I'm looking for an external HD drive for my Mini mac.
I've read on the forums that the iomega minimax is too loud.
Are there any other options that fit (design) with the mini mac and that will be really quiet?
Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display..no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini.

Have a MDD that always needs the surge protector shut off then back on to start it.I had installed a Western Digital 750GB drive in it.It has Tiger on it with all of my docs and pictures etc.Have been scared of using the MDD and bought an Early 2009 Mini to replace it.The mini only has a 120GB drive (and 4GB RAM) and I don't want it to get filled up.It had Leopard and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard.Some of my Tiger software can't be upgraded to SL, so I'd need to use the MDD drive to access it.Can the HD be used as an external drive and booted from the Mini with Firewire in order to use Tiger? Currently, I'm using a USB drive with the Mini to save docs and pics on, but it's getting to be a pain because some stuff isn't on it and have to change USB drives.
As others have said, the Mini blows the doors off the MDD!I maxed out the MDD to 2GB of RAM and thought it was fast. The Mini's runs circles around it!
I have a new Mac Mini with 2 external drives inuse. One I have no problem writing to or copying files to, the other (TUMI Data Vault - 00 GB) won't allow it....any ideas why? Do I have to format it?

Just got the WD MyBook 2TB. It's not the one specifically for Mac. It says it is compatible, needs to reformat. How easy is it to reformat? It is for Time Machine.

We have a Mac Mini which is our media player. I have all the actual media on an external USB drive. The previous drive was failing, so I've now copied everything over to the new drive. The new drive has the same name as the old drive: Media Drive. As far as the Mac Mini itself goes, all is well.
However, we also access the media drive through filesharing from our other Macs. Now with the new drive, it doesn't appear in filesharing. So I went into filesharing. I removed the old Media Drive (it said it couldn't locate it, because of course it's gone). Then I added the new Media Drive. Still it doesn't appear in filesharing.

I own a Mac Mini and am considering a LaCie 1TB external drive, model number 301304U. It's the one designed by Neil Poulton, is a sleek black box with a blue light on the bottom. It has a USB 2.0 input and an on/off switch in the back. I'd like to know which manufacturer really made the drive inside the LaCie box. I know LaCie uses different manufacturers, but I can't find out any information anywhere about which manufacturer's drive is inside this model, or other LaCie models in general. I guess the same can be said for many other hard drive companies. Heck, even Apple uses Hitachi. That's what came inside the Mac Mini (a 120GB drive), though I now have a 320GB drive inside.

The CD/DVD died just three weeks after warranty expired and Apple said (in essence) 'tough crap...you didn't buy AppleCare'.I have functioned without a CD/DVD drive since then, and everything was fine... until a week or two ago. We installed an update in iTunes, and everything started running S...L...O...W... So, we rebooted the computer! Instead of rebooting, it made the "bong!" sound and then a screen with an apple and a spinning wheel runs indefinitely. We let it run all night the first time and it stays on that screen for as long as you let it.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am going to remove the Superdrive from my 2009 mini and replace it with a second HD as detailed by ifixit [URL] I will then run OS X from the X-25M SSD and the second drive will be a 320Gb Scorpio Black which I will run XP in boot camp from ( have to use additional internal drive to boot XP from since the X25-M currently will not work with XP and I cant get XP to boot from an external drive...). This leaves my setup without a way to work with optical media so I was looking to get an external usb drive and plug it in whenever I would need to install something from a dvd, or burn a cd etcetera.
Instead of throwing away the removed superdrive though and buy another drive, how about recycling it as an external usb superdrive? I would connect it via usb with a Deltaco sata to usb adapter I have. Anyone see a reason why this would not work? Has this been done before?
So my new Mini 2.23 arrived today and I'm trying to think of how I'm going to go about restoring the data from the old Mini. I've sold my old Mini, but used SuperDuper to backup to external drive. I have a MBP I can use if necessary.

