Mac Pro :: Vista Loses Super Drives In 2008?
Jun 13, 2009
I wonder if this problem has affected anyone in the past but I, for the life of me can not figure it out.
I have re-intstlled Vista Business 64 bit already and have had sucess with the computer recognizing them and I can access them but now I cant access them in the explorer windows or eject them at all.
I have tried to re-install boot camp, tried re-installing the disk drive drivers in control panel but nothing works.

I have VMWARE and Vista ultimate full edition and do NOT have a super drive. Any ideas on how to go about getting Vista to work in VMWARE because it is not recognizing the disc via "Remote Disc" feature

I have a 2010 13" MacBook Pro. I bought a FW800 enclosure for my 500GB Seagate 5400rpm HD. In OSX using Path Finder to test transfer speeds I get around 40MB/s. Pretty good. Not as fast as it should be given the drive and FW800's possible speeds, but acceptable. When I switch over to my boot camp partition with Vista Ultimate installed I get 4MB/s. I can't figure out why I'm getting such slower speeds with Vista. I did the tests using the exact same files. So what am I missing? How can I get the transfer speeds I should be getting in Vista?

I recently installed 64-bit Vista in a Boot Camp partition. Then Parallels and everything is perfect except...
When I insert a DVD now, Windows automatically takes control of the drive. The only way for me to view the contents of that drive is to shut down Vista in Parallels and then reinsert the disk. Then OS X sees it and fires it up.
Now Ive plugged in other devices like my external drive, and I get a little pop up which asks which system I want to use the device with. Is there a way to get that for DVDs as well?

As scattered reports of failing SuperDrives across the Mac lineup continue to grow, Apple has reportedly begun to investigate the matter by contacting at least one user.As first reported by AppleInsider earlier this month, some people have seen their drives fail in a range of Mac models. Numerous users have reported drives that fail to mount discs, particularly with the models "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E" and "HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N," though others reportedly have issues as well. One person, who is a developer, has now said he was contacted by Apple recently regarding the reported SuperDrive failure on his Mac mini. A representative from Apple Developer Relations reportedly told him that the company was investigating the matter.

I installed 2 ne w Optical drives in a 2008 3,1 MacPro Quadcore. After installation and booting up, the system profiler failed to show ANY optical drives and I was unabel to open/eject the drives naturally. I then unplugged the bottom one and rebooted and the top drive (still plugged in ) worked. I then shut down and unplugged the top drive and plugged in the bottom drive - rebooted and now the BOTTOM drive is recognized. When BOTH drives are plugged in , the system fails to show either of them.So when individually plugged in it's fine but when bith are plugged in neither of the drives are detected or operate.Â

I'll be getting a Mac Pro with SAS drives. I will need to run XP64 or Vista (at least in the short term) for the specific application I intend to use.
Questions:
1. I've heard that it is not possible to install either XP64 or Vista if the SAS RAID card is installed. Is this true?
2. If so, can I forgo using the RAID card and the SAS drive for the main system hard drive and instead use a SATA drive - and still install SAS drives in the other slots so I can still get the throughput and rotational speed benefits of them? (I don't need to RAID them.)

I'd love to get an SSD drive if I were to buy a new MBP. However, I need to use bootcamp. Are there any drives out there that work with Bootcamp now?

1) Does Bootcamp properly support Vista 64-bit ? If so how stable is it (don't want any crashes caused by poor drivers - really want rock solid stability under Vista) ?
2) Will the Mac Pro support any SATA hard drive or would I have to buy specific models/brands ?

I have successfully installed Windows Vista Home Premium on my MBA through Boot Camp. I have tried to install the MBA drives from the OS X install disk repeatedly, but without success. The "setup.exe" seems to be working fine, but after restart, Windows does not seem to recognize the Mac drives. Updating the drives manually did not improve the situation. Does anyone know how to install the drives correctly?

Sometime I plug and unplug hard drives of my PC while it is on. Will there be a problem to do that on the Mac Pro? If the computer supports this, do I need an internal drive that is also hot-swappable in order to be safe?

I know that the Vista score thing is pretty useless, but I am curious what mine is. Is there a way to get a Vista score without having to actually buy and install that rubbish?

I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...
Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.

I have a question regarding Time Machine functionality. Here's my situation. I have two hard drives in my Pro: one that operates as a Boot drive, and one for storage. Right now I have Time Machine set up to backup my storage drive, but I was wondering if it was possible to have plug in a second external drive and use it to back up the Boot drive. I searched for a similar thread, but couldn't really find anything. Has anybody successfully done this?

I just unboxed this beauty. This is my first mac ever and I love it so far. However one thing I noticed straight out of the box was how loose the hinges are. The screen tilts if I move the macbook air to a 90 degree angle. I've own quite a few laptops but this is the first one with a loose hinge straight out of the box. Is this normal or should I be meeting with a nerd?

Is there really a "Late 2008" model? If so, what is the difference.I ask because I recently got a MacPro and according to Apple's hardware test, it is an Early 2008.

