MacBook Pro :: Difference In Using A Portable External Hdd And A Regular External Hdd?
Sep 10, 2010
Besides the obvious fact that one is portable and the other is not. Does the portable one have an increased chance of failing due to it being moved around a lot more?If not, then why don't everyone just get a portable external hdd to back up their data?Just curious as I look into getting a hdd soon to back up my data using time machine.

I've had a LaCie Porsche Design for the last 6 years with no problems but with the upgrade to a MBP I'm looking to get a new portable hard drive (LaCie or another brand). My old LaCie was FW400 so I'd be looking at FW800 now. Which make and model do you use and are you happy with it's performance?

I have a MacBook Pro (just got it this year) and I need a portable external hard drive. I also want to use it on my PC. Which interface would you suggest? I am not sure which connections my PC has but I know it has USB 3.0. Is there an interface on my MacBook that's faster than USB 3.0? If so, I might forget about connecting it to my PC, assuming it's significantly faster.

I want to move my photos from my laptop to an external hard drive. I already own a Seagate which is formatted for a PC, with photos already on it. I do not want to lose those photos and have been told by Apple tech that the seagate can be reformatted for mac. How do I do this without losing the PC photos already on it. Is there any difference between photos transferred from a PC or a MAC ?

I have a seagate 320 gb external hard drive(with usb). Currently I am using a hackintosh and I will switch to Mac in a month. In my external HDD I have 200gb of pictures-movies-tv shows-documents. It is formatted with NTFS so I use it with Macfuse and NTFS 3G. When I get a macbook pro 15" i5 with 320gb hdd I will transfer all 200gb to my MBP, format the HDD to Mac os journaled instead of ntfs and use the hard drive for time machine.
After that I will still have some space. I want to use that space for carrying around documents for example to carry my presentation with me to the school. Can I use it like that? Also computers at school uses Windows, can windows read and write Mac OS Journaled format? Additional quick question: In windows if HDD is full pc gets slower, do macs get slower when hard drive is near full?

Is it possible to convert the backups.backupdb folder on an external HD I've been using for Time Machine into a regular folder? Or to otherwise move around and delete files within the backups.backupdb folder on the Time Machine HD? My old Macbook Pro was stolen and I got a new MacBook Air. I had full Time Machine backups of my MacBook Pro on an external HD. I restored the majority of the data to my new Air, but I want to leave my iTunes music on the external HD in a separate folder or partition. Unfortunately, to do this, I need to move (rather than copy) the Music folder. I can't seem to move folders around on the HD; instead, I get a message saying "The operation cannot be completed because backup items cannot be modified." I've seen a few solutions but they haven't seemed to work--I tried something in Terminal, logging in as a root user, etc. Note that I cannot enter Time Machine to turn off backups for the Music folder, because the Music folder that was being backed up was on the stolen computer.

Since not all Portable External Drives are Mac compatible, I need to ask for your advise, Any 250gb or 320gb will be ok, of course something high quality, and compact as well.

i'm about 9gb into my 200gb backup, and its been going 3.5 hours. i always knew this first one would take forever, i should have bought the firewire version i knew it.
anyway, does anyone know if i can still access my shiny new Western Digital drive as a regular external hard drive now i've set it for time machine?
i'll only be able to find out around wednesday next week at this rate.
this is obviously how i roll at work over three different servers/drives. i'm just wondering if time machine kills its ability to be a plug and play storage facility.

Would a USB bus-powered portable external hard drive (Like the WD Passport) be slower at backing up than an AC powered desktop external hard drive? I've got a desktop external hard drive that I'm using for Time Machine backups over WiFi connected to an airport extreme, but it's dieing and I'd like to replace it. Preferably I'd like to get a 1gb portable drive so I can use it for both backing up and travelling - however if it will result in slower speeds in transferring data then I'll just get a desktop drive.

I have a 15' macbook pro 250 gb HD 2 gb mem. And in the activity monitor it is showing space utilized 228.53 gb and free space at 4.04 gb? And I have only had the laptop for less than 2 years now, Is this normal? Is there a way to erase items so I have alot more free space? I also have an portable external hard 320 gb I use to back up my hard drive. Will this save my music and important items so I can erase items (music, etc.) off of hard drive? then when i need those items just plug the portable hard drive in? I really need my music for I am a DJ.

personally I thought that the family pack was for if you had 2+ Macs to install Snow Leopard on. I didn't really care for upgrading my mac mini so i just bought the regular Snow Leopard for my Macbook Pro. Out of curiosity i tried installing SL on both and it worked.
So what are the differences between the regular Snow Leopard and the family pack?

