Jul 11, 2009

Particularly when music stops - there's hissing/crackling and also clicking!!i looked in the help file and it says i need to select "headphones" in the sound preferences window - but it's not giving me the option (the only option is built in audio - internal speakers)

MacBook Pro :: Audio POP Before Hearing Actual Sound / System Sounds Not Working Fine

Mar 31, 2009

Here is whats happening: my 3 y.o. 15 MBP is connected to external speakers (Bose MusicMonitor) and every time there is a sound, any system sound, say an email in, a volume chirp, or a Skype chirp, anything at all, I hear an audible POP, before hearing the actual sound, in fact the POP sort of overlays the sound. I hear the second POP sometimes, after the sound has sounded, so to speak, and sometimes the second one does not happen at all. To me it reminds me of the Pioneer Amp my dad used to have in the 70's, when you first turn that thing on, it would produce an audible POP. So, back to to this, it sounds like an amplifier POP by being awaken by the system, and I'm inclined to think it is the MBP's audio "amplifier" on its board. Oh, btw, both the speakers and the MBP's volume is set to low.

Power Mac G5 :: Connection Cable For Linking HiFi To G4

Nov 19, 2007

I have searched high and low to find a simple adaptor connection cable to link my Hi Fi to the G4 so that I can record my favorite old LP's and cassettes into iTunes and burn them onto CD with Toast 7 once cleaned up. A wireless unit that works in reverse to the iPod to Hi Fi would be ideal. If I had the technical expertise to design one, assuming not already available somewhere, I would patent this rather than having to have cable traveling from room to room.

The longer the cable the greater the audio loss, if you believe the cable manufacturers. Some of the music I want to record is just not available on CD whether original LPs or in compilations. One artist in particular, Annabel Lamb, I have requested the iTunes Store to incorporate several times with no response. Even the technical Q and A on Roxio's site does not help. Roxannes great the way she tracks the pointer though.

Hardware :: HiFi System - Simple Speaker Upgrade For Mac

Jan 14, 2009

I was looking to do a simple speaker upgrade for my mac, and somewhere along the line it turned into me building an entry level hifi system.I have decided on the B&W 685 speakers and Rotel equipment. Keeping in mind that this is for a medium sized bedroom:

1. Is the difference between using an integrated amp versus a pre-amp and power amp setup that different considering the extra cost?
For the integrated setup I was looking at: Rotel RA-1062
For the pre/power amp setup: Rotel RC-1070 and Rotel RB-1072

2. How would playing an Apple Lossless file from the aux port on my powerbook compare to playing the actual cd from a quality player? I was looking at the Rotel RCD-1072 CD player.

3. I need cable recommendations. I want to bi-wire the speakers, connect my laptop to the amp, and possibly connect a CD player to the amp. I don't want to spend more than $200 on cables.

Mac Mini :: Should I Be Hearing The Fan When Web Browsing?

Oct 26, 2008

I've just picked up a brand new C2D 2.0GHz 2GB mini. Yup, too impatient to wait for the refresh, whenever that might be.I had expected this little thing to be quieter than it is. It's not that it's loud exactly (except when I play 720p video, at which point it becomes a bit of a screamer), but should I be hearing the fan when all I'm doing is browsing the web?For example, all I have running right now is Finder and Firefox (with the Macrumors forums thread editor in a single tab) and I can hear the whir and grind of the fan (which actually seems uncertain about just how fast it wants to run).

PowerPC :: 12" G4 Won't Boot - Hearing Click Noise

Dec 5, 2007

I posted this awhile back, but didn't find a solution. Anyway, my 12" PowerBook G4 is back from the shop, where, I found out, they haven't worked on it for three weeks or so (it's been there two months!) It still will not boot. The battery charges, and when I press the power button, I can hear the "click" noise that means it's trying to start. I can never hear the HD spin all of the way up. It sounds like it tries and then fails. Nothing ever appears on the screen... ever. I have to do a hard shut down, and then it sounds like the HD spins down. For awhile, it did the "double dinging" noise, but I don't know what that means... and couldn't find anything on [URL:...]about it.

OS X Yosemite :: Why Hearing Loud Foreign Voice Periodically On IMac

Dec 9, 2014

Very infrequently a loud foreign voice will be heard on my iMac speaker system.  I havent been able to really document it properly as it doesnt last that long and as indicated very infrequent--I believe I have only heard it twice, maybe 3 times in the last month.

