Mac Mini :: Using A 2GHz MacBook Pro As HTPC - Facing Some Major Heat Threds?

Dec 2, 2008

I'm using a 2GHz MacBook Pro as a HTPC, but it has developed some major heat issues and is not much longer for this world. I have read some threads regarding overheating issues with Minis and wonder if that is still an issue? I want to replace the laptop with a Mini and don't want to run into the same problems.

Mac Mini :: Mac Mini As HTPC: Keyboard Sound Controls Don't Work?

Jan 10, 2010

I have my Mini hooked up through a usb/minidisplayport to HDMI adapter. On my keyboard when I push mute or volume up or down, the computer shows the mute/vol up/vol down icon on the screen when I push it and it makes the volume sound, but it does not actually mute the tv or make the volume go up or down. Only the actual TV controls will make it work.

Mac Mini :: Great Alternative To HTPC

Aug 28, 2009

[URL] I just found out about these. Looks interesting, and fairly cheap too. The specs are fairly low, but they are absolutely quiet, smaller than the Mac Mini, and still does what it was made to do... basic web browsing, HD video streaming, maybe a music server, etc. basic stuff. And it is fairly cheap, too. Just thought you guys might want to know about something cool I found on the intronet.

Mac Mini :: Work As ITunes Media Server - HTPC - Wake On LAN?

May 3, 2009

I'm thinking of getting a Mac Mini as an HTPC and for holding my iTunes library and AVI's. I currently have an upscaling DVD player that also has a USB socket for DivX stuff and would like access to my iTunes library also. I was thinking of simply adding an AppleTV to the set-up but I've been considering a Mini also. My questions are:

1) If I have a Mini in the living room with all my AVI's and iTunes stuff on it- can I Wake-On LAN it using a Mac laptop, my iMac or an AppleTV in another room to access my library if it's sleeping? If I wanna watch a movie in bed on an AppleTV I don't want to have to nip downstairs to wake my Mini 'cause it's power-saving.
2) Would a Mini work well as an iTunes media server? Not bothered about accessing it from the internet, just want access through wired and wi-fi within the house.
3) Could I control the Mini remotely from the iMac or laptop over the network to save connecting a keyboard/mouse to it? For example if I need to perform a software update or move some files? I can do that over the network with another Mac, right? Sort of remote desktop?
4) Could I control the Mini, purely for playback, from Remote on an iPod Touch?
5) Is there a hack/fix/workaround to add AVI's (DivX and xVid) to Front Row? I understand these wouldn't be playable on the AppleTV.

I've tried searching for individual answers to the above but it's a bit confusing. I'm not sure of the difference between Back To Mac or Apple Remote Desktop. And I'm not sure about the WOL stuff either.

Mac Mini :: Music Production - Deal With Heat Under Stress?

Sep 11, 2010

I'm eyeing the mini right now because os x >>> windows for music (inherent midi drivers instead of 3rd party, stability, etc etc).amittedly I currently run a hackintosh on a previously windows pc. It is stable with the exception of gfx crashes every few hours and its inability to use the gfx card to its full extent. This gets to me though and is kind of a bitch. So I'm thinking about getting a mini when I have the money for one. I would get the standard with the 4gb ram option. How well does it deal with heat under stress? and is the HDD 7200 rpm for the non server edition?(edit: roarrrr just read that its 5400, so lame)

1) Have my 'TV' screen hooked up via DVI for movies off the external HD

2) Have my 'External Monitor' hooked up via DVI/HDMI for everyday computer use?

My TV isn't that close to my MBP, so I can get an extended DVI cable for it.

The only way I can see to do this is to duplicate the file and crop one copy to the left page and the other to the right. Of course, combining the files would be a tedious process.

Is there an easier way? I have Preview 4, Acrobat 8 and PDF Pen.

Mac Pro :: Using Mac Pro As Work Computer And HTPC?

