MacBook Air :: Vista And Multitouch Trackpad Freezes

I am about to buy a Macbook Air, and I bumped into this review by Notebook Review [URL]. Obvious problem we encountered with the multitouch touchpad under Windows was the issue of touchpad freezes and blue screens. We suspect there is an issue with the touchpad drivers for Windows since we could consistently cause a failure simply by touching the touchpad with multiple fingers. It's pretty clear there is a problem when multiple touches disable a "multitouch" touchpad.
Overall the machine seemed to enjoy running inside Vista more than it did OS 10, but bugs were prevalent all throughout bootcamp with the current Apple-provided drivers. The touchpad was the source of many problems, including six bluescreens and 30+ touchpad lockups from "multiple touches." While the features worked occasionally trying to use the scrolling motions or even tapping multiple fingers on the touchpad would be enough to lock until a reboot. The bluescreens would often come at random, with the culprit always being the "Applemtp.sys" driver crashing. More than a few times the machine would bluescreen when I was not even touching anything on the notebook.
I hoped I could use this laptop for regular work (does not require processor-intensive tasks) but now I am starting to worry. Did anyone who has installed either XP or Vista help me understand if this is something I need to think about? Anyone who has installed XP or Vista using VMWare Fusion or Parallels please let me know if Windows works well, or if it gets bothered by the multi-touch trackpad...

[URL]. Prior Symptoms (From Apple):
- When using your thumb to click an item the cursor may move slightly and not select the intended item.
- The cursor may shake when you press or remove your finger from the trackpad.
- If you press down with your thumb, then use your finger to select or drag an item, the cursor may unexpectedly release.
First of all, I'm glad that Apple has taken the time to address this major issue (finally). However, it's worse now than it was before IMO.
Resulting Symptoms:
-Single-finger physical click still does not register 20% of the time.
-When using thumb to click and drag, the cursor still releases, but now registers as a double-click.
-Tap-to-click now works, but is way too sensitive (just browsing the web took me to 10 different unintended links simply by moving the mouse around the page)
-Tap-to-click also registers as a double click more often than not.
-Two-finger tap to click now works, but you can't click out of it with your thumb still on the trackpad.
-Two-finger scroll sensitivity still hasn't been addressed.

I've experienced trackpad and keyboard freezes for quite some time now, say all of 2009. First time I took it to the apple store after my early 08 mbp would not turn on and they did a logic board replace which they tell me would also solve the freezing issues, it did. A few months go by and I started to get it again, say about a month ago. I updated to 10.6 some 2 weeks ago and didn't have the freezing issue until just a few minutes ago.
An external keyboard and mouse work fine, it's just the trackpad and keyboard that freeze up and don't work until I reboot. Long story short, I'm wondering if there's a crash report log of this and, if there is, where can I access it, see it, and where to send it or what to do with it in order to see what exactly is going on.

When I got my MacBook a few weeks back it had a faulty disc drive and subsequently got replaced to the MacBook I have now. Getting back to the point on both this macbook and the first macbook I had it had a strange issue, where sometimes the trackpad cursor would freeze for a few seconds even though I'm moving my finger over the trackpad still. It would occur more often when I have my leftside-finger on the bottom left of the corner and tracking with the my rightside-finger as you would a usual notebook...it happens quite frequently.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz from last Fall (not the new Unibody) that has a keyboard and trackpad that freezes, meaning it becomes totally unresponsive, with no warning for no reason. Either I carry an external keyboard and mouse, or, my only recourse is to hold the power button down and restart the machine. When it reboots, sometimes the keyboard works and sometimes it does not. If other folks have had or are having this problem, would you please step up and say so? I'm tired of Apple support people telling me they have never seen this problem when there are so many others who have written to the forum with the same or similar issues.

I've had a late 2011 Macbook Pro for about 4 mths and all of a sudden the trackpad has developed some problems. If I swipe a page it won't allow me to scroll up or down again on the new page that I have swiped too, it freezes. At times when I activate the back button nothing happens and I have to exit out of the site when the page freezes. The scroll only freezes immediately after swiping and not at other times when I'm moving up and down the screens.

I got a new Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2014) a few weeks ago and the trackpad and screen randomly freeze even when the only thing I have open is Safari. In other words, it doesn't feel like my computer has a 2.6 GHz Processor and 8 GB 1600 Mhz Memory. My downloads folder also constantly has the loading bar under it; it goes away when I remove it from the dock and replace it, but appears again after downloading one thing.
This is really frustrating when I got a new Macbook so that I wouldn't have to deal with these types of problems. They're all issues that I never encountered with my Macbook Air (mid-2011).

After installing 10.7.3 when waking from sleep magic trackpad sometimes freezes. If I then I use a mouse the magic trackpad starts working.

I'm wondering if the Rev. A MacBook Air's have the new features using the multitouch trackpads (like four-finger expose and all that)? I remember reading somewhere that the rev. A MBA's have the same technology driving their trackpads as the new MB's/MBP's.

Just picked up a MacBook Air myself [and LOVING it!]. I've been checking out the multitouch apis now present in AppKit (taken from cocoadex) and I'd like to get some other MacBook Air owners to try it out and tell me their impressions. The application is a simple web browser (more info at flarebrowser.googlecode site) but the multitouch version is an experimental build that's not on the site yet, so if you'd like to try it just post here and I'll let you know the link. Using multitouch you can pinch to zoom a page in/out, and three-finger-swipe to change tabs. Update: I have an experimental Intel-only build available from [URL].

