Mac Pro :: OS X 10.5.3 And Beyond Increases CPU Power Draw?
Sep 3, 2009
I've got another ongoing thread (2006 Mac Pro Elevated CPU Temps) where I've been attempting to determine why my 2006 Mac Pro was running so much warmer than I recall at time of purchase By sheer luck, I seem to have stumbled on the cause... when I first noticed it, I was running 10.5.7 with the CPUs idling around 130F or so... as noted in that thread, I tried all sorts of things such as cleaning the dust out, reapplying the thermal paste, etc... all of which had no impact... for an unrelated issue, I decided to re-install OS X 10.5 base version and I was shocked to discover my CPU temps back down in the mid-90s F

I have found that by plugging in my Apogee Duet firewire audio interface and ONLY WHEN AppleFWAudio was loaded there was a 10c CPU raise that was making my MBP (late 2008) hot!I wanted to monitor the power that was required for Duet to run and to see if the temperature rise was due to that, so:With Apogee drivers uninstalled (just to be sure its not their drivers related, which is notMBP on battery power with System Profiler opened (to monitor the mA required by the computer from System Profiler -> Power)

I have an 14" iBook, 1.07 GHz and it won't use battery power. As soon as I unplug it it turns off. It worked fine until I opened it up and swapped in a DVD-RW and a new hard drive (the old one was failing). In the power section of system profiler it shows 98 load cycles and about a 75% remaining capacity. It may or may not be charging - I can't tell. The battery says it's fully charged at 95% and I have no way to drain it and see if it will recharge because the computer won't drink from the battery. I had another 14" iBook battery laying around that I thought worked, but now when I put it in this computer it just sits at 0% then eventually says the battery is dead (the menu icon shows an X through it).

This is a problem that's been bugging me now for a while: when I plug in my iPhone or even a measly Usb Flash drive into my Apple Keyboard's USB port, a message appears on my Mac's screen saying: "A USB device can't draw enough power to operate properly. If the device came with a power cord, plug it into an electrical outlet. Otherwise, connect the device to a USB port on your computer." Does anyone know why the Apple Keyboard has a weird indented USB connector?

i just recently got a keyboard i had back and plugged it in with a mouse i typically use all the time. when the keyboard was plugged in i got the typical message for "USB device drawing too much power, has been disabled…" i just want to re enable the mouse. it was quite obvious it was the combination of BOTH devices that caused this, but i'd really like to just get the mouse working again. I've Tried Resetting the SMC and ran the diagnostic but nothing has worked.

I don't know much about RAM and how it really works but here's my question: (i have new unibody 13" MBP w/ 4GB RAM) When i do a fresh restart i have anywhere up to 2.5-3GB free with basically NO applications open. But as time passes, web browsing, sleep, etc the amount of free RAM available goes down to <2GB even when i exit all apps...
1. Is this typical? What's the explanation for RAM being eaten up over time? Is it advisable to do a fresh restart every couple days or so just to free up RAM again?
2. Is it even common with 4GB of RAM for half (2GB) of it to be used all the time? (I'm guessing yes, but just wondering what's the explanation) For those who only have 2GB of RAM, do they always have 1GB being used? Or would even those 2GB's always be taken up?

I'm using a 2.5" GHz early '08 MacBook Pro and it's running fine. When I'm on Windows, the temperature increases and reaches around 63 celsius but that's normal as I've been told here. When I am on Macintosh, the temperature is usually around 46 to 51 celsius when running on AC power, and lower when on battery. Thing is, I have smcFanControl and I set both fans to 2825 rpm. What is the best speed that I should set them to? This is my computer's temprature - [URL] I won't post it as an image because it's too big to fit the screen and will make the page look ridiculous.

why Toast Titanium increase file size? I'm trying to put a few episodes of an anime onto a regular DVD disc. Now the file is 563.1MB, but when I put it in Toast in the DVD-Video section, it tells me that 1.99GB on 1 disc.

So my macbook pro (2011 late model) has the fan speed of around 2000 rpm during the normal use.Â
Then, when I connect it with a Thunderbolt display (with an ethernet cable for internet), the fan speed is increased to 3200-4000 rpm suddenly.Â
I just don't understand how connecting to a display alone will increase the need for cooling that significantly.Â

The processor temperatures for my new Macbook Pro 2010 i7 is pretty extreme.
Web browsing/listening to music: 65-70 degrees Celsius
Games: Team Fortress 2 (boot camp), Modern Warfare 2 (boot camp), etc. etc. 78-83 degrees Celsius on processor
Encoding a video from avi to mp4 or encoding a dvd: 83-89 Celsius
When the machine gets to temperatures above 73 degrees, I can't hold my fingers at the aluminum part above the function keys. I can deal with this since its only when I do intensive work, but I do intensive stuff pretty often. I'm primarily worried about if the machine will be damaged/the aluminum will burn off or something...
Otherwise, I'm fine with it being hot.
oh yea also, my fan ramps up to 6000 rpm when I play games. I play games for about 2-3 hours a day. will the fan wear out?

