MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And Trackpad Suddenly Stop Working - Force Shutdown

Dec 20, 2009

Sometimes while using computer, the entire keyboard and trackpad suddenly go completely unresponsive and I can't do anything. The only button that works is the power button. It's so annoying because I have to do an emergency shutdown and I hate doing that. Is there any relief?

OS X :: MacBook Trackpad And Keyboard Stopped Working Suddenly

Feb 10, 2009

It seems that during my afternoon class, I shut down my macbook and then when I went to use it about 10 minutes later the keyboard nor the trackpad works. Now the keyboard/trackpad is not defective as it works via the OSX install cd and it works in Windows Vista (dual booted) When ever I start up OSX it just comes up and the mouse is in the upper left hand corner, and the keyboard doesn't work at all. I have tried a pram reset by pressing command + option + p + r and that did nothing. When I am in OSX the only way to get out is to hold down the power button till the macbook turns off. What else could be wrong is there anything I can do, the nearest Apple store is about 80 miles away so I am trying to avoid that at this point as it seems like a software issue.

OS X :: Trackpad Hand Gestures Suddenly Stop Working?

Feb 8, 2010

I restarted my MBP to install some updates and when I started working on it again I noticed that the trackpad gestures had stopped responding. This has happened to me before but I have no idea why. I know that when I reboot it again, that they will start working again, but it's annoying to restart everytime the gestures stop working.

OS X Yosemite :: Keyboard / Trackpad Stop Working After Sleep Mode?

Dec 3, 2014

After a few hours of uptime, certain keys on my keyboard stop working and I have to reboot: both command keys and the zero key. Sometimes, after the computer has been in sleep a long time, the keyboard and mouse don't respond at all. I can get the computer to wake up again by pressing the power key, but the mouse and keyboard don't respond, so I can't do anything except hard boot.  This problem first appeared after the update to 10.10.1. (I'm dealing with it right now, so I'm getting the '0' through the keyboard viewer, but there's no way to access that from the password screen.)

MacBook Air :: Keyboard, Trackpad And Bluetooth Went Suddenly Dead

Jun 22, 2012

I was using my laptop as usual and the keyboard just stopped working, tried the trackpad and it was also gone.  Used an USB mouse to get to preferences and no trackpas is being recognized by the laptop.  I wanted to activate bluetooth to use an external keyboard but no bluetooth device is recognized inside neither.

Rebooted, powered off & on, plugged the MagSafe connector, tried without power and then used the three-prong power cable plugged it into a grounded outlet.  No change, keyboard, trackpad and bluetooth are dead.

This laptop never showed any issues at all and, as I mentioned, I was working as usual with it.

I tried to hibernate (closing and opening) my laptop to no avail. it was only after i had reset it (held on to the power button) did my keyboard and trackpad return to the normal state. Is there any logical explanation to this?

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And Trackpad Stop Functioning

Oct 15, 2010

I've been having this problem with my Macbook Pro for quite some time now, and it's absolutely infuriating. So far, I've found no solution. As it is out of warranty, I am loathe to take it to the Apple store, but I am beginning to fear I will have no choice. I've got an early 2008 15" MBP with the NVIDIA 8600M GT 512. It spends most of its time in use as a desktop machine, with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected, so I don't notice the problem often. However, any time I take my Mac mobile, I am plagued by this issue. What happens is that, seemingly at random, the keyboard and trackpad will completely stop functioning. The only way to get around the problem is to connect a mouse and reboot, which returns things to normal for a few minutes, then it happens again. If I have no mouse, I have to force-shutdown, as the power key still works.

Sometimes the keyboard and trackpad will shut down all at once, and sometimes they will fluctuate for a while, with keystrokes not registering and trackpad motions not happening. Sometimes keys will stick (not physically) sending a character repeating across the screen until I hit another key. But, in the end, the result is the same: no input functionality, necessitating a reboot. Sometimes I am able to use my MBP for long periods without a problem. Sometimes it happens within minutes. It happens when it's hot, it happens when it's not. There seems to be no real consistency. For a long time I thought that it was a software issue as it never happened while booted into windows. But recently it has happened while booted into Windows 7, though it never happened in XP. The motherboard has been replaced recently, and the issue did not go away.

MacBook :: 2.4 Keyboard/Trackpad, - External Keyboard/Mouse Not Working

Nov 13, 2009

So my friend was using his MacBook and went to do something else. He came back and the screen was black, he hit space and nothing, tried the trackpad and nothing. He restarted by holding the Power button, and it go to the log-in screen, but he can't type anything, or use the trackpad. He has tired restarting several times and no luck. He also tried an external Keyboard/Mouse and that didn't work.

He did plug in a Flash drive and the light turned on, so the USB ports are at least getting power, but nothing is working.

I reset my keyboard, but nothing changed.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Modifier Key Remap Suddenly Not Working?

