View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an original mac pro with the stock 250GB drive (along with 2 500GB and 1 TB).
The OS is on the stock drive. If I replace it with the 640GB WD Caviar (on sale at OWC for $80 - [URL] will I see much of a performance improvement?
I replaced the 160GB drive in my 13" MBP with a 640GB drive. I now have the 160 in an external enclosure. I got the huge drive so I can finally copy all my crap from my PC to my MBP and have it in one place. I don't have any big external drives, so I had 2 ideas:
- Make the 640 into 100 and 540 partitions, with the system on 100, and use the external 160 with time machine (assuming that's possible with TM?).
- Make the 640 into 160 and 480, system on 160, clone the system to the external 160 regularly as a backup. This seems better since the external will then be a full working system (I assume), in case my internal drive would ever break.
With either of these, I'm wondering how easy it is to separate all my media onto the other partition, like the itunes library, pictures folder, movies, downloads, etc. Or Should I just stick with one huge partition, and figure out some other partial-backup solution / wait till I get a big external?
I upgraded the HD of my MB (late 2008) to 640GB. I currently have 2 Partitions, System and Data. The only reason why I did this is because I have 2 250GB external HD and I always want to have I cloned copy of my System and Data Partitions. Now, Im planning to get a 1.5T external HD drive, is it a good idea to just have a single partition on my MB and clone it on the one of the partitions on 1.5T HD? will it slow down my system?btw, I am running SL 10.6.4 with 4G of RAM if this is a factor.
View 4 Replies View Relatedso i thought i might as well aksed you people here for some opinions.im in need of large capacity HDD for my uMBP. and i want the 640GB WD cause i heard good review for it, however the WD distributor in my country haven't stock it yet, and they say it might be a little bit as late as early january cause i need it urgetnly, here the question, the WD distributor in my country do have stock for 640GB but its the external one, the My Passport [URL]i have bad experiences in online shopping cause in my country the custom is terrible, and they took very long time to scan for shipment, so i thought is it okay if i buy the wd external one then i pry open the casing and put the harddisk inside my umbp ? are they basically the same drive ? and is the casing ( after opened) can be used with my older hard disk to be used as external one ?sorry for my broken english, but i need the answer as son as possible,

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering: Do 17" MacBook Pros run cooler than 15" MacBook Pros, if they're both spec'd the same way, and running the same tasks? I would think so. Does anybody know? Has anyone tested this?
It's not pressing; I'm just curious.
I have the choice of two Mac Pros in my office and was wondering if anyone had any insight into which would better for video work (Final Cut, After Effects, etc.) and Photoshop?
Mac Pro #1
Quad Core Xeon
2.8 ghz
2 Processors
8 Cores
4gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Mac Pro #2
Dual Core Xeon
3 ghz
2 Processors
4 Cores
4gb RAM
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
From what I can gather from doing some research, it appears the processor is better on option #1, but the video card is better on option #2. So you think the processor over rules the better video card? Would it be worth taking machine #1 (with 8 cores) and purchasing this improved video card(http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB...s=topSellers)?
I can't really afford the Mac Pro right now and I'd have to upgrade it anyway. I can get a G5 with upgraded Ram Dual 2.5 and applecare for around 1000. I figure if I have problems with the G5 Apple might end up replacing it with a Mac Pro in the future anyway. Will Leopard work on a G5? How long do you think companies will keep making G5 compatible programs for?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIve been reading much about the new OpenCL planned for release with Snow Leopard.
I just purchased an early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.66 and tossed in a 4890. What sort of tangible power boosts will OpenCL and snowl eopard bring. Thanks in advance
I am going to upgrade about 70 MBP's running leopard to Snow Leopard. We image with a Mac OS server, but these upgrades will not be fresh wipes/installs. we will just be upgrading their OS's. Can I use the mac server to do this? I have ARD software as well. Can I somehow place the image of software on the mac os Server (running Snow) and push out to the MBP's? Any tips or hints would be great. Upgrading machines from tiger to snow
View 4 Replies View RelatedWill the 5870 work with the '09 pros? I would certainly buy a used 09' then since it's only a minor speed bump and nothing else.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThis doesn't pertain specifically to Mac Pros or Power Macs, but I couldn't find a better place for this.
Is it possible to build a Mac from scratch, like a PC? I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to find what proprietary hardware, if any, Apple still uses. I use a macbook right now and I'm wondering if it's as simple as booting with the Leopard install disc.
On a similar note, is it possible to use boot camp on a separate internal drive rather than partitioning an existing one formatting for OS X?
