Jul 27, 2006hi all. i bought an ibook g3 500 with a dvd-rom on ebay recently, and just got it yesterday, and noticed something weird. for some reason it doesn't read cd's. when i put a cd in, the tray pops open a few seconds later. is that normal? dvd's work just fine. i would think that a dvd-rom would be able to read cd's. no?

Sep 3, 2007my ibook doesn't read dvds anymore like it used to, but it will read blank ones if i use an external dvd drive, but when i try and insert a normal dvd (ive tried a lot of dvds so its not just one disc) in the laptop drive or the external one, it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and gives me an option to ignore or eject.
i tried creating a new account, but the same thing happened, so i used my install disks to install mac os x on an external drive and booted from that and the disk worked! but, ive got lots of important data on the laptop drive, so im stuck here.

May 11, 2009I have an ibook G3 dual usb which was running Tiger but after an update to 10.4.11 I think it is, was running very slowly and the browser (i tried safari, camino and firefox) was constantly crashing. I have a back-up copy of retail Tiger on DVD as my original disc is scratched and no longer reads.I erased the hdd in hope of a clean install, but when I tried to boot from the dvd it just showed up with the flashing ? I know the disc will boot as it works in my G4 powerbook.

Oct 17, 2007The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.

Apr 22, 2012I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?

There are two MacBooks and two PCs that connect to the network. I only need my MacBook to be able to write to the hard drive but I need the two PCs to be able to access and use the files on the hard drive. I was going to get a 1TB external and give it two partitions. The first partition is going to be the Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other will be accessed by all computers on the network. Jun 8, 2009I knew I should wait to see what Rev C looked like before buying an MBA, but I am disappointed that we didn't get 4GB RAM or a larger SSD. So now I'm strongly considering a new 13" MBP with 256GB SSD (or maybe 500GB SATA if it isn't too sluggish) with 4GB RAM. I know it's a steal, but on the other hand the MBA price cut is pretty tempting. Is anyone else on the fence about which to get? The 13" MBP or MBA? I'm going to college in the fall so portability is a consideration, though either option would be an improvement over my 12" iBook in terms of weight and even thinness.
I have two major concerns with the MBA rev C.:
1) The battery. 3 hours (with the MBA) is probably good enough in most cases, as this is roughly what I get currently with my iBook. However, the MBP has a major advantage with its new battery tech.
2) Hard drive. I know I would not buy a MBA unless it had a SSD in it, but I really don't know if 128GB will be enough for me down the road. It is right now (my HDD space is mostly music and iPhoto libraries...no video editing for me) but I am thinking that videos from iTunes which I may or may not begin purchasing at some point will eat up space. I would be more comfortable purchasing 250+GB of HDD space in my next computer. I remember in 2004 buying my iBook thinking that 30GB would be plenty. Boy, was I wrong!...................

Jul 18, 2010I just jumped on the Mac train and bought a Macbook Pro 13". There's a dead pixel on the screen. I'm taking it back to the retailer tomorrow. The retailer has a zero dead pixel guarantee on monitors so I'm going to hope that covers laptops too. I just wanted to know how many others have experienced dead pixels on purchasing a new Macbook Pro - i.e. what's the likelihood that the next one I get will have a dead pixel?

Jun 26, 2009Does anyone know if you can upgrade say the hard disk of a base level macbook pro (13 inch i'm looking at) AT the apple store? I guess to illustrate my point - I'm looking at the baseline 13 inch macbook pro and I wanted to upgrade the hard drive from the 160 gb - maybe the 300 or 500 gb hard drive. Because I'm only stopping by for a day I wanted to buy one on the spot (thus getting it at an apple store rather than buying it online).
