Mac Pro :: 5870 Work With The '09 Pros?
Jul 27, 2010Will the 5870 work with the '09 pros? I would certainly buy a used 09' then since it's only a minor speed bump and nothing else.

View 7 RepliesFinally got my Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X hooked up to my 2009 MP... and been trying to get it set up so I don't have to pull the old GT120 GPU out of the PCIe slot every time I want to boot up in Windows Vista x64 on the 5870. The GT120 still boots up beautifully to OSX with the 5870 in, but I can't seem to get the 5870 as default on WinVista64. My guess is it has something to do with the EFI, as I get the gray "pre-apple" screen when I boot with the GT120, but not with the 5870. The 5870 only starts to send out a signal once the Windows loading screen shows up.
I'm trying to completely (or at least effectively) disable the GT120 in Boot Camp/Vista x64.
Is it even possible without a BIOS?
I've already tried disabling the GT120 "Display Adapter" under Device Manager.
I recently sold my XFX 4870 in anticipation of the new cards that will be coming to the MP's soon. I understand that the question will not be answered until the new MP's come out and someone can extract the BIOS. But I wanted to start a thread of which cards (Brand, Model, Rev #) works with our MP's (looks like 2008 and later).
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering: Do 17" MacBook Pros run cooler than 15" MacBook Pros, if they're both spec'd the same way, and running the same tasks? I would think so. Does anybody know? Has anyone tested this?
It's not pressing; I'm just curious.
I have the choice of two Mac Pros in my office and was wondering if anyone had any insight into which would better for video work (Final Cut, After Effects, etc.) and Photoshop?
Mac Pro #1
Quad Core Xeon
2.8 ghz
2 Processors
8 Cores
4gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Mac Pro #2
Dual Core Xeon
3 ghz
2 Processors
4 Cores
4gb RAM
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
From what I can gather from doing some research, it appears the processor is better on option #1, but the video card is better on option #2. So you think the processor over rules the better video card? Would it be worth taking machine #1 (with 8 cores) and purchasing this improved video card(http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB...s=topSellers)?
I can't really afford the Mac Pro right now and I'd have to upgrade it anyway. I can get a G5 with upgraded Ram Dual 2.5 and applecare for around 1000. I figure if I have problems with the G5 Apple might end up replacing it with a Mac Pro in the future anyway. Will Leopard work on a G5? How long do you think companies will keep making G5 compatible programs for?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIve been reading much about the new OpenCL planned for release with Snow Leopard.
I just purchased an early 2009 Mac Pro Quad 2.66 and tossed in a 4890. What sort of tangible power boosts will OpenCL and snowl eopard bring. Thanks in advance
I am going to upgrade about 70 MBP's running leopard to Snow Leopard. We image with a Mac OS server, but these upgrades will not be fresh wipes/installs. we will just be upgrading their OS's. Can I use the mac server to do this? I have ARD software as well. Can I somehow place the image of software on the mac os Server (running Snow) and push out to the MBP's? Any tips or hints would be great. Upgrading machines from tiger to snow
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis doesn't pertain specifically to Mac Pros or Power Macs, but I couldn't find a better place for this.
Is it possible to build a Mac from scratch, like a PC? I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to find what proprietary hardware, if any, Apple still uses. I use a macbook right now and I'm wondering if it's as simple as booting with the Leopard install disc.
On a similar note, is it possible to use boot camp on a separate internal drive rather than partitioning an existing one formatting for OS X?
Is it the Western Digital 6400AAKS?? The stock hdd??
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to purchase a Mac Pro as a file server for a client and wanted to spec 4x 1TB HDs and hardware RAID 5 via the Apple RAID card as we have done many times before. However I've noticed that the RAID card is no longer a build to order option although the card is still listed within the Apple Store.Does anyone know if it is still compatible with the new Mac Pros? This would seriously dent it's use as a file server if not.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was what kind of FPS do you get in WoW with mac pro 5.1 and 5870 - what wow settings, resolution and how many monitors (size).
The FPS are generally ok on my mac with high settings in windowed (decent with ultra) but I'm getting weird FPS drops when I quickly pan around, generally out in the open. I've copied the WoW game folder from my old mac pro 1,1 - wondering if that has anything to do with performance. Would I be better off downloading the game client again?
i have a 2008 mac pro 2xQuad 2.8 GHz 4GB RAM
I just upgraded from nvidia 285 to ati 5870. The FPS in Starcraft 2
did not go up. Its almost exactly the same.
I was suprised so i check the CPU usage. Its at 115% (of 800, 100 per core)
spred out over the cores. So the CPU doesnt seem to be the problem. There are over 1 GB free of RAM,little disk and network usage.
I run 10.6.6 it was just reinstalled before the upgrade.
No other download avalible.i tried reinstalling SC2, same.
I have a GTX 285 currently... I'm thinking of getting the new 27"... Would the new card be an upgrade?
View 10 Replies View Relatedanyone think this is possible? I'd check the specs of the card myself but they haven't listed it in the store yet afaik. I'd really like to pick one up, no doubt it'll out perform my GTX 285.

