Besides the obvious fact that one is portable and the other is not. Does the portable one have an increased chance of failing due to it being moved around a lot more?If not, then why don't everyone just get a portable external hdd to back up their data?Just curious as I look into getting a hdd soon to back up my data using time machine.

I've had a LaCie Porsche Design for the last 6 years with no problems but with the upgrade to a MBP I'm looking to get a new portable hard drive (LaCie or another brand). My old LaCie was FW400 so I'd be looking at FW800 now. Which make and model do you use and are you happy with it's performance?

MacBook Pro :: Best Portable External Hard Drive Interface?

Mar 29, 2012

I have a MacBook Pro (just got it this year) and I need a portable external hard drive. I also want to use it on my PC. Which interface would you suggest? I am not sure which connections my PC has but I know it has USB 3.0. Is there an interface on my MacBook that's faster than USB 3.0? If so, I might forget about connecting it to my PC, assuming it's significantly faster.

MacBook Pro :: Store Photos On A Portable External Hard Drive?

I want to move my photos from my laptop to an external hard drive.  I already own a Seagate which is formatted for a PC, with photos already on it.  I do not want to lose those photos and have been told by Apple tech that the seagate can be reformatted for mac.  How do I do this without losing the PC photos already on it.  Is there any difference between photos transferred from a PC or a MAC ?

OS X :: Copying Large Files From A Bus Powered USB External?

Jun 18, 2008

I think I have found a bug in Finder where I cannot copy large files from a bus powered USB external. I get this error:

"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "..." could not be read or written (Error code -36)"

I think I have eliminated hardware as an issue:

1. The problem is repeatable (and always happens) on my Intel Macbook Pro, Intel Mac Mini and G4 Mac Mini

2. The problem happens whether I have formatted the external as HFS+ or NTFS (I can't use FAT32 for files over 4GB, e.g. VMWare disk images)

3. I can copy the files off the external with my Windows Vista machine (mostly dormant these days) and an XP laptop (I use for work), using Explorer.

4. The same problem happens with two different external enclosures (An Xtatix Portadrive and a Beyond Micro mobile Disk). I have also tried 3 different 2.5" drives in these enclosures.

5. If I boot my Macbook Pro into Vista using Bootcamp, I CAN successfully copy the files using Explorer.

6. I CAN also copy the files OK if I use Terminal and the 'cp' command (it works for all 3 machines)

7. I have NO problems with large files and Finder if I use a powered external with 3.5" drives via USB or Firewire (HFS+ or NTFS) on any of the Macs.

As you see, I think I've been pretty thorough. It seems as though Finder must be at fault when used with a bus powered USB external.

I should also mention that all 3 of my Macs are on Leopard 10.5.3, though I did also boot a my Intel Mac Mini into Tiger with the same result (Finder failed, 'cp' worked).

I have reported the problem to Apple, but wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue...and hey, a solution would be a great bonus!

Mac Mini :: External Display Is Connected When Powered Off - How To Know About It

Aug 16, 2010

I have a 2009 Mac Mini connected to a 22" LG monitor via Mini-DVI port and it's also connected to a 50" Pioneer Plasma (in the next room) via Mini-Displayport. Everything works perfect except that when I turn off the Pioneer Plasma, my mouse can still scroll over from the LG monitor to the Plasma.

I've also noticed that my screensaver is laggy even when the Plasma is turned off (usually that happens when it's drawing the screensaver on both screens) so it must still be sending a video signal out of the Mini Displayport.

Hardware :: Connect External Bus - Powered Firewire 800 Hard Drive To 400 Adapter

Oct 1, 2008

I'm looking for a way to connect an external bus-powered Firewire 800 hard drive (Glyph Portagig 800) to an iMac which only has Firewire 400 ports, and still powering the drive through just the Firewire connector.

All I've found are Firewire 400 to 800 adapters, allowing Firewire 400 peripherals to be connected to computers having only Firewire 800 ports. I need the opposite of course.
Where can I get such adapters, and without sacrificing bus-power?

