Jun 12, 2012I have here a mac mini 4,1 that keeps losing it's Ethernet connection. If the mac is shutdown and restarted there is no connection, however, if the mac is shutdown, all the cables pulled from the back and replaced then restarted it boots and the connection is back. It was reporting a very strange mac address starting with 00 which I've never seen before and I also had difficulty connecting to it via ARD as it would show in the scanner but not connect unless specifically connected via IP address. At first I thought it might be a system upgrade as it happen when we upgraded to 10.6.8 since then I've wiped it and installed 10.6.3 and still no luck.Â

Apr 1, 2009it seems loading webpages and downloading a lot of files at the same time, I thought the ethernet would be the fastest but its not.
This is very strange and my wireless on the mini is so much faster in loading webpages (no more inbetween stops) and its just overall faster.
It seems like using ethernet slowed down my mini like it was doing some tedious work to use the mini's ethernet capabilities or something.
Anyone else experiencing this? I've also tweaked with a lot of settings under ethernet, got the right ip address for it with the right port as well.

Aug 21, 2009I have the current generation $599 Mac Mini, with Nvidia graphics (just to clarify the model).
My wireless network is setup from an Airport Express.
My iMac, Powerbook, iPhones, Apple TV, Wii, etc. can all stay connected without problem.
However, my Mac Mini loses the connection constantly. It shows full signal, but then it drops out 100 percent for a few minutes, nonstop all day. It makes it completely useless effectively.
What kind of settings and things could I try to change?
Or, is this likely a hardware issue?

Oct 20, 2008I have a Mac Mini (OS X 10.4.11); internet & email worked fine when I had it hardwired to cable. I've since moved it to the other side of the house and it has problems connecting to the wireless network (linksys router). The wireless network is strong, and my laptop (PC) never has any problem connecting. The Mac, however, sometimes connects no problem and works well for a while, and then just dumps the connection and won't reconnect. I can't figure out what makes that happen. I finally get frustrated and walk away, and an hour later when I walk back it's working again. The signal strength indicator will vary from full signal strength to zero (even though my laptop never has any problem at all connecting). I live at the end of a cul-de-sac with basically no neighbors, so I don't see there being any sort of interference. I stopped by an Apple store today and the best the salesman could do was blame Comcast, my internet service provider.

I'm looking to connect the Mini to my HDMI TV. I've heard of getting an adapter but im not sure which one to get. I've also heard of no audio output in these adapters too. I have a late 2009 Mini but the miniDVI port is being used so the miniDisplayPort is available. Can anyone post a link to a adapter that will work and is under $20.

Apr 22, 2009I got the Aluminum MacBook late 2008 version and as most should know that the macbook comes with a Mini-Display Port. Today i went to buy a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter because all my monitors at home have the DVI slot. I hooked it up and everything works fine as it should be. But next week i have a presentation to do in University and apparently my uni only have the VGA slot available, so therefore i want to know if it would work by hooking up my macbook with the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, then use a DVI-D to VGA adapter and finally a VGA cable to the Projector for the presentation?

Apr 2, 2012I have a Mac mini (~2008) running Snow Leopard. I updated my software today (haven't done this in probably several months) and immediately afterword, my Apple aluminum wired keyboard no longer responds. (The mouse when attached through the keyboard also no longer responds.) However, the keyboard still functions just fine on a separate MacBook Pro that I have, it just won't work on the Mac Mini. (I tried different USB ports with no difference.)
I wasn't smart enough to write down what upgrades actually occurred prior to my last update, but there were only 4 items (I think one was Safari, one was iTunes). If there are no better ideas, I guess I will have to try a system restore from Time Machine which predates my latest bad "update". I'd rather not have to go there if I don't have to.

Aug 18, 2008i have been in the marget for a tv for my bedroom for sometime. and since my monitor for my mini died a few days ago (more like fell down the stairs and blew up ) and i was like yes! another item for my argument to get a tv! lol any who long story short i called walmart and they had a 37" magnavox HD LCD for 400 bux! it was a steal! so of course i took the deal, and excitedly took it home and mounted it on the wall. now i knew it was to good to be true, although it came with a HDMI port, only enough for my xbox, i didnt have a VGA to hook up a computer.
CRAP.
so i was wondering if there is a way i can hook my mini up to the TV without a VGA port, like a converter. i think the only ports left are the composite ones.
i think that there is a way to use the HDMI port but then that would pose the problem of having to unplug my xbox everytime im on the computer, and that would be really annoying.

Mar 11, 2009I've just been into the apple store and after been passed over to the 4th person (due to the other 3 not knowing the answer) I was told the answer to my question , which I am unsure about.
My brother want's to connect his mac mini to his lcd tv. The only connection he has that can be used is HDMI. The mini comes with a Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter, so is it not just a case of buying a cable that has DVI - HDMI, pluging it in the the mini adapter via DVI and then plugging the HDMI in to the LCD TV? And running a separate cable for sound?
A guy in apple said I needed 2 adapters??? Costing double what my brother thought.
I presume this is the cable that comes with the new mini?

