OS X :: Can I Move Files And Programs From A Backup To A Computer Without Having To Restore
Jul 22, 2009
Is it possible to move my files and programs that I have backed up on a Time Capsule to my computer without having to restore from a backup?
I had to get my hard drive replaced on my Macbook (running OS 10.5.7) but on all of my backups "Preview" is missing (was somehow deleted when I installed Gimp).
Every time I restore from a backup Preview is gone. Is it possible for me to move all of my files and programs to my MacBook without restoring from a backup?
I have bought the new Macbook Pro and I want to move my programs from my old mac to my new one. How do I do this without damaging the files? Do I have to include a lot of trash files or can I just move the .app file over? I?m using Logic, can you move project files only without moving the program?
I need to know how to move files and programs from a 2006 black macbook to the 13' Air. I then need to delete everything from the black macbook. Can someone walk me through the process or provide a link?
My girlfriend had her iPhone 5 sent in to repair the sleep/wake button and have the battery replaced, and before we left I made a full back up to her MacBook Pro. A few days later the MacBook won't boot up and only displays a blank grey screen. I took the MacBook into the Apple store since this is the only way to restore her photos and music and the Genius diagnosed it as a Logic Board failure and as it is out of warranty, would be quite expensive to fix. If I mounted the hard drive to an external enclosure, is it possible to pull the backup files and restore her phone with a laptop running windows?
I want to verify if Migration Assistant will restore a backup from NAS drive to a new computer. I just got a WD My Book Live Duo NAS drive which supports Time Machine backups for Lion (and Snow Leopard). Unlike backups in Snow Leopard and the WD My Book World Edition (white light), the new NAS drive creates a sparsebundle the first time a backup is initiated. When I open Time Machine, a single volume for my backup appears. I have 3 Macbooks backing up to this drive but when I open Time Machine on any computer, only the backup created for that computer is shown. This raised a question for me that if my computer dies, how do I restore the backup from the NAS drive to the new computer? Is this what Migration Assistant will do? What are the limitations? Does the new computer have to have the same IP address as the old computer? Can I select what gets restored? Â
I'm planning to move to the US from Australia in a couple of months, and intend to buy an iMac over there instead of shipping mine across. Does anyone know if there are any compatibility issues with restoring a backup from a computer from another market?Â
Info: iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.4)
apple is sending me a replacement UMBP. I'm keeping the current one until the replacement arrives and then using a time machine backup on the new one. My time machine backup will restore the new laptop with all the old laptops files, programs, preferences, emails, everything as the old laptop's drive was without having to reinstall everything? Correct?I guess I could always swap drives as well, that might be quicker.
I own an iPad mini Gen1 with a ton of music, apps etc. from my old computer which broke down recently. I'd like to sync my iPad to my Time Capsule, apps, backups and all without losing any files. I still have access to the old Apple ID. So, how do I sync without deleting everything on it? I already deleted my entire iPod trying to do this. Â
Moving on....today my iMac was acting sluggish, I powered it off and on and the screen initially was pixelated. It then went into recover mode. When I tried the disk repair, the message indicated that it could not be repaired. I called support and they suggest that I hook up my mac mini and go into target disk mode. I did this but it wouldn't mount so I wasn't able to move any files. how to retrieve my files and restore my computer?Â
I tried to move a load of unwanted iTunes files to the recycling bin, but missed! They duly loaded onto the desktop, then the computer hung (there were only about 3,000 of them, by the way!) What can I do to put my little baby's desktop right? On a related issue, my recently purchased G5 dual desktop refuses to acknowledge my G4 (which is in firewire 'target disk' mode') I have connected 6 pin to 6 pin.
My toast app wont accept any avi. flies and itunes wont open in the other account i have and iphoto wont open either. How do i restore all my apps to the way they used to be. Oh yeah i'm using the demo if it makes a difference.
I'm a total Windows newbie and I'm having trouble moving programs that I've installed onto Parallels 4.0 into my boot camp partition. Is this even possible?
If so what is the best way to go about quickly accessing programs from the Parallels virtual machine?
My Mac Mini locked up when it was downloading an update. I tried to reload the operating system from the disk shipped with the computer and it would not (said that a newer version had already been installed. So I restored from time machine, but the applications were not being backed up. I have been able to load my propriatary programs, but I cannot get the bundled Apple programs that come with the computer... So I cannot adjust system preferences or time machjine preferences. I have noe dik utility etc. How can I get the basic programs back?
I had purchased the new retina MBP and i used to have a macbook air. I moved all of my files over to my new computer (NOT using migration assistant, wanted a new setup) and i got everything but my keychains. How can i move my internet keychains over? Â BTW, the computer wont let me export internet keychains...Â
I know how to back up programs on PC, but am new to Mac and would like to know about how to best back up programs on my Macbook Pro (purchased second hand) without disks.
I was wondering if there is away to burn full programs thats on my imac. I want to burn them to a cd for a backup just incase I need to reinstall I dont have to go and download them again. Need to burn them off the iMac and make them a full install cd.
I went into system preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver. And then I changed the "Start Screen Saver" option to never, but it said for the others after 10min " Your computer will sleep before your screen saver activates. So will my computer stop downloading a file from the internet if i just leave my computer on over night? How do i change my signature?
I purchased my first Mac ever, the iMac with 3.06ghz, 8GB and 1T.
I LOVE THIS iMac.
Now, I got this iMac to use Protools with plugins. Now I'm only using 3 tracks with virtual instruments and is already asking me to increase CPU usage or remove RTAS(virtual instruments).
Is there a way to chip off CPU usage from other programs that the computer may be using? Anyone has solution except removing some virtual instruments, I mean I got this iMac to work with music.
When I start my iMac, a few programs start along with the computer. I don't want any programs starting by default. I have reviewed the Preferences of these programs, and see nothing to uncheck regarding auto startup. And I don't see anything related to this in System Preferences. How I can start the computer without programs starting with it?
I've been trying to find out how to access google talk/msn/aim on my office computer that has those main websites blocked including [URL]Anybody else have any good suggestions that will allow me to bypass and is pretty secure?
Because simply dragging and dropping it to the new drive just chucks-up a warning box saying "The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled"
I recently loaded Lion on my Imac. I have listed two programs for automatic log-on. But 3 other apps automatically log-on as well (Firefox, Mail, Word), even though they are not on the auto log-on list at all. How do I preven them from logging on when I start the computer?
Just upgraded to a macbook pro and every time i turn on the laptop about four or five programs open. how do i stop this from happening? I have looked in the system preferences and have not been able to find anything?
The hardrive in my late 2006 Macbook 2.0ghz laptop has finally kicked the bucket. I confirmed this with an Apple Genius at my local Apple store after she plugged in an external drive and running disk utility to run a diagnostic. However, I forgot to ask her about some details concerning my time machine backup which resides on an external drive that connects via firewire. I do know that my files and folders should be restored without issues. Although, I'm not sure about the following:Â
1. Will all my non-apple applications / programs be restored?
2. Will my configuration settings for mail be restored?
3. Will my itunes settings be restored (I have an iphone and ipad that connects to itunes)?
4. Will my contacts in address book be restored?Â
I still have the original drive of this laptop which still works just fine and boots up okay (never erased the OS) where the upgraded drive that I installed a few years ago is the one that failed. Therefore, I will be reverting back to the original drive that is smaller and slower.Â
The Genius recommended to run disk utility from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD (I originally had Leopard installed) to format the drive/install the OS and then do a full restore from my time machine backup. Although, I'm not sure if all my programs and settings for certain apps will be restored. I appreciate any help or other optioins I can possibly do to get back my saved files, programs, and settings.
