MacBook Air :: Microsoft Silverlight Will Cause Battery Consumption Like Flash?
Nov 7, 2010
we all know flash is a battery eater so to prevent this is install click to flash then it will indicate every pages that runs flash has this word "flash" on webpage which is good thing.now, i am a netflix subscriber and to watch movies you have to install microsoft silverlight..i dont have any choice to install it. if i open a webpage for example cnn.com yahoo.com etc.. how can i determine that those sites are using silverlight?i believe silverlight will cause battery consumption like flash right?
Every time I attempt to watch a video or Netflix, my player won't work and tell me to download the new version. I do so, and restart the browser and they tell me the same thing. I have tried deleting the old versions and emptying the trash, I have tried restarting my computer, I have no firewall up. Nothing will make them work.
I would like to use Netflix to watch a few tv shows or movies on my Air, but in order to work, I need to download this plug-in. Does anyone know how this will impact battery life? Does the plug-in only run when needed or will it always be running in the background?
accidentally deleted adobe flash player and silver light plug in. Netflix and videos on Facebook will no longer load. I reinstalled both but it's like nothing happened neither one work. what's the issue?
I've got a 27" iMac, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5, running the latest Snow Leopard update. In browsing thru my Applications folder I noticed that I have an app called "Microsoft Silverlight".I never downloaded that app. Is that part of Snow Leopard? If not, why do I have it, what does it really do? I searched the internet but do not really understand it., do I need it? Will it degrade performance if I uninstall it? What is your advice? As you can probably tell, I am a relatively new Mac user and not a computer expert.
Getting fustrated with my Macbook Pro 15''. Could never get battery to last more than 5-6 hours. This is the MAX i can achieve, with great pains to enhance battery life.
Argh, what's wrong with my Macbook Pro?
Check out the amperage drain. At this rate the Macbook Pro wouldn't last more than 5 hours. This is with half brightness, only finder and Chrome open, and the battery recently calibrated.
The amperage drain increases to -1400+ when i have more tabs open, and a few other apps.
However there was this ONE RARE OCCASION, where my Macbook Pro would only drain between -700 to -800 amperage. This was in normal usage and the battery easily lasted closer to 8 hours. But somehow, i can never replicate this anymore!
I have a unibody macbook pro 15 inch, 2.8 Ghz, 4gb ram, 500Gb HDD. There are various display settings like 1440x900, 1344x840, 1280x800, 1024x768 and so on till 640x480 (descending order). Will the battery consumption vary at different display settings? If so, how much of a difference will it make?
i recently got netflix and it requires Microsoft Silverlight. I've heard a lot of bad things about it interfering with other video watching programs and it being hard to fully remove and etc is this true, even worth installing?
So I have a late 2008 MBP and the battery is draining way faster than it should. Coconut battery says that my battery capacity is at 93% and it only has 73 cycles but the battery has only been lasting 3 hours at best with a full charge, but most typically, it only lasts 2 hours while using the 9400m GPU and at idle. I have reset the battery per apple's instructions 2 times now and I have reset the SMC multiple times. this is what the system profiler says about my power capacity and consumption:
Model Information: Serial Number:6N839TV313EB Manufacturer:SMP Device name:bq20z951 Pack Lot Code:0000 PCB Lot Code:0000 Firmware Version:002a Hardware Revision:000a Cell Revision:0100 Charge Information: Charge remaining (mAh):3522 Fully charged:No Charging:No Full charge capacity (mAh):4226 Health Information: Cycle count:72 Condition:Normal Battery Installed:Yes Amperage (mA):-1449 Voltage (mV):11830
This all happened out of nowhere one day, I used to get a solid 5 hours on each charge a month ago and now this.
Two quick questions: - Is it bad to have the keyboard backlight always on? Will it somehow burn out the little lights? - How much less battery power will I lose if I have the backlight always on? (I use Labtick).
I know that Flash uses more battery power. However is that only when you are actually using a window that needs Flash. Does just installing it decrease your battery performance in any way? I am running into lots of sites that require Flash and I would like to install it but not at the risk of severely limiting my battery usage when not actually using it.