I picked up a mac mac mini and it will be performing nearly all the same functions as the G4, including file serving and being the Time Machine source.
Question. Today, I have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a FW400 WD hard drive. Time Machine backs up that data to another WD FW 400 hard drive.
Moving to the mini, I'll have to make the external drives USB2. No big deal.
But purely from a set up perspective... Am I better off keeping things as is, keeping the files on an external drive and backup up to an external drive? Or should I put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on the mini hard drive? Just looking for perhaps the best setup, etc.
First I wanted to upgrade my new mac mini with a Momentus XT but now I'm thinking about getting a "real" ssd + a FW800 drive for storage to have the huge speed boost of the ssd drive. Does anybody have this combination in his mini? What I want to know: How is the performance like of the external drive connected to FW800? Is it comparable to a standard internal hard drive?

Was thinking of installing a 320 gig 7200 drive in it but they are about the same price point as an external 1 TB 7200 3.5 drive. Is it possible to just run the mini off the external drive via firewire or USB2? Would that be slower than using the internal drive?

My G5 2.5 has sprung a leak and is now kaput (no parts, no one can service). What I's like to do is pull the drive with some legacy stuff I need (Quickbooks and years of business stuff) and boot a new mac mini or imac from this drive. I've given up waiting for a new desktop and they are priced out of this word.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new Mac mini and Seagate goflex 3TB external hard drive. The computer is awesome but if I have the external hard drive plugged in, it messes with the restart/shutdown. The mac will act like it's powering down and go to the blank white screen but will never turn off and shows the little gray lines that go in that circular motion at the bottom of the screen. If I disconnect the USB from the Mac then it completes its power down. I've tried the suggestions of repairing disks or disk permissions, as well as resetting the PRAM, which have worked sometimes but the the problem reoccurs. I've also tried ejecting the external hard drive before shutting down on the Mac but I'll either get an error message or nothing happens and then the above shutdown issue occurs.
Why does this happen and what can I do so that I can always have the external plugged in and not have to manually unplug it so the Mac can shutdown?

I am looking to get an external HDD for a modified mac mini. I am thinking of removing the 120gb std hdd in the mini and replacing this with a SSD, coupled with 4GB of RAM to speed things up (will be 2.26ghz). Im guessing the capacity of this will be aroung 60-80 gb and will only be used for the OS.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is in regards to the 2010 mini. I have been reading up on SSD, Hybrids and FW800 with a 7200. What is the easiest AND most effective/cost effective solution? If I went he FW800 route, can I use the same drive as my data storage drive? Will there be enough headroom to run the OS over FW and use the drive to stream movies playing in another room on Apple TV2 simultaneously? Will this give me a performance increase over the internal 5400 if I use the external 7200 for everything over FW800?
That is where my thoughts about the hybrid come into play. I know I can stream the iTunes content over USB2, which I have at the moment for the big drive. I would need to go buy an enclosure with FW800 to run it as a boot drive. I could use that same money and go get a 500GB Hybrid drive and install myself and leave the USB2 as data only. If the install is painless but tedious, I might just do that. If the FW800 route would be robust enough to run the OS and stream data to other devices simultaneously (ie use it as I would the regular internal drive), I might just do that and wait for SSD prices to come tumbling down and do a bigger internal SSD in the future.
My trusty G5 dual tower 1.8 is competent, but slow for HD video rendering. Would the new Mini be a significant upgrade for me? I have a great monitor and keyboard already. I can't see much difference between the Mini and standard Imac, beside the slower internal drive. If I use an external firewire drive for capturing, would this no longer be an issue?

Issue: Set up a separate user and trying to import information from a Mac Book that is having issues. Mac Book was backed up to an external HD via Time Machine
Question: Is it possible to use time machine to transfer some of the information (photos, music, files) from the external hard drive to the Mac Mini? Is it possible to extract the information from the hard drive by connecting it to the Mac Mini without using Time Machine?
My old Mini is in the next room to the wireless DSL modem. It gets one to three max bars, usually two, and it's just through one interior wall. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.
