MacBook :: Startup Disc Almost Full - Delete Files?

Jul 4, 2012

I have an old MacBook, model 1, 1. It is running OSX 10.5.8. I am getting messages telling me my start up disc is almost full and I have to delete files. I am not sure what this means, or what I can do to avoid deleting files. Is deleting old mesages in Mail be enough? Do I have to delete applications? Maybe I need to bite the bullet and buy a new computer?

MacBook Pro :: Getting The Message 'Startup Disc Is Full'?

Apr 2, 2012

2 days back I started getting this message "startup disc is full" I have aperture for my photos and deleted all the duplicates which should have freed up a lot of space. After deleting files when I go back and check it is still full.I have deleted files from Aperture trash and the trash on the toolbar also.Is this a virus? I personally dont think I have enough files to fill up 500GB, probably around 200 GB.

OS X :: Full Startup Disc - Unable To Restart My System

May 21, 2010

I am new to the forum and so far have learnt a few things about my Mac. I have a problem tho. For the last few days, my MacBook had been giving me warning about the startup disc being full. Since then, I have taken steps to free up some space by deleting files and creating archives.owever, today, when I switched on my Mac today, nothing came on except a picture of a folder and a "?" on it. My question is, what can I do to start/restart my Mac and is there anything else I can do to free up my Startup disc.

MacBook Pro :: Start Up Disc Full - Different From Full Hard Drive?

Jun 5, 2012

I have a mac book pro...one of the older models...around 5 or 6 years old..the silver one with the silver around the screen part. Running Mac OS X 10.6.8,

2.33 GHz, 2GB ram.

Lately my computer has been rediculously slow with everything, but aside from that my issue is with my start up disc. I would have over 1.5 GB of space left, open up a photoshop file...make some alterations and save...and all of a sudden I have NO SPACE left. These alterations created the photoshop file to be like 50mb more. Its a 200mb file. So how can I go from 1.5 gigs to saving a 200mb .psd file and all of a sudden 0 hd space?

Sometimes I couldnt even save the .psd because when I opened it all of a sudden I have half a gig now. And even if I had half a gig why wouldnt I be able to save? I go to save and sometimes it says "your start up disc us full" - Is this different than my harddrive?

Is photoshop using some sort of weird caching thing?

Software :: Using Full Mailbox - How To Delete Files

Jul 21, 2009

During the last week or so I have received several emails form Microsoft exchange telling me that my mail box is almost full and to delete any unnecessary emails and empty my Deleted Items folder. I had about 14 pages of past emails and so I worked my way through them, deleted ones I did not need and then emptied my deleted file....thinking that this would solve my problem. I have since received more reminders, and interestingly the bar showing how much space I have left is unchanged! (491) even after dumping more emails! I now am down to about 9 pages in total and still I am receiving these messages. Should I be deleting files from somewhere else too?

Software :: Temporary Files Re-appeared After Deleting - Startup Disk Full

Dec 23, 2007

I keep getting the "Startup Disk is almost full" error message even though I know I had plenty of available memory. After searching the forums here, I downloaded Cocktail and cleared the caches, logs, and temporary files. I made hidden files visible, and I found in /private/var/tmp tons of files have been written taking up every bit of available space, even after running Cocktail's chron. A sample filename is 476deede776c8. I deleted these files, rebooted my computer, and I had the space back. BUT, this morning, when I started up, the memory disappeared again and these type of files were again gobbling up my disk space.

I booted from the system install disk to run disk utility. It says my hard disk is fine, but I can't repair permissions. Something about no packets or invalid packets.

I just went through the motions again with Cocktail and deleted the over 5Gb of temporary files, and so far, so good, but what can I do to stop this from continuing to happen?

These problems started after trying to download some printer drivers from HP's website, which was so slow I halted the downloads and cancelled them. I tried installing the one driver that downloaded, and onto a different user than the root system, as per HP's recommendation. This meant I had to use the system install disk to reset my passwords because my password wasn't working. I don't know if any of these actions caused the problem, are part of the problem, or are a separate problem. I can't afford to spend an hour a day, 2 or 3 times a day, erasing these pesky files so I can use my boot drive. Any advice, specific directions, and/or explanations are desperately needed.

I am running Mac OS 10.3.9 on a PowerMac G4 450Mhz, 800Mb RAM. I was using Firefox when the problems started.

Intel Mac :: How To Delete Internet Streaming Files That Are Causing Hard Drive To Be Full

May 5, 2012

Here is the back ground information of this situation.  I have a IMAC 21 inch 500GB Hard drive 4 GB RAM, which is up to date with OS X Ver 10.7.3.  So my wife loves to stream her favorite USA TV shows via the Internet, considering we are stationed overseas.  She pulled me away from the NBA playoffs because she kept getting this error of start up disk full delete files (or something to that effect.)  So last week, I deleted about 40GB of old shows that we downloaded and various other files and pictures.  Not even four days later the Hard drive is full again, and I think it is from my wife's streaming habit.  I went to "About This IMAC", to find out where the memory was being used from and its 377 GB used in a "OTHER", and the rest being utilized from APPS, MUSIC, PICTURES, etc.  So next I cleared the history and deleted the cache files and reset safari on both our log in profiles, then logged out and restarted the computer, which did not minimize the Hard drive memory being occupied. Where are those streaming files getting saved specifically, for maybe a manual delete?

Windows On Mac :: Full Install Leopard / SL Disc To Run Bootcamp / Update Disc?

Oct 13, 2009

Please take pity on a confused newbie. I'm running 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" Macbook with 1GB ram. My school requires me to run Bootcamp to take my exams. They told us that we need 10.5 minimum OS and must have our 'original system discs'. The installation dics that I have are for Tiger. If I buy an upgrade disc to Leopard/SL, will that contain the windows drivers I need to install after I install bootcamp? Or do I need to buy a full installation disc of Snow Leopard (since I think you can't buy the Leopard full installation anymore)? Another issue someone mentioned is that both Leopard & SL require 1BG ram minimum, which is what I have. I'm worried the os will run very slow, but I don't really have the money to buy new ram and get it install (and don't want to crack the fragile top case) now that I have to buy the new software too.
