OS X :: Mail Application - Major Memory Hog?

Nov 19, 2009

It's on the top of my list right now. I tried closing it and restarting it and it still have a high memory count. It's higher then my firefox which has 30 tabs opened. Anyone know of it's designed this way? or I have too many RSS feeds? I only have 5 RSS with 1 Gmail IMAP account on it.

OS X :: Major Bug With Rules In Apple Mail

Nov 15, 2010

There is a bug when it comes to rules in Mail in 10.6.4 and 10.6.5 (and possibly earlier versions of Mail as well).

Here are the steps to reproduce the bug:

1. Make sure you have an IMAP account in Mail.

2. In your IMAP account's Mailbox Behaviors, UNCHECK the box that says "Store draft messages on server". This ensures that your draft messages will be saved locally on your Mac instead of on your IMAP server.

3. Create one new rule that would ALWAYS be true of ANY new message that you would be creating in mail, such as:
"From contains (your email address)"
OR
"Sender is a member of group (name of a group that your own card is a part of)"
Don't create both of those rules... just choose one.

4. The action that the rule should perform is:
"Set Color of text (choose a color)"
Make sure that you're NOT setting a BACKGROUND color, but rather that you're setting a TEXT color.

5. Save the rule.

6. Now, create a new message and start typing.

7. Save the message as a draft once.

8. Notice that the message shows up in your Drafts folder with the text color applied that you set in #4 above. This actually is a small bug right there, because rules shouldn't apply to messages in your drafts folder, but this first bug is not a big deal.

9. Continue editing the message.

10. Save the message as a draft for a 2nd time.

11. This is where the major bug takes place.... after you've saved your draft for the 2nd time. Look in your Drafts folder. Your message has now shown up in the list of Drafts message with the BACKGROUND COLOR of the subject changed to the TEXT COLOR that you set in #4, which makes the message unreadable if you had chosen a dark text color. Even though you specified a TEXT color, Mail incorrectly applied a BACKGROUND color to the message. This is completely annoying if you're working on a bunch of drafts, because you can't even read the names of the drafts that you're working on without individually opening them up.

OS X :: Adding Memory And Then Running The Memory Utility Application?

Mar 21, 2009

I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3

One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.

Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?

Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app

How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

OS X :: No More Space Available For Application Memory

Oct 31, 2008

MBP Penryn Late 2008 2GB RAM 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I'm getting the following popup from time to time: Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. Then, it pauses the app that uses the most memory (Safari) and shows a window where I can pause and resume applications, or force quit. Strange thing is, I still have 4GB left on my HD, and my memory bar is only 2/3 filled.

Mac Mini :: Running Out Of Application Memory?

Apr 24, 2012

I have had terrible problems with my Mac Mini. Apple has replaced the hard drive twice, the SATA cable once and the optical drive once in the first year I've had it. After the latest installation of Lion, I have had repeated problems with the error "Your Mac OS x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." This is false -- I have less than half of my 500 GB in use and 4 GB of wired memory.

I believe that Safari is always running when I get this error. Also, I cannot cleanly quit Safari -- I always must force quit, b/c it hangs when I quit. The last time I got this message, Safari was using 1.26 GB of memory.

My System Memory report is all out of whack:

VM size: 221.25 GB
Page ins: 1.59 GB
Page outs: 40.15 GB
Swap used: 59 GB

This is after only 1 or 2 days of uptime. I have just a couple of weeks left on my Apple Care and am desperate to know if this is hardware problem requiring my 5th trip to the Genius Bar or if this some kind of software problem that I can fix.

On this latest Lion install, I did a clean install with no settings or applications, and I killed extensions on Safari.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Keep Application In Memory When Quitting

Feb 26, 2012

When I click on the red cross button of Safari to stop it, the window vanishes. But the application remains in memory, so when I click again Safari shows up immediately. This is the normal behavior, iPhoto doesn't. I mean the lightening dot under the icon in the dock disappears. So is there a way to have iPhoto behave like Safari? I upgraded memory of my MBP and there is space enough to keep iPhoto and others in memory.

OS X Mavericks :: Runs Out Of Application Memory During Sleep

Aug 27, 2014

Shortly after updating:

Safari (to 7.0.6)

Java (to version 7 update 67)

Pages (5.2.2, which has "An error has occurred" note in the purchases section of my App Store application)

Keynote (6.2.2)

Numbers (also has "An error has occurred" note in the "Purchases section" of my App Store application, and while it shows "installed" in same section, Numbers does not appear on the recently updated list in the "Updates" section)

and iMovie (10.0.5)

I also recall an Adobe update occurring (Macromedia?).

I began experiencing slow wake-from-sleep behavior. More recently, I have been getting "out of application memory" dialogs upon waking from sleep. There have also been a couple instances where the computer would not wake and had to be restarted. At one point, without having gotten the "out of application memory" dialog, I did note that virtual memory had ballooned to over 14 GB. That stayed like that until I logged out and logged back in.

This behavior seems to be specific to a user account (did not repeat when logged in as admin for one overnight test, but haven't tried an all day admin login).

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling BOINC, as well as removing an Adobe Resource Synchronizer app from the user login items (given the recent Adobe update, and having read that said item could cause trouble).

So, I'm not sure how to proceed beyond offering the reports below:

OS X Yosemite :: Error / System Has Run Out Of Application Memory

Dec 3, 2014

My MacBook air keeps slowing down and giving me the error message "Your system has run out of application memory".  I end up having to force quit all applications and reboot, which fixes the problem for 10 - 15 minutes and then it starts over again.