Hardware :: Desktop / Portable External Hard Drive And Time Machine With AEX

Aug 7, 2010

Would a USB bus-powered portable external hard drive (Like the WD Passport) be slower at backing up than an AC powered desktop external hard drive? I've got a desktop external hard drive that I'm using for Time Machine backups over WiFi connected to an airport extreme, but it's dieing and I'd like to replace it. Preferably I'd like to get a 1gb portable drive so I can use it for both backing up and travelling - however if it will result in slower speeds in transferring data then I'll just get a desktop drive.

Mac Mini :: Bus Powered External Drives On Mac Mini?

Mar 16, 2009

As I am looking around at all the usb 2.5" drives I have laying around, I was wondering if there is a limit to the number of bus powered drives that the Mac Mini could run at one time.

I have never run more than one self powered drive on a computer before - so I was wondering if there was a limit that the Firewire/USB bus power can support.

Ideally I would love to be able to run one bus powered firewire 800 drive, and three usb bus powered drives - I'm just not sure if that is possible or advisable...

MacBook :: USB Port Over Powered Through Hub?

Mar 20, 2009

I recently got a Macbook and have a iPhone and iPod shuffle. The thing is there isn't enough usb ports on the Macbook so I had to get a hub. The hub I got IS self powered and does not require a external power adapter. My concern is that I am withdrawing too much power from my usb port through this hub. It is a 4 port hub and a External HDD ( has own power supply), Optical mouse is connected to it. also I charge my iPhone and shuffle via the same hub.

I am afraid that there is power limit feature and it will fry my computer. I notice if I boot in boot camp to windows. Windows will display a error message telling me, I am not allowed to have this many device drawing this much power. Anyone know if I should be okay as long as OS X doesn't give me a message or should I really consider getting a USB hub with its own power adaptor?

MacBook ::powered On But Not Boot-up

Oct 27, 2009

I share a quite common problem. My macbook doesnt boot-up.It does power on and gets into the booting up process but nothing happens...
To be more precise, after powering on the MB, the grey display appears and after a while the apple logo and the circle of lines starts to move around.

After that nothing else happens...

I ve tried everything possible... SMC reset, PRAM reset, verifying the disc by booting up either from single user and check it with fsck or with the booting disc and run all the verifying tests and the repair ones... Everything there were just as NORMAL...The OS refuses to open either in normal mode, or at safe mode or even the verbose mode, though it does boot up in single-user mode.

I even took out the HDD and place it in a HDD cover and then plug it as an external device to my other MBP. I run the tests once again but everything seems to be NORMAL again...The only thing that is left to check is whether the boot files have any problem...

Mac Pro :: Frozen Macbook When Powered Up On Battery / Fix It?

Apr 15, 2009

My battery seems to have lost the plot. I can turn my machine on when running off the battery and it fires up as normal. Once it gets to my desktop everything is frozen. The arrow is always stuck in the top left corner and the only thing that works is the power button, but I can't even turn it off because I can't select switch off.

It works fine if I take the battery out and run off the adaptor but kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

MacBook Pro :: Finding Recommendations For Powered USB Hub?

Jul 31, 2009

I've been trying to find a good, solid powered-USB hub to use with my Macbook Pro. I tried the Belkin 7-port, which had good reviews, but it just stopped working after 2 weeks, and it was never powering self-powered USB hard drives properly (even though it was supposed to).

So I'd like some recommendations for a good USB hub that has sufficient power to use with self-powered USB hard drives and that won't slow down or stop working when i connect too many devices.

MacBook Pro :: Leave Secondary HDD Powered Off Until I Need It?

Apr 25, 2012

Like many others, I'm thinking of replacing my HDD with an SSD and replacing my optical drive with the original HDD. I plan on using the SSD as my boot volume and the HDD for storage. Part of the reason I am switching to an SSD is that I carry my laptop around quite a lot and don't feel confident that the HDD won't fail because of all the motion.

My question is: Can I leave the HDD powered off until I want to use it? Thus saving battery life and reducing the risk of HDD failure from being moved around too much. I would like to be able to mount the drive when I want to access the storage and unmount it when it is not in use. Is this possible?