I just got my 13" (4/128) MacBook Air yesterday, and I decided to use Migration Assistant instead of Setup Assistant - because I didn't want all of my applications to be put on the new Air.
Well, Migration Assistant screwed everything up. I ended having to reinstall iWork (it wouldn't recognize it), had to reset defaults, had to pull off a few files directly from Time Machine, etc.
Well I've got almost everything back to normal - except my Safari bookmarks!
Prior to all of this, I thought I could restore to factory settings using the little Apple stick - but even that was a hassle. It would only reinstall my OS, but it wouldn't erase and install the drive. I could get into Disk Utility, but the "Erase" button was "grayed" out...
Frustrated... if I could just get the Safari bookmarks somehow OR if someone could properly show me how to restore to factory settings (main issue is not being able to Erase and Install)...

I searched the forums but can't seem to find a definitive answer in regards to having a loose hinge on the i7.
I picked mine up yesterday and it seems a little too lose for my liking. It stays in place when it is not touched, but if you push with one finger on the bottom it will switch quite easily.
Is this how they make the hinges now or is mine too loose and should be exhanged? I don't seem to have any problems with dead pixels/yellow screen/noise and would hate to exchange it.

I bought my first mac in February 2012. Ever since the beginning the Internet connection is always dropped. I have to click the wifi logo in the upper right hand corner and click turn wifi-off. I can immediately turn it back on and immediately the connection is fine again.

Problem with Time Capsule acting as a router for home Internet connection. It would lose it's WAN IP address after 5-10 minutes, sometimes longer. Rebooting the Time Capsule would fix it temporarily. Also, renewing the DHCP lease for the Time Capsule using the Airport Utility would bring it back instantly. It's a 500 GB Time Capsule and has 7.4.2 firmware. An update check says that that's the latest. I tried a factory settings reset. At first I thought it helped because it lasted more than 20 minutes afterward. But then did the same thing again.
Some background: Time Capsule faithfully did it's duty at another home for extended period of time without any known issues. At old home it was connected to a different cable modem - an RCA I believe. At the new home it's connected to an Arris modem that provides data and voice. For the first three or four hours it worked without issue, then it started losing it's connection (right about the time I was leaving )
The cable company tech had me believing that I had a glitchy Time Capsule. Now I think I have either a:
- incompatibility between the Time Capsule and the new Arris Telephony cable modem
- network conflict on the cable company's side of things. The Time Capsule was running connected to a different modem at a different address (and account, I believe).
- final choice is a glitchy Time Capsule.
(I first wrote this post on 9/30/10, at that time firmware 7.4.2 was current, now 7.5.2 is latest. I'm attempting to recreate the problem now. This happened at a client's home with their setup - I'm now hooking it up as my main router and using the same Arris Telephony modem. It's been running with my Arris Telephony modem on my Internet connection for over twelve hours without issue).

I just installed iWork 06 but it seems although I have gained a bunch of new transitions I have lost several, and some of them I used often!
Why is this? And is there a way to add the old removed ones from Keynote 2 into keynote 3?
It appears to be:
Burn
One of the Mosaic Flips
Drop
Falling tiles
Grid
Motion Dissolve
Those were good transitions!
And some of the text transitions are lost too. One odd thing I noticed is that if i bring in one of the old Keynote files with the old transitions it adds that old transition to the list!
Below is an attachment of Keynote 2 and 3 transition lists

iTunes is losing the location of files at an alarming rate.
I have my library on a 750gb internal and it's total size is 462gb. Everytime i restart iTunes I have a stack of tracks or movies that have the dreaded exclamation mark next to them. I then spend 20 minutes re linking the files
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening or any potential fixes?

I have an AFP share on my nas box containing many files. My problem is that when I try and to rename files by hitting enter, the finder window refreshes and I lose focus of the file rename. This seems to be happening when finder is refreshing the thumbnails for each file's icon.
How can I stop this very frustrating behavior. This doesn't happen when not using AFP.

When the computer goes to sleep, either on its own or if i tell it to, when i wake it up, it does not recognize my mouse or keyboard. The goofy thing is, the mouse will wake it, but it still does not appear to have any input into the machine once OS X is up and running again.

I thought when you shut down a mbp, that means you power it off completely and no drainage should occur.
Every time I turn off my mbp late at night around 1am and turn it back on in the morning around 10, I seem to lose about 1% charge. I'll have 100% go down to 99% or I'll start off at 99% and in the morning, wake up to see its at 98%.
Also, I recently downloaded the Deep Sleep widget and tried it out. Going into Deep Sleep actually preserved my battery charge at where it was.

I use my iMac for business. So even if the mouse loses connection once a day, that it 1 time too many. Some days it loses connection 2 to 3 times a day. When it does this, I go into system prefs/mouse and it says no mouse found. Sometimes it will find my mouse, then it after searching for a minute or 2, goes back to no mouse found and searching.
Sometimes it finds the mouse and sometimes it does not. Right now, I am using a hard wired mouse. Its been about 5 minutes and its still not finding my apple mouse. In fact, this all started after I replaced the original batteries. The mouse was working flawlessly up until that point. Its a brand new 27" IMac I got Christmas 2011, so its running Lion.