Mar 29, 2012

I am using a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I use a third-party USB keyboard that is laid out (naturally) Windows-style, with the Alt keys inside (closer to the space bar than) the “Windows logo” keys. I use the Modifier Keys button in the Keyboard preference panel to remap these to the standard Mac configuration, with the Command keys on the inside and the Option keys on the outside.

Today those modifier keys are suddenly reversed back to the default Windows layout. The Keyboard panel still shows my preferred (remapped) configuration, but it is not being honored. I have tried reverting to the default layout and then back again, I have rebooted the system, nothing works—the modifier keys are still stuck in the Windows configuration. I rely heavily on keyboard macros in my work, most of which use the modifier keys, and those keystrokes are built into my fingers as second nature. The reversed modifier keys are driving me crazy. Please help: what can I do to make the keyboard honor my settings in the Keyboard preference panel?

MacBook Air :: Trackpad And Keyboard Not Working?

I have a macbook air which trackpad and keyboard doesn't work.

I have searched the forums and tried the most. Here is a list SMC-ResetPRAM-resetCompletely Clean install of 10.9.3 (ongoing)Repaired permissionsChecked if trackpad settings were wrongClose-Open lid to see if that did the trick I have maybe forgotten something, but as you can see I have tried a lot.It all began after the computer being on for over 1 day. When in the login area the OS tells me that no keyboard was found after like 2-3 minutes. Other external devices works just fine. The funny thing is however, the keyboard works when starting up. It's possible to do commands, and if I hold option down to select a start disk the keyboard works here (I can use the arrows to select a startdisc), and when the computer is asleep I can wake it up by pressing the trackpad. PowerPC :: Trackpad Suddenly Stopped Working - IBook G4 1.44ghz

Aug 28, 2010

The trackpad on my iBook G4 1.44ghz stopped working this morning! At first it went stuttery. I temporarily solved this by plugging in a mouse- without using the mouse itself, this seemed to make the trackpad responsive again.

After letting the iBook go to sleep, the trackpad doesn't work at all; nothing I do seems to make it respond. I've tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, but this hasn't done anything.

Is there anything else I can do, short of buying a new trackpad?

Software :: Mouse And Keyboard Work Momentarily - Suddenly Stop Responding

Jul 26, 2008

I have a PowerMac Dual G4 @ 500mhz that has issue with waking up from sleep. Running Tiger 10.4.11 with a fresh install of it on there. 512mb memory populating all 4 slots. I've verified permission, verified the HDD via disk utility. I've also run MacOSXmemtest that I purchased and that came up clean. I've also reset the PMU. When I wake the computer up from sleep it will usually wake up to a display and then the mouse and keyboard work momentarily (USB MS keyboard and Logitech Mouse) and then I'll get the beachball of death. The mouse and keyboard will then stop responding completely. I have to manually restart the computer but it seems to work great if it doesn't go into sleep.

OS X :: MacBook Pro - Loud Fan And Keyboard / Trackpad Not Working

Jan 4, 2011

Basically I was using my Mac and it froze so I closed the lid. When I opened it again the fan was much louder than normal. It was still frozen and wouldn't respond so I switched it off from the power button. Then I turned it back on, but it wouldn't boot past the grey screen and the fan was still loud. I read some threads here and it said to boot it in safe mode using Shift, I did that and now I'm at the log in screen. However now the keyboard and trackpad aren't responding and the fan is still loud. If I get an external usb mouse and keyboard, any advice on what to do from there?

MacBook Air :: Trackpad, Keyboard USB Port Not Working?

Dec 21, 2008

I have a 2 Gen MBA and today suddenly the keyboard, trackpad and even the USB port stopped working, I tried connect an external mouse but it didn't work, even other USB devices are not working !! I tried the display port it is fine, but I am not sure about the audio port. I tried the SMC reset but it did me no good.

I had bought the MBA from Apple UK but currently I am in INDIA for my winter break from UNI. I don't have my OSX discs at the moment they are back in UK, I tried calling the Applecare but they are closed being a Sunday, and I don't want the local Apple Authorised Service center to touch my air as I don't trust them (The appointment of these repair centers in INDIA is not upto the highest standards !)

The keyboard and the trackpad are working in the Apple hardware test, I was able to move around the cursor and even use the keyboard to select the various options, so I believe the hardware is fine.

So any suggestions what can I do in the meantime, I will call Apple Care in UK tomorrow. I am not back in the UK till the 26th January.

I was just using my Macbook normally and it came up with an error like IP was in use or something with the red exclamation mark. The my internet stopped working so I just restarted it. Now my Macbook is literally not working? I can turn it on but when I get to the login screen, my mouse or keyboard are not working! So all I can do is hold the power button to turn off. It appears OSX is still running fine though because the screen dims after a while and the flashing | in the name input bar is still flashing.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody Trackpad And Keyboard Not Working ?

