MacBook :: Fan Always On - Flash Video Stutters ?
Apr 3, 2012
We have a 13 inch white macbook (2010).A few weeks ago, the fan started running all the time at tremendous speeds. Here are the things I've tried:SMC reset. This did not help.PRAM reset. This seems to have helped a little. Whereas the fan was on high speed as soon as the computer booted before the PRAM reset, after I did this, it is seems to kick in only after a browser is opened.Update the latest version of 10.6.I've checked the Activity Monitor--nothing seems to be eating up a lot of resources. It's 80 to 90% idle when the fan is revved up.The bottom does not feel hot. I'm not sure how to check the temperature monitors on a mac. I also don't know the mac command to check the CPU temp. (I'm more of a linux guy usually).
I think this is related--the day we noticed the fan, Hulu videos--not high def, just the middle range, 360 option), started stuttering. This is not a buffering problem, because the buffer is full. But the videos drop a few frames a second, or so it seems. The audio is ok, I think.I've updated Flash, but that did not help either problem.

I have a Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro. I love it, it's great. I upgraded to a 500gb HD and 4GB of RAM.Since I purchased it, Flash videos (Vimeo, YouTube, etc..) are jerkey in both Safari (3.0 and 4.0) and in Firefox (3.0 and 3.5). I've tried updating my Flash player, and just nothing seems to work. The audio plays fine, but the video stutters almost every few seconds. My video settings are on "Best Performance".

I've owned my iMac for nearly 3 years now and it has never failed me, it's honestly the best computer I've ever owned, it simply works all the time. However flash seems to run quite laggy on it, especially in firefox. When watching HD videos on Vimeo it stutters quite a bit. I've made sure I'm running the newest version of flash. Does anyone else have this issue? I tried searching but not much came up.

Problem description: Computer freezes and stutters with video or audio (like a broken record) then shuts down. Doesn’t seem to affect anything, but still interrupts logic pro 9, youtube, etc.
I downloaded EtreCheck and this is what it came up with:

My kids made a video, edited it in iMovie and burned it to a CD. When we put the cd into our macbook pro and play it through QT Player the video pauses and stutters and the audio is not synced up to the lips, and that's if and when the audio does come on. The CD is fine as it does play as it should on the pc desktop that we have. What are we doing wrong?

I want to create a simple flash movie (I don't yet own or know how to use Adobe Flash). Pretty flowers in the background, inspirational music, passages from the Bible or something fading in an out... you know the schtick. Maybe convert it to a screen saver.

My PowerMac plays most small videos (640p) on YouTube just fine, as well it does an OK job at playing slightly larger videos in Quicktime. I would like to not have to worry about Flash any more. With the new 10.1 beta 2 I notice a nice boost in performance, almost tolerable. If I install a graphics card that supports Core Video will it free up the CPU? How can I tell if a card supports Core Video? As well, what cards do you recommend? Is it difficult to flash a graphics card to work with OS X Tiger in a PowerMac G4?

Whenever I run a flash video, according to my istats program, the CPU temp is between 65c to 67c. Is this normal? I never noticed this high temp on my previous 2.4 umbp. There are other sites that have flash video that makes it go up to 80-85c.

I noticed my trackpad started acting funky last night. It won't happen right away when I turn my MBP on, but usually after some time (depends). First thing that happens: it responds slowly; it will move the pointer less than it would normally and it will judder along. Pressing harder doesn't help and sometimes two-finger scrolling won't work one way, or sometimes using my other finger will work better. After some more time, it will stop responding entirely or get unusably slow. I noticed restarting fixes it (temporarily; once again, it depends). Just before posting this, it happened until it didn't want to work at all, and I let it sit for a few minutes, came back, and it worked fine. Ten or so minutes later, its still working (no restart). It's troubling and I'll probably take it to an Apple Store to have it checked out, but I won't have time to do that for some time, so I'd like to see if this is possibly something well-known or fixable.
I thought it might be dirty, but I cleaned it, well, a few times, and still nothing. My hands are clean, too. I thought it might be something I "spilled" onto my keyboard a few days earlier; it wasn't anything watery, it was a rather thick consistency. I hope that isn't it, as I cleaned it quick and well, and it wasn't on the trackpad, and the keyboard works perfectly. The only thing I was doing when it first happened was video chatting via MSN (MSN gets my Mac hot, and I was worried it was the heat that did something, but IDK for sure). I only started using MSN about a week ago, and it gets my Mac really heated each time I use it. I did some searching on Google about this, but nothing quite like my situation. I haven't looked at everything, but, nothing yet.

Just noticed that when I'm lying on the bed with my MBA on my legs, watching so [URL]videos....it starts skipping in about 10-15 minutes.
I don't see core shutdowns.....but actually the video/audio is going to desync and starts skipping....is this normal? Do I have to get a MB/MBP just to watch Hulu and flash videos?
I think this may be related to the temperature, but usually it's not that hot.

