OS X V10.7 Lion :: 1.2 GB Of Memory Being Used With No Apps Running?

Apr 2, 2012

I've been noticing with iStat Pro that out my 8GB of memory, 1.2 GB of it is Active and 1.3 GB is Wired, but when no applications are running. Not even the hidden task bar ones. Then when I start Google Chrome, my Active memory jumps up to 2.4 GB. I'm on a Macbook Pro (thunderbolt gen) with a Core i5 2.3 Ghz, 8 GB memory along with a 500 GB Hard Drive (80% full). I've had my Macbook for almost a year now, and this has become progressively worse.

OS X :: Adding Memory And Then Running The Memory Utility Application?

Mar 21, 2009

I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3

One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.

Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?

Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app

How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

OS X :: MS Office Apps Eating Up Memory?

Jun 2, 2010

I have the latest iMac i5 with 4GB of memory; however, 32 bit MS Office and 64 bit MacMail chew up memory like crazy. At this moment, I have less than 1/2 a Gig left. I stopped using Safari because it ate up memory so fast. Chrome is a lot better.I find that I have to restart Office apps and MacMail periodically or else.I didn't have this problem with my old G4 with one GiB of memory. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my iMac?Is there something I should be doing other that quitting MS Word periodically and then rebooting it? Is letting an Office app stay open a no no?

As you can see in the attachment, the apps I'm running aren't that big of a deal for the most part. This is a 2007 version 8-core Mac Pro, 8 GB RAM. I'm curious what happens to make the apps open bog down the computer like this? Just leaving everything running for days at a time?

OS X :: Memory Filled Up - Apps Started Crashing

Apr 28, 2009

I had my mac over the past 2 years, I filled it up. It got to the point where I only had 12 gbs of memory left. I know it is not good to fill a comp up, but a lot of applications started crashing. I got a 500 gb internal drive thinking this would help, but apps keep crashing, or "not responding". When I "force quit" them and restart them they work but it is annoying to have to keep doing that.

Mac Mini :: Running Out Of Application Memory?

Apr 24, 2012

I have had terrible problems with my Mac Mini. Apple has replaced the hard drive twice, the SATA cable once and the optical drive once in the first year I've had it. After the latest installation of Lion, I have had repeated problems with the error "Your Mac OS x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." This is false -- I have less than half of my 500 GB in use and 4 GB of wired memory.

I believe that Safari is always running when I get this error. Also, I cannot cleanly quit Safari -- I always must force quit, b/c it hangs when I quit. The last time I got this message, Safari was using 1.26 GB of memory.

My System Memory report is all out of whack:

VM size: 221.25 GB
Page ins: 1.59 GB
Page outs: 40.15 GB
Swap used: 59 GB

This is after only 1 or 2 days of uptime. I have just a couple of weeks left on my Apple Care and am desperate to know if this is hardware problem requiring my 5th trip to the Genius Bar or if this some kind of software problem that I can fix.

On this latest Lion install, I did a clean install with no settings or applications, and I killed extensions on Safari.

Mac Pro :: Running Various Apps - Need Best Speed

Jan 25, 2009

I started video ages ago but the monumental moment was the switch to mac. I started with a 20" Al. iMac with 4 gigs of ram. Started off okay as I was still doing standard definition. Then I went hi-def and I fall asleep during rendering times. It's time to go pro. I will be getting a 8 core 2.8ghz mac pro with 32 gigs ram and 512 video card (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB). What I am asking you guys is what hard drive set up (Solid state and Normal Hard drive) will help accelerate the rendering time?

Here's what I think:
Drive 1: SSD 80gig
used for OS & Apps
Drive 2: SSD 250gig
Used for CURRENT project of the week. Used to read info.
Drive 3: 10k RPM drive 500-1000gig
Scratch Disk for writing/rendering projects
Drive 4: Storage

Keep in mind that I also use shake, quake, logic 8, PS3, and crunch a lot of DVD's to video.

OS X :: Running Applications Directly From Memory Stick?

I am just wondering if it would be possible to run a game off of a USB memory stick. The game is approximately 600mb and very old (fallout 2 for mac), and I have very little computer knowledge. I'm used to PCs, but even then I'm no whiz. I absolutely cant install the game to my hard drive, as my flat-mate, who owns the computer is very touchy about me installing things or using memory.

Software :: PowerMac Dual 2.0 G5 Running Out Of RAM / Not Enough Memory

Jul 19, 2009

I am running a PowerMac Dual 2.0 G5 with the latest updated version of Tiger. I have maxed out the RAM to 8GB and upgraded the original video card to support my 30" display. I use a helper applications called "Free RAM". This program basically calculates what RAM you have available.

I am a graphic designer and need to run Quark Xpress 7, InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator (CS4 with latest updates) simultaneously. On top of these 4 I also run Mail, Safari, Acrobat Professional, Extensis Suitcase X and iBiz (time management). These programs are all running all the time.

