Aug 16, 2010

i currently have a dell xps m1330 and would like to upgrade to a black macbook (used from ebay) because my computer has been up and down and i won't be able to handle the inconsitency in high school when i am gonna need a computer probly every day.

so i need to know, can the macbook be upgraded for 8gb of ram? you would probobly think, why would i need that much ram, but its so i can run windows and os x, with them both having 4gb of ram to run.also, would i be able to install windows (through vmware fusion w/ student discount $40) with the reinstall disk for windows vista on the mac?and is that disk and OEM disk?i also have an xp home premium sp3 disk from a dell mini my dad bought.

MacBook :: Black Screen - Programs Won't Work After Reinstall?

Apr 9, 2010

My ibook screen has been spontaneously and arbitrarily going black. I reinstalled the operating system and now Safari crashes every time I try to open it. Several other programs will not open including adobe and iTunes now says "You cannot use the application iTunes with this version of Mac OS" I also noticed that about this mac now says I'm running 10.4.2. when I had 10.4.11. I was prompted to install some updates a few hours after the reinstall. The screen is still randomly going black after the reinstall.

MacBook Pro :: How To Format Disk And Reinstall OS X 10.9.2

Jun 4, 2014

I bought my MBP in 2012 and after more than two years of service, I am starting to feel that it is slow and bloated. As such, I would like to completely wipe the computer and start fresh. Back in my Windows days, I would simply pop the Windows CD in the computer, format the drive and install windows again.

But my MBP did not come with a CD or DVD, so I am not sure how to proceed. I am now running Max OS 10.9.2, but the computer came with 10.7.x (I think, not sure).

How would I go about doing what I want to do?

MacBook :: Cloning A Hard Disk Versus A Complete Reinstall Of Leopard

May 29, 2009

I have a white macbook which I purchased in 2007 ( it is the version that only goes to 2MB of Ram total). In anycase I have a Hard Drive that i want switch into it. The question I have is there any benefit to just reinstalling a fresh copy of Leopard vs using a cloning software (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy)? Here is why I ask:

I cant remember ever defragging the current drive ( if that possibility even exists in Leopard.
I dont remember running any system tool like utility.
I have basically kept computer on ( or on sleep) for the time Ive used it. It is the best computer i have ever had. It is VERY low maintainance.

So with that said....does cloning copy over every characteristic ( an fragmented drive...slowness {of which none really exists}....or the time to launch the OS when it is rebooted)?

With all of this said, I dont use this computer for much storage. I have a couple of MP3s on there which can be ported off of there with a USB flash drive....and a couple of documents. Everything else is pretty much expendable.

I dont know...something tells me that its just better to freshly install the OS.

OS X :: Disk Stuck In Black MacBook

May 10, 2010

My mother got a DL DVD-RW stuck in the drive of her MacBook. When I try to eject it, it makes a bunch of noises like it is going to eject but then doesn't, and then I hear it spin and try and load, then it repeats by trying to eject it again, etc. If I reboot the computer, it shows the disk on the desktop and I can open it fine. Problems don't start till I try and eject it.

I have tried holding down the trackpad button on boot up, I tried "drutil eject" in the terminal, I tried using disk utility but while the drive shows up, it doesn't say if anything is in the drive. She has the Black MacBook 4, 1 with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo. 10.6.

MacBook :: Black MacBook Slow After StartUp Disk Got Full

Dec 26, 2010

I'm writing this thread on my dad's netbook bc my MacBook is so slow it took about 3 minutes opening Chrome, 2 minutes to get to MacRumors, forgot my password had to open Word, which I gave up on opening after about 5 minutes of spinning beach ball.

Booting takes about 10 minutes. Finder takes forever. Even moving the mouse over the dock to bring it up makes the computer freeze for at least 30 seconds, if not indefinitely.

The problem started two days ago. I was installing a new Windows XP program via Parallels, and somehow ran out of Startup Disk space. (I've been ripping my DVDs onto an external HD and sometimes I have up to 50+ gb before I get around to transferring to the external.)

When the "Startup Disk Almost Full" warning came up, I immediately erased 20 gb of space and emptied the trash. But everything was still stuck. So I closed out Parallels, rebooted (had to do a hard reboot), waited for the fifteen minute startup, and everything's been painfully slow since.

Activity Monitor says I'm using 1.82 gb RAM of a total 3.0, CPU is 79% idle, when I open Chrome, or anything really, I get the "Not Responding" beach ball, but no % of CPU working on the task, no increase in RAM, nada.

I have the black macbook, 2.16 GHz, 3 GB RAM, latest version of OSX

MacBook Pro :: Bootcamp Gone And Want To Reinstall Windows 7

Feb 8, 2012

I couple of months ago I installed Windows 7 onto my Macbook Pro. All went fine. I then bought MS Office Professional 2010 but before I bought Office a tried to download a trial version from Office website. I realized it would take 6 hours to install and so cancelled it. I then tried installing Office cd that I bought from Journeyed and it won't install.

I could see MS office when I go to all programs and thought I may have messed it all up when trying to download the trial version. Anyway now I have removed Windows 7 as I want to try installing it again to see if Office 2010 will install. Removing Windows 7 was fine but Bootcamp is no longer on my Mac. It has just vanished!

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: How To Reinstall Without The Disk

Feb 20, 2012

My macbook is about 5 years old. It needs resetting and, having been a student, I've moved about 5 or 6 times and have lost the disk. (Yes I've learned my lesson!) So how can I reinstall without it? I also need to upgrade my OS, probably to snow leopard, so I wondered whether I could erase everything and start from scratch whilst doing this?  If not, what options do I have? Do I need to buy the disk again? I have also got time machine backups, but they're from quite late, when the computer was already running slowly.

Windows On Mac :: Erased BootCamp Volume - Reinstall Windows?

Aug 30, 2010

So I thought I was a know it all and thought I could remove my Windows partition without reading the instructions. Typically one would do the following:
1. In Mac OS X, quit all open applications and log out any other users on your computer.
2. Open Boot Camp Assistant, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
3. Select "Restore the startup disk to a single volume" and then click Continue.

However, I messed it up. Instead of going through Bootcamp assistant, I went through Disk Utility and "erased" the Bootcamp volume. Now I am not sure where I at? I erased it, but you can still see the Bootcamp volume listed. And now when O try to use Bootcamp assistant to remove the partition I get the following:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS extended (journaled) volume or already partitioned by boot camp assistant for installing windows. I want to reinstall a Windows, but want to start fresh.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can Reinstall It Without Erasing Disk

Apr 27, 2012

I did the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I've been having random issues like it seems to go to sleep (all monitors go black) and when I close the lid; the light goes on (but doesn't blink like normal sleep).  Or during wake-up from sleep, after everything appears, it does the same thing.  The only thing I can do it hold down the power button, wait, and restart.  Today I'm on my 4 1/2 crash/reboot.  (.5 because during a reboot, it locked up again.) I was thinking that maybe a re-install might fix something, but I'm not sure. When I originally did the upgrade, I had a DisplayLink driver installed which Lion moved to the Unsupported folder; don't know if this is part of my problem or not.

I have both a back up of the main OS drive on a drive with Time Machine and a disk copy of the main drive (on another) as i had it before the boot disk crashed. My question is which is the best option to take when restoring the OS etc? As I have heard that there is a couple of bugs and issues when restoring via Time Machine. Is restoring via the disk copy a simple procedure? Or, should i reinstall everything completely from scratch and copy back the receipts and authorizations perhaps? Can you point me towards the best link/method to get my setup back on track? i'm using an apogee symphony pci card