This may sound like a stupid question so my apologies if it is but I have been searching the internet to try to find a definitive answer and cannot find a simple one that I understand. Basically my question is if I want to have some extra storage on my network and want to plug in an external hard drive into my router does it have to be a network drive or will any external hard drive that I use to plug in directly to my mac work?

I can't figure out the difference between these two hard drives, they look identical but Amazon says the latter one is the "newer" version, are they the same thing?
Which is the better buy? Also, Is it recommended I get a Mac formatted external drive? Does it do it automatically when I plug it in or is it easier to get a mac formatted drive?

Corsair "CT" series (certified) vs. "CM" series (regular)
Kingston "KTA" series (certified) vs. "KVR" series (regular)
I can't find any vendor that carries the certified Mac compatible series where I'm from (and shipping from the US will wipe out any savings vs online apple store). Has anyone tried using the Kingston KVR1066D3S7 with their uMBP?

So I made a previous post regarding whether the RAM issues in the Unibody MacBook have been resolved or not: [URL]
It seems that most people who bought OCZ ram have had no issues what so ever. I am located in Canada so a store like CanadaComputers is great for me because I can go pick it up instead of having it delivered and pay shipping costs (as opposed to Newegg.ca). On their website, they have two modules with similar specs expect one is found in the Apple ram section and the other is in the regular ram.
Apple Ram (OCZ)[URL]
Regular Ram (OCZ)[URL]
When comparing the specs, the only difference I can see is that the CL on the Apple ram is 7-7-7-20. The CL on the regular ram is CL 8-8-8-27.
The price difference between the two is $57! OCZ's website confirms that one is made specifically for Apple Notebooks and the other is just regular.
Can anyone explain what CL is and whether it is something that needs to be taken into consideration.

I notice that to upgrade the HDD from Apple is expensiva & many has posted picture on how they use a putty knife & replace them with a better & bigger capacity HDD.
I was wondering, for those not comfortable opening up the Mac Mini, what is the difference if we just buy a USB external HDD ? Wouldn't it be the same

I am looking to connect my macbook pro to an Acer G24 monitor, but am not sure what best way to do it.The resolution of the monitor is 1920x1200, and it is a 24" screen, with VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports. My macbook pro is the late 2011 entry model.
Will there be a difference in the quality of the picture on my external monitor, depending on whether I connect using a HDMI cable or a DVI cable? I will have to buy an adapter for each of these, to plug into the mini DVI port on my mac, will this alter the quality of the picture at all? If I were to buy an Apple Tv, would I be able to plug it straight into my monitor using a HDMI cable? If so, how would I manage the audio, as my monitor does not have speakers. Would using a thunderbolt cable (with HDMI adaptor) increase the quality of the picture of my monitor?

A few months ago I bought the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive adapter. I was going to purchase my first laptop and knew there would be drives I could take from my G4. This was my first real experience with USB 2.0 and boy do I hate it. I do mostly video editing and I very regularly transfer huge amounts of data from drive to drive. USB 2.0 waaaaay too slow compared to what I was used to. Hours to transfer 40Gbs. I now regret not getting a FireWire enclosure. How does everyone feel about those HDD docks that take SATA drives? To me it seems very economical. I understand a smaller bus powered drive would be good for travel because a dock or larger drive needs a power source.

i'm hoping someone can help me out on this little problemmy usual set up is a pair of speakers connected with jacks via an m-audio usb audio interface, with an external monitor connected via mini-dvi to dvi.now for some reason my audio interface has randomly broken (on a side note, could a power cut have somehow broken a usb peripheral connected to my macbook whilst it was asleep?) so i've hooked up my speakers to the line out to rca. Now for some reason, when i plug the mini dvi connector into my macbook i get an incredible amount of hum. not just a little, alot!

In other words... I have moved my music library to the external hard drive, as per an earlier thread I read here on the forums. It worked like quite well. Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? If so, how?

I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 Core Duo, and I'm wanting to install 10.6, but about a year ago, I cracked my screen to the point that I cannot make anything out on it, and haven't replaced it. Instead, I have just been using it in clamshell mode, which has worked out fine so far. My problem is that I cannot get the 10.6 install to show up on my external monitor.
I searched around, and could only find one other similar thread that just ended with the author putting it in clamshell and having it work fine. When I boot to the install and close the screen, I just get a grey box on my external display with a black bar on either side of it. I can't seem to find any other resources, so I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wasn't sure whether to put this post it iTunes (since all my music is played in iTunes) or in Mac Lion.I purchased a new external HD because my old one is about to fail. However, the old one is working fine right now. I have both HD's plugged in to my laptop. I am trying to transfer the music files from one to the other. But the copying gets stuck, and after several minutes, says one of the over 1,000 songs has an error and the copying is stopped. Without choosing a few songs at a time and copying that way, and then removing the file the error message shows, which will take a long time, is there any work around for this?
