Mac Pro :: Nehalem Memory -- 6 Is Better Than 8 Sticks?
Mar 15, 2009
Last night Lloyd Chambers of [URL] tweaked his DigLloydTools app (DLT) that we use to test memory throughput. It's now more accurate. The bad news is that it showed that when we put 8 sticks of memory in the 8-core 2.26GHz Nehalem, our throughput for memory read/write (memmove) dropped by 1/3. It turns a triple channel memory bus into a dual channel memory bus.
Specifically, in our test, the combined read/write throughput dropped from 9261MB/s to 6195MB/s when we went from 6x2GB to 8x2GB configuration.
Now, don't panic. That doesn't necessarily affect real world app performance unless the particular app you are running is saturating the memory bus. Which apps saturate? I don't know yet. I'm running our complete real world test suite including Pro Apps and 3D Games in both the 12G and 16G config. If I find anything that's significantly slowed by the 8x2G config, I'll post it here as well as on Bare Feats.

I have recently bought 2 4GB 1333MHz memory to be used with my Mac Pro mid 2010 nehalem processor. It works fine, turns on and all, but after opening a few programs and letting it run a little and i ask him to shut down, it takes me to the grey screen with the little rolling ball and does not shut down.
Info:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have those sticks for my psp and the work great. PS3 sees them perfectly and the old pc I had, but for some reason my brand new imac doesn't see the memory stick I put in.
Am I putting it in the wrong way or do I need to buy something extra to get them to work on my mac?

I have three 16gb USB memory sticks that don't work correctly with Snow Leopard. Disk Utility is will only format them in FAT32 format and I'm unable to successfully copy files to and from the sticks.
They work perfectly fine under Windows in Boot Camp and also on my Windows based laptop. Sadly, I purchased them after I had installed Snow Leopard and I don't have access to another Mac with an earlier copy of Mac OS X to test them.
Is this most likely a Snow Leopard anomaly do you think or is it just that these sticks are not OS X compatible?

I'll be ordering RAM from OWC for hex core 3.33 mac pro in the next few days. I can't spend $1k at once on 24GB, so I'm thinking of getting just 2x8GB for now and get the extra stick in about 2 months or so.
I know theres about 25% or so theoretical bandwidth loss with just two sticks, but what's the real, noticeable performance hit vs 3...if there is any?

I tried to purchase a 8 gb upgrade kit from owc. The first set of 2x4 gb ram modules gave me kernal panics in every configuration. I sent them back and they sent me another one that was bad. I have a fourth coming in the morning tomorrow, and I am not confident that it will work either. The 4gb of stock apple ram function fine. I ran an extended apple hardware test and my systems supposedly functions normally.
I have a 17" unibody 2.93.

Is it OK to use two different size ram sticks if they are the same type/speed?
Say I wanted to fit a 1gb and a 2gb stick into my macbook, but both were 667MHz DDR2, would that cause harm to my system?

We just got an extra gig of ram, I put it in the iMac, but it sticks out like 1-2 mm more than the stick already in there. Is that a problem? Or is it just different to the one already in there.

i deleted the music off of the usb using my mac, then ejected my usb. When I put it back into my windows pc it said the memory was full. I then put it back into my mac and the files appeared in the Trash so i deleted them. Now there was nothing im my trash, and as soon as i put my usb in there was an old cv which i had deleted of my usb a month ago I don't understand why the files are in the trash when only the usb is plugged in, does this mean that the deleted file is on my mac or usb? and also what is the relationship between mac and usb stick?

I am considering purchasing a Mac Pro, probably at the begining of next year when the newer models have (hopefully) been released.
My plan is to get the standard model with Dual 2.8GHz Quad-cores (though this could all change with the new systems) and the lowest memory option - 2GB DDR2.
I plan to upgrade the RAM myself using memory from another supplier such as crucial. I have done this in the past with my macbook (taking it from 1Gb to 2Gb). When I did this I found that apple had installed 2x512Mb sticks from the factory which meant I had to buy 2x1Gb sticks rather than just adding a single 1Gb stick.
My question is, is there any way of telling what I will recieve from apple if I order 2Gb or is it the luck of the draw? i.e. will I get 1x2Gb or 2x1Gb etc etc...
The reason I ask is that I would prefer to use the single 4Gb sticks when I come to upgrade maximise the amount of RAM I can install.

I found the "reture/enter" key on my MBA keyboard stands somehow higher than other keys, and not sure if the key would touch the screen when closing the lid. Is there any problem with it and is it the same on your MBA?

m having trouble deciding between these two models. Might get the 3.33 Ghz 6c Westmere but leaning towards the 8c models. Why is the 2009 Nehalem faster? The guy at the Apple store was suprised by that also. Are there any changes in the 2010 2.4 8c Westmere from the 2009 Nehalem model?I will be using it for intensive music software (Prottools, Digital Performer, East West, Symphobia, Vienna Symp Inst. All web and graphics software (Photoshop, Flash, InDesign, etc and Astronomy programs)

Looks like the 2.26 is doing better after all. Some users have even gotten Cinebench scores for the new 2.26 like: 3142 (single) and 20,138 (multiple) reported here.
CINEBENCH 10
This free benchmark app uses real world code from Cinema 4D to render a sample project. It stresses all available cores. In the case of the Nehalem, hyperthreading fools the app into thinking there are 16 cores on the 8-core models and 8 cores on the 4-core models. The graph below shows the Cinebench rating for "Multi-CPU" render test.
GEEKBENCH 2
It's not only multi-core aware, but it includes some memory tests which explains why the Nehalem based Mac Pros beat the older Penryn based Power Macs with higher core frequencies. The graph below shows the overall 32-bit score.
There is also a 64-bit version of Geekbench. Fewer results exist for it since, for some unexplained reason, consumers will gladly spend thousands for a new Mac but resist purchasing a $20 serial number in support of a starving Mac developer.

Can you upgrade the processors in the new Mac Pro's in the future if you choose to?
I have seen a couple people mention to but the 2.6 for now and upgrade them in the future when the price of the processors drops.
I didn't know if I was misinterpreting what they were writing.

I have built a hackintosh mac pro 3.1 on dell T5400 and working good. Now I wan to build a real mac with mac parts. As titled, will there be any switch to make the single cpu working on dual cpu board, OR no way, that I need to put two? Or it's even simpler just boot the machine with one cpu left on board. Since putting 1 cpu save lots money for me.

I am trying to upgrade the RAM in my white macbook from 2 GB to 4GB using the RAM from a Sony VAIO laptop. If I put both 2 GB sticks from the other laptop in, my computer turns on but does not boot. The screen never turns on. If i have one of the original sticks in, and one of the new sticks in, it boots up fine and the system profiler recognizes the new RAM and says it is in working order. Why can't I boot with both sticks in? They are both DDR2 667MHz sticks and are all working.

Pssst! Want an Intel 'Nehalem' processor on the cheap? Well, just go and ask the chip giant for one. It's 2.66GHz 'Bloomfield' CPU has been price at just $284, it has been claimed.
That's the batch price, of course. To get it, you'll have to buy a 1000 CPUs at once - boxed Bloomfields will come in slightly higher than that.
As previously reported, the 2.66GHz Bloomfield - Intel's desktop Nehalem - will also be made available in 2.93GHz and 3.2GHz versions. The pricing, posted by Chinese-language site HKEPC, confirms the latter will be an Extreme-branded gaming PC part - it'll cost $999. The mid-range Bloomfield will cost $562.