Just got it today. When I sleep it, a quiet but audible noise kicks off that increases and decreases in intensity with the light on the front of the unit gets brighter and dimmer (so sort of sinusoidal). I've tried restarting it and resetting the SMC. The unit got upgraded to 4Gb ram and a 7200 320gb hard drive today. But I don't believe it's the hard drive - that makes a very low key monotonous whine that stops when I sleep the unit.

I just got my first MacBook and just draining the battery for the first time (seems to be something like 5-6 hours while surfing and playing music via the speakers, so far I'm quite happy). But I've noticed that the 330m is running all the time due to Skype. I checked with gfxCardStatus and when I close Skype the battery time increases nearly an hour.

I remember when I was growing up that computers had screensavers that would draw a picture over time. I was not sure if there was something out there for Snow Leopard that did that now a days. I tried to do a google search on it, but so many things were ads or they cost money or the description I tried to give was giving me the wrong results. If someone has a link to such a screensaver or can tell me where I might find one.

I'm trying to find out how to use the application "Grapher", but I find it difficult! It's easy for me to draw the graph by telling the program which equation I want it to draw, but I don't know how to and whether it is possible to draw something manually in the graph, for example the slope.

I have a Mac Pro with 4 monitors; I've been using it for a couple of years now, with no problem. Over the last few months, I've noticed that after a while, screen redraws (like after I move a window) get completely messed up. Remarkably, this is visible to screengrab, so you can see what it looks like here: url...it's worst on one of the monitors, but does happen on one of the others.Usually going to Dashboard and back clears it up, but not always. Also, a weird thing affects Firefox - the window contents go completely black sometimes. Sometimes moving it to a different monitor makes it show up again, and sometimes not.I've had one of the video cards replaced (the one running the monitors where this happens most often) but it's still happening. And it's not consistent enough so that if I taker the machine to Apple, they'd have to work on it for weeks maybe to see this behavior. [code]

I need to 'draw' a 'top down' view plan of a room in my house.
I think I could use Microsoft Visio on my XP laptop, but I want to be able to do it on my iMac. Any suggestions of applications that will enable me to do this?

Googled/searched the forums for this, didn't find a whole lot.Found this --> http://tenonedesign.com/sketch.php, which seems cool/accurate for only $15. But what I'm wondering is what app this uses to capture the input. Is there another app that just lets me use my finger?

I'm running 10.9.4 on a Macbook Pro 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM. Finder has stopped drawing windows correctly. If I am in Finder and chose New Window in the Archive Meny, a new Window opens, but I don't see anything. Well, I can see something, I see the outlines of the window, the icons at the top and stuff in at the left of the window like favorites, drives, shared network drives, but the I don't see the actual files in the newly opened window.Â
The windows opens, but I only see what's behind the Finder window. For instance, If I open a new Finder window (like Documents) on top of Safari where I write this post, I'll not see documents but this text I'm writing. I've tried restarting the computer to no avail. I have tried resetting NVRAM/PRAM without success. Thinking if there perhaps is a plist file for this, but I don't know.

It started recently, and I've had this Mac Pro (10.6) for several years. Sometimes, when I move a window, it doesn't redraw the screen *under* it properly, leaving my screen completely messed up. Activating Dashboard (temporarily) fixes it (causes a correct re-draw of everything), and sometimes taking a screengrab fixes it - the display looks correct underneath the area I am selecting for screengrab. A reboot fixes it also, for a while. Sometimes a Firefox window goes completely black, for some seconds, then comes back; haven't noticed that for any other programs' windows. I have 4 monitors connected to this Mac and a bunch of internal drives, but everything was very stable until recently.

My girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

I had a bad power surge (USB hub that was plugged into the back of the display had the wrong power cord plugged in... very stupid mistake I know!!) take out my 23" Cinema Display. The display shows no sign of life (no power light, etc) and the brick has been tested and is OK. My local service place says that they will have to send the display back to Apple which means a minimum of $400 for repair so I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar issue that they resolved successfully? The service place suggested that Apple would replace the logic board but is there any way to test to see if this is the main issue? I have seen logic boards sold separately online but would be hesitant to buy it without know that this would fix this issue.

I made this a new topic because I think it is important enough to do so. Probably most of those that originally complained about this have moved on to the new MacPro but I am sure there are still enough G5 owners out there that still have concerns about this topic.
A clean install of Leopard eliminates the infamous power supply beeping
Its amazing, my G5 is like a new machine; no more of the annoying power supply beep; although, I learned to live with it after a while and didn't even notice it. However, the silence is now very noticeable.

a friend recently gave me a g5 power mac that had some issues, and the failure was described as intermittant. The machine supposedly would work properly when booted and start freezing up after time, but if turned on the next day it would work properly for some time. I assumed it was an overheating issue, but apperently there is more to the picture. I have tried booting the machine quite a few times and the display always reads no signal. The machine sounds as if it were booting normally, but there is not output. At first I assumed it was my display cable, which was a DVI-D single link, however the DVI-D dual link cable leads to the same result. Is it nessicary to have a DVI-I cable? None of the error LEDs light up on the motherboard. After doing some hunting I haven't found anyone with the same issue, but I am wondering if I should assume the graphics card is dead. What steps do I need to take to isolate a graphics card failure in a power mac g5?