Feb 10, 2009I have a Time Capsule wirelessly connected to my iMac. Since I've encountered some problems with backups because of intermittent wifi connection failures, I want to switch to a wired connection with an ethernet cable. I know I could fiddle with the wifi channels etc. but since the TC is just sitting next to my iMac anyway, I could profit from the higher bandwidth of a wired connection as well.Two questions:
1. What exactly do I have to do to make the switch? Are there any new settings I have to apply? Create a new network?
2. Will I still be able to use the wifi connection to get on the internet using my smartphone?

Mac Mini :: Ethernet Port Seems To Have Stopped Working?
Apr 16, 2010I've been having an annoying problem lately. The ethernet port on my Mac Mini seems to have stopped working. It happened when I was switching routers. Most likely I just unplugged it from the old router, and into the new one. After that, no more connection, nothing changes when I plug something in.
As far as troubleshooting goes, I've plugged it into other ports, and into my MacBook Air (Just to get a Self assigned IP) and nothing works. I know these ports work with my other computers. I've reset the SMC and PRAM.It works in bootcamp so this makes me think it's not hardware. Any other suggestions?
PowerPC :: Ethernet Lost When G4 Mini Wakes
May 2, 2010I've been using a G4 mini running 10.4.11 for web surfing, email, and document scanning for about 4 years with few issues. Recently, though, it loses its wired ethernet connection when I wake it from sleep. No ethernet device appears in Network Preferences/Network Status, and Network Utility shows the ethernet connection as "inactive". If I disconnect the ethernet cable for a few seconds and then reconnect it, the ethernet connection reappears in Network Preferences, goes "active" in Network Utility, and functions normally.
Once ethernet reappears, I can wiggle, tug, and disconnect/reconnect the cable and maintain the connection. The cable works normally with another computer. So it doesn't seem to be a hardware connection issue. The network has 2 other wired computers attached with no issues (an old homemade PC and a Mac Pro) and several other devices via both wired and wireless connections. So I don't think it is a router or dhcp issue. I don't recall installing any new software, although I install all Apple updates (including iTunes) when they become available.

Jun 25, 2012I am having the darndest problems with routing on my internal network, specifically with my Mac Mini Server which originally came Snow Leopard Server and was upgraded over the top (no clean metal) wtih Lion and Lion Server (10.7.4) Router is a Cisco/Linksys E4200 with firmware 1.0.04, but have had same problems with 1.0.02 and 1.0.03.Internal LAN/WiFi is defined as 10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0. Router is 10.0.0.1 and gateway. DNS is supposed to be served by the Mac Mini on 10.0.0.7, which also hosts my DHCP server to configure others on my home network.
With WiFi off on the Mac Mini "netstat -rn" returns essentially the same thing as on my Mac Pro (10.7.4 not-server) but for the MacPro at 10.0.0.3. In this condition the Mini will ping the MacPro and I can ssh between, through the ethernet switch on the E4200. The MacPro can ping the E4200 but the Mac Mini can not. The E4200 has some ports opened to forward to the Mac Mini.But, enable WiFi on the Mac Mini and suddenly the ethernet starts working through the E4200.
Sometimes I can change the static IP address on the Mini's ethernet with WiFi off and then it starts speaking to the E4200 and internet. For instance tonight I changed it to 10.0.0.8 and it didn't work. But 10.0.0.6 did. Moved it back to 10.0.0.7 and it still didn't work trough the router but it did work internally Mini to MacPro through the enthernet switch on the E4200.

Sep 12, 2010I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.
I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.
Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.
I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Apr 6, 2009I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.
Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Hardware :: Lacie Mini Disk Ethernet Configuration?
Dec 16, 2009I recently replaced my Netgear router with Apple's Airport Extreme Station. I had the Lacie ethernet mini disk connected to the Netgear ethernet port and it worked just fine.
With Apple's station, however, it just cannot see the mini disk. The green lights on both ends of the ethernet cable port are on. System Pref's Network shows the mini disk not connected or cable unplugged. Fiddling with it one day (mostly on the System Pref side) the disk appeared as an SMB in the Finder (as before) and I was able to access it. But just that one time only. Can't access it since.
Hardware :: Lacie Ethernet Driver VersusMac Mini?
Aug 21, 2007So I just got a new Lacie Ethernet Disk mini that I'll be hooking up to my router. I also have a "spare" Mac mini that I thought about using as a file server. Both would just be connected to the router.
Which do you think would be faster in terms of access speeds? The Mac mini or the Lacie drive?
Ultimately I'll just be storing/accessing things like photos and design files.
