Currently have 4GB of ram in the iMac.

What would 8GB do with regards to performance within OSX and Win7 64Bit

The iMac is a i3 3.2GHZ

I play SC2 and TF2 in OSX and Win7.

I can get this [URL]

so i'll keep the 2 x 2GB already in the machine and just add another 2 x 2GB sticks for 50

Or am I wasting my money ?

Intel Mac :: Core Duo 216GHz Memory Upgrade?

Mar 11, 2012

I have 20" iMac core duo 216GMZ w/ 1GB and want to upgrade memory, how much can I install?  Have 2 512MB DIMM.  Does the new RAM have to be same memory capacity for both DIMM?  I wanted to upgrade from 10.6.8 to Lion and don't have enough memory which prompted the inquiriy.  The Lion installer said I need to have min 4GB.  How much memory in excess of 4GB is advisable for Lion to be a smooth running OS.

Mac Pro :: 2 X 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon Memory Upgrade?

Oct 7, 2008

I would like to upgrade the memory on my mac pro to 8gb (4 x 2gb) plus the original 2gb (2 x 1gb) that comes standard for a total of 10gb. I have looked on [URL] and the prices range from $198.99 to $799.99 for 8gb (4 x 2gb) kits. The Omni Technologies Optival is mighty tempting at $198.99 and I see that OWC has 8gb for $269. What do you recommend? Is Optival any good? The reason I an adding 8gb is for multi-tasking video/audio etc.

Mac Pro :: Upgrade 2009 Mac Pro 3.33GHz To 2010 6 Core 3.33GHz?

Jul 28, 2010

I read that the new 6 core Mac Pro's use 32nm technology.

I guess this means a different mobo to the one in the 2009 4 core models?

Apple are offering an upgrade from 4 core to 6 core on the new models, so I'm wondering if I could do the same to my 2009 model or would it not be as simple to swap out the mobo as I think?

IMac :: Upgrade To 2010 For SSD Potential?

Oct 23, 2010

I very recently purchased a refurb late 2009 27 inch i7 iMac. It is more computer than I currently need. I do have one concern that SSD is supposedly much faster than a conventional hard drive and although a solid state drive is now pretty pricey, they will come down in price and I suspect become more mainstream over the next couple of years.

Does it make any sense to consider swapping my computer for a late 2010 i7 refurb (+ $200) so that I have an upgrade path to SSD in the future?

IMac :: 27" I5 (late 2010) RAM Upgrade?

Nov 14, 2010

I've got a 27" imac i5, with 4 RAM slots. I do actually have 2x2Gb installed, but that's not enough to run windows 7 smoothly with Parallels.

I would like to upgrade the RAM. Can I buy 1x4Gb now, and add another 1x4Gb later? (short on money at the moment...)

The two original modules are installed in BANK 0/DIMM0 and BANK 1/DIMM0. Should I install the new module in any free slot available?

Another question: is this memory fine?

I read some topics about ram upgrade, but it's not clear wether you can add one single module...melagodo

IMac :: 2.4 20" Freezes After Memory Upgrade

Feb 25, 2009

I recently got the 2.4 20" iMac. Since a lot of people recommended Crucial for the memory upgrade. I went ahead and ordered 4GB from Crucial. I had my iMac for about 1 week before I put in the new memory. I never noticed it freezes on me at all before I put in the memory. After I put in the memory, it intermittently freezes and there's nothing I can do except hold down the I/O button to turn it off. It would freeze for no reason, but I noticed it freezes often when I used Handbrake to rip a DVD or even when I'm in Numbers doing just usual stuff. Finally today I put back the 1GB that the iMac came with, and so far, Handbrake is going OK. Could the new Crucial memory be bad? Should I call them up and ask for a replacement or return? Has anyone had this problem?

Mac Pro :: Upgrade Base Dual 2.4GHz Quad Core To Dual 2.93GHz Hex Core

Oct 3, 2010

I'm just going to order a new Mac Pro and noticed that it was slightly cheaper to order the base dual processor model and buy the 2.93GHz hex cores myself. A couple of questions arise:

Will my AppleCare still be valid or will I have to keep the 2.4GHz Xeons if I need to return it to Apple for any reason?

Is there market for the 2.4GHz processors?

Can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz processors or will this not work?

Anyone else had trouble option booting with a 2010 Mac Pro? Can't get to startup manager. All I get is a blank screen. Apple says it must be a hardware problem after having me test everything else. Keyboard checks out. Can boot from install disk holding C key, but cannot change startup disk with prefs to install dvd or to a cloned drive. Have reinstalled SL 10.6.4 from install disk. Zapped pram and unplugged power, held power button 5-10 secs. and plugged in again - to reset computer according to apple tech.

Mac Pro :: Swapping A 2009 10.6.5 Drive To A 2010 6-core?

Nov 12, 2010

So my question is -- do you know if this would be an issue swapping drives from a 2009 Mac Pro to a 2010 running 10.6.5 on the drive? Is there an OS performance hit running the 10.6.5 from the 2009's drive on the 2010 Mac Pro?

The reason I ask is because I am upgrading to a 3.33GHz 6-core, it's ordered and on the way. When it comes, I would just like to swap my SSD from my 2009 to the 2010 (running 10.6.5) and hope that everything runs OK. I don't want to have to re-install the new OS X build from the system disks and then update it, I would like it just to work correctly on the new Mac Pro.

I'll also use it for photography/video (GIMP, and stepping into Aperture and Final Cut Express).

I've ruled out an iMac because I want plenty of expansion options.

I know Xcode scales linearly depending on the number of cores but I am trying to look for a sweet spot in performance and budget. I want something I can grow with for a few years (i.e 3-4).

MacBook Pro :: Constant Hard Freezes: 2010 2.66 GHz Core I7, OS X 10.7.3?

Feb 24, 2012

Starting today my 2010 Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7, OS X 10.7.3 (8 gigs ram) has experienced 4 "hard freezes" where the system locks up, itunes plays the same second of audio over and over, and nothing works (keyboard, trackpad, etc.. all frozen). You can't even make the caps lock key light up. This requires you to hold down the power button to reset. Obviously I'm very concerned that this is a hardware failure... or something is getting too hot. The thing is I'm not doing anything that crazy, no games or tons of programs open.

IMac :: Quad Core I5 OR Base Model Core I3?

Jul 28, 2010

I know other threads exist, but they don't have responses specific to me so what's the harm in one more?

So, I am going to be selling my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro this week to get a new 27" iMac and I just need some legitimate advice from those "in the know" on processors.

I plan on having this iMac for about 3 years to do the following tasks:

1.) Record and edit HD cable (1080i) from an Elgato EyeTV HD - will include some encoding of 2+ hour sports game recordings

2.) Some light editing of 720p iPhone 4 clips in iMovie

3.) Surf the web, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, and all the other standard stuff

Assuming budget is an issue, would you recommend me spending the extra money for a Quad Core i5 iMac or would I be ok based on the info above just going with the base Dual Core i3 model?

Like, will there be a considerable difference in the two machines (factoring in processor and graphics card) that will really be worth the extra $300 - $400 for 3 years of use?
