MacBook Air :: Using Internet Stick For Remote Travel?
May 17, 2012
I'll be traveling to remote tribal Ethiopia and would like to use the Cloud for frequent uploading of photos and journal, so that if my laptop or iPad gets stolen, most of my stuff will be safe on my desktop at home. I'm looking for any suggestions that might broadly relate to this. I was planning to get an iPad, but I'd have to lug around a keyboard to use with it (I'm a fast typist on a real keyboard); worst of all, I wouldn't be able to download photos from my (regular style) camera onto the iPad to get them to the Cloud. Apple's "Camera Connection Kit" doesn't seem to be the answer, by the looks of the many bad reviews. Â
So then I started leaning toward the small MacBookAir, which would be only slightly large than the iPad, but have it's own real keyboard AND have all the familiar versions of mail and other apps on it. Plus I could download my camera pics and get them to the Cloud via the laptop. BUT the problem with that is that the laptop won't connect cellularly for uploading to the Cloud—and WiFi won't be nearly as accessible as cellular in these remote areas. Â
I have a mac book with built in airport. I need to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly when I travel to southern California. I can connect to lynksys here, but in Ca. I don't seem to have a good signal except for hotspot cafes Then they don't always have lynksys. I've tried to find out how to get a better signal, but so far nobody seems to know.
I have a MacBook Air. I inserted memory stick , but it did not appear in the Finders list for Devices / Remote Discs. When I removed it, a box opened telling me I did so incorrectly. I know how to eject remote devices, but if it was not listed, I could not do it properly. Why did it not appear under Remote Discs?
I am currently trying to connect my eMac - to the internet via a stick/dongle and cannot find the appropriate vodafone software to make it work.Software version 10.5 on the mac and have two internet sticks one - a Huawei K3770 and a K3571 both with VodafoneAny idea, please, on where I can download this software and anything else I can do to to make a connection to the internet? The Vodafone software runs yet does not see either device. I wanted to know if the Travel Kit that Apple sells would be compatible with the Mac Mini. I am thinking of buying one in the US for money's sake, and I live in the UK. I just wanted to make sure that if I did get it, it wouldn't be a waste of money.Â
I am a teacher at a school which runs Macs only. I recently had a Onelan Digital Signage system installed which I can access whilst I'm at school via an IP address through a browser to edit and update contents, however this does not work outside the school. On the macs Apple Remote Desktop is enable and I can use it to remotely access Macs within school through Remote Desktop 3. I would like to access my Mac (at school) through my Windows PC at home so I can login to the digital signage system.
I want to import photos from my Sony memory stick pro duo to iMac. My imac has SD card reader but not sure whether it reads photos from memory stick pro..
i bought this iMac in May 2011. I believe this model doesn't support Memory stick pro.
I have a non-fixed IP with BT for my home network and am curious if I can set things up to access my home machines and volumes when I am abroad. A step-by-step guide to this process would, no doubt, be useful to a number of MR members. If there is a kind soul who could post an idiot-proof set of instructions that would be great, and would perhaps be put up as a user guide here at MR.
So my question is simple. I have the base 13" mbp. So I have 2 x 1GB sticks. Can I get 1 x 4GB stick and make that total 5GB? Or do I have to purchase in pairs (2 x 4GB)?
It happens constantly, whenever I try to watch streaming videos or download anything from the internet it just disconnects itself and then says " The connection was terminated my the remote site." or "the communications device." Whenever I try to change the network settings a window pops up and says my settings have been changed by another application and it stops me from clicking anyything else, i cant even close the window. I connect using an ethernet cable.
My sister in Paris has a problem with her iMac. I need to reinstal software for her. I am located in California and also have an iMac. How can I access her computer remotely?
I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.Â
I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have been doing some research on the MacBook Air's Flash Storage and according to the repair and servicing manual for the MacBook Air (see attached files) there is an actual Memory Sick that is in the MacBook Air and is not soldered to the Main Logic Board. This part of the service manual tells you how to remove the memory stick and replace it. Everyone clams it is "non-user replaceable" but this guide suggests that is it possible, if one was able to purchase one of the Memory Sicks.
