MacBook :: Inputs On Partitioning 640GB Internal HD?

Dec 7, 2010

I upgraded the HD of my MB (late 2008) to 640GB. I currently have 2 Partitions, System and Data. The only reason why I did this is because I have 2 250GB external HD and I always want to have I cloned copy of my System and Data Partitions. Now, Im planning to get a 1.5T external HD drive, is it a good idea to just have a single partition on my MB and clone it on the one of the partitions on 1.5T HD? will it slow down my system?btw, I am running SL 10.6.4 with 4G of RAM if this is a factor.

MacBook Pro :: Partitioning Extra Internal HDD In It?

Apr 3, 2012

I bought a Mac Book Pro late 2011 2.3 i7 750gb 8gb ram moved the 750 to the optical bay then replaced it with a mushkin 240gb SSD, I love it. except I started using time machine on my 750gb internal drive and have run out of space and I thought I could control the space it uses, surprise surprise.  I decided to delete my time machine saves and partition my 750gb Hard drive and when I did I get this message, Partition failed with Error: This operation requires a newer version of Mac OSX for this disk.I looked over the disk and verified and repaired it, The smart status is verified and the partition map scheme is GUID, so on paper everything looks really good.

MacBook Pro :: New 640GB Drive - How Many Partitions

Dec 3, 2009

I replaced the 160GB drive in my 13" MBP with a 640GB drive. I now have the 160 in an external enclosure. I got the huge drive so I can finally copy all my crap from my PC to my MBP and have it in one place. I don't have any big external drives, so I had 2 ideas:

- Make the 640 into 100 and 540 partitions, with the system on 100, and use the external 160 with time machine (assuming that's possible with TM?).
- Make the 640 into 160 and 480, system on 160, clone the system to the external 160 regularly as a backup. This seems better since the external will then be a full working system (I assume), in case my internal drive would ever break.

With either of these, I'm wondering how easy it is to separate all my media onto the other partition, like the itunes library, pictures folder, movies, downloads, etc. Or Should I just stick with one huge partition, and figure out some other partial-backup solution / wait till I get a big external?

OS X :: Recording Software Not Recognizing Inputs

Dec 14, 2009

I have a bunch of audio recording software, some of which is transferred over from my old PowerBook G4 running Tiger, not all of which is absolutely known to work with Snow Leopard (which I have on my brand new iMac). The rest is known to work with SL, but for some reason isn't recognizing the audio inputs and in some cases, ends up crashing whenever I try to do anything. My theory is that there may be some sort of conflict with older versions or preferences that transferred over when I used Migration Assistant to set up the new computer last week.

I've gone through the system and user libraries and tried to remove all of the preferences files and other things that would have been referenced by older versions of the software, in an attempt to fix this issue, but I've had no luck yet. I'm wondering if a clean reinstall of SL may be the solution, skipping Migration Assistant and then just copying my important preference files manually? If that's the case, how would I go about doing the reinstall? I've never done it before.

Mac Mini :: (2 Inputs) VGA Image Not Clear - DVI Okay

Mar 24, 2010

I'm looking for something fairly inexpensive - less than $250). I've got a new Samsung P2350 - which is nice - but it only has one DVI input and one VGA input. This was all I figured I needed when I picked it up. I've got an XP machine connected via DVI (using long DVI cable because the PC is in a closet on the other side of the room). My new mac mini is connected via Apples mini-display-port to vga adapter & std 4-5 ft VGA cable.

My issue is that the Mini's VGA image is not nearly as clear as it is when I connect via DVI. As a result, I'd like to be able to connect both systems to the same monitor via DVI. As another possible option (and much cheaper solution). Is it possible that the DVI to VGA adapter Apple sells would yield a better picture than the min-disp to VGA adapter that I'm currently using?

Mac Pro :: Difference Between WD Caviar Blue 500GB & WD Caviar Black 640GB?

Jul 27, 2010

I ordered some hard drives for an upcoming low-budget short film the other day. Due to budget constraints I couldn't exactly buy the "ideal" drives, but these will work fine nonetheless. I ended up with the following:(2) WD Caviar Blue 500GB (WD5000AAKS) 7,200-rpm (for camera data capture; 1 primary and 1 backup)(1) WD Caviar Black 640GB (WD6401AALS) 7,200-rpm (for editing and post)After unpacking the drives, I proceeded to run the AJA System Test on each drive to test the read/write speeds and noticed some interesting things. Being a nerd, I was simply curious. And just to preface, all three drives were blank and freshly formatted (Mac OS Extended), with no data previously written to them. Here's what I noticed

MacBook Pro :: BootCamp And Partitioning - OS X And Vista

Jul 16, 2010

I am planning on a getting my MPB (15") very soon and having been a windows user all along, I have a couple of questions about putting windows on my new MPB.

-Win7 Upgrade: I currently own a valid copy of XP and a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disc. Is it possible to install the XP, then upgrade to Win7 on my MBP? If so, are there any guides/tricks I should know of before attempting?

-Timing: Can I install the windows after I've played around in OS X and installed/saved a couple of things there? Will installing windows wipe out my stuff in OS X or is it completely unrelated? My concern here is that I will be getting my MPB before I can get my copy of windows back, and during that time I need to do some work.

-Partitioning amount: this kind of ties into the previous question. How much should I partition (% wise) for the windows, and when should I do it?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Disc Drive Making Crunching Sound After Partitioning?

Mar 2, 2009

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.

I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent.

Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.
