backups?

Jan 16, 2010

I started using Time Machine on Jan. 9th with an initial backup onto my LaCie Firewire drive (MBP 17inch SSD with three partitions). That backup was about 55GB. I am using the 'regular' settings on Time Machine - the LaCie Drive is the only item on the exclusion list (I guess Time Machine put it there itself). Since then TM does its thing every hour. When I enter TM I see all those backups. However, there's a big difference between the 'NOW' and all the backups, even the one just an hour ago. E.g., the download folder has now 47 items, whereas the backups all show 35 (the number of the initial backup). The Entourage database has also grown, but any backup shows the size of the initial backup.

I verified this by restoring a database and opening it in Entourage and sure enough the last message shows a date of Jan. 9th. TimeTracker shows many backups since the initial backup with 0 bytes or some smallish number of KB - only a few are in the MB range (total is around 150MB since Jan. 9th). Bottom line, TM does not really backup incrementally. Has anybody experienced this malfunction? What would be the solution to this problem? Any tweaks, settings to change? I'm using a Firewire 800>400 cable (9-pin to 6-pin, 24K gold-plated connectors) from SIIG - could this be the cause? But why would the initial backup work just fine plus all the others allegedly being performed?
