How can I change my safari preferences to save a file rather than it downloading

I think most people here know how to use Safari to download internet videos from sites such as YouTube. Simply go to Activity, find the appropriate file based on the file size. Double click it, and the FLV file would automatically be downloaded.
This also works for MP4 files, at least it used to before the last Safari update a few months back. Now, whenever I try to do the same operation on an MP4 file, it opens and plays the file within Safari itself instead of saving it. This is really frustrating! Does anyone know how to get around this ridiculous issue? I searched all over the web but it seems no one else is bothered by this.

For my movies and pictures i have a mixture of folders and files.
See here:
files and folders are mixed together. I usually always right click and select keep arranged by "kind" to get this arranged by kind. But the problem is every time i exit the folder it reverts back to being mixed. Is there ANY way to save these changes to always have my files arranged by kind?
Is it possible to save a PDF file as an eBook so that others can download it onto their iPad?

Since I installed Firefox 12, I can't change my default browser preferences in Safari. Safari defaults to Firefox 12 no matter what browser I select. Anyone else having this problem? Mac OS 10.7.3, Safari 5.1.5 & Firefox 12.

View 15 Replies View RelatedOn a couple, but not all, of my financial institutions webpages, I can't download the statements and save them as pdf. When I click the pdf link, a page opens showing the statement, but to see it all, one has to scroll the screen. When I try to print it, by clicking File on the toolbar, the pulldown menu gives me only the option of Print Largest Frame which prints only what is visible on the screen in the window. When I try to save by going to File, then Save As, a window opens for print options giving me two format choices: Page Source (html) or Web Archive, but no pdf. The statements never download, nor open as pdf.Â
What is odd, is that this issue is not common to all financial institutions. On some, the statements read, load, save, and print as pdf just fine. I have updated the Adobe Reader, and all software on my Mac.Â

When I try to download free sound effects or video files, I try doing a Save As in Safari, but each time I get the error "the document 'click.mp3" could not be exported as 'click.mp3'". In FireFox I can download any of these files with no problem. Did Apple change something in Safari that this no longer works? It's a pain in the butt to change browsers every time I need to download a file.

For example; Numbers keeps opening downloaded files intended for Quicken. I can change the program to open the download, but I can't find a way to make the change be the default.

Since the last upgrade I seem to have a problem changing the download location. Safari seems not to accept locations outside the home folder even with the same permissions (drwx------) and no log entries are generated. I've also tried 0777 with no success. Also, I've tried to create links to the external directory but it still defaults back to the home directory. I had some success with Automator - Finder move - but it gives me a 'disk full' error when downloading.

I have a mass amount of files to download listed on a Web page. When I click the link, the file downloads, but the link on my downloads page never changes colors to note that the link has been visited. Â
Is this a bug and is there a work around for my HTML page? Currently I'm using javascript to change link colors.
I've recently switched from Firefox to Safari for using my email and can't figure out how to download files to different folders in my computer. It keeps downing loading them into a Safari Downloads file. I figured out how to change the defualt location, but I have to go back into the download file folder and move the downloaded files to the correct folders. I want it to ask each time like Firefox. There has got to be a fix for this as this is taking a lot more time than it did in Firefox.

A few days ago my email was hacked into which sent a spam email to all my contacts. I changed my password to that account, warned everyone in my contacts, and haven't had a problem with email since. However, I tried to do the 'delete all cookies' again and when I go to safari/preferences/privacy...there is nothing on that screen under that tab. Not even a question mark. I changed my history items to be removed every day from every week but don't think that would be the issue.Â

As stated in the title, when I try to download a file from the internet, clicking on the link associated to the file will not start a download, but instead opens a new tab in my browser showing the url of the associated file. If I then right-click and choose 'Download linked file as...' the file can be downloaded with no issues in most of the cases, at least as long as the website allows right-click downloads to happen.I have tried resetting Safari, emptying the cache and, of course, updating my software. It is a midly annoying problem, but it doesn't happen when I use other web browsers in my iMac.

I have a standard Macbook. I bought a mini DVI-VGA adapter so I could connect my Sony LCD Multi Function Display and my Macbook together. The connection works fine, but I am having a serious problem with the display. The monitor shows the wallpaper of my macbook but does not show anything I open. So for example, the wall paper is there, but if I open Safari, it doesn't reflect this on the monitor. Only when I try to change the display preferences on my macbook does something show up on the monitor.

So this is a really silly question but I wanted to know, how do you change the name of your home drive? Like I know how you can change the user name in system pref. but how do you change the name next to the little house icon? Because I'm really super bad at explaining things, a picture is attached below.

Say I go into System Pref.>Energy Saver Prefs.....

As of right now my the Energy System Pref. doesn't have any settings at all. It's just..
I have just recently upgraded to Lion and created a Snow Leopard partition to run some of my old pieces of music software. I've got a bit of annoying problem where I can't chnge the mouse preferences in the Snow Leopard partition. I can change the dropdown boxes to set the right click etc. and they stay populated all the while that System Preferences is open. However, the funcitonality of the buttons does not change and when closing and re-opening System Preferences the dropdowns are populated with the default options again.Â
I've tried deleting SystemPreferences.plist but this hasn't helped. EDIT: I've also removed the Documents and Downloads stacks from my dock and since restarting these have appeared again. As has the System Preferences icon in the Dock. It seems to be more widespread than just mouse preferences.Â

View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently when trying to download/open a file from the internet - my machine prompted me as usual with the grey box that says: You have chosen to open, then says What should Firefox do with this file? Option: 1) open with (then select the program - i.e. word, internet ,etc) or to 2) save file or 3) do this automatically for files like this from now on. I need to figure out how to un-select the 3rd option.

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust put together a CV using Open Office, it's currently saved as a .odt. I'll be sending this out to a few companies and I'd like to know what the best file type is to select that will be readable by everyone? When I go to 'save as' I see a long list of options and I'm not sure which one to pick so that PC users can view.
Or can they load the .odt file just fine?