Looking for some info on flashing a 5870 with an EFI rom. I see references here of people doing it, but no dedicated thread like there was for the 4870 and 4890.
What is the best card to buy, where do you get the roms, and what are the gotchya's?

We need a Rom! Lets flash this shitznizzle!

View 13 Replies View RelatedShuffling through various take out containers, I realized that the most pungent stack was resting up a chunk of plastic.
To my surprise, the chunk was my forgotten 5870.
When I bought it last fall, I fervently believed that I would be hurling through Halo 1 at death tempting speeds by now.
Instead, it fights off dust bunnies.
I thought that maybe we should get a glimpse into our 5870 flashing future.
Scraping off the Kung Pao Crusties, I tossed the nearly antiquated card into my Mac Pro to see what I could see.
Still some oddball mystery card in 10.6.3. ATI card, device id of 6898.
So I decided to PRACTICE writing a ROM for it. I KNOW that I won't shortly be busting out into a heavy breathing Doom 3 session via the 5870. I just wanted a glimpse at the hurdles that we will (hopefully) soon be leaping past.
So I took the EFI part of Mac 4870 ROM and had a look at it. My brother once heard a crack addict say that the 5870 and 4870 are kissing cousins. I decided that lacking a 5870 EFI, I would use the 4870 one. I would just update the device id, give it the fixrom.py kiss of accuracy and flash my way to heaven.
First shock was that there wasn't room between 5870 BIOS and Lookup table for GDDR5. (him...like 4870.....)
So I had to scoouch the MCUC table down to give the 49152 for Mac 4870 EFI. Once I did that, I ran out of space about 4K before ROM was done.
SO...IF the EFI 5870 portion is as big as 4870 EFI....and IF most 5870 ROMs are as big as XFX one...we have a problem...AGAIN.
The 128K EEPROM on my 5870 wasn't going to hold the IMAGINARY Mac ROM. So I tossed a 256K chip on it and tried again. And this is where the SURPRISE came in. In years of flashing cards, I haven't seen this one before. I thought perhaps my ROM was horribly mishapen. I updated to Atiflash 3.79. I even tried flashing it with the only other LARGER than 128K ROM I knew, the MacGTX285 ROM. Same result.
So, who knows DOS or ATIFLASH or whatever this is well enough to tell us what it means?
Again, I emphasize, THERE IS NOT A MAC 5870 YET !!! I am being silly and trying to anticipate and solve the early flash problems BEFORE WE GET THE ROM OR DRIVERS !!!
Sadly, our respite from "file too big for EEPROM" seems to have ended. Meanwhile, I would like to see ATIFLASH put a larger than 128K file on my EEPROM. What is wrong?
I am attaching the original XFX file along with my bastardized "mac" one. Anybody?
Shew... I currently have the 4870 and am looking to upgrade to the 5870 for two reason:
1. I have duel ACD and need the dual mini display
2. I am an avid After Effects guru and need all the punch I can get (yes i know the QaudroFX, but it's just not worth it and they never update them).
How do you all think they will compare performance for price? Any early reviews comparing them both on the PC at least?
I am considering a new Mac Pro - and though i have run thru lots of forum discussions here - I have not found one that discusses the advantages of getting the 5870 over the 5770 for a new buyer.
Can anyone help me understand how the 5870 might improve the performance of the Mac Pro when working in:
1 - in general
2 - Handbrake/iMovie/itunes/MPEG Streamclip, etc.
3 - FCP, CS5
Is there anywhere to download the separate driver for the mac version of the ati 5870 yet other than software update or the new DVD?
View 7 Replies View RelatedSeen this discussion scattered throughout threads but I wanted to ask it directly here. What uses could really take advantage of the 5870? I've seen gaming benchmarks (5870 blows the 5770 away) but not much else. Specifically, I'm primarily using Aperture and some light gaming. But I'd love to hear why many of you are opting for the 5870.
View 24 Replies View RelatedSo I've set up my new mac pro per [URL] recommendations and have a SS boot drive and all my data on a separate Master drive (raid(0) stripe). Lloyd Chambers recommends keeping your home folder on the boot drive as it has a lot of extraneous app files stored in the library. This just means you don't store any data files in your home folder, you put them all on your data disk (with some exception to desktop files- see below) On the other hand, Chris Parillo at [URL:...] suggests just moving your entire home folder. This seems more convenient from a user perspective but does cause some mixing of app files and data files that could cause problems down the road. Such problems include, if for some reason, your system misses the home folder, it will create a new one and all your preferences will be suddenly changed. With this is mind, I've decided to keep my home folder on the boot drive, but it is now annoying to have my desktop files on my boot drive. Again, this is bad mixing of Data and App files and it makes it so if I want to move a file over to the Data file, I have to remember to command click so it doesn't just copy it over and leave two files, one on the desktop and a new copy on the data file. I can't just drag and drop, because it is just copying the file to a separate disk. So if I forget to command click, I have to manually trash the desktop files.
So now if I only had a solution to move my desktop folder location. Anyone have some ideas? I've tried the options in this thread: [URL:...] but they haven't seemed to work. I used a similar terminal trick to move my mail folder off my home folder, why can't I do the same with the desktop folder? Any suggestions or other pros and cons to moving the entire home folder over?