I'm looking to purchase a Mac Pro as a file server for a client and wanted to spec 4x 1TB HDs and hardware RAID 5 via the Apple RAID card as we have done many times before. However I've noticed that the RAID card is no longer a build to order option although the card is still listed within the Apple Store.Does anyone know if it is still compatible with the new Mac Pros? This would seriously dent it's use as a file server if not.
View 1 Replies View Relatedm having trouble deciding between these two models. Might get the 3.33 Ghz 6c Westmere but leaning towards the 8c models. Why is the 2009 Nehalem faster? The guy at the Apple store was suprised by that also. Are there any changes in the 2010 2.4 8c Westmere from the 2009 Nehalem model?I will be using it for intensive music software (Prottools, Digital Performer, East West, Symphobia, Vienna Symp Inst. View 11 Replies View RelatedLooks like the 2.26 is doing better after all. Some users have even gotten Cinebench scores for the new 2.26 like: 3142 (single) and 20,138 (multiple) reported here.
CINEBENCH 10
This free benchmark app uses real world code from Cinema 4D to render a sample project. It stresses all available cores. In the case of the Nehalem, hyperthreading fools the app into thinking there are 16 cores on the 8-core models and 8 cores on the 4-core models. The graph below shows the Cinebench rating for "Multi-CPU" render test.
GEEKBENCH 2
It's not only multi-core aware, but it includes some memory tests which explains why the Nehalem based Mac Pros beat the older Penryn based Power Macs with higher core frequencies. The graph below shows the overall 32-bit score.
There is also a 64-bit version of Geekbench. Fewer results exist for it since, for some unexplained reason, consumers will gladly spend thousands for a new Mac but resist purchasing a $20 serial number in support of a starving Mac developer.
Last night Lloyd Chambers of [URL] tweaked his DigLloydTools app (DLT) that we use to test memory throughput. It's now more accurate. The bad news is that it showed that when we put 8 sticks of memory in the 8-core 2.26GHz Nehalem, our throughput for memory read/write (memmove) dropped by 1/3. It turns a triple channel memory bus into a dual channel memory bus.
Specifically, in our test, the combined read/write throughput dropped from 9261MB/s to 6195MB/s when we went from 6x2GB to 8x2GB configuration.
Now, don't panic. That doesn't necessarily affect real world app performance unless the particular app you are running is saturating the memory bus. Which apps saturate? I don't know yet. I'm running our complete real world test suite including Pro Apps and 3D Games in both the 12G and 16G config. If I find anything that's significantly slowed by the 8x2G config, I'll post it here as well as on Bare Feats.
Can you upgrade the processors in the new Mac Pro's in the future if you choose to?
I have seen a couple people mention to but the 2.6 for now and upgrade them in the future when the price of the processors drops.
I didn't know if I was misinterpreting what they were writing.
Hi, I have a question to Owner of the New Mac Pro Nehalem (4 Cores):
How many CPU you see in After Effects CS4?
I have built a hackintosh mac pro 3.1 on dell T5400 and working good. Now I wan to build a real mac with mac parts. As titled, will there be any switch to make the single cpu working on dual cpu board, OR no way, that I need to put two? Or it's even simpler just boot the machine with one cpu left on board. Since putting 1 cpu save lots money for me.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI ordered some hard drives for an upcoming low-budget short film the other day. Due to budget constraints I couldn't exactly buy the "ideal" drives, but these will work fine nonetheless. I ended up with the following:(2) WD Caviar Blue 500GB (WD5000AAKS) 7,200-rpm (for camera data capture; 1 primary and 1 backup)(1) WD Caviar Black 640GB (WD6401AALS) 7,200-rpm (for editing and post)After unpacking the drives, I proceeded to run the AJA System Test on each drive to test the read/write speeds and noticed some interesting things. Pssst! Want an Intel 'Nehalem' processor on the cheap? Well, just go and ask the chip giant for one. It's 2.66GHz 'Bloomfield' CPU has been price at just $284, it has been claimed.
That's the batch price, of course. To get it, you'll have to buy a 1000 CPUs at once - boxed Bloomfields will come in slightly higher than that.
As previously reported, the 2.66GHz Bloomfield - Intel's desktop Nehalem - will also be made available in 2.93GHz and 3.2GHz versions. The pricing, posted by Chinese-language site HKEPC, confirms the latter will be an Extreme-branded gaming PC part - it'll cost $999. The mid-range Bloomfield will cost $562.
I want a mac pro is for storage space and to play games on. I want to use a GTX285 and I also want to run vmware fusion full time.
