MacBook :: 13'' Alumunium - What Is The Sound I Am Hearing?

Sep 12, 2009

I sit with my 08' alum-ubody 13'' macbook on my lap very often. when I maneuver myself into a new position, my macbook always maneuver with me. but i've been hearing a unique sound that it makes if I tilt it too steeply. this sound closely resembles the same sound a flourecent light makes when it turns on. --ting!-- just a few decibels louder than a pindrop.

MacBook Pro :: Audio POP Before Hearing Actual Sound / System Sounds Not Working Fine

Mar 31, 2009

Here is whats happening: my 3 y.o. 15 MBP is connected to external speakers (Bose MusicMonitor) and every time there is a sound, any system sound, say an email in, a volume chirp, or a Skype chirp, anything at all, I hear an audible POP, before hearing the actual sound, in fact the POP sort of overlays the sound. I hear the second POP sometimes, after the sound has sounded, so to speak, and sometimes the second one does not happen at all. To me it reminds me of the Pioneer Amp my dad used to have in the 70's, when you first turn that thing on, it would produce an audible POP. So, back to to this, it sounds like an amplifier POP by being awaken by the system, and I'm inclined to think it is the MBP's audio "amplifier" on its board. Oh, btw, both the speakers and the MBP's volume is set to low.

MacBook :: Not Hearing The Noise When I Empty Trash?

Apr 14, 2010

This may sound dumb, but my laptop is no longer making the noises when I drag items into the trash, empty the trash, etc. I can hear my iTunes and videos. I'm not sure what's going on? All the options are checked in "Sounds," so I'm pretty sure that's not it. Anyone know how to get the sounds back? Or why they stopped in the first place?

Mac Mini :: Should I Be Hearing The Fan When Web Browsing?

Oct 26, 2008

I've just picked up a brand new C2D 2.0GHz 2GB mini. Yup, too impatient to wait for the refresh, whenever that might be.I had expected this little thing to be quieter than it is. It's not that it's loud exactly (except when I play 720p video, at which point it becomes a bit of a screamer), but should I be hearing the fan when all I'm doing is browsing the web?For example, all I have running right now is Finder and Firefox (with the Macrumors forums thread editor in a single tab) and I can hear the whir and grind of the fan (which actually seems uncertain about just how fast it wants to run).

PowerPC :: 12" G4 Won't Boot - Hearing Click Noise

Dec 5, 2007

I posted this awhile back, but didn't find a solution. Anyway, my 12" PowerBook G4 is back from the shop, where, I found out, they haven't worked on it for three weeks or so (it's been there two months!) It still will not boot. The battery charges, and when I press the power button, I can hear the "click" noise that means it's trying to start. I can never hear the HD spin all of the way up. It sounds like it tries and then fails. Nothing ever appears on the screen... ever. I have to do a hard shut down, and then it sounds like the HD spins down. For awhile, it did the "double dinging" noise, but I don't know what that means... and couldn't find anything on [URL:...]about it.

IMac :: Loud Hard Drive Hearing From Apple

I'm expecting the entire catastrophe...cracked glass, flickering, yellow fever, and a loud hard drive.

OS X Yosemite :: Why Hearing Loud Foreign Voice Periodically On IMac

Dec 9, 2014

Very infrequently a loud foreign voice will be heard on my iMac speaker system.  I havent been able to really document it properly as it doesnt last that long and as indicated very infrequent--I believe I have only heard it twice, maybe 3 times in the last month.

It would appear to be within the computer system and not from any local transmissions.  It seems to only last 5 or 10 seconds if I recall correctly.

I am concerned that it may be some type of hacking or something that has been put on/in the iMac.  I believe it occurred while using Firefox.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Design Flaw In 'Play Stereo Audio As Mono' Of Universal Access Hearing-tab?

Apr 7, 2012

The option to 'play stereo audio as mono' that comes with OSX 10.6 does not work as I expected. When I enable this option it sounds like only one of the two channels becomes mono, while the other one does not sound mono to me.It's hard to notice this, because the total sound does change to 'less' stereo. I've done some testing with different soundcards and testing signals, and found out that when the option is enabled, the mono signals are routed incorrect. While the right channel becomes mono, the left channel seems to be something else; I'm not sure if it's the original left channel of the stereo signal, though. I have reason to believe that the resulting mono sound on the right channel correctly is the 'monofied original sound', but that from the left channel. The resulting mono sound on the left channel sounds like the original left channel of the stereo sound, maybe added with the mono sound of the right channel.

