I've been surfing the web for hours now to find the right SSD for me. I have an ExpressCard SSD which unfortunately is having too many problems so I am planning on buying the MCE OptiBay to replace the SuperDrive with a second hard drive.
So my intention is to buy a cheap/small SSD to install OS X on it and to keep the home folder on the internal drive. There seem to be two SSDs which fit into that category. I need some advice whether those two products even work on my MacBook Pro Early 2008 2,4GHz, or if there are any other incompatibilities & problems.So the two candidates are Intel X25-V 40GB or OCZ Vertex 30GB.
The OCZ offers less space and costs slightly more but neither of them are really significant as they are in my price range. The OCZ ("Read: Up to 230 MB/s & Write: Up to 135 MB/s") seems to be much faster then the Intel one ("Read: up to 170MB/s & Write: up to 35MB/s"). Especially the writing speed of the Intel X25-V is really poor, even when compared to normal HDDs.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy G5 iMac is getting a new harddrive, meanwhile I had to fire up my older front, slotload IMac (G3), it has 10.3.9 installed and 250GB external harddrive. Unfortunately, this little iMac only has 30GB on board memory. After the 10.3.9 install/upgrade I only had 4GB of available memory. I have looked through just about every file/folder to delete duplicate/unnecessary files but cannot find what has used up the memory. I have a LaCie 250GB external drive, partitioned in three sections at 78GB each; can I install OS X on one of the partitions and work from that for my Photoshop, Illustrator and other graphics software projects?
A few minutes ago a message came up saying that my memory is close getting full and should clear some files to make room. This iMac (slotload) is only rated for 512MB RAM max at 133-333 speed, two 256MB boards (max). Is there a way to get around this and add more RAM, a way to boost it to768MB RAM or even 1GB RAM and still have the system work and utilize the extra memory? Do I need the adapter to run a mirror monitor on the slotload (a 17" flat panel, mac compatible, ViewSonic brand. I have the software to set up the mirror)?
I was partitioning my Disk using BootCamp while trying to install Windows 7 on my MacBook (30GB partition) but my partitioning never ended. The stupid BootCamp got stuck so after one hour I had to turn off my MacBook. I even listened if the HD was working but nothing... The shut down was inevitable.
So I turned on my MacBook again and all seemed fine. That was until I checked my HD capacity! My HD was 30GB less than what I should normally have. Instead of 60GB FREE space I know had 30GB. So I thought that ok, BootCamp must have managed to make the partition even if the MacBook crashed and burned.
No, it hadn't. My 30GB have vanished! I also went to disk utility and used Partition to see if there was any space there but nothing. Disk Utility see my HD as a 250GB disk which is correct. Somehow that 30GB has been recognized as a big chunk of info on my HD so now I am missing 30GB.
My itunes says i have 100gb of music, but when I look in Finder it says i have 130gb. I have no movies or TV shows in my itunes. I need to find and delete the extra 30gb as my hard drive is full.

My Time Machine backup takes up to 6 hours to do a backup of about 30GB. And each backup size is 31.5GB everytime !!
I have the following Config - 80 GB for OSX (53GB Free) and 40 GB (10GB Free) for Win 7 on Bootcamp. Sometimes I wonder if TM making a backup of Win 7 also everytime. (Does it mean - In a way its good, that means I should be able to restore the entire hard disk from TM including Applications, Win 7 , bootcamp and all the programmes installed in Win 7 in case I have a problem ?)
But the speed should still be fast... 6 hours to do a 32GB backup is torturous specially because then I have to leave the machine alone and cannot use it.
I have a 298.1 GB external Western Digital hard drive connected to my iMac by a USB 2.0 cable. It is formatted in NTFS-3G so I can use it with both my PC and Mac. Yesterday in Disk Utility I created a 50GB 256-bit encrypted DMG and told Disk Utility to save it on a folder in my external drive. It got to about 20GB and then my house's power went out. A few hours later when the power came back on, I turned on my computer, and the available space on my external hard drive went down from about 100GB to 68.21GB.
The first thing I thought was that the DMG transfer ended prematurely so I should just find and delete the incomplete DMG from the hard drive. So I went to the folder I saved it in and it was not there. I checked all the folders and I couldn't find any DMG in there. Then I went to the root of the external drive and used Get Info to find the space each folder took up. It adds up to 194.12 GB. So I subtracted 194.12 from 298.1 and got 103.98. If I'm supposed to have 103.98 GB, why do I only have 68.21 GB available? I double and triple checked the size of everything on the disk and I still should have about 30GB more than I do. The 30GB just disappeared.

