View 4 Replies View Relatedjust a quick question. On the new uMBP is there anyway to find the serial number with out booting the machine? On the older styles they use to be under the battery where you removed the screws to get to the ram. All the photos I could find doesn't really show the bottom that well.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a USB to serial converter. I don't know the manufacturer but found something on the internet that looked like it so I downloaded their driver.
Now (I'm new to a Mac) I need to see if it works.
1) Is there a way to display all of the devices in a GUI such that I can identify the com port? (I did "ls /dev" and I see ttys0, etc (about 20 or so))
2) I need to know which tty the converter belongs to. How do I do that?
3) Once I identify it, how do I set the serial parameters?

I recently purchased an upgrade download for windows 7 online. i ended up buying windows 7 professional but now realize it's not eligible for an upgrade from windows vista home basic, only custom install. My question is, if i were to obtain a copy of the windows 7 home upgrade instead of pro, can i use the serial number i purchased for windows 7 professional on a win7 home install, or are they specific to version?

Since I'm newly registered on this Forum I can not deal with on my own. We have about 20 intel- based Xserve (headless). Everything works fine except of serial console - there is no way to connect to it. There are only few random characters displayed on system start and thats all. I've tried all connection settings that are mentioned in Apple documentation (57600 8N1, 9600 8N1 etc.. ) with no success. I'm using ZTerm and PL2303 based USB RS232 adapter- no problem with serial console on sun, cisco, brocade and many more . Connection with older xserve's is also possible. I have to put all machines into production, but I can not do this without reinstalling Mac OS X - Raid 1 on OS slice is required. I can not start OS installation with no graphic card or serial console
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Mini Server with OS X Server. I needed to reformat my disk and reinstall the Server OS. The disk was reformatted ok. Now when reinstalling from the original disks it asks: " enter mac os x server serial number". I do not have the server serial number (I did not know that I should have written it down from the about box before reformatting). I have kept all items that were shipped with the computer but I cannot find the serial number. It is not on the disk sleeves or any documentation that I can find. How do I find (or get a new) os x server serial number?

Mine still says it will appear in 48 hours. and it's been more than that since I purchased it. If everybody is in the same boat, that's OK, but if I am one of the few, I should send an email.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI'm starting my career in networking configuration (basically configuring routers & switches) and need advice on a good serial terminal app. Since Terminal that ships w/ Mac OS X doesn't deal w/ serial ports, I've had to resort to using apps like Zterm & QuickTerm. Both of those haven't been updated in years, and they don't really have a "Mac OS X"-ey GUI goodness about them.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI own Aperture 1.5, legitimate copy, but did not record ser no. Now I am trying to install a v1 to v2.1 upgrade I bought. I need my original ser no to do the install.
I have the original disks, and I have the 1.5 installed on my (now) OS 10.6.2 machine. The 1.5 application won't run on the 10.6 machine.
How to find my serial number for v1.5?
I have a MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,3) and a Via Epia based Gentoo Linux Box (motherboard: MB Jetway J7F4K1G5S A 1500MHz Mini-ITX ) and I would like to be able to administer it using a serial console (if -for example- ssh etc fails) as I don't have a monitor and / or keyboard.
In order to do so, I ordered an USB to Serial DB9 (male) cable from eBay [URL] which uses the PL-2303 chipset. I used the 64bit driver from github to get the cable working on Snow Leopard.
In order to connect the cable to the COM1 port of my Linux box (which is also male), I used a 9 Pin Female Serial RS232 Gender Changer Adapter as seen here: [URL] and I have setup my Gentoo Linux box to enable the console by adding "s0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 115200 ttyS0 vt102" to /etc/inittab and ttyS0 to /etc/ttysecurity.
After reboot (or issuing 'init q') the serial console should work, however I am unable to connect to it from my MacBook Pro.
I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard from scratch, but not before doing a Time Machine Backup just in case.
I did not restore my whole system from time machine because I do not plan on keeping everything I had.
Anyways, I just hooked time machine up and restored some of my old applications. When opening these applications it is asking me for the serial numbers or registrations.
currently using mac mini server for sharing files and folders. Would like to setup VPN to get access to files remotely.

-Mac OS X Server version 10.6.8
I am not sure if this version supports VPN.

I am a web developer using Mac to develop and Ubuntu Server to deploy. It's a pretty standard setup nowadays. The time came to replace my staging server ( which I keep at my home on a dedicated IP ) and I could not resist the allure of the new Mac Mini Server. So I bought one and tried to do a Ubuntu install and thought I could sell my OSX server license as I have no need of it.I imagine a lot of people not used to Apple's policies might think like this. So how did it go? Bad and then good.As far as I have been able to ascertain, it's impossible to install Ubuntu on a Mac Mini Server ( at least without the additional DVD-ROM drive which I refuse to buy ).What's more, the OSX Server license I bought is not transferable to non-Mac Mini Server computers so I can't really sell it anyway.

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI do have a copy of the the Mac Mini SL Client software but I don't have another Mac to create the USB restore disc in order to load the client on the Mini Server via usb drive. I don't intend to use the Server Software and don't want to 'activate' the license so I can resell it instead. Can I just use the Server to create the bootable restore disc without 'activating' the Server License and locking it to my serial number? Or is there another way to create the restore disc if you don't have access to another Mac to run disc utility?
I'm thinking about purchasing a Mac Mini Server instead of an xServe. It will be used to serve client account http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/f...anagement.htmlWe have 3 iMacs and 1 (possibly 2) Macbooks - there will be 6 client accounts. How will the Mini cope if all 4 clients are logged in at the same time?Or should I just purchase an xserve?
View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst, I'm a n00b Mac user but I'm reasonably tech smart and I want to make the jump to OSX. I need a mac for the wife, who will use it in the living room connected to our TV. She does email, light desktop publishing, and a metric ton of movies and music: the iTunes library alone is 300GB. Plus she watches DVDs on it. I was thinking about buying a refurbed mac mini server (It's at a discounted price) but I don't need Snow Leopard Server. I'll add the external superdrive later. How hard would it be to just install regular Snow Leopard instead of Server? Also, in regular Snow Leopard, how would the HDDs show up in OSX? One big 1TB drive or 2 500gb drives?
View 7 Replies View Related One of the drives in our 2009 mac mini server 2009 has died. I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.
Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?