Mar 8, 2009

I ordered a new Mac Pro 2.66 octo with a single video card (GT 120). I also ordered a mini for use a a HTPC in my living room.I have a TV in my bedroom too (where my Mac Pro is going to be placed). I was wondering if there's a way to "partition" the display of my Mac Pro so that when I'm at my desk, it functions as a regular computer, and also be able to use it for Front Row, Plex etc with an apple remote. I'll can attach an IR receiver to my Mac Pro. I'd like this to be setup so that the two modes do not interfere with each other and effectively function independently. Is such a setup possible with a second video card?I idea is the share my media between the mini and mac pro so that I have access to the Front row etc from both rooms.

MacBook Pro :: CS Major Considering For Couple Models

May 22, 2010

Back in February, I purchased the (at the time) base mode 15" MacBook Pro, which I shouldn't have returned (idiot). I spec whored and went for the Sony VPCF115FM/B, with i7 which has proven to be a catastrophic and horrendous piece of machinery.

It is coming in from its second round of repairs (still will have poor screen, battery life, and dismal 900MHz throttling when on battery). I am looking to get a Mac to replace it, and I've come down to a few options.

1) Get the baseline 13" model with hopefully the new BTS deal.
2) Get the mid line MBP from last generation refurbished for $1529 (2.66, 9600 320GB 4GB).
3. Get the low-end 15" from this gen with the BTS deal (required for me to afford it), and sell the iPod/Printer.

Do I need the power and screen resolution (size doesn't matter to me) or would the cheaper 13" cover me?

OS X :: Major Problem: Macbook Pro Not Loading, Can't Find Fix?

Nov 6, 2008

Story: I took my mac out of sleep and found that the trackpad was not functioning. After a little time, I decided just to reboot. I hit the power button and then hit restart, but it could not restart because for some reason, Skype was not closing. Finally, I just decided to force restart by holding power button. I turned computer back on, and it was stuck on the gray loading screen. I waited about 20 minutes and then turned it off.

I've reset PRAM, repaired permissions/disk (from Leopard disk). I finally got past the login screen and got on my desktop. When I clicked on the airport on menu bar, I noticed another problem; Airport Card not installed. I rebooted again, reset PRAM, and found I was back in the same situation again; stuck on loading. I checked system profiler and it recognized my airport card, so that is not dead. I decided to finally archive and reinstall OSX. Now I've been stuck on the "about 10 minute" mark for about an hour now. Thinking of just quitting install and trying to reboot again.

MacBook Pro :: Finding Major Difference Between 256 And 512 MB Of Graphics RAM?

Jul 23, 2009

I just have a quick question. I'm ordering a Macbook Pro this weekend and saw that one had a little beefier 512 MB of RAM instead of 256 dedicated for the graphics card.

I really hope Starcraft 2 isn't too graphic intensive and that the 256 would be enough to handle it. That's really the only game I plan on buying to play on here.

MacBook Pro :: Major Drop In Video Performance With 128 GB SSD

Aug 23, 2009

I've had my brand new 13" MBP with 128GB SSD for a month or so and love it. However in the last day, performance has dropped dramatically while watching video. I was on Hulu watching a high-res show, and about 15 minutes in, it started getting very choppy -- audio was OK, but video performance dropped. I quit, restarted, tried again, same problem immediately. System load was around 2.79. I tried in both Safari and Firefox, no dice. YouTube seems to have dropped now as well (I'm playing a video in another tab now, and again the audio is great but the video is choppy). I'm currently hooked up to a 22" LCD through the DVI output (the laptop itself is closed).

Is this normal? I mean I've got 4GB of RAM and 2.53GHz CPU with a solid-state disk! There should be 0 latency and this dual-core beast should tear through video no problem, and here I am closing off iTunes and other apps to try to spare some CPU (this doesn't work though). I've even switched to standard-res for both hulu and youtube but it's not much better. I am shocked that a brand new 2.53GHz CPU with 4GB can't handle this. I also installed and am now running Hulu Desktop to try to get better performance. The really weird thing is a week ago I was a on a flight chewing through YouTube while on Skype and using Entourage and iTunes all at the same time, and it was blazing fast. Now I'm crawling along like an old 1.6GHz with 512MB RAM. WTF, mate?

