MacBook Pro :: How To Format Disk And Reinstall OS X 10.9.2
Jun 4, 2014
I bought my MBP in 2012 and after more than two years of service, I am starting to feel that it is slow and bloated. As such, I would like to completely wipe the computer and start fresh. Back in my Windows days, I would simply pop the Windows CD in the computer, format the drive and install windows again. Â
But my MBP did not come with a CD or DVD, so I am not sure how to proceed. I am now running Max OS 10.9.2, but the computer came with 10.7.x (I think, not sure). Â
I want to wipe a MacBook Air completely and install from scratch using the original restore disks.
Trouble is... yes, there is no optical drive. Can I just attach a USB DVD drive (from a PC, not a Mac), hold down C when booting, and proceed as with (say) a normal MacBook?
I'd like to format and reinstall operating system for my mbp 15 inch from internet (no startup CD required). What keys I should press when the mbp Startup?
Info: MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), Mac OS X (10.7.2)
So I got the black screen of death on my 2.2 santa rosa macbook pro and Apple changed the logic board for free because of a known Nvidia 8600 Gt problem. The thing is now leopard doesn't run as smooth as it did before the incident. I've repaired the disk permissions, and it got a little better, but still... it doesn't feel like it was. Is there anything else I could do? Do you recommend formatting and resintalling Leopard?
I just tried to use my MacBook pro but its showing a loading bar and it loads for like 5% and then shuts down.I read the instruction booklet and it says that I should tried to repair the disk or reinstall Lion but when I tried to repair it stops the process and when I try to reinstall its telling me that the disk is Locked...
my Leopard is running very slow and weird iTunes is all jittery and programs seem to like to spaz sometimes, so ive decided i'll reinstall leopard the thing is tho i have windows xp and dot wanna delete the partition and reinstall windows Xp its one of the most annoying things i do in life, lol anyways so can i install leopard then run the boot camp assistant and just find the boot camp partition click ok and be happy?
I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)
I have 43GB available on a 120GB drive on my MacBook base model and I'm trying to partition via BootCamp.I'm trying to allocate 32GB to the Windows partition but I keep getting the following error message:Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. Now I've backed up my disk and launched disk utility, and try to follow above directions here but the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) area is grayed out and when I click apply after highlighting the MacBook are (in blue), it errors out and says the disk is out of space.
My Macbook Pro hard drive failed. It is completely unrecoverable. I've purchased a replacement. How do I format the drive, install Lion and restore my system from my Time Machine backup? My Time Machine backup was created from a USB connection directly to my Macbook Pro. I have a Apple Lion USB Install Thumbdrive.
I am having an issue Partitioning my Internal HDD because some files cannot be moved it was able to Partition a while back when Installed Vista but I deleted that Partition as I needed a bigger one for Windows 7 Beta It says I need to "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume." does that mean I have to reformat my entire HDD? as I don't want to do that.
I have a problem with Disk Utility , when trying to format an external fire wire drive.
I cleaned out the drive and proceeded to erase it with zeros. After this Disk utility will not display the subdirectory or verify, repair, partition, erase the disk. The main disk name is still visible, but I cant access any functions. Error message says input output error.
DiskWarrior will not help, as the original directory is beyond recovery.
I suppose that I have damaged the original directory, and now I would ask the honourable forum if there is any remedy for my actions?
so i got this message "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." what do I do
My hard disk just got formatted and right now I am downloading the MAC OS LION back and if the connection were to disconnect will the download be resumed back from the point of disconnection or restarted from the start.
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7), still in warranty
I have an 8gb SecureLock Media memory stick and I cant write to it its currently formatted to FAT32 and was working perfectly fine before, it allows my to drag files of it but i cannot write to it, I can't reformat in disk utility.Â
I think i have lost my hard drive....when trying to run a disk utility or reinstall software, my hard drive is not listed. Does that mean it is gone? If so, is it expensive to replace?the notebook is about 5 years old".