I used my 13.3/1.86/4GB MBA to watch football today and was pretty surprised with the poor battery results. Would this seem normal?
Took off charger at 11:45AM CST, battery 100%Apps open - Mail, Chrome, Parallels with Win XP running, no XP apps open11:45-12:00pm - Simple browsing, no flash running (I use FlashBlock)12:00pm - I start up one window for NFL Sunday Ticket Online, Flash fullscreen video and one window for my Yahoo Fantasy Sports which also uses Flash. For the bulk of the time the NFL game is on fullscreen video with my Fantasy app running in the background1:15pm - I notice my battery is down to 48% with approx 1 hr 10 min remaining. I check my screen brightness and it is at 100% (not sure why), I reduce brightness to 50%1:15 - I use the computer same as at 12:00pm but now at 50% brightness 2:20 - My computer goes into hibernation (there was a low battery warning about 5-10 mins earlier.
So I essentially got 2 1/2 hours of usage with the bulk being heavy usage with flash. For the bulk of the time the computer was using 50-60% of the processor and the exhaust was about 3400rpm (the fan was audible but not loud). Does this usage time seem normal for what I did? I would have expected at least to get 4-5 hours with a 13.3 using flash. Also I was surprised that the battery life didn't improve at all after dropping screen brightness from 100% to 50%.
I am planning to buy a new 13" MBP but I am kind of concerned on the battery performance. Specs: a) 2.26 GHz CPU b) Upgrade RAM to 4GB c) Upgrade HD to 500GB 5400 WD d) Brightness at 70% / with keyboard backlight / Bluetooth OFF
Questions: (Can you give me an estimate on the following) 1) How long will the battery last if I play Facebook games nonstop (poker / mafia wars / cafe world / etc.) 2) How long will the battery last if I play Sims3 nonstop? 3) How long will the battery last if I watch a DVD movie nonstop? (from the drive) 4) How long will the battery last if I type documents nonstop? BTW, can this MBP 13" play sims3 in the default normal settings?
Apple has stopped bundling Adobe Flash on new Macs, ostensibly so users could obtain the latest, secure version themselves, but vastly increased battery life seems to be another leading reason.
According to testing performed by Chris Foresman of Ars Technica, the new MacBook Air can last for a full six hours after loading a series of webpages in Safari, but its battery performance drops down to four hours once Adobe Flash is installed and the same sites are loaded.
"Flash-based ads kept the CPU running far more than seemed necessary," Foresman wrote. Without the Flash plugin installed, websites typically display static ads in place of Flash content, erasing the need for constant processing power demanded by the Flash plugin's rendering engine.
With Flash ads consuming as much as 33 percent of the MacBook Air's battery potential, it's no wonder why Apple has demonstrated no interest in getting a version of Flash installed on its iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, all of which have much smaller batteries.
This summer, Adobe launched a public relations attack on Apple for failing to support Flash on its iOS devices, nor allowing Adobe to deliver a version of Flash for the iOS platform, nor approving apps for the iOS that were created in Adobe's Flash Professional application. Apple has backed away from refusing to approve apps created with third party tools, but has shown no interest in getting Flash content to run on its iOS.
When asked for "any updates" on the company's stance on Flash during its quarterly earnings report, chief executive Steve Jobs quipped, "flash memory? We love flash memory," before taking the next question.
Apple's removal of Adobe's Flash plugin from a default install on the new MacBook Air coincided with the company's debut of a more conservative new "wireless productivity test" it said was more in line with actual use, and better standardized for accurate comparisons between models. Being able to test the new machine without its battery being taxed by Flash ads certainly helps the company achieve better results.
The Shrinking Flash Platform
Microsoft stopped bundling Adobe Flash with the release of Windows Vista in 2007, although its motivation was likely due to the company's efforts to push its rival Silverlight plugin. However, Windows implements Flash as an ActiveX control, which means users can click on Flash placeholders within a webpage and the Flash plugin will install itself. New Mac users will have to manually download and install Flash from Adobe in order to make it available.
