As you can see in the attachment, the apps I'm running aren't that big of a deal for the most part. This is a 2007 version 8-core Mac Pro, 8 GB RAM. I'm curious what happens to make the apps open bog down the computer like this? Just leaving everything running for days at a time?

From what I have seen it looks like the quad core machines will have 4 slots while the eight core machines have eight slots. How many memory slots are in the hex core machines?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a refurbished Mac Pro (8 core) from the apple store and added 4 Gb (2x2Gb) to the 2 Gb tht came installed. I am having a peculiar problem in seeing all four of the memory modules. The only setup that shows all 6 Gb of the memory is to have the modules in the following format: a) 2Gb modules on Riser A, positions 1 and 3 plus 1 Gb mods on Riser B positions 1 and 3; b) 2 Gb and 1 Gb mods on Riser A positions 1 and 3, respectively, and the same on Riser B.
When I put them in the logically (and aesthetically better) intuitive configuration of paired mods in positions 1 and 2 of each Riser, I can only see the modules that are in position 1 of each riser. Is this something expected in the new MacPros? Is there a disadvantage of keeping this configuration? I note that a memory installation video on line stated that the way memory is installed in the early 2008 Mac Pros has changed. Does this issue result from that change?
my 2.66 ghz Quad Core Mac Pro has 6 gig's of memory. I always have several application's open at the same time. I've got Aperture 2 which is using 632 mb of memory but sometimes it goes over 1gb. Iphoto is using 300 mb, I've got firefox open, the New York Times Reader, Rhapsody's online player, Apple's email client, Itunes, etc. Do you guys think that 6gig's of memory is enough? Is more memory recommended? Would that 2 gig's of memory make a difference?

I've only got 2gb and am running Lion, which slows everything down.I got a 2gb and 4 gb from OWC but the folks at the Genius Bar tell me that the MacBook ishould have no more than 4gb and that the memory slots need to be equal.

Intel's reference documentation of Core i7 indicates that Core i7 does support 1GB/2GB/4GB memory module. Apple does not provide any 4GB memory module option for Quad-Core. Will the Quad-Core support 4GB memory module, or even 8GB?

Everything is fine since except that it can only run with 1 stick of RAM in the lower slot, with both or just the upper filled it doesn't boot and the optical drive sounds like it cant start. My 1 year warranty is out and missed the 2 year upgrade. Also does anyone know if this model can run 1x 2GB of memory? I used to have 1.5GB (came with 1x 512MB and added 1GB) and now been running with just 1 gig and missing the performance albeit a positive is Snow Leopard is a lot more snappy on 1 gig than Leopard .

I have looked on [URL] and the prices range from $198.99 to $799.99 for 8gb (4 x 2gb) kits. The Omni Technologies Optival is mighty tempting at $198.99 and I see that OWC has 8gb for $269. What do you recommend? Is Optival any good? The reason I an adding 8gb is for multi-tasking video/audio etc.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a MBP (i7 2.66ghz, 8gbs ram, 7200rpm hard drive) and since I got it apps seem to temporarily (like for 10-15 seconds) freeze (only 1 at any time normally) and i'll get the spinning beach ball thing. Even if I only have say 1 app open (like safari) it'll hang up for 10 or so seconds randomly. It happens say maybe once or twice every hour (but having said that i've used it hours at once with a lot more than one application open and it hasn't done it) on various apps and I don't know why. Is it normal? I wouldn't think 1 app such as safari or itunes running should do that? It's not a problem(?) that bothers me really, I just want to know if something might be wrong? I've only had the notebook for a week so far and it's my first Mac.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the latest iMac i5 with 4GB of memory; however, 32 bit MS Office and 64 bit MacMail chew up memory like crazy. At this moment, I have less than 1/2 a Gig left. I stopped using Safari because it ate up memory so fast. Chrome is a lot better.I find that I have to restart Office apps and MacMail periodically or else.I didn't have this problem with my old G4 with one GiB of memory.Is this normal or is there something wrong with my iMac?Is there something I should be doing other that quitting MS Word periodically and then rebooting it? Is letting an Office app stay open a no no?