I don't have access to a DVD ROM drive right now... is there anyway I can get OS X to install from a usb stick? Or even to put OS X on a usb stick (I have Leopard CD)
I cannot find why my macbook pro won't find my USB pen drive.I have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.Lastest Update and my USB Drive is a HP V210 16GB The USB drive works fine in my Laptop PC and PS3 but not my Macbook Pro. I've tried Finder Preferences - Everything is Ticked I've tried Disk Utility - Nothing But the Macbook Pro Harddrive and DVD drive I've Tried Resetting PRAM 'CMD + OPT + P + R'
I knew I should wait to see what Rev C looked like before buying an MBA, but I am disappointed that we didn't get 4GB RAM or a larger SSD. So now I'm strongly considering a new 13" MBP with 256GB SSD (or maybe 500GB SATA if it isn't too sluggish) with 4GB RAM. I know it's a steal, but on the other hand the MBA price cut is pretty tempting. Is anyone else on the fence about which to get? The 13" MBP or MBA? I'm going to college in the fall so portability is a consideration, though either option would be an improvement over my 12" iBook in terms of weight and even thinness.
I have two major concerns with the MBA rev C.:
1) The battery. 3 hours (with the MBA) is probably good enough in most cases, as this is roughly what I get currently with my iBook. However, the MBP has a major advantage with its new battery tech.
2) Hard drive. I know I would not buy a MBA unless it had a SSD in it, but I really don't know if 128GB will be enough for me down the road. It is right now (my HDD space is mostly music and iPhoto libraries...no video editing for me) but I am thinking that videos from iTunes which I may or may not begin purchasing at some point will eat up space. I would be more comfortable purchasing 250+GB of HDD space in my next computer. I remember in 2004 buying my iBook thinking that 30GB would be plenty. Boy, was I wrong!...................
I have been given a 256GB USB stick by a friend. It is labelled (falsely) as Sony.
I posted in the Macbook section since my Macbook reads it as actually holding 256GB. Suspecting this is not true (it was purchased for about $50 in China) I would like to know how I can find out it's true capacity.
is there any way for me to restore my air to factory settings without the startup usb it came with? if not will apple charge me to take it in and have them restore it for me?
The keyboard sticks while using Excel in MS office 2004. This is a very odd situation. I have a user that when she is working on her computer, the keyboard will stick when she is working in Excel. The keyboard is working as usual when she is in any other apps on the MacBook. The MacBook is running Leopard 10.5.6(?). I have not come across any other desktops, laptops running Excel or any other OS that have encountered this.
I've just come across this product at belkin. A 16 GB solid state drive, that flush fits in the express-port of the MBP.
Does this mean, that you can use this as a typical SSD if it is left in the port at all does? Running apps and stuff directly from this? Or is it just a fast type of memory-stick?
I just bought my first macbook pro (15-inch) and want to keep it in good shape. Any suggestions on shells, cases, or stick on protectors that are good for use on this computer? I have seen the ones that apple sells such as the speck products, and there are also ones like invisiShield from Zagg.
my wife was backing up her photos to our USB stick when suddenly she gets this warning...Just before she had been trying to copy some photos, but the computer didn't allow that, probably some photos were corrupted. I however found those photos on the USB stick, but they are grayed out.I can still open everything else on the stick, and copy from the stick to the desktop, but I can't delete those photos from the stick, trash simply says they can't be deleted. So I decided to simply reformat the stick. However, when I try and erase it, I get this warning
I cannot verify the permissions nor the disk, and I can't repair either, the tabs are simply grayed out. So I decided to check on the permissions on the stick, and suddenly it is in read-only mode, and I can't change it. The lock on the bottom and the droptab won't appear..I tried using google to find a solution and someone pointed out a terminal command, but everything there seemed in order.. I suddenly can only read the Volume, and nothing else, and I can't format nor repair it! I bought this stick very recently, and I want to try everything before I pick up my wallet for a new one! The problem started on my wifes 2012 MacBook Air, and still persists on my late 2011 MacBook Pro. We both have Mavericks.
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