MacBook :: Upgrade HDD & RAM 3.1 SR 2.2Ghz

Oct 31, 2010

This gets asked a million times on a daily basis I expect, so sorry about that! I've read the upgrade section which is very helpful but I was looking for some recommendations / advice on what HDD&RAM upgrades to buy. I was looking at a seagate momentus (ST9500420ASG) 500GB, 7200 but when I googled the model number, the first thing that came up was a post on the seagate forums regarding incompatibility with the Mac due to the fact this hard drive has a free fall sensor which apparently conflicts with the built in sudden motion sensor. Anyone have any experience on that? I need a drive that will run at 7200rpm so this checked all the boxes for the price but could be out now? I have read the SR 3,1 will take 4GB of ram so I was just looking at the dual 2GB corsair value pack (VS4GSDSKIT667D2).

Mac Pro :: Major 2008 RAM ECC Types?

Aug 16, 2008

After much research on the interweb I've finally realized I've lost the plot, so time to ask the experts....

I've just bought some Kingston KTA-MP800K2/4G RAM from here. The website says it's non-ECC yet the same product from here says it is ECC. This "yes it is/no it isn't" repeated throughout my searches. I bought my Mac with 4x1Gb of Apple's RAM which I'm guessing is ECC(?).

These are my questions:
1. Does anyone know what the correct ECC status is for this product (the Kingston website was no use at all!)

2. I'm reading that it is you shouldn't mix ECC types but what are the consequences of doing so?

3. Is there any software tool to run that can check if my installed RAM is ECC or not, or check everything is happy and compatible?

4. Am I being pointlessly paranoid!?

I do a lot of motion graphics and 3d work so it's important to me everything is tuned up and working as smoothly as possible.

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 17 Vs Macbook C2D 2Ghz

Quick question guys, I currently have a Powerbook G4 17 inch with 1.5 Ghz, 2GB of RAM and 80HD. I love it, with the full powered RAM it flies, but, I HATE ITS SIZE, i mean its not that portable. I have at home a Mac Pro so the power im looking for i have it on that machine. I wanna try and change my Powerbook before the new ones arrive because i need PORTABILITY. Is it really a big of a difference? I mean i dont need the "power" of the powerbook because i have the macpro at home. With 2 GB of RAM, will a macbook (lets say the current ones) be really faster and more efficient than my old PB G4? I like the 17 screen but i need portability so bad! what do you guys recommend?

OS X :: Major Bug With Rules In Apple Mail

Nov 15, 2010

There is a bug when it comes to rules in Mail in 10.6.4 and 10.6.5 (and possibly earlier versions of Mail as well).

Here are the steps to reproduce the bug:

1. Make sure you have an IMAP account in Mail.

2. In your IMAP account's Mailbox Behaviors, UNCHECK the box that says "Store draft messages on server". This ensures that your draft messages will be saved locally on your Mac instead of on your IMAP server.

3. Create one new rule that would ALWAYS be true of ANY new message that you would be creating in mail, such as:
"From contains (your email address)"
OR
"Sender is a member of group (name of a group that your own card is a part of)"
Don't create both of those rules... just choose one.

4. The action that the rule should perform is:
"Set Color of text (choose a color)"
Make sure that you're NOT setting a BACKGROUND color, but rather that you're setting a TEXT color.

5. Save the rule.

6. Now, create a new message and start typing.

7. Save the message as a draft once.

8. Notice that the message shows up in your Drafts folder with the text color applied that you set in #4 above. This actually is a small bug right there, because rules shouldn't apply to messages in your drafts folder, but this first bug is not a big deal.

