Looking for some feedback here. Currently own an iPad and love it. MBA has always intrigued me. I can pull the trigger on a used (excellent condition) rev B MBA with 128 SSD for $850 or go the new 13" MBA route.
View 1 RepliesI have an iPad 32GB WiFi and a MacBook Pro as well so I was trying very hard to justify myself in getting an 11" MBA but ending up talking myself out of it. The 13" MBP is perfect for my uses. It's already lightweight and portable as it is. After playing with the 11" in the Apple store, I was impressed on how light it was. This no doubt blows away any netbook or any notebook in it's weight class in terms of size and performance. However, the MBP's battery life, hard drive space, and processing power OUTWEIGHS the reasons of dumping my 13" MBP for the Air. Also, I have it hooked up to a 21.5 Inch HP monitor at home and it's good enough to use as a main computer at home, and light enough to take on the road.
If I needed to lookup something quickly in bed or around the house, that's where the iPad comes in. If I needed to send a quick e-mail, my HTC Evo is already great at doing that. If I didn't have a 13" MBP or even the iPad, I would have most likely went ahead and purchased the MBA. Just now at this point, spending another $1000+ or getting rid of my MBP doesn't make much sense... yet.
I've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?

View 19 Replies View RelatedI knew I should wait to see what Rev C looked like before buying an MBA, but I am disappointed that we didn't get 4GB RAM or a larger SSD. So now I'm strongly considering a new 13" MBP with 256GB SSD (or maybe 500GB SATA if it isn't too sluggish) with 4GB RAM. I know it's a steal, but on the other hand the MBA price cut is pretty tempting. Is anyone else on the fence about which to get? The 13" MBP or MBA? I'm going to college in the fall so portability is a consideration, though either option would be an improvement over my 12" iBook in terms of weight and even thinness.
I have two major concerns with the MBA rev C.:
1) The battery. 3 hours (with the MBA) is probably good enough in most cases, as this is roughly what I get currently with my iBook. However, the MBP has a major advantage with its new battery tech.
2) Hard drive. I know I would not buy a MBA unless it had a SSD in it, but I really don't know if 128GB will be enough for me down the road. It is right now (my HDD space is mostly music and iPhoto libraries...no video editing for me) but I am thinking that videos from iTunes which I may or may not begin purchasing at some point will eat up space. I would be more comfortable purchasing 250+GB of HDD space in my next computer. I remember in 2004 buying my iBook thinking that 30GB would be plenty. Boy, was I wrong!...................
I just jumped on the Mac train and bought a Macbook Pro 13". There's a dead pixel on the screen. I'm taking it back to the retailer tomorrow. The retailer has a zero dead pixel guarantee on monitors so I'm going to hope that covers laptops too. I just wanted to know how many others have experienced dead pixels on purchasing a new Macbook Pro - i.e. what's the likelihood that the next one I get will have a dead pixel?

Does anyone know if you can upgrade say the hard disk of a base level macbook pro (13 inch i'm looking at) AT the apple store? I guess to illustrate my point - I'm looking at the baseline 13 inch macbook pro and I wanted to upgrade the hard drive from the 160 gb - maybe the 300 or 500 gb hard drive. Because I'm only stopping by for a day I wanted to buy one on the spot (thus getting it at an apple store rather than buying it online).

View 6 Replies View RelatedIf one buys a brand new sealed macbook pro from a private seller off craigslist/ebay/kijiji without a receipt can they register it with Apple? I know if one checks the serial number it will tell if there is warranty on the machine and an estimated purchase date. However, I was told by Apple that I would not be able to purchase and attach applecare to the machine because there was no prooof that the machine was infact purchased by someone - but that the machine does have one year warranty from the estimated purchase date.
Wondering if anyone has encountered such a situation where they bought a machine privately and then wanted to add applecare to it within the standard one year warranty period and was denied by Apple because there was no proof of purchase for the hardware. Or was the Apple rep just misinformed - if a machine is under one year warranty then one can purchase and apply applecare anytime within the one year.
Wondering if buy a machine and then 3 months down the road decide to buy applecare, has anybody been denied adding that applecare even though the machine is covered under the one year warranty. I called the credit card company 5 times and they said everything is fine. I retyped all the necessary information 3 times. Still the same result: credit card is not accepted. However, the $100 software is purchased but not the MacBook Pro nor the 3 year guarantee. This is extremely weird as to why one is purchased but not the others.

I just installed a new hard drive in my Macbook. I used the discs that came with the computer. I started the computer, went to the Disk Utility and created a partition named Macintosh HD. I made sure it was a GUID petition. When I restart to install the operating system I get a message "MAC OS x cannot be installed on this computer.

just got my laptop a little over a month ago. I have 2 dead pixels on the screen already. The first one, I noticed a few weeks ago and thought it was just a smudge and ignored it. But it hasn't gone away and I researched it a bit and discovered it was a dead pixel (It looks like a small line, thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top of the line). The 2nd one is at the very bottom of the screen and I just noticed it today. I have tried those pixel fixer applications, and they haven't done anything.
I bought my MBP at Best Buy and can't take it back since it's been past the 14 day policy if anything was wrong w/ the screen, to get it repaired or fixed. Plus, I didn't get AppleCare (I'll probably buy it when I graduate college this spring), so I only have the 1-year warranty. However, can if I take it to the Apple store what will they do? Will they fix the screen or just replace it? And since I don't have AppleCare, does anybody know how much it will cost (screen repair vs replacement)?

I am thinking of reformatting the drive and using the drive to test stuff out in. where I can purchase four of the hard drive screw/posts? I tried going to the Genius Bar, they referred me to Apple Care, who referred me to an authorized apple dealer... Who want to charge me an hour of labor.