It would appear to be within the computer system and not from any local transmissions.  It seems to only last 5 or 10 seconds if I recall correctly.

I am concerned that it may be some type of hacking or something that has been put on/in the iMac.  I believe it occurred while using Firefox.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Design Flaw In 'Play Stereo Audio As Mono' Of Universal Access Hearing-tab?

Apr 7, 2012

The option to 'play stereo audio as mono' that comes with OSX 10.6 does not work as I expected. When I enable this option it sounds like only one of the two channels becomes mono, while the other one does not sound mono to me.It's hard to notice this, because the total sound does change to 'less' stereo. I've done some testing with different soundcards and testing signals, and found out that when the option is enabled, the mono signals are routed incorrect. While the right channel becomes mono, the left channel seems to be something else; I'm not sure if it's the original left channel of the stereo signal, though. I have reason to believe that the resulting mono sound on the right channel correctly is the 'monofied original sound', but that from the left channel. The resulting mono sound on the left channel sounds like the original left channel of the stereo sound, maybe added with the mono sound of the right channel.

Why do I think so? When using a sound card with more than two outputs, I can clearly see that sound is being sent to the second and the THIRD output, instead of the first and the second output, immediately after I enable mono. Resulting in output on THREE channels:original leftmonofied (left) monofied (right) On my soundcard I can disable the extra outputs, and than I hear:original left + maybe monofied rightmonofied (left) I think the programmer of this great feature made an 'off-by-one error', consequently sending the monified output to the wrong channels;to channel[1] + channel[2] instead of channel[0] + channel[1] I don't know what happens to sound that is sent to channel[2] (the third channel) on a two channel soundcard. It could be mapped to the the first channel, but that of course is speculation. Could be tested though, with the right audio signal.

Intel Mac :: Audio Keeps Going To External Sound On It?

Mar 17, 2012

My iMac switches from internal audio output to external when I log in after computer wakes up from sleep mode.  It also does it when I "shut down" under apple menu and physically turn on via the power button on back.  My quick fix is to go under audio settings and manually switch audio output back to internal speakers. I don't understand why it's switching on it's own. Could another program be switching the audio output, maybe iTunes?

MacBook Pro :: Very Little Sound From External Speakers?

Speakers work with other devices but not so much with MacBook Pro.  In iTunes, the volumn slider is maxed out with the speaker volumn on the keyboard maxed out too.  Used to blast out the house, but not now.

Don't know if it's as a result of the upgrade or not.  I did a PRAM reset but still nothing.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External ISight Has No Sound?

May 2, 2012

I recently purchased an original external iSight camera, and while the video works fine, the built-in microphone isn't picking up any audio at all. I've tested it in the Sound preference pane, iMovie, iChat, Skype, and Photo Booth -- nothing, no audio at all when I select it as the default audio input device.

I've read that older iSights don't work in FaceTime, but I'm getting zero audio input. Is this a Lion thing or should I assume there's a mic problem?

As a side note, I also tested it on a MacBook Pro running 10.6 with no better luck.

Hardware :: Getting ITunes Only To External Sound Card Possible?

Dec 9, 2010

I've recently bought a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 and am really enjoying it. When I'm not using it for recording, I keep it connected to my speakers as it gives a better output than that of the 3.5mm headphone jack (for an aux in to my speakers). I was just wondering if there was any way that I could get only iTunes out of the external sound card so that all my sounds from other apps like Mail and Safari etc. Would come through my Macbook Pro's speakers? I just don't like it when I get the big air rush sound coming through my speakers when an email is sent using Mail, and then other little bleeps from everything else are quite annoying too. I have attached an image of how my sound is currently configured using the Audio MIDI setup.

MacBook Pro :: Whats The Best External Usb Sound Card For Mac?

Dec 5, 2009

I have a macbook pro, 2.4ghz intel and recently picked up logitech's x540 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I know need a good external usb sound card to push the 5.1 surround sound to its fullest

I've been looking around and two caught my attention so far. The Griffin Firewave (which has been discontinued) and the Creative Labs SB1090 USB Sound Blaster X-Fi.

The griffin seems to be fully compatible, but I occasionally game on my windows xp bootcamp parition.. and have read that it is not compatible with windows.

The creative one however is, but of course we all know creative labs doesnt realize that there are actually other OS systems out there other than Windows. Ive searched and found that people were able to get it to work on their macs, others havnt..

I need a definite answer

Or if anyone can recommend another one that I didnt mention.
