Hardware :: Hard Drive Enclosures That Resembles Mac Pro Desktop?

Jun 4, 2009

I have been searching through the internet looking for a comprehensive list of sorts, but to no avail. Having perused through the various set up threads in the picture gallery, I noticed that many members have external hard drive enclosures that markedly resemble the mac pro desktop. I was interested in purchasing one for myself, but didn't know of very many. Thus far, these are the ones I've got:

Mac Power Pleaides
Macally
Rosewil

I am sure there are many more, especially manufacturers of multi-HD enclosures. I was hoping to get your input to get some ideas of other manufacturers to consider.

MacBook Pro :: Wants To Know 2.5 FW Enclosures Will Pass Thru Bus Power?

Feb 16, 2010

So there's an enclosure that has oxford 934dsp and it has two fw 800 ports on it. I also have an OWC Voyager that has the same chipset and it doesn't pass thru any bus power and this is something that has to be powered by an ac adapter. OWC support told me that this is because of the 934dsp chipset and I'm skeptical of this claim. I suspect that there are enclosures out there than can pass thru bus power over firewire 800 regardless of chipset used.

MacBook Pro :: Can See Hard Disks In USB Enclosures / But Not Internal

May 16, 2012

I have a mid-2010 macbook pro 13". The other day, it crashed on wake-up, and would not boot. I had a OCZ Vertex SSD boot drive, and the OEM hard drive in an optibay enclosure (replaces the optical drive and used only for data). I used this setup for one year with no problems. After much troubleshooting, I found that I could see the SSD drive by booting into a recovery partition that I have on a USB stick, and putting the SSD in a USB enclosure. Then disk utility could see it, but not mount it. The label on the boot partition was "lion", but it changed to "disk1s2". I was able to repair the drive using disk utility, and then boot from it using the USB enclosure.Once booted, I could still see the OEM hard drive with no problems. So I powered down and put the SSD back inside the case and rebooted. It booted in safe mode, but it booted fine. The next time I rebooted, it would not boot. I swapped the OEM drive and the SSD drive, and then the sytem booted with no problems and I was able to use both drives.

One day later, I noticed my OEM drive was no longer mounted in OSX. I took it out, put it in a USB enclosure, and OSX could see it fine. There were no errors on the disk. I put it back in the macbook and reboot but OSX couldn't see it.So, the primary SATA port seems to be working intermittently. Three times now, a drive has stopped working on this port. Each time, I could use the drive in an external enclosure (or using the other SATA port normally used for the optical drive. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it just be the cable?I'm trying to make this computer last at least another month or so because I need to upgrade to a larger model, and am holding out for the 2012 release.

Hardware :: FW800 Enclosures (no Hard Disk) For IMac

May 20, 2010

So I am well on the way towards my 27" iMac. I have just finished transferring my files, work, backups and media from ext4 hard disks to hfs+ (via a combo of an OSX VM for disk util, and removing journaling/file-copying/re-enabling Journaling under ubuntu and the VM.

This has me left with 1.5TB and 2TB HFS+ disks and my old dual bay USB enclosure (an Icy Box). I now need to start looking for a good FW enclosure/s to home these two drives. I have had a look about and the Icy Dock dual bay (supporting raid and also JBOD - important for this) looks like a winner (waiting on techies to answer me about putting drives with data on them in the enclosure in JBOD as I dont want to lose data).

Are there any other options (most of the posts relate to single drive and/or supplied with disk enclosures). I really want something that is FW800 and lets me drop two disks in and just use them.

I may put up a wanted to see if someone has unused enclosures for sale (perhaps where they have removed the disks and put them in their shiny Mac Pro?)

Power Mac G5 :: Initializing New Hard Drive

Oct 29, 2007

My original "home" hard drive in my G5 died and I'm in the process of attempting to replace it, and I figured I would install Leopard as long as I was at it.I purchased a 500GB Maxtor MaXLine Pro Enterprise 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA I/II 3.0G hard drive and installed it, no problem. However, when attempting to install Leopard, the installation DVD doesn't see it as a volume.I'm thinking I have to initialize my new hard drive first, but since I have no other internal drive available (the old one is dead), I can't launch Disk Utility to do this.I have Tech Tools Pro, but it doesn't appear to come with a tool to initialize a drive.

I tried booting up using the AppleCare CD to see if that had a tool on it, but the computer wouldn't boot up with it (although it did boot up with Tech Tools Pro).Is there another tool I need to be able to boot up from the CD-ROM and perform an initialization on my new hard drive?

Power Mac G5 :: New Hard Drive Not Found ?

Nov 6, 2007

I got a powermac G5 Quadcore with 1 internal harddrive. I wanted to replace the drive + add a second drive and then install Leopard on two ultra fast drives preferable in raid0 if possible.

But when I add the second drive Disk Util can't find the drive. I tried swaping the drives and it's always the hd sitting in the bottom tray that can't be found and not a specific harddrive. Therefore I'm thinking it's the motherboard / power supply, sata power cable or sata data cable. I tried to swap the sata data cable did not help anything. I tried just having 1 hd in the computer in the bottom slot still not possible to find the drive, therefore I'm thinking it's not a powersupply problem but I might be wrong.

Anything I could have forgot to check or do with the new drives to make it visiable?

I tried to install Leopard on the drive I could se (after trying for a day to find both hd's from the installer disk util to make the raid) - but it did not help anything in Leopard I still can't se the second drive.

Sata = no jumpers right?
Could filesystem on the new drives have anything to say?
Anything else?

I'm affraid it looks like I need to have the computer to service to have it fixed for something that never worked appraently and I don't have warrenty anymore

Power Mac G5 :: Stuck Hard Drive In G5

About 2 years ago, I added a hard drive in the second hard drive compartment. I would like to replace it with a recently purchased 1 TB SATA hard drive that is desperately needed, but the hard drive in the second compartment will NOT budge whatsoever. I've tried wiggling the hard drive side to side for hours, bloody scratched up hands, screwdriver method Apple suggests, chop sticks that another reader suggested, even a string with a knot to no avail. I don't have rubber clamps as one reader suggested. Does anyone else have any other suggestions besides going to a store and paying them to remove it?

Power Mac G5 :: Different OS On Secondary Hard Drive?

Nov 29, 2007

Have successfully installed a Seagate Barracuda 160GB internal HD (2nd HD) and it's icon is mounted on the desktop. I used Disc Utility to format the drive (Mac OS Extended-Journal), but was unable to install Tiger because of a faulty install DVD (I think). I tried the Panther install DVD's that came with the G5, but am unable to open the the first DVD of that set either (get the grey screen with no wheel, with strange color lines).

More importantly, the drive somehow has a complete duplicate of my other drive. Everything! Also, it updates with things that that I download or add to my Panther drive. How is this, if I did an erase and format using Utility? I'd like to use this 2nd HD as a backup HD (if I can ever get an install DVD to open). Why doesn't the 2nd HD show in the Start up Disc Window? How do I successfully erase it and format this 2nd HD? How would I run a different OS on this 2nd HD?

Power Mac G5 :: External Hard Drive Not Recognized

They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.
