OS X :: Quicktime Stutters With Second Display Turned Off
Mar 31, 2010
Something strange is going on with my new current generation Mac Mini.
Since this morning I use a second display (Samsung P2450H) along my SyncMaster 226BW and whenever I watch something in QuickTime (or VLC for that matter) and I turn off one of the displays, the video starts to stutter occasionally. This happens both with HD and non-HD content.
Have no clue as to how this could happen, especially since System Profiler shows the displays to be powered on even when they actually are not

I'm desperately trying to get my 3 year old macbook to cooperate - it operates fine although it has been very slow lately but occasionally it will freeze and flash a blue screen, then either just remain frozen or shut down. When I try to turn it back on, it responds as normal, but as the desktop, wireless bars, etc start to load, the pinwheel comes up and then the screen flashes blue, and the whole process of loading the desktop starts over. This repeats endlessly until after turning on and off a few times and waiting about ten minutes it will finally turn back on- something is clearly up and I'm afraid I am going to lose data.

I am working with some NTSC DV .mov files (720x480). When I view them in OS X Lion (Quicktime 10.1), the Quicktime Movie Inspector shows the video correctly at 4:3 Aspect Ratio with the correct dimensions of 640x480 (using square pixels). However, when I open the same video in Windows 7 using Quicktime 7.7.2, It shows the video as 720x480 (I guess it is interpreting the pixels as square instead of 0.9091). Also, on the pc, there are black bars on the left and right margins. These don't appear on the mac. Why these are being interpreted differently by Quicktime on OS X and Windows?

I've owned my iMac for nearly 3 years now and it has never failed me, it's honestly the best computer I've ever owned, it simply works all the time. However flash seems to run quite laggy on it, especially in firefox. When watching HD videos on Vimeo it stutters quite a bit. I've made sure I'm running the newest version of flash. Does anyone else have this issue? I tried searching but not much came up.

We have a 13 inch white macbook (2010).A few weeks ago, the fan started running all the time at tremendous speeds. Here are the things I've tried:SMC reset. This did not help.PRAM reset. This seems to have helped a little. Whereas the fan was on high speed as soon as the computer booted before the PRAM reset, after I did this, it is seems to kick in only after a browser is opened.Update the latest version of 10.6.I've checked the Activity Monitor--nothing seems to be eating up a lot of resources. It's 80 to 90% idle when the fan is revved up.The bottom does not feel hot. I'm not sure how to check the temperature monitors on a mac. I also don't know the mac command to check the CPU temp. (I'm more of a linux guy usually).Â
I think this is related--the day we noticed the fan, Hulu videos--not high def, just the middle range, 360 option), started stuttering. This is not a buffering problem, because the buffer is full. But the videos drop a few frames a second, or so it seems. The audio is ok, I think.I've updated Flash, but that did not help either problem.

I have a Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro. I love it, it's great. I upgraded to a 500gb HD and 4GB of RAM.Since I purchased it, Flash videos (Vimeo, YouTube, etc..) are jerkey in both Safari (3.0 and 4.0) and in Firefox (3.0 and 3.5). I've tried updating my Flash player, and just nothing seems to work. The audio plays fine, but the video stutters almost every few seconds. My video settings are on "Best Performance".

Is there any way in Leopard to associate QuickTime display attributes with given videos?
For example, I might want one video to always show in Full Screen mode, and another video to be shown in Double Size, and yet another to be shown in Actual Size, and I'm looking for a way to store these values so that QuickTime always opens each of the videos with these given, per-video attributes.
Is this possible at all?

I noticed that after upgrading to Lion quicktime player won't play movies full screen on my second display. Under Snow Leopard if the quicktime window was on the second display and you hit full screen it would fill the display is was on. Now the video slides to the main display and then goes full screen. There doesn't seem to be any way to change that behavior. There are no preferences. Â
The only work around is to move the menu bar in the display preferences to the second menu, so that the second monitor becomes the main one.Â

I have a MacBook Pro and a bluetooth mouse and it is horrible when I have downloads going over wifi. The mouse stutters and lags horribly when there is a download going on. I'm thinking of getting a different mouse, like a Logitech with that small little "Unifying receiver" that plugs in to USB. I'm wondering if this will perform differently than a bluetooth mouse that communicates to the MacBook Pro built-in transceiver.

I noticed my trackpad started acting funky last night. It won't happen right away when I turn my MBP on, but usually after some time (depends). First thing that happens: it responds slowly; it will move the pointer less than it would normally and it will judder along. Pressing harder doesn't help and sometimes two-finger scrolling won't work one way, or sometimes using my other finger will work better. After some more time, it will stop responding entirely or get unusably slow. I noticed restarting fixes it (temporarily; once again, it depends). Just before posting this, it happened until it didn't want to work at all, and I let it sit for a few minutes, came back, and it worked fine. Ten or so minutes later, its still working (no restart). It's troubling and I'll probably take it to an Apple Store to have it checked out, but I won't have time to do that for some time, so I'd like to see if this is possibly something well-known or fixable.
I thought it might be dirty, but I cleaned it, well, a few times, and still nothing. My hands are clean, too. I thought it might be something I "spilled" onto my keyboard a few days earlier; it wasn't anything watery, it was a rather thick consistency. I hope that isn't it, as I cleaned it quick and well, and it wasn't on the trackpad, and the keyboard works perfectly. The only thing I was doing when it first happened was video chatting via MSN (MSN gets my Mac hot, and I was worried it was the heat that did something, but IDK for sure). I only started using MSN about a week ago, and it gets my Mac really heated each time I use it. I did some searching on Google about this, but nothing quite like my situation. I haven't looked at everything, but, nothing yet.

My kids made a video, edited it in iMovie and burned it to a CD. When we put the cd into our macbook pro and play it through QT Player the video pauses and stutters and the audio is not synced up to the lips, and that's if and when the audio does come on. The CD is fine as it does play as it should on the pc desktop that we have. What are we doing wrong?

I have several HD videos from my Sony NEX-3 camera that will not play very well from within iMovie. They freeze up, or run in slow motion while the sound track continues without any problem. I've seen other related comments on this forum, but no one has suggested a fix yet. I can play my clips just fine from the finder menu using "Quick Look". Other videos from the same camera work, what has changed?

I have had this problem quite a while now:When I open an .avi file it automatically opens using QuickTime. I'd like that because it's the best player for Apple. The problem is however that I can only hear the sound, there's no image/video.I use 10.7.2. (now updating to 10.7.3), but it already did this before I had OSX Lion installed. If I search for new updates it doesn't come up with an update for QuickTime.Any other player works (although VLC's the only one I tried so far).

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on my MBP.
I cant stream quicktime videos in safari. Every time I go to a video for example on apple.com and try to watch an iPod or Mac advert it will just tells me quicktime is required, free download. I've tried downloading quicktime 7 again but then it says that it cannot be installed because quicktime X is already installed, go to software update to install older version. Software update has no updates for me. I'm stuck, has anyone else had this problem?
I do have Quicktime X installed but it still wont let me view the videos.
I did a quick search but couldn't find any info on this.