I had my mac over the past 2 years, I filled it up. It got to the point where I only had 12 gbs of memory left. I know it is not good to fill a comp up, but a lot of applications started crashing. I got a 500 gb internal drive thinking this would help, but apps keep crashing, or "not responding". When I "force quit" them and restart them they work but it is annoying to have to keep doing that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI see the numbers of everything from Core 2 Duo, to the slightly faster and cooler Core i3, to the supposedly faster core i5s and i7s. The benchmarks go up accordingly, but I found this does not always equate in a faster experience on most tasks.
Here's my experience so far on processor upgrade:
In one computer trade school re-certification class I am in, we are working with Windows Server 2003 on a Quad Xeon platform and it's incredibly slow.
But in a previous class we had the previous generation server edition on older Xeons, and while not fast, it was much better. On paper the newer multi-core Xeons should have made a difference, but could 2003 server software be that much more bloated than the previous Windows server edition that it would stall like that and make us wish we had the older setup?
I am going to try out the Adobe CS lab and put the new high end Dells to the test there and see if they work better than when we had an older CS version on older Xeon equipped Dells.
I don't know if this is something to do with Dell, or if Apple's increasing processor bumps/generations are going to similarly not make a difference in the speed things appear to go at, whether it's Adobe stuff, server stuff, or anything else that needs power.
I know somebody who plans on a Core 2 Duo, i5 or i7 MBP and I was wondering if the higher end processor is worth it in that case (iMovie being the main program of use).
I did a standard install of Snow Leopard (SL) and everything seemed fine for a while... but I noticed a lot of beachball time, and the computer became more and more unresponsive. I found then that Mail was hanging on me... immediately after start-up it seemed to work fine, but after about three minutes of working I could no longer compose emails, and the panels displaying inbox, or whatever, contents would not display their contents... even though I knew they were not empty! I also tried to quit Mail to refresh it, but found that it was not possible... I had to resort to force-quit Mail. Moreover, if I wanted to shut down Mail would not quit and i had to force quit before I tried to shutdowN... every time! After a few abortive sessions I stopped Mail being a log-in item and found that everything ran fast and smooth UNTIL I loaded Mail... after which the whole of the above scenario would repeat... I then decided to look in Activity Monitor and found that Mail was listing between 90% and 120%+CPU usage!!... even when it was in the background and not being overtly used. When I did manage to quit it, after it had left the desktop and switcher, it was still listing 20% or so CPU usage.
I decided to try a different client, and loaded Thunderbird. Runs great... and so does Snow Leopard all the way round now!! But I don't really want to go over to Thunderbird... I would rather stick to the integration level possible with Mail. I hope that some form of patch will be found to correct this behaviour. (By the way, I have always had some problems with Mail cancelling shutdown even before SL came onto the scene!)
I just installed Snow Leopard and it is running terrribly slow. In the Activity Monitor, UserEventAgent is using 95%-100% off the CPU. What can I do?

Everything is running very, very slowly. In the Terminal, top shows me that process 15, DirectoryService, is using between 45 and 248%(!) of my cpu, and hdiutil is also using much more than I expect. What is causing this, and, more importantly, how can I make it stop. It is making my computer unusable.
It doesn't seem to matter what applications are running or if I have Web Sharing on or off. I suspected it was the flood of attempted logins from having Web Sharing on, but turning it off doesn't make any difference.

I bought a brand new 15" i7 MBP two weeks ago. Today I noticed Finder taking up 375 MB of RAM, somewhat significantly more than anything else running. As of now I still just have the stock 4 GB ram in the machine, and less than 100 MB are free.
I'm not noticing any huge slowdowns so I'm not totally worried about it, I was just surprised to see Finder using so much memory. Is this normal? Is there an easy way to restart Finder?
For the last week, my Mac has been running very slow. Even when I don't have any apps open, it still lags. I opened up Activity Monitor to see what is going on. I see that a root process "AgentDaemon" is taking up almost all my CPU and RAM.
When I try to quit (or force quit) this process in the Activity Monitor, it will go away for a second and then come right back.
Does anyone know what purpose the "AgentDaemon" serves? And why is it hogging all my CPU and RAM?
I installed a new hard drive on my MBP the other day and used migration assistant to transfer from my old drive. Spotlight started indexing and eventually finished, at least I thought it had since I could access the spotlight menu.
For the past two days, however, mds and mdsworker have been hogging my CPU, often taking as much as 90% as shown in the activity monitor. Does this mean that spotlight is still indexing or are these processes somehow stuck? and if they're stuck, how can I fix that? I've rebooted, reset the pram, reset permissions, reset spotlight and even re-imported my files and it just continues and the fan is on a lot despite no activity.
I just opened the console but couldn't find anything related to mds.
Every now and then my 2008 Santa Rosa MacBook w/ 10.5.2 will have it's fan run very fast while nothing is being done. No apps open. No internet traffic. Sometimes it even happens at the login window.
I've run Activity Monitor when this is occurring and found a process called "applet" that runs the CPU at 94%. Quitting this applet results in the CPU activity to drop to a mere 3% - 4% and after about 30 seconds, the fan starts to slow and gradually turns off. Nothing bad happens to the computer after quitting the "applet" process. I have no Microsoft applications on my computer.