Why do I think so? When using a sound card with more than two outputs, I can clearly see that sound is being sent to the second and the THIRD output, instead of the first and the second output, immediately after I enable mono. Resulting in output on THREE channels:original leftmonofied (left) monofied (right) On my soundcard I can disable the extra outputs, and than I hear:original left + maybe monofied rightmonofied (left) I think the programmer of this great feature made an 'off-by-one error', consequently sending the monified output to the wrong channels;to channel[1] + channel[2] instead of channel[0] + channel[1] I don't know what happens to sound that is sent to channel[2] (the third channel) on a two channel soundcard. It could be mapped to the the first channel, but that of course is speculation. Could be tested though, with the right audio signal.

MacBook Pro :: Sound Output Device Stuck On Headphones - Other Sound Related Options ?

Dec 13, 2009

This started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.

Every time I look up "hard drive click" I get the SMS triggered "tink" but this notebook is not in motion and instead makes a "ca-chink".

MacBook Pro :: Unibodeis Making Creaking Sound / Sound While Opening Lid

Aug 12, 2006

For some odd reason, I have been experiencing some creaking when I move the display of my Unibody 15.5" Macbook Pro. At all. It just is very annoying, as it has a distinct plastiky sound to it, and it was not there to begin with. I don't know if this matters, but I have a Speck clear case that I used, but then I took it off because it seemed to be twisting the display a bit. Is this creaking a known issue with the Unibodies, or is it just because of the Speck case? I have never dropped my computer, and it has never been mistreated. It just leads its life on my desk or in my laptop bag. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro :: Trackpad Making Squeaking Sound / Sound Comes When I Depress Trackpad

Every time I depress my trackpad (the one built into my MBP 15" mid 2009) It is doing a slight squeak...Now I'm meticulous about how well I keep my beloved MBP... but I do use it everyday for many things (Including design, word processing, accounts, pwning the microsoft network at my office)

But I am guessing that these things are built to last... and shouldn't have an effect on how much I have used it right... Should I take it to Apple and let them have a look at it is there a quick thing that I can do to mend it? Or should I just get over it and accept it as quirk of it's character?

I.e. is there some USB extension or sound jack item that I can buy, which will improve sound performance, and plug the speakers into that?

Software :: Sound Not Coming Properly / Sound Changes Automatically From Normal To High

Feb 9, 2009

I just bought an iMac 24" 2.8Ghz Dual Core, 2Gb RAM, 320 HDD. This nice iMac has been with me only 2 days and the problems already started. I don't know why when I play a song either in iTunes or in web(audio streaming) the audio suddenly changes. It's as if you applied an EQ and removed all the low frecuencies and after a few seconds the sounds returned just as normal. When this "auto EQ" happens, the sound becomes "brighter" (I hope you understand what I am trying to say) but just as I said, after a few seconds, the sound is played normaly. I am running Mac OS X v 10.5.2.

PowerPC :: Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz - Sound Card Needed For 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers?

Jul 24, 2008

I'm pretty new here, though I posted over a year ago here with a few questions as a beginning switcher. My switch completed in Christmas of 2005 with a late '05 Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I decided to get another monitor and it is a Sony 19" LCD one. I also didn't get any speakers since I used headphones a lot at the time. I recently decided to start using speakers. So temporarily, I am using the Altec Lansing BX1120 2.0 Stereo speakers from Walmart for only $15. They sound great but I would like 5.1 surround sound to watch my DVDs (and to soon upgrade to BluRay & SACD/DVD-A; but that's for another thread later on). Before I go on, I would like to ask questions and provide facts with what my 'puter has. My specific products I'm looking for is at the bottom of this message.

OS X :: Speakers Unable To Handle High Pitched Sound / Sound Gets Quite

May 1, 2008

I have a 24" aluminum iMac G5. I have never had a problem with sound before, and feel like this problem is isolated to a certain DVD but the DVD works on EVERY other player I own. Everything pretty much plays DVDs, so that's many!

So here's my problem: There's parts of this movie that have very high pitched sounds, like electronic sounds that are just sound effects in the movie. Whenever I get to those parts in this movie (maybe even other movies for all I know, I don't play many) and the sound goes quiet, like the speakers can't handle that high pitched sound.

I feel there must be something I can do about it, right? I just use the regular default DVD player application that pops up when I put a DVD in. I tried playing with that equalizer but nothing changed. Any ideas...?
