Feb 23, 2010

I have an old iMac, PowerPC running Tiger. I also have a MBP running tiger. I cant seem to find the discs for the iMac but i desperately need to reinstall the OS because its running like total garbage.I was wondering if i could use the restore discs from my MBP (Core 2 Duo) on that iMac?If not, where can i get discs to do a restore? or can i do it on the computer without a disc at all? I just need to start fresh.

OS X :: Using Same Disk For Re-installation On Multiple Computers In T.S. Settings?

Oct 27, 2010

I work in Tech Services at my University, and I've been presented with this issue multiple times at work. I think my entire group of co-workers have just been living with the precedent, a notion that I think is entirely false. Here's an example of the situation:

A student comes in with a non-working MacBook, vintage 2006, say. Something's wrong with the OS itself.. the student probably deleted /etc or something, not knowing what it was. Regardless, the computer is effectively borked and a reinstallation of Mac OS X is in order. My co-workers, and even my boss, tell me that I need to have _their_ disk to perform the reinstallation.

I think that's wrong. Mac OS X installation disks are now all the same. Newer ones might have newer drivers for newer machines, but outside of that, so long as a person has a license to that version of Mac OS X which was on their computer, they can use whatever media they like. If they own a Mac, they have a license already to the version it came installed with.

I don't believe there is any breach of license or copyright here by simply having our own archive of installation media for Macs, so long as we install the same version that corresponds with their computer's default setup.

I do realize that doing this will lose their iLife installation and any other third-party software that they had their computer configured with, but I can say personally that I'd be more glad to have a working computer and no Office than a non-working computer and Office.

Anyone have some thoughts? I'd like someone with more IP/legal knowledge to share their thoughts.

Hardware :: Computers Able To Mount Airport Disk?

Aug 4, 2009

After a quick search I realized that there may be people who do not know how to do this or haven't thought about doing this. I am about to purchase a new UB MBP and I would like to enable my existing Airport Extreme that is the first release (this means no dual band) to allow only N connections. I would like to supplement this by adding another wireless router I have laying around that is only B/G. To do this, should I just plug the B/G only router into a LAN port on my Airport Extreme and set up a new wireless network with another name such as "PhillStew N" for the Airport Extreme and "PhillStew B/G" for the other wireless router? Even more so, will nodes on my network that are plugged into the LAN ports on my B/G router be able to "see" nodes plugged into or wirelessly connected to the LAN ports/N connection on my Airport Extreme? Will computers connected to the B/G router be able to mount an Airport Disk that is attached to the Airport Extreme? For clarity, I have created a representation diagram of how I think this should be hooked up, which I am fairly certain is correct.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: How To Reinstall Without The Disk

Feb 20, 2012

My macbook is about 5 years old. It needs resetting and, having been a student, I've moved about 5 or 6 times and have lost the disk. (Yes I've learned my lesson!) So how can I reinstall without it? I also need to upgrade my OS, probably to snow leopard, so I wondered whether I could erase everything and start from scratch whilst doing this?  If not, what options do I have? Do I need to buy the disk again? I have also got time machine backups, but they're from quite late, when the computer was already running slowly.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can Reinstall It Without Erasing Disk

Apr 27, 2012

I did the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I've been having random issues like it seems to go to sleep (all monitors go black) and when I close the lid; the light goes on (but doesn't blink like normal sleep).  Or during wake-up from sleep, after everything appears, it does the same thing.  The only thing I can do it hold down the power button, wait, and restart.  Today I'm on my 4 1/2 crash/reboot.  (.5 because during a reboot, it locked up again.) I was thinking that maybe a re-install might fix something, but I'm not sure. When I originally did the upgrade, I had a DisplayLink driver installed which Lion moved to the Unsupported folder; don't know if this is part of my problem or not.

OS X Yosemite :: Disk Utility Won't Allow To Reinstall?

Dec 11, 2014

After then parade to Yosemite I ran into hard drive issues and my 2012 iMac will no longer boot but I ca boot to Internet Recovery.  My latest plan was to do an OS reinstall to an external drive then try to recover items w/ target drive.  In any case, when I choose reinstall OSX, it tells me I have to verify with Apple...OK...then continue....then it says select a drive to install OSX on but gives me no selection option?  Just a blank white line?  Both drives (internal and external) show up and can be accessed via disk utilities.

