I recently purchased a MacBook Air to replace my broken Windows laptop. The Windows laptop was backed up every Sunday night onto an external hard drive. Is it possible to download the files and folders within the Windows back up file onto my MacBook Air?
View 5 RepliesAwhile back I bought a 500 GB Seagate FreeAgent Go external hard drive to backup my 218 GB PC. I used the automatic backup software that came with it and it works fine. After all this I purchased a MacBook Pro and now, instead of buying another drive and also considering there's plenty of space on the one I already have, I was wondering if I could possibly partition half the drive to be used as a backup with Time Machine without touching the other half. I plugged in the drive to my Mac and opened Disk Utility. It says it is a NTFS file system (I suppose that's normal).

It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

I am having some issues with my Macbook. It doesn't matter what file it is. Every time I download a .dmg file and it finishes its download and is about to mount, my mac freezes up and a dark screen drops down and tells me to reboot my computer?

I bought a refurbished MacBook from Micro Centers, with the Leopard operating system on it. I upgraded the memory from 2G to 4Gig. I bought Snow Leopard and upgraded the operating system.Then I bought Lion from The App Store and downloaded it. Everything seems to be working fine except when I try to download Apps from the App Store, I get a warning saying "We could not complete your purchase.The product distribution file could not be verified. My question is that I downloaded some widgets today for the desktop like "The Weather Channel" one. When it finished downloaded, it appeared on the desktop as two files a zip file and another file. I then had to click on it to run it but in the end I had to move the zip file to the trash after I was done installing it. Is that normal. Should there be two files each time. Do I need to turn on/off a setting.
Also happened when I clicked on a video to watch, I was streaming it but when I flashed to my desktop it downloaded it also. Is this normal.
I purchased and downloaded Lion, but didn't make a backup copy. OK, I realize I should have copied the file before I installed it, but now what? How do I go about downloading the software without purchasing the same thing again?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.

Apologies if there are other specific threads like this, I did do an MRoogle search but couldn't find one.I've just got a new 15" 2.66ghz i7 MacBook Pro, and have Windows 7 64 bit ready to install. My question is, once I have it installed, with all the Snow Leopard drivers and 3.1 update, should I continue to download drivers from the manufacturers's websites, or just stick to the ones that Apple hands out in their updates?I suppose I'm specifically asking about the NVIDIA drivers. Should I install the most recent drivers for the 330m, or again just stick to the Apple ones?

I've just got myself a nice new Mac Pro and am really surprised to find that it is more different to Windows than I was expecting. I feel like a toddler trying to learn a new language to do all the things I am used to doing on Windows.

On Windows, whenever you downloaded something, you were given a % telling you how much had been downloaded and how much was left still. It also gave you the progress in gb / kb.Surely there must be a way of having this info show whenever I download something ? I really do not want to go to the App Store and start buying things.
We just purchased an older mac book pro to replace our even older G4 powerbook which cannot run some of the software my wife wants.This has both OSX LION and Windows 7 using Bootcamp on it.As soon as we get it we will want to make a clone backup of the hard drive.With the powerbook we used a combination of CCC (carbon copy cloner) and time machine.While CCC will clone the OSX partition it will not work on the Windows partition of the hard drive.While I realize that I could use a Windows based product to clone that portion I really would prefer that the clone be made of the entire disk with a product that relies on neither system.Back in the day we used to write stuff like that, but I keep thinking someone else must have already done so.

I've got to transfer 250GB ish of files from an OSX machine (HFS+) onto a Linux EXT3 machine and a Windows NTFS machine.
The problem is that I've got lots of odd named folders/files on the OSX machine that are not compatible on the linux/windows machines.
For example :
"OLDER THAN 12/08/09" becomes "ONM6U4~U"
How am I going to get these files over properly keeping the file/foldernames as intact as possible?
i have newish MBP and iMac. I also run several windows 7 based pc's. Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly. Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale. I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.

I am currently making the switch from Windows, I can't wait for my MacBook to arrive. My lovely Dell currently has a 320 GB HD that would prove a very nice external backup storage unit. I plan to remove it and find a case to mount and use it as such!
Only problem is, I'm fairly certain that I'll run into some compatibility issues and have never used an external HD. I'm unsure of how the process works. This is the HD in my personal laptop (only PC I own), so it's not like I have it hooked up to play around with as an external at the moment.