Apple sells far more iOS devices than Macs, and no iOS devices support runtimes for Flash content. That has had a major effect upon advertisers, publishers, website design, and online video broadcasters, who have collectively made monumental shifts away from Flash. This in turn has made Flash playback far less important on the desktop than it was just a year or two ago, although there is still important content tied to Flash.
Apple has removed Flash content from its own website, although it also has supported Adobe's efforts to add hardware acceleration to the Mac OS X version of Flash, and has approved the Skyfire plugin for iOS' Mobile Safari, which uses a gateway service to translate Flash videos into HTML5 videos that can play on Apple's devices.
I was watching Netflix and all of a sudden it said i needed to download the latest version of Silverlight. i clicked on the link, downloaded it, it said it installed successfully and all i had to do was reopen safari.but when i did that it still said i needed to install Silverlight. i keep retrying to download it but nothing seems to work.
Both the silverlight and Adobe reader icon stays on my desktop after I have installed. I can move the "dmg" icon to the application folder, but the other 2 icons will not stay in the applications folder when I try to drag.
Is it normal for SSDs to use the same or more power as a HD?
SSD An OWC Mercury Exreme Pro 40GB SSD uses 2.2W-2.5W when active. A WD SiliconEdge Blue 64GB SSD uses 2W when reading and 3.5W when writing. An OCZ VERTEX 2 40GB SSD uses 2W when in operation.
HD A WD Scorpio Blue (5400rpm, 2.5") 250GB HD uses 2.5W when writing/reading. A WD Scorpio Black (7200rpm, 2.5") 250GB HD uses 2.5W when writing/reading. A Hitachi Travelstar 5K750 (5400rpm, 2.5") 500GB HD uses 1.4W when writing/reading.
I've noticed that my macbook pro has been using a lot of RAM. I haven't really witnessed a slowdown on my computer b/c of any sort of shortage of RAM but I was just curious if this was typical (since this is my first mac). I have 4 GB of RAM and I often find myself with around 1-1.5 GB of free + inactive RAM. I had a linux system with 3 GB RAM before and it used between 1-1.8 GB of RAM and it seems like this system is using around 2.5-3 GB (active + wired). However, various OS X laptops in the past have functioned really well in the past with 2 GB and even 1 GB of RAM right? Is OS X just putting more processes in my RAM to speed up my system because more RAM is available OR does snow leopard just have high memory consumption?
I have tried to install silverlight several times and keep getting the error that the installer quit unexpectedly. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I could not find a solution for this anywhere. I tried to also access the plug-in on the HD and it never opened up.
How to calculate the regular MacBook power consumption if it is left on lowest screen brightness for about 12 hours, plugged in, with just a browser running Gmail? The following is the System Profiler->Power Information that pertains to this topic:

I just did a system update and now google chrome and the silverlight plugin do not work. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both numerous times, restarted, and checked for updates again but nothing works. What's going on?

Just wondering if anyone out there has done a test to compare the battery life of their laptop running videos under HTML5 vs the same video with the flash 10.2 beta?
I installed Microsoft Office for Mac 2008, but I really do not want or need Microsoft Entourage or Messenger. I have read that if you only uninstall part of Microsoft Office, it'll create problems with the other programs in the suite. How can I go about safely uninstalling these programs? Do I need to fully uninstall and then re-install? I made sure while installing Office to opt for a custom installation so I could un-check Entourage and Messenger. However, I didn't see those specific programs on the custom installation list. Are they maybe under a different name (like, for example, "Microsoft Essentials")? I don't know what to do. Help is much appreciated!
I have been trying to access sky desktop this evening and can't until I upgrade to microsoft silverlight 5 but I can't remove microsoft silverlight 4 from my computer. I have had a look online and all of the instructions that I have found haven't made any sense to me. Please help (but using nice easy instructions!)
How do I completely uninstall Silverlight? I've used command-F in finder to find everything Silverlight and then delete it. Even then, my browsers still try to use silverlight for video on sites like [URL].
I go to [URL] and I get nothing but zeroes Chrome and Firefox all list the version installed. I need silverlight on safri to run a company application.