MacBook Pro :: How To Format Disk And Reinstall OS X 10.9.2

Jun 4, 2014

I bought my MBP in 2012 and after more than two years of service, I am starting to feel that it is slow and bloated. As such, I would like to completely wipe the computer and start fresh. Back in my Windows days, I would simply pop the Windows CD in the computer, format the drive and install windows again.

But my MBP did not come with a CD or DVD, so I am not sure how to proceed. I am now running Max OS 10.9.2, but the computer came with 10.7.x (I think, not sure).

How would I go about doing what I want to do?

OS X :: Won't Reinstall / After Main System Disk Crash

Sep 30, 2009

I want to restore and recover OSX & Logic 8 and the software i use with it (Apogee Maestro,UAD Quad & Waves plug-ins) to a new boot disk. I have both a back up of the main OS drive on a drive with Time Machine and a disk copy of the main drive (on another) as i had it before the boot disk crashed. My question is which is the best option to take when restoring the OS etc? As I have heard that there is a couple of bugs and issues when restoring via Time Machine. Is restoring via the disk copy a simple procedure? Or, should i reinstall everything completely from scratch and copy back the receipts and authorizations perhaps? Can you point me towards the best link/method to get my setup back on track? i'm using an apogee symphony pci card

Software :: Missing System Disk - Need To Reinstall

Oct 18, 2008

I have an Imac 5,1 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X version 10.4.11 and am fairly new to Mac. I made the cardinal sin of not leaving all of the pc world behind me when I made the switch to Mac and one day after examining my software, I noticed what appeared to be an excessive amount of folders containing only 1 or 2 photos apiece, scattered throughout the system. I got the bright idea to "tidy up " a bit so I created a folder where I could easily find it, and moved the single pix there and then deleted the original folders. My mistake was soon obvious, when the slideshows I had created in Iphoto would not work and some pictures were missing.

My problem is this: I bought the computer used and it came with nothing but the main unit , the mouse, and keyboard. I found a fix to the Iphoto problem, but it requires the original system disk which I do not have. I do however have a factory Mac OS X Tiger disc from an old powermac G3 I have. I was wondering if that disc would work to reinstall Iphoto? If so, are there any special instructions to get it to work? And lastly, if it doesn't work what are my next best options?

ICloud On Mac :: App Store Got Corrupted - How To Reinstall Without Disk

Dec 3, 2014

I am using OSX 10.6.8 in a MAC Pro desktop.  I want to use the Cloud to sync my desktop calendar with my iPhone 5 calendar.  When opening up preferences, iCloud is not among the "Internet & Wireless" options.  I went into my Applications folder, looking for the App Store application, thinking I could get the application and reinstall the Cloud option.  It was there, but a window came up saying: "You can't open the application App Store because it may be damaged or incomplete."   So, what would I need to do? I don't have the actual disk for this version to reinstall.  If I upgrade to OSX Yosemite, I'm afraid I'll have to upgrade all my main applications to be compatible.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Can't Reinstall System Because Disk Is Used By Time Machine

Mar 7, 2012

My MBPro is getting cranky in a number of ways that indicate a reinstall of Snow Leopard is in order. After the requisite disk first aid check I attempted to run the installer only to get a dialog box telling me that the system cannot be installed because this disk is used by time machine.  The MacBook disk is of course a source for back ups but not a back up drive.  Even after restarting and explicitly turning off Time machine I get the same results. What do I need to set to allow the installer to run. The installer cd is a stand alone snow leopard install cd, not a machine specific cd.

MacBook :: Cloning A Hard Disk Versus A Complete Reinstall Of Leopard

May 29, 2009

I have a white macbook which I purchased in 2007 ( it is the version that only goes to 2MB of Ram total). In anycase I have a Hard Drive that i want switch into it. The question I have is there any benefit to just reinstalling a fresh copy of Leopard vs using a cloning software (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy)? Here is why I ask:

I cant remember ever defragging the current drive ( if that possibility even exists in Leopard.
I dont remember running any system tool like utility.
I have basically kept computer on ( or on sleep) for the time Ive used it. It is the best computer i have ever had. It is VERY low maintainance.

So with that said....does cloning copy over every characteristic ( an fragmented drive...slowness {of which none really exists}....or the time to launch the OS when it is rebooted)?

With all of this said, I dont use this computer for much storage. I have a couple of MP3s on there which can be ported off of there with a USB flash drive....and a couple of documents. Everything else is pretty much expendable.

I dont know...something tells me that its just better to freshly install the OS.
