This file size is unreasonably huge, by deleting things off my Mac, this number went no where but up. How do I get the Backups size down?

I am creating a digital album booklet for a band I manage, basically I took a high res photo and type the lyrics of each song over it, then added additional pics, the booklet is roughly 33 pics. I am using Photoshop and saving each file as a PDF, I then plan on combining them all at once. I know there has to be a better way to get this done. Right now each photo is roughly 3.3mb, that's way too big! How do I get the size down?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.Â
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.Â

I just bought an external hard drive and am using it to back-up my MacBook Pro with Time Machine. Both my MBP hard drive and external hard drive are 500 GB, but I noticed that my MBP HD has 85 GB of files on it while my back-up HD only has about 70 GB. I just want to make sure all of my files are backed up properly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using time capsule for only a few weeks and I have noticed that the file it has created "Elliot Newman's MacBook Pro_001b63936847.sparsebundle" only reads a file size of 95GB, when the disk I am backing up has 148GB used. Does this mean the backup doesn't contain all my files? I have to say it concerns me a little that the backup shows only a single file, is there anyway to see the files that time capsule has backed up? I am updating my MacBook soon with a bigger internal drive and I want to make sure all my files are backed up before I do this.

I have a mac mini with 8 gbytes of RAM. When my wife and I are both logged in (but only one actively, of course),
the memory usage goes up to maximum (7.94gbytes).  Of this, only 2.8gbytes are app memory, with 4 gbytes of file cache.Â
This seems ridiculously high. Is there a way for me to instruct the mac os to use less file cache?
I have used the standard "Reduce File Size" Quartz filter but find the resulting files way too grainy. I want to have a filter that is a stand between but cannot seem to make a filter using the ColorSync utility that applies to PDFs. I want a free method to do this of course and am pretty confused as to why Apple hasn't given the user the option to control the output of the PDF in Preview. That is basic PDF viewer material.

And I was wondering what is this "page ins and page outs" and i saw it's already above a gigabyte on both pages, the swap used is very big, it's 2.35 gb, and my VM size is 304 GB!!! Should I worry about these numbers on my mac why are they too big? and what are some ways to reduce this "page outs & swap used." (Btw, there's only 20% left of my 500gb hard drive and I always use big apps like Logic Pro X and 9.1.8 and I always play dots 2 here on my mac.)

I understand the reason for it and I did not want a 15 inch as I tend to work with multiple programs at once. I am not tied to an office so that rules out buying an external screen, So I have been trying to find solutions that makes working with in different programs less of a strain on my eyes. I bought a larger Time Machine hard drive and now I need to copy the old Backups.backupdb file onto the new drive. Â
Whenever I try to do so it gives the message "The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled.".Â

Somehow, when installing RealPlayer I managed to get something called RealNetwork (a Folder full of files) installed in my User Library. It was 395.62 GB so must have been some sort of malware. I was able to find it and delete it from my hard drive. BUT I had backed up my hard drive to a non-bootable backup the day before so that file is still in the invisible Library folder on that drive, taking up almost 400 GB there, too. Â
How to delete it from the backup drive since I can't boot that drive?Â

Comp has been running really sluggish lately, hard time running safari with a few tabs open, fan runs at max speed 24/7 and everything takes a long time to load. Took it to genius bar, they checked some hardware, and recommended I basically format and start over.. I don't want to do that. I have a macbook pro, 2 gig of ram. Noticed that the vm size is like 130 gig, page in - 300mb, page out - 1.6mb. I typically don't run anything but safari/firefox, adium, itunes, movie players etc. I've been told that, those programs don't require that much ram, but do I need to upgrade to 3 or 4 gigs?

i am having a minor problem with TM
i use 1 external tb to back up everything
i back up about 725 gb if stuff and when i go to run my TM it tells me i only have 150 or so GB of space to back up the aforementioned 725gb.
Maybe i misunderstood TM, but cant i back up multiple days without using the same size of backup? i.e. i back up january 1st, december 1st and november 1st and it wont need 2.175 TB of space?

I have been running Parallels windows 7 + photoshop CS5 + MS word at the same time by bouncing from one to the other on MTN Lion, My machine was running at about 115-120F and an average speed of 1998 rpm-2200 rpm. I have just upped to Mavericks and running same programs My temperature zoomed up to 215F and my speed to 3800 rpm.
I haven't backed up my macbook in a couple days since I've been out of town and did not have access to my external hard drive. A little while ago I plugged in the hard drive and told time machine to do a backup. The backup started at around 24GB, which I thought was weird because I didn't change that much. An hour or so later it is still climbing and is at 77.1GB. By the time I finish typing this it will probably be even larger. The weird thing is it says 77.1 of 77.1 but then both numbers just keep simultaneously growing. I'm using a Seagate Desk and bucking up and aluminum unibody macbook running 10.58.

I recently picked up a 1TB WD external with Firewire (pre-formatted FAT32) and have been transferring movies and such fine, but I just tried transferring an HD movie (5GB) and some large .dmg's/.iso's and they all just fail with an error.
Is this a size limitation, and will i need to reformat the drive to fix it, or is there something else I'm missing?
