View 1 Repliesjust a quick question. On the new uMBP is there anyway to find the serial number with out booting the machine? On the older styles they use to be under the battery where you removed the screws to get to the ram. All the photos I could find doesn't really show the bottom that well.

finding RAM serial number?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a USB to serial converter. I don't know the manufacturer but found something on the internet that looked like it so I downloaded their driver.
Now (I'm new to a Mac) I need to see if it works.
1) Is there a way to display all of the devices in a GUI such that I can identify the com port? (I did "ls /dev" and I see ttys0, etc (about 20 or so))
2) I need to know which tty the converter belongs to. How do I do that?
3) Once I identify it, how do I set the serial parameters?

I recently purchased an upgrade download for windows 7 online. i ended up buying windows 7 professional but now realize it's not eligible for an upgrade from windows vista home basic, only custom install. My question is, if i were to obtain a copy of the windows 7 home upgrade instead of pro, can i use the serial number i purchased for windows 7 professional on a win7 home install, or are they specific to version?

View 15 Replies View RelatedI'm starting my career in networking configuration (basically configuring routers & switches) and need advice on a good serial terminal app. Since Terminal that ships w/ Mac OS X doesn't deal w/ serial ports, I've had to resort to using apps like Zterm & QuickTerm. Both of those haven't been updated in years, and they don't really have a "Mac OS X"-ey GUI goodness about them.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI own Aperture 1.5, legitimate copy, but did not record ser no. Now I am trying to install a v1 to v2.1 upgrade I bought. I need my original ser no to do the install.
I have the original disks, and I have the 1.5 installed on my (now) OS 10.6.2 machine. The 1.5 application won't run on the 10.6 machine.
How to find my serial number for v1.5?
I have a MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,3) and a Via Epia based Gentoo Linux Box (motherboard: MB Jetway J7F4K1G5S A 1500MHz Mini-ITX ) and I would like to be able to administer it using a serial console (if -for example- ssh etc fails) as I don't have a monitor and / or keyboard.
In order to do so, I ordered an USB to Serial DB9 (male) cable from eBay [URL] which uses the PL-2303 chipset. I used the 64bit driver from github to get the cable working on Snow Leopard.
In order to connect the cable to the COM1 port of my Linux box (which is also male), I used a 9 Pin Female Serial RS232 Gender Changer Adapter as seen here: [URL] and I have setup my Gentoo Linux box to enable the console by adding "s0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 115200 ttyS0 vt102" to /etc/inittab and ttyS0 to /etc/ttysecurity.
After reboot (or issuing 'init q') the serial console should work, however I am unable to connect to it from my MacBook Pro.
I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard from scratch, but not before doing a Time Machine Backup just in case.
I did not restore my whole system from time machine because I do not plan on keeping everything I had.
Anyways, I just hooked time machine up and restored some of my old applications. When opening these applications it is asking me for the serial numbers or registrations.
Does the logic board serial number match the computer serial number?
My reason for asking is that 4 months ago my sisters G5 17" logic board supposedly got replaced with a new or refurbished logic board but it seems by the workmanship of the board something fishy is going on.
Im totally new to Mac's and have always used Windows based PC's. I work with Cisco kit a lot and often console into them using a serial port on the PC or a USB to Serial adaptor on the laptop. I can then use something like Putty to console to the Cisco kit via the com port assigned to the USB to Seriall adaptor...well Im having trouble getting my USB to Serial adaptor working with my newly purchase MBP (Just had it 2 weeks and still getting to grips with it)
Firstly when I plugged in my USB to Serial adaptor I expected some sort of pop up or activity while the MBP installs it but nothing has come up so maybe this one isnt compatible with the MBP. Secondly Im struggling to find an application that I can use like Putty on the MBP?
Do the macbooks support serial ata 2 hdd or ssd. i was looking into an ssd and most are serial ata.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a SSD but wanted to know if my MacBook (see sig) had a Serial ATA speed of 3 Gigabit or 1.5. The System Profiler says :
Vendor:NVidia
Product:MCP79 AHCI
Link Speed:3 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed:1.5 Gigabit
Description:AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
under Serial-ATA. So I'm not sure if that means the the port is a 3 Gigabit port but the HD is only 1.5. Does that mean the SATA cable is a 1.5 Gigabit speed, and I'd need a new cable, or what? Also if it is 3 Gigabit port that means it's SATA II, right?
Today when I tried to find the serial number of my MacBook in "About This Mac" and System Profiler it says Serial Number System Sal#. I haven't replaced the logic board or had any service done and I'm wondering why it would suddenly disappear like this. My MacBook also has not been "sleeping" when the battery gets low, the computer just shuts off without the low power sleep state it usually goes into around ~1% battery left.

I'm on a Unibody "Collector's Edition" MacBook, btw.
I recently had my MBP taken to the Geek Squad to have the optical drive replaced under the extended warranty through BestBuy (which I didn't know I was getting BestBuy's warranty, not the AppleCare). When I sent it in, they replaced the bottom casing, optical drive, and the logicboard. When I got it back, I noticed that my serial number for my MBP is missing, they didn't enter the number when they replaced the logicboard. Is there a way so I can personally enter my serial number back into my MBP. I figure if I go back to BB, they will send my MBP off to the service center in Kentucky or something.
View 15 Replies View RelatedMy MBP recently had its logic board replaced after it wouldn't power up. Now, seemingly every piece of software that I own needs me to input a serial # to re-register, which is a problem because some won't let me re-register with a serlai that has already been used, and I am missing others....
I think the problem is that the new logic board has a new MAC Address, however I am not sure, and even if that is the problem, I have no idea if/how I can fix the problem.
I just bought a MBP 13 off of CL and was checking the serial # info -- W8029. Does this mean that the MBP I just bought was made this week (week 29)? I'm not sure how this would be possible...