I used my 13.3/1.86/4GB MBA to watch football today and was pretty surprised with the poor battery results. Would this seem normal?
Took off charger at 11:45AM CST, battery 100%Apps open - Mail, Chrome, Parallels with Win XP running, no XP apps open11:45-12:00pm - Simple browsing, no flash running (I use FlashBlock)12:00pm - I start up one window for NFL Sunday Ticket Online, Flash fullscreen video and one window for my Yahoo Fantasy Sports which also uses Flash. For the bulk of the time the NFL game is on fullscreen video with my Fantasy app running in the background1:15pm - I notice my battery is down to 48% with approx 1 hr 10 min remaining. I check my screen brightness and it is at 100% (not sure why), I reduce brightness to 50%1:15 - I use the computer same as at 12:00pm but now at 50% brightness
2:20 - My computer goes into hibernation (there was a low battery warning about 5-10 mins earlier.
So I essentially got 2 1/2 hours of usage with the bulk being heavy usage with flash. For the bulk of the time the computer was using 50-60% of the processor and the exhaust was about 3400rpm (the fan was audible but not loud). Does this usage time seem normal for what I did? I would have expected at least to get 4-5 hours with a 13.3 using flash. Also I was surprised that the battery life didn't improve at all after dropping screen brightness from 100% to 50%.

My job requires that I view flash videos that are 3 hours in duration. In the past I used a PC, but we are now authorized to use Macs. Is it safe to do this on my new 15" MBP Core i7? I've only tried it just _once, with my new MBP.It got pretty warm on the bottom, I could hold it in the palm of my hand, so it was not so hot that it would burn, but it was very warm. It was sitting on my desk and not my lap.

I noticed that all the flash videos played inside Safari on my MBP were slow and choppy when switching to full screen mode. This started happening after upgrading to Flash 10.1 r85. I disabled hardware acceleration on Flash's settings, and video playback went back to normal.
What can I do to use hardware accelerated Flash, but without the slowdowns?

Ive recon that when having your MBP's GT330M turned on, you can't play YouTube-videos in full-screen, my screen just turns white, and nothing happens.. Then you have to ESC yourself outta there..
The funny thing is that if you use the Intel HD Graphics processor, it works fine, but it gets very laggy if you have 720p res..
Is there anyone else having this problem?

Here's my problem: I'd very much like to download an embedded flash video from this page: http://bit.ly/d24fEU. (One has to click 'start' for the flash to load.)
But web developers have become wily it seems. No longer do the old methods appear to work. I've tried: Apps for downloading youtube videos, using the Activity window in Safari (only a small SWF file of about 21kb appears in the activity window), numerous Firefox plugins To no avail.
There are apparently apps for Windows that can manage to download these tricky types of videos, is there anything or any method on the Mac? I've been ripping my hair out trying. I've searched the forum, but none of the suggested methods work.

Something strange is going on with my new current generation Mac Mini.
Since this morning I use a second display (Samsung P2450H) along my SyncMaster 226BW and whenever I watch something in QuickTime (or VLC for that matter) and I turn off one of the displays, the video starts to stutter occasionally. This happens both with HD and non-HD content.
Have no clue as to how this could happen, especially since System Profiler shows the displays to be powered on even when they actually are not

I've been reading, researching, etc like crazy on flashing PC video cards for mac. Cindori's Post: The Golden Guide to Flashing Graphic Cards [URL]. This guide is GOLDEN!! And Rew's post: Step by Step: How to flash a PC 4870 1 Gig Video Card for your 2006 Mac Pro (1,1) [URL]. Have been really helpful. Only my ATI Radeon HD 2600XT stock card in my 2008 mac pro, totally fried/died out. So I have zero video card (I'm using a PC laptop now). And the tutorials on how to flash a PC cards requires plugging in both the old card (using it while dumping the ROM) and new card. I was looking into buy a Sapphire 4870 1G and I don't want to pay the $300 and plus already used flashed cards on eBay. The 4870 are cheaper compared to the 5870 at $400 plus. I was wondering if anybody got to flashing the 4870 using just the one video card on a mac pro 2008 (3.1)? I need a good video card to do 3D modeling in Maya and Mudbox. But don't want to pay double the price, or lesser choice for 'apple' approved hardware?

I'm desperately trying to get my 3 year old macbook to cooperate - it operates fine although it has been very slow lately but occasionally it will freeze and flash a blue screen, then either just remain frozen or shut down. When I try to turn it back on, it responds as normal, but as the desktop, wireless bars, etc start to load, the pinwheel comes up and then the screen flashes blue, and the whole process of loading the desktop starts over. This repeats endlessly until after turning on and off a few times and waiting about ten minutes it will finally turn back on- something is clearly up and I'm afraid I am going to lose data.

Today I just bought and installed an (Apple) ATI 4870 for my '06 Mac Pro. It's all gone pretty smoothly, however I have noticed that flash video playback from sites such as Youtube and Vimeo are jerky. Have I missed something about installing a 4870 into an older MP? I thought it was basically plug and play - even though it's not officially supported by Apple. Quicktime movies are nice and smooth. This is under Snow Leopard, so I'm not sure if the problem exists under Leopard but I could probably move my last bootable backup drive into an enclosure with firewire and check things out.
