I want to image a set of computers with a drive image without having to pull it from seperate hard drives and using disk utiliity to restore individually. How can I change how the computers are recognized so that they can be hooked into a pro and reconized as drives to include in a raid set? Target Disk Mode? Or is it even possible.

I have a single boot disk with just the apps on, and 2 disks in a software mirrored RAID in which I keep all the important stuff.Its just occurred to me, if the boot drive fails won't the software RAID be destroyed as well?Or will it be easy to recover the data off one of the previously RAID1 disks, when the new boot drive is installed?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed os 10.6 on my MacBook, upgraded to 10.6.2 and everything was still working fine. Then, without thinking, I ripped out my shuffle and plugged in my mirrored (software) raid array of 2 drives. I immediately got the dimmed screen / you must restart your computer in all languages-screen. Now, whenever I plug in the raid into the usb the computer's screen goes dim and I get the same error message in all languages. I've tried booting with the install disk, still crashes. I have all my most important files on that drive.

My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?
Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?
I have a new Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with the Mac RAID card installed with four 1TB drives setup in a RAID 5 array. When creating the volumes in the RAID utility, you can not edit them, resize, etc. If one large volume is created in the RAID utility, you can then partition that one volume using the Apple Disk Utility, which then allows you to resize if needed.

After getting to the installation screen, I selected my time machine as my system restore source. However my system restore source is 10.6 snow leopard disc. After restoring everything, I restart the computer and then I get the following message in 5 different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the power button again". Even after multiple restarts I get the same message.

I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. A few days later the MacBook won't boot up and only displays a blank grey screen. I want to verify if Migration Assistant will restore a backup from NAS drive to a new computer. I just got a WD My Book Live Duo NAS drive which supports Time Machine backups for Lion (and Snow Leopard). Unlike backups in Snow Leopard and the WD My Book World Edition (white light), the new NAS drive creates a sparsebundle the first time a backup is initiated. When I open Time Machine, a single volume for my backup appears. I have 3 Macbooks backing up to this drive but when I open Time Machine on any computer, only the backup created for that computer is shown. This raised a question for me that if my computer dies, how do I restore the backup from the NAS drive to the new computer? Is this what Migration Assistant will do? What are the limitations? Does the new computer have to have the same IP address as the old computer? Can I select what gets restored?

Moving on....today my iMac was acting sluggish, I powered it off and on and the screen initially was pixelated. It then went into recover mode. When I tried the disk repair, the message indicated that it could not be repaired. I called support and they suggest that I hook up my mac mini and go into target disk mode. I did this but it wouldn't mount so I wasn't able to move any files. how to retrieve my files and restore my computer?

I have 2 machines: macbook pro & mac air both both running latest mountian lion. Each keeps its own time share volume on a network server. The two have some sync'd shares, but in general, they are not fully sync'd.
the macbook pro is in the shop for repair for a few days and I'd like to fetch some of it's files from its time machine backup onto the macair. I'm a little reluctant to simply fire up Time Machine on the mac air and respecify it's storage volume to be the macbook pro's volume. I'm concerned about internal configuration changes Time Machine might make to the mac air, including making changes that might cause it to have to do a full (not differential) back up when I reconfigure the mac air's Time Machine to use it's own backup volume after I'm done getting files from the macbook pro backup volume.
In addition to simply getting access to some of the files of the mac in the shop, I want to get the mac calendar from that machine and use it on the mac air. I understand that this may be somewhat trickier.
