Hardware :: Car Charger Adapter For New I5 / I7 Macbook Pros?
Apr 29, 2010
i've been looking over the net for an hour coming up with many products. However, they seem to specify only a limited range of macbooks/pros and it worries me if i ever decide to buy the wrong one. is there any car charger adapter for the new i5/i7 macbook pros out yet?

Im in England currently (From the USA) and am using a "DYNEX" converter adapter to switch the electric current down so I can plug in/charge my Macbook Pro and iPad. Â It works, however the charger buzzes pretty loudly and gets hot. I brought two, one started smelling like melted plastic and stopped charging altogether. That particular charger has faulted at home before (back in the USA), so I'm not sure if it died because of the converter or because it's just faulty. Â
I have plugged in the newer charger and it also buzzes, but I'm really worried to keep it plugged in because I don't want it to fault out too. Is it normal for it to buzz like that when plugged into a converter adapter? Â

I was just wondering: Do 17" MacBook Pros run cooler than 15" MacBook Pros, if they're both spec'd the same way, and running the same tasks? I would think so. Does anybody know? Has anyone tested this?
It's not pressing; I'm just curious.

Is it better to keep the charger in after a completely charged or pull out the charger. Basically I'm wondering if the power is pulled from the UPS after the battery is completely charged or is it still constantly charging the battery.

I am going to upgrade about 70 MBP's running leopard to Snow Leopard. We image with a Mac OS server, but these upgrades will not be fresh wipes/installs. we will just be upgrading their OS's. Can I use the mac server to do this? I have ARD software as well. Can I somehow place the image of software on the mac os Server (running Snow) and push out to the MBP's? Any tips or hints would be great. Upgrading machines from tiger to snow

Buying both the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter AND Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter is pretty expensive...
I was wondering if I purchase the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, will I be able to use a simple DVI to VGA adapter to use it as a VGA adapter also???
I'm not sure if the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter only sends digital signal or digital & analog signal.

The default Cirrus Logic driver for BootCamp outputs at 64dB. It makes no sense why they would put a cap on it since the driver outputs at 74dB in OSX. I have modified the driver and removed the volume cap so it now outputs louder in Windows than OSX!
Volume in Windows Before: 64dB
Volume in Windows After: 80dB
You can get the driver at:
[URL]
(Windows 7/Vista 32+64 Bit Driver)
It should work with any of the following Cirrus Logic chips:
CDB4206
CS4206A
CDB4207
It really helps with YouTube videos that have horrible volume or if you like to have music that fills the whole house.
Let me know if you want the XP driver with the volume uncapped so I can work on it as well.

I lean to the standard drive at 5400 rpm. Why? All my video editing is done with an external firewire drive, and I think the 7200 generates more heat than the 5400.
For web design I don't see how a 7200 speed is much of a benefit, considering the extra heat generated may negate the benefit of a faster drive. I think heat (and dust) is the bane of all electronics.
I'm fixing to order the 15" i7 and will use it for running Adobe CS5 web suite. Final Cut Pro for video- and will use a firewire drive.

Do you think the rumoured Macbook Pros (Coming out in Q1 2010) will have USB 3.0 built in?If not, do you think it's worth waiting for the [even] next Macbook Pro update which will hopefully have it?It might sound silly but I feel it's a big investment - if you're planning on keeping the MBP for years, USB 3.0 is SO going to help speed up transferring data.

Im wondering whether to get a base 15" MBP at the update or get a more powerful but refurbished machine... how much can we expect the Refurbished models to drop from their current pricepoint??? What would be a smarter choice??? The most intensive task I plan to do is video editing with screenflow and streaming with camtwist

I have the choice of two Mac Pros in my office and was wondering if anyone had any insight into which would better for video work (Final Cut, After Effects, etc.) and Photoshop?
Mac Pro #1
Quad Core Xeon
2.8 ghz
2 Processors
8 Cores
4gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Mac Pro #2
Dual Core Xeon
3 ghz
2 Processors
4 Cores
4gb RAM
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
From what I can gather from doing some research, it appears the processor is better on option #1, but the video card is better on option #2. So you think the processor over rules the better video card? Would it be worth taking machine #1 (with 8 cores) and purchasing this improved video card(http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB...s=topSellers)?