Just bought a second internal Hard Drive for my Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 machine. Simply for storage, so no system apps are going to run off it. I've researched enough, can't seem to find an answer in writing. Hopefully this is a simple question to answer...
Basically the HDD is a Seagate Baracuda SATA drive. You know how the old IDE drives came with a jumper pin that you can switch from Master to Slave? Well, it appears SATA drives have an option of 1.5GB/s or 3GB/s instead. (News to me! A personal first internal SATA install!) I certainly know what that means, just curious if I want the jumper capping my speed at 1.5GB/s on this specific older Mac model or if I should simply open it up to 3GB/s.
For the time being, I've left it capped at 1.5GB/s. It makes sense that the system BUS would be the definitive capper of HDD throughput...such is why I'm asking if there's any benefit of opening it up, or leaving it capped.
Just wanted to find out if you guys delete any of your apps you don't use. For me I don't use GarageBand and Chess etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had FCP open and I was 'log and transferring' a bunch of footage from P2 cards to my RAID. While that was busy working I was surfing the web in FF and listening to tunes via itunes. I had itunes mini player open. I wanted to see more info about a song and tried hitting the green button to maximize. Nothing happened. So I try command+tab but I get a 'bonk' sound and I don't switch apps. I though it was odd that even when I clicked on itunes the menu bar still said firefox.
Next I did the good 'ol command+option+esc to see if itunes was 'not responding'. this is what I see: Odd... no apps appear here even though I had 3 open not including Finder. So I go to my dock and click on finder and I get this dialog box:
So I tried going up to the Apple icon and chose shutdown. I clicked OK and waited and the machine never shut down. I had to to a hard shutdown. Upon restarting all is right with the world again. It's just weird that I have never run into anything like this in all this time and this new machine as been working perfectly since the day I got it.
I've been experiencing some weird problems on my Mac Pro for the last few days. It's a Xeon quad 2.8, 6GB memory and running 10.5.6, never had any problems with it before. So the problems I'm having is that some system applications becomes unresponsive (freeze and fun beach ball spinning). In most cases I'm not able to force quit the frozen apps either. Also, in the dock it says "Application Not Responding" when I right click on them (like it should), but when I check the "Force Quit Applications" window there is no such text (there should be some red text after the application name if I'm not mistaken).
These are the apps that has frozen the last few days: System preferences, Disk Utility, System Profiler, Software Update, the main menu has also frozen at times.
When I try to shut down the Mac Pro it quits all the applications as usual, but then just stops and shows the wallpaper and nothing else (so I have to use the power button on Mac Pro itself to completely shut it down. When I want to put my Mac to sleep it takes way longer than usual as well. Today after I had been away for a while I came back to see the screen saver active, but in my Energy settings I've set it to shut down the displays before the screen saver would activate � so I have no idea why the screen saver was on...
I have locked my System Preferences (with the little lock in the lower left) but when I click on the lock it just says "Authorizing..." next to it and System Preferences freezes (no password window pops up).
I'm lost. I can't for the life of me figure out what could be wrong. I've used Repaired Permissions without any luck. (There was some error messages, but now I can't even open up Disk Utility again without it freezing directly at start up.)
All I can think about is that something I've installed would have messed something up, not sure. The last days I've installed: Grammarian Pro X (trial), iWork '09 (retail) and Handbreak. (and I've updated other software like Adium, but I doubt that's the problem)
Time Machine starts to restore iTunes and then says I don't have sufficient privalages and quits restore. I am the sole user of this computer.

I had some computer issues the other day that ended up requiring an erase/install of 10.5. So I reinstalled and when asked if I wanted to transfer data told it to use a Time Machine backup. I then ran Software Update to get all the updates. What I noticed was in my Applications folder only the standard set of Apple apps were there. No iLife apps, Adobe CS, etc were migrated over. I'm in the process of testing copying iPhoto from the backup. Is there a reason non-Apple apps are excluded from migration? I understand some installers, Adobe in particular, places files elsewhere in the system that might not be migrated properly. Also my Downloads folder is non-existent too and will need use TM again on it.

Will I also loose all my other Apps and installed software like MS Office, Adobe CS6, etc. etc.? If so, how can I do a system recovery without losing all my current apps or programs. in the past I was able to add files to apps on the iPad (who offered that option) via the Apps tab on the device and then selecting "add files". The apps menu has disappeared from iTunes 12, so is there still a way for me to load documents into the app via iTunes? Or did Apple just break the ability to move files and out of apps on iOS?

I turned off and then on the laptop and to my surprise, the Mac partition doesn't show up on bootcamp menu, and I'm taken directly to Windows.I tried booting from the install disk and repairing the disk with Disk Utility, and although all my data seems to be all right (I can see all of it from Windows), and Disk Utility did not find any errors, when I reboot (while holding the option key) only Windows shows up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI removed the whole mess of them today, and I've noticed ~700 MB freed up and many of the apps (Mail especially, which had nearly 200 MB of these nib files) are down very close to their sizes in SL. And they are snappier to launch. Well worth doing even if you don't really need disk space (I didn't; was just slimming things down a bit).

I placed the folder on my desktop and the problem is that, now I can't delete these copied files. When i try to delete them Mac asks for a admin password, I type the password but nothing happens the files haven't moved. I have set permission to read & write for all users. What could be the problem here? Is it that files on my old PC wher NTFS, but i copied them to mac OS X.

I have and old iBook 14" G4 that will not boot. I'm trying to transfer files and apps to a MBP. I've pulled the HD and have it connected to my MBP using an external HD adapter. I tried using Migration Assistant to move the data but the only choice I have is to move the profile and not the rest of the data. Does anyone have a suggestion for a workaround?

I recently got bit when I moved some files to the trash, checked to make sure that nothing was broken, and then took out the trash. Turned out some applications were still using the files while they were in the trash. Is there a way, either in terminal or finder, to leave the files in the trash but make it so no apps can see them? It would be nice if this was the normal behavior.