I�ve a weird problem with the trackpad of my brand new 13" MacBook:
there are three user accounts on it, let�s say "Admin", "User-1" and "User-2". While the multitouch option is working fine for the "Admin" and "User-1" accounts, it does not work in the "User-2" account, no matter which settings I try in the trackpad system preferences panel.
I�m pretty sure that this has something to do with the fact that the "User-2" account is the only one that was migrated (using the migration assistant) from my old G4 iBook. I reckon that this caused some incompatible system preferences to be installed somewhere in the depths of the "system" or "user/library" folders.

Has anyone tried Jitouch and BetterTouchTools? I love them. But unfortunately I have to use both because JITouch doesn't support built-in gestures for shortcut, i.e: I love to use pinch in/out to zoom in/out in excel. BetterTouchTools support this, but not Jitouch.

I have an late 08 unibody Mbp and a 11 mba, I have noticed the glass trackpad on the air is much closer to the glass on an iphone in the way your finger reacts to it... the least bit of moisture and your finger doesn't glide as easily. On the pro it seems to have more of a coating to allow for smoother use under these normal conditions (humidity). Has anyone else noticed this? bottom line the air trackpad almost seems more polished.

My MB's trackpad button is spoilt, I think there's something wrong with the spring which makes it unclickable and sometimes remains pressed.
Is there anyway to disable only the trackpad button but not the whole trackpad? Tapping still works, but the MB mistakens it as dragging sometimes because the button is stuck as a pressed button.

I bought my Macbook in February 2008, right after the revision (system profile says Model Identifier: Macbook 4,1) and I have the 2 finger multitouch scroll, but I had been reading that SL would enable all of the multitouch gestures for Macbooks that already supported at least the 2 finger gesture. Did this end up being a rumor that was proven wrong, or did something go south in my install? I just did the upgrade, but had been thinking about wiping everything out and doing a clean install.

Apple on Tuesday released what the company heralded as the first-ever multi-touch mouse, a new product called the Magic Mouse, the successor to the Mighty Mouse. Apple said that the new multi-touch hardware allows customers to navigate using intuitive finger gestures instead of mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls. Imagine a keyboard with several of those multitouch displays instead of keys. They could be mappable via software for instant language switching, act as widgets, and give you multitouch gestures (recognizing the number of fingers that touch the keys and how they move). If Apple could keep this keyboard under $300 and release an SDK, I would be in line on day one to buy ti for my Mac. What else would you want from this keyboard, or do you think that this display is for something else entirely? I know that there is a keyboard close to this that uses non-touchscreen oled's, but I have forgot the name of it.

Apple has broken its decade-long chain of terrible mouse designs with the new multitouch, wireless Magic Mouse, although its multitouch features are somewhat limited in functionality. If previous versions of Apple's Bluetooth wireless mice and the sticky trackball of the Mighty Mouse have left you skeptical of the company's ability to design a desirable mouse, you may be in for a surprise with the new Magic Mouse. There's no real magic; just a highly accurate laser optical mouse paired with a hard plastic, multitouch surface that supports smooth document scrolling, right clicking, screen zoom, and two finger swipes. Given that Apple has pioneered practical applications of multitouch technologies in consumer products, you might have high hopes for the new mouse's multitouch surface. While scrolling up and down and left and right is smooth and satisfying, the surface of the mouse isn't big enough to act like a trackpad, so don't expect it to act like one.
Unlike Apple's multitouch trackpads, there's no provisions for touching to click (which makes little sense on a mouse), or for fancy gestures like four finger expose. You'd be hard pressed to even get four fingers in contact with the mouse's surface at once. Instead of trying to make a mouse with a conventional trackpad surface, Apple has delivered a usable Mighty Mouse that primarily uses touch sensitivity in place of a scroll ball. Touch to scroll This part works very well; there's no small ball to target, so you can freely move your fingers anywhere on the surface to scroll within documents. You can even scroll by touch without the mouse making any contact on a surface. There's also an option for scrolling with momentum, which provides a little scrolling inertia when you flick, similar to the iPhone. Scrolling within documents or menus (such as the slides list in Keynote) seems appropriately accelerated at the default speed setting. However, trying to scroll within Cover Flow requires subtle finger action, because the touch surface is tremendously sensitive (and Cover Flow exaggerates this sensitivity). Your first attempt to scroll in iTunes will likely whip you through a couple hundred albums. With some practice and patience, you'll be able to scroll album by album with finger motions that seem almost imperceptible......

I just got my new Magic Mouse and don't get the multitouch to work. Only a "real" click and moving the mouse is working right now. I don't know what I do wrong, I use 10.6.2, but to be totally sure, I even tried to install the Magic Mouse software update. Doesn't work. No mouse multitouch settings in the preferences.

(First of all for the people who will not read the thread, but just post away) I DO NOT MEAN LIKE THE iPad, BUT USING GESTURES ON A PHYSICAL KEYBOARD Okay, would you buy a keyboard where the keys are coated in the Apple Trackpads' glass and have touch sensors built-in. It would allow you to do things like swipe three fingers in the same row to start a new paragraph and automatically indent, Finger swipe up for select all, some undo commands, and a lot of other typing related gestures.

I'm bad at Photoshop. I really wish for the 3 user customizable keys, personally I would use the top two buttons for previous/next Space, and the bottom key to switch to my iTunes. And the trackpad to the right could be used for customizable multitouch gestures, so you can move around spaces easily, scroll with 2 fingers if you have a desktop and not a laptop, etc. I think it's very important that Apple includes multitouch for desktop users and not just laptop people.