The Apple one looks tempting as it comes with 6 batteries and 29€ isn't too much, plus, as usual, it looks brilliant. I looked at some 3rd party chargers as well ranging from 20€ to 40€. None of them was stunning or special by any means. Cheaper ones usually came with two or four batteries and some came without batteries. I don't really need it for else than Magic Mouse, occasionally for something else too.

I can't really afford the Mac Pro right now and I'd have to upgrade it anyway. I can get a G5 with upgraded Ram Dual 2.5 and applecare for around 1000. I figure if I have problems with the G5 Apple might end up replacing it with a Mac Pro in the future anyway. Will Leopard work on a G5? How long do you think companies will keep making G5 compatible programs for?

I just purchased an early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.66 and tossed in a 4890. What sort of tangible power boosts will OpenCL and snowl eopard bring. Thanks in advance

Will the 5870 work with the '09 pros? I would certainly buy a used 09' then since it's only a minor speed bump and nothing else.

This doesn't pertain specifically to Mac Pros or Power Macs, but I couldn't find a better place for this.
Is it possible to build a Mac from scratch, like a PC? I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to find what proprietary hardware, if any, Apple still uses. I use a macbook right now and I'm wondering if it's as simple as booting with the Leopard install disc.
On a similar note, is it possible to use boot camp on a separate internal drive rather than partitioning an existing one formatting for OS X?

I'm looking to purchase a Mac Pro as a file server for a client and wanted to spec 4x 1TB HDs and hardware RAID 5 via the Apple RAID card as we have done many times before. However I've noticed that the RAID card is no longer a build to order option although the card is still listed within the Apple Store.Does anyone know if it is still compatible with the new Mac Pros? This would seriously dent it's use as a file server if not.

I have the 65W white square adapter for my 17" Powerbook, and I have the Yo-Yo adapter for my 12" Ibook (G3 500 mhz).Is there any reason why I cannot use the 65W adapter on my 12" book in place of the Yo-Yo adapter? (I know for power requirement reasons I cannot use the Yo-Yo on my 17")

I didn't realize that SL automatically boots in 32 bit, even on the new iMacs. I have a core i5 with 8 gigs of RAM. Assuming I boot in 64 bit mode today, will my computer now utilize all 8 gigs? Was it only using 4 gigs in 32 bit mode? Also, will some applications not run if I boot 64 bit?

So I've set up my new mac pro per [URL] recommendations and have a SS boot drive and all my data on a separate Master drive (raid(0) stripe). Lloyd Chambers recommends keeping your home folder on the boot drive as it has a lot of extraneous app files stored in the library. This just means you don't store any data files in your home folder, you put them all on your data disk (with some exception to desktop files- see below) On the other hand, Chris Parillo at [URL:...] suggests just moving your entire home folder. This seems more convenient from a user perspective but does cause some mixing of app files and data files that could cause problems down the road. Such problems include, if for some reason, your system misses the home folder, it will create a new one and all your preferences will be suddenly changed. With this is mind, I've decided to keep my home folder on the boot drive, but it is now annoying to have my desktop files on my boot drive. Again, this is bad mixing of Data and App files and it makes it so if I want to move a file over to the Data file, I have to remember to command click so it doesn't just copy it over and leave two files, one on the desktop and a new copy on the data file. I can't just drag and drop, because it is just copying the file to a separate disk. So if I forget to command click, I have to manually trash the desktop files.
So now if I only had a solution to move my desktop folder location. Anyone have some ideas? I've tried the options in this thread: [URL:...] but they haven't seemed to work. I used a similar terminal trick to move my mail folder off my home folder, why can't I do the same with the desktop folder? Any suggestions or other pros and cons to moving the entire home folder over?