9. Continue editing the message.

10. Save the message as a draft for a 2nd time.

11. This is where the major bug takes place.... after you've saved your draft for the 2nd time. Look in your Drafts folder. Your message has now shown up in the list of Drafts message with the BACKGROUND COLOR of the subject changed to the TEXT COLOR that you set in #4, which makes the message unreadable if you had chosen a dark text color. Even though you specified a TEXT color, Mail incorrectly applied a BACKGROUND color to the message. This is completely annoying if you're working on a bunch of drafts, because you can't even read the names of the drafts that you're working on without individually opening them up.

OS X :: How To Use Major Studio Names In IMovie 11

Oct 22, 2010

After some sneaking around in iMovie 11's files, it was rather easy to allow you to use major studio names in iMovie 11 when Apple doesn't allow you to do it. I wrote a blog post about it with how to do it and with pictures. You can find it here [URL]. First you need to locate the TrailerStrings.strings file within iMovie. The location of it is here Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/TrailerStrings.strings. Before you open it up change the permissions of that file so it will allow you to save it once your done.

Once you did that open it up in your favorite text editor, don't use Xcode because some reason it won't allow you to save it once your done. Find the line that says "replacementString = "-;". Change the "-" to whatever studio you want to use, I used Universal, so change it to "Universal". Save it and go into iMovie (if you have it open when you edit the file, close iMovie and reopen it to see the change) and it works! If you want to use another studio name you must change it in the file. Note: Don't try to change "-" to "" and remove the dashes, it will crash iMovie because it will be expecting a string to. compare.

Mac Pro :: Not Dedicating Enough CPU Power To Major Apps?

I noticed that when the file is being rendered the computer will stay at an idle 82% with cpu....well ****.  I need that power to get on the rodeo.

MacBook Pro :: Using 2.2Ghz - Starts, But Then Only Kernel Panics?

Dec 11, 2010

I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook Pro 15" (2007) that suddenly can't get past the startup screen and ends up with a kernel panic and the You need to restart message. Happens 100% of the time now. I had Leopard on it when it started kernel panicking. I managed to boot from an external drive and installed Snow Leopard, but it started okay once or twice, then started having the kernel panics at startup again. Tried SMC reset, but no go.

I then tried going back to Tiger, thinking it might be a problem with the RAM. Tiger actually installed okay, and after it worked okay for a bit (2-3 times, maybe half an hour), I tried to install Leopard again. And got only kernel panics. And I can't install Tiger now either.

It occasionally starts up from an external disk that I use for installs (has Leopard and Snow Leopard on it), but that's not 100%. And I can't even get thru an install now. I started up with it in Firewire Disk mode, wiped the drive and cloned a system from my iMac, but even though it seemed to go okay, when I shut it all down and tried to restart the Macbook Pro, I got another kernel panic. Any ideas? I've switched 3-4 different RAM modules, and I don't think they're ALL bad. But no go. I've changed hard drives too.

Seems weird. I mean, it doesn't seem broken, as it starts up, goes thru the startup screen, seems to pause a bit and, instead of going to login, stops with a kernel panic. I assume it's HARDWARE, not software. But hardware problems are usually the RAM, sometimes the hard disk; and if the MBPro doesn't start up at all, then the logic board is probably fried. So what else can cause these kernel panics? A bad keyboard/trackpad (top case)? Bad PRAM battery?

OS X :: 2ghz Unibody Macbook - Incomprehensible RAM Usage

Mar 2, 2009

I've been trying to keep track of how my 2ghz unibody Macbook uses its RAM, and I've been curious as to why after some time it reports that I have as little as 30 MB of free RAM left. It obviously reports that the rest is in use, but the numbers just don't add up to 1.9GB of used up RAM. What is my computer doing that is not being reported, and how do I get it to stop? It has made my machine noticeably slower. I've posted a screen shot to illustrate. It may help to know that I had been a Windows user for years. In Windows we can launch msconfig.exe to manage which programs get to run in the background and at start up, and from there we could decide to shut down programs that check, for example, for RealPlayer updates and other completely unnecessary executables. Can someone give me a run down of what I can safely eliminate from my processes in my Macbook, and therefore keep more RAM free at all times?