Mar 25, 2009

For some reason i purchased this three weeks ago. Everything was working fine. However today i guess i closed the lid and then when i opened it, the computer didn't wake up. So i just held the power button and restarted. It booted into Leopard fine but now the trackpad and keyboard don't work....

The trackpad and keyboard seem to be fine when i hold the option key too choose what volume to boot from. It seems for some reason the keyboard and trackpad lose its function once it boots into leopard.

I looked up forums and tried numerous things like VRAM wipes, SMC reset, tried external keyboard and mouse and they only work up until it actually boots into the leopard OS. Tried going through a hub and same problem.

Hardware :: Mouse Buttons Suddenly Stop Working?

For a while now I've had a recurring problem that I can't figure out. The buttons on my mouse will suddenly stop working; I can move the cursor around the screen, but the mouse buttons (all of them, plus the scrollball) do nothing.

It's not a problem with the mouse (so it might not belong in this forum), because I've tried other mice and had the same behaviour. I don't know if there's a pattern, but I think I've only had the problem since I've started running the new Football Manager 2011 game.

Applications :: Network Setup Would Suddenly Stop Working?

Feb 15, 2009

I have had my iPhoto library on a USB drive attached to Time Capsule for some time with no problems. I recently upgraded to iPhoto '09, and still had no problems, so not sure that's related. The library updated ok, and I played with Places and indexed some Faces over more than one session, no problems. Upgraded iPhoto on all the macs and tested their access to the library ok.

Suddenly now, none of the network macs can open the library. iPhoto launches with no pictures visible and has a spinning beechball. I have to Force Quit iPhoto. Same on all macs.

I then copied the library from the networked drive locally to a mac, and iPhoto could then open it perfectly ok. So I guess the library is not corrupt either.

Any ideas why this network setup would suddenly stop working?

Laptops :: MacBook Trackpad And Keyboard Not Working After Disassembly

Feb 8, 2010

I disassembled my MacBook to repair a jammed optical drive. I have two problems: the first is while testing that the optical drive now worked (I tested it will it was still partially disassembled, and it did work) I noticed the track pad and keyboard were not functioning. Obviously the power button works, and the machine booted fine, but the trackpad and the keyboard don't work at all. I had to plug a mouse in to move the pointer. I should note that yes, the trackpad cable was indeed firmly plugged in.

However, at one point when trying to reassemble the top case, the trackpad cable detached from the plastic piece that plugs it into the logic board. I removed the plastic piece, slid it back into place over the wires of the cable and then plugged it back in. So I'm wondering if this means I need a new trackpad cable? My second problem is that upon full reassembly, the machine will not turn on. The power button doesn't work when the top case is firmly back in place and the rest of the machine reassembled. I have no idea what might be causing this.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And Trackpad Not Working When The Battery Is In The Laptop

Oct 13, 2010

About a month ago my Macbook Pro keyboard and trackpad stopped working when the battery was in the laptop. However, when I take the battery out and keep it plugged into an wall outlet, there are no problems. A USB external mouse/keyboard work fine, but its not easy to bring them everywhere I need my laptop. This may not be relevant, but when the mouse and trackpad are not working, the screen still dims when I place my hands over the speakers. I have bought a new battery, hoping that was the problem, but it made no difference. I can't check to see if my software is updated, because my software update is also functioning incorrectly. It takes an average of 5 hours for the software update to search, and it always comes up with "no available updates."

MacBook :: Trackpad And Keyboard Not Working After Disassembly/reassembly?

Feb 8, 2010

I'm a newbie to this forum and haven't been able to find a solution to my specific problem(s) after searching the archives. I disassembled my 1st generation MacBook to repair a jammed optical drive. Well, now I have two new problems:

The first is while testing my repaired optical drive (I tested it while the laptop was still partially disassembled, and the optical drive does now work) I noticed the track pad and keyboard were not functioning. Obviously the power button works, and the machine booted fine, but the trackpad and the entire keyboard don't work at all. I had to plug a mouse in to move the pointer. I should note that yes, the trackpad cable was indeed firmly plugged in. *However, at one point while trying to reassemble the top case, the trackpad cable detached from the plastic piece that plugs it into the logic board. I removed the plastic piece, slid it back into place over the wires of the trackpad cable and then plugged it back in to the logic board. So I'm wondering if this means I now need a new trackpad cable?

The second problem is that upon full reassembly, the machine will not turn on. The power button simply doesn't work when the top case is firmly back in place and the rest of the machine (screws, l-bracket, battery, etc.) is completely reassembled. I have no idea what might be causing this.

The only way I can them to work again is to copy the present page I am on, open a new Tab, paste the link in and all works again? But the not the original Tab. Plus if I try the 'ctrl _ T/pad' to open the options you then get (to then copy subject for one) nothing, yet I tried this in Google Chrome just to test and see if that works and it does. As I was even writing this everything suddenly stop, could not even 'highlight' some of the text and copy (cmd + C) .........