After launch and all apps running, everything is great. I have 2.95 GB of RAM still free (Free RAM). As the day goes by, and I have opened and closed numerous files this amount of free RAM dwindles and eventually I am left with 96 mb of RAM just before the CPU says "Enough is enough!" and everything grinds to a halt. Now previously I was running CS2 and I never ran into this issue. The problem started when I upgraded to CS3. Now with CS4 I am seeing the issue almost daily.

Now comes the question... Is the issue simply outdated hardware? Or, do I have a software issue.I am afraid to purchase a new CPU in the attempts to remedy this problem. If, in fact it is only a software issue. I find it strange that after a restart I have almost 3GB of RAM available. And yet as the day goes by I run out of RAM. I understand that as I open files more RAM will be used to support the open file. However, after the file is closed the RAM should free-up and be available again.

MacBook :: Running Hot With HP Photosmart Apps

Feb 27, 2009

my White (early 2008) MacBook 4.1 is struggling to run HP Photosmart Studio, an app that was bundled with the HP C4280 which came with my MacBook. (spec = 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 17GB remaining on the hard disc). With the app open and not being used for anything I am getting the following temperature readings:

CPU Core A: 71 (degrees C)

CPU Core B: 71

Main Heatsink 1: 58

Main Heatsink 2: 58

Enclosure Bottomside: 26

The cooling fans are running noisy (5500 rpm).

My house temperature is cool (think winter in the UK).

When I try to edit a scanned image (even a credit card sized image scanned as a JPEG at 200 dpi) the software often freezes for at least half an hour before I have to Force Quit.

I haven't had the MacBook misbehave before when running iMovie, iDVD and other intensive apps. I have downloaded the latest version of Photosmart from HP's website and the problem remains.

Also, I have a 1.66 GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM Mac Mini that doesn't seem to have the same problem, although I haven't pushed it as hard I have the MacBook.

OS X :: Apps Running Faster In Snow Leopard?

Aug 31, 2009

Last night I installed the new Snow Leopard hoping to see an improvement in some of the programs I use (Photoshop, LR, Flash, AE etc) but I dont think any of these programs other than Safari, Finder and all those built-in applications in OSX benefited from this new 64-bit code, at least I havent seen any improvements in fact I went and checked the Activity Monitor and I dont see the 64-bit in any of these programs.

Was this supposed to benefit all programs speed wise or the program itself should be 64-bit compatible?

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Reinstall Bundled Apps After Running Recovery

Apr 28, 2012

I previously had Lion installed and decided to wipe my Mac and re-upgrade to Lion. So, I've both zapped the parameter RAM and erased the hard drive, then done a fairly normal install of Snow Leopard. It successfully goes through this process, using my recovery disc, I get through Apple's initial "out-of-box experience" including setting up a user account, and get to the desktop.

There are no issues to this point, no errors, etc. However, having put in the bundled apps DVD, when I run the installer, I get the error: "There were errors with the installation. The installation failed. An unknown error occurred. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." I have repeatedly gotten this error. I have both done a simple reformat of my HDD and a "write zeros" option.

Also, I have tried this before and after doing any software updates. I've also used the Apple Hardware Test which says there were no problems. Disk Utility shows S.M.A.R.T. status as verified, hard drive formatting takes a normal amount of time, and there are no other symptoms of any kind. The unit is stock, and there is nothing attached except for the AC adaptor. The only thing I haven't done yet is do the Lion upgrade, but honestly I shouldn't have to do that just to reinstall the bundled apps.

I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage. The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my

MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.

I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Using 2 GB Of Memory?

Mar 20, 2012

My iMac have been working fine until today.

There was a lot of stuff in the Software Upgrade tool that I recently installed (today). I worked for about half an hour until I noticed that the computer was extremly slow - so I looked in the Activity Monitor. I saw that Finder was using 2 GB of "real memory". So I restarted Finder.

After about 1 minute Finder was consuming 2 GB of real memory again. So i restarted my computer.  After about 1 minute Finder was consuming 2 GB of memory - again. Currently Finder is using 1.71 GB of memory.  What can I do? I can't work with a computer this slow, Also - can I shut down Finder completly so that it doesn't restart?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: See What Processes Are Using The Memory?

Apr 25, 2012

I recently added more RAM to my system and I always keep Activity Monitor running with the memory usage icon on the Dock to see how much Lion and my programs use. I noticed that even several CS5 programs running at the same time won't use that much, the program I've seen uses the most is Aperture, using anywhere from 500MB on start to 2.5GB while viewing--not editing--photos.

My questions is, when my system is running normally it uses from a quarter to half the total memory available but just now it's using more than three quarters and it's running not even half programs I use everyday. I quickly added up the memory being used and it's just missing out A LOT. I'm adding a screenshot of Activity Monitor for you to see.

I now that restarting the system (or by using the purge command in Terminal) will free up memory but this really puzzles me and I'd really like to know what's happening--BTW, even though several GB are missing, the computer is nowhere nears slow, at least. Where are all the other processes using the rest of the memory? I'm using OS X 10.7.3 Server with 16GB of RAM on an iMac.