I have an external hard drive that I'm planning to use for my iTunes Music library, however, I plan to access the hard drive from both my Mac and Windows PC.
Now I know I could format it as FAT32 (MS-Dos Format) in Disk Utility, however, from my understanding, this wont allow files larger than 4GB ... which could be a problem in future.
If I were to format it as the Mac Journal extended format, would I still be able to read and write to this from my Windows PC? Any ideas, or other work arounds for this?
I want to erase all my macbook files and OS and reinstall the startup disk. I have backed up old files on separate HD. Whats the best approach for a smooth reinstall.?
I have partitioned my external Hard drive into three different partitions, each of different formats. Two partitions for backing up my macbooks and one to copy to and from my windows PC. I would just like to know if in any way is it possible for me to be able to re-partition one of the partitions, without affecting my Time machine partitions, in case the need be in future.
I have a white macbook which I purchased in 2007 ( it is the version that only goes to 2MB of Ram total). In anycase I have a Hard Drive that i want switch into it. The question I have is there any benefit to just reinstalling a fresh copy of Leopard vs using a cloning software (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy)? Here is why I ask:
I cant remember ever defragging the current drive ( if that possibility even exists in Leopard. I dont remember running any system tool like utility. I have basically kept computer on ( or on sleep) for the time Ive used it. It is the best computer i have ever had. It is VERY low maintainance.
So with that said....does cloning copy over every characteristic ( an fragmented drive...slowness {of which none really exists}....or the time to launch the OS when it is rebooted)?
With all of this said, I dont use this computer for much storage. I have a couple of MP3s on there which can be ported off of there with a USB flash drive....and a couple of documents. Everything else is pretty much expendable.
I dont know...something tells me that its just better to freshly install the OS.
After backing up my data and then swiping my hard drive using Disk Utility, my OS seems to have been uninstalled as well. Is there a way to recover the deleted information and go back to the last working configuration? I'm on a MBP IC2D 2.16 w/ Lion.
I was restoring my MacBook pro to its factory setting by erasing the disk and reinstalling OS X lion via internet. But it is failing telling me that my network is very slow while I used the best network in my area. How should I get an OS X lion to my CP? Is it possible to get it from another MacBook pro? Or is it possible to recover the erased OS X Lion without or with external disc?

i currently have a dell xps m1330 and would like to upgrade to a black macbook (used from ebay) because my computer has been up and down and i won't be able to handle the inconsitency in high school when i am gonna need a computer probly every day.
so i need to know, can the macbook be upgraded for 8gb of ram? you would probobly think, why would i need that much ram, but its so i can run windows and os x, with them both having 4gb of ram to run.also, would i be able to install windows (through vmware fusion w/ student discount $40) with the reinstall disk for windows vista on the mac?and is that disk and OEM disk?i also have an xp home premium sp3 disk from a dell mini my dad bought.
My macbook is about 5 years old. It needs resetting and, having been a student, I've moved about 5 or 6 times and have lost the disk. (Yes I've learned my lesson!) So how can I reinstall without it? I also need to upgrade my OS, probably to snow leopard, so I wondered whether I could erase everything and start from scratch whilst doing this?  If not, what options do I have? Do I need to buy the disk again? I have also got time machine backups, but they're from quite late, when the computer was already running slowly.
I want to format my MBP 15" (non-unibody). I have all the Discs (leopard) that came with it. I also have the SL Upgrade Disk. I did not do this before so I do not know how to do it.
Somehow my permissions on my home folder are not right. Ever since SL i've had problems with these somehow. I try to change my entire home folder to: my user: read/write everyone: no access. and i apply to all enclosed items, with me as an owner, but still many folders have the permissions: system: read/write system: read/write everyone: no access how do i fix this? i can't go through all the folders manually and switch them all... how did this get screwed up? Why are there two 'system"? repair disk permissions comes up with nothing. Should i reinstall everything from scratch?