I am on the road for work and won't be able to get to an Apple store until next week, but this is creating a gigantic headache for me.  I found a bunch of threads on this same topic for Snow Leapord, but nothing pertaining to Yosemite.

MacBook Air :: Why To Keep Getting Error Message - Run Out Of Application Memory

Sep 5, 2014

I brought a 13" Macbook air late 2013 model in December last year. It has 4GB Ram and a 120GB Storage.I have a 160GB portable hard-drive which I store all my files on (Music, pictures etc) so this leads me to this question. Why do I keep getting the error message "Run out of application memory".That message pops up when I use Chrome (Only program running!!!!!!!!!! other than Finder) even if I have one page open??

It's also popped up before when no programs are running and causes the MacBook to freeze up resulting in me having to turn it off via the power button. I have run Disk utility and there appears to be no issues? I Googled the error message and all it brought was up people having problems with the calendar application which I do not use nor is it running?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OS Lion (10.7.3) and in the last two weeks I face the following problem with the Mail application and my Yahoo mail account: although the account appears in the side bar of the application and it will search for new messages when I launch the Mail app, it doesn't load any messages and I also realised that all Mailboxes of the named account are blank! The messages appear normally when I reach my account through the Yahoo page! I tried to remove and re-import the account in the Mail app, but it just worked for two days and now the Mailboxes are blank again! I have no problems with the other two mail accounts I reach through the same application (both POP accounts).

OS X :: Mail Memory Leak OSX 10.5.7 Mail 3.6

Aug 2, 2009

My Mail app is leaking memory at the rate of about 0.8Mb per second. If I leave it running it hogs all my RAM, starts using gigabytes of virtual RAM, slows my system to a crawl and then crashes. I have to open the app to check my mail, and then close it again - which is really irritating. It started after a recent Safari update.

I have SpamSieve on my machine, but the leak still happens when it's disabled. Similarly, I have a MobileMe email account - but it stil leaks when I disable this account. I'm running a MacBook 3.1

Mac Pro :: Major 2008 RAM ECC Types?

Aug 16, 2008

After much research on the interweb I've finally realized I've lost the plot, so time to ask the experts....

I've just bought some Kingston KTA-MP800K2/4G RAM from here. The website says it's non-ECC yet the same product from here says it is ECC. This "yes it is/no it isn't" repeated throughout my searches. I bought my Mac with 4x1Gb of Apple's RAM which I'm guessing is ECC(?).

These are my questions:
1. Does anyone know what the correct ECC status is for this product (the Kingston website was no use at all!)

2. I'm reading that it is you shouldn't mix ECC types but what are the consequences of doing so?

3. Is there any software tool to run that can check if my installed RAM is ECC or not, or check everything is happy and compatible?

4. Am I being pointlessly paranoid!?

I do a lot of motion graphics and 3d work so it's important to me everything is tuned up and working as smoothly as possible.

OS X :: How To Use Major Studio Names In IMovie 11

Oct 22, 2010

After some sneaking around in iMovie 11's files, it was rather easy to allow you to use major studio names in iMovie 11 when Apple doesn't allow you to do it. I wrote a blog post about it with how to do it and with pictures. You can find it here [URL]. First you need to locate the TrailerStrings.strings file within iMovie. The location of it is here Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/TrailerStrings.strings. Before you open it up change the permissions of that file so it will allow you to save it once your done.

Once you did that open it up in your favorite text editor, don't use Xcode because some reason it won't allow you to save it once your done. Find the line that says "replacementString = "-;". Change the "-" to whatever studio you want to use, I used Universal, so change it to "Universal". Save it and go into iMovie (if you have it open when you edit the file, close iMovie and reopen it to see the change) and it works! If you want to use another studio name you must change it in the file. Note: Don't try to change "-" to "" and remove the dashes, it will crash iMovie because it will be expecting a string to. compare.

MacBook Pro :: CS Major Considering For Couple Models

May 22, 2010

Back in February, I purchased the (at the time) base mode 15" MacBook Pro, which I shouldn't have returned (idiot). I spec whored and went for the Sony VPCF115FM/B, with i7 which has proven to be a catastrophic and horrendous piece of machinery.

It is coming in from its second round of repairs (still will have poor screen, battery life, and dismal 900MHz throttling when on battery). I am looking to get a Mac to replace it, and I've come down to a few options.

1) Get the baseline 13" model with hopefully the new BTS deal.
2) Get the mid line MBP from last generation refurbished for $1529 (2.66, 9600 320GB 4GB).
3. Get the low-end 15" from this gen with the BTS deal (required for me to afford it), and sell the iPod/Printer.

Do I need the power and screen resolution (size doesn't matter to me) or would the cheaper 13" cover me?

Mac Pro :: Not Dedicating Enough CPU Power To Major Apps?

OS X :: Major Problem: Macbook Pro Not Loading, Can't Find Fix?

Nov 6, 2008

Story: I took my mac out of sleep and found that the trackpad was not functioning. After a little time, I decided just to reboot. I hit the power button and then hit restart, but it could not restart because for some reason, Skype was not closing. Finally, I just decided to force restart by holding power button. I turned computer back on, and it was stuck on the gray loading screen. I waited about 20 minutes and then turned it off.

I've reset PRAM, repaired permissions/disk (from Leopard disk). I finally got past the login screen and got on my desktop. When I clicked on the airport on menu bar, I noticed another problem; Airport Card not installed. I rebooted again, reset PRAM, and found I was back in the same situation again; stuck on loading. I checked system profiler and it recognized my airport card, so that is not dead. I decided to finally archive and reinstall OSX. Now I've been stuck on the "about 10 minute" mark for about an hour now. Thinking of just quitting install and trying to reboot again.
