I'm running an 8,1 MacBook Pro and just upgraded to 10.7.4. While idle, my CPU temperature now stands at around 180 degrees Fahrenheit and my fan runs at 4000+ rpm.

I'm using a 2.5" GHz early '08 MacBook Pro and it's running fine. When I'm on Windows, the temperature increases and reaches around 63 celsius but that's normal as I've been told here. When I am on Macintosh, the temperature is usually around 46 to 51 celsius when running on AC power, and lower when on battery. Thing is, I have smcFanControl and I set both fans to 2825 rpm. What is the best speed that I should set them to? This is my computer's temprature - [URL] I won't post it as an image because it's too big to fit the screen and will make the page look ridiculous.

When the machine gets to temperatures above 73 degrees, I can't hold my fingers at the aluminum part above the function keys. I can deal with this since its only when I do intensive work, but I do intensive stuff pretty often. I'm primarily worried about if the machine will be damaged/the aluminum will burn off or something...
Otherwise, I'm fine with it being hot.
oh yea also, my fan ramps up to 6000 rpm when I play games. I play games for about 2-3 hours a day. will the fan wear out?
So my macbook pro (2011 late model) has the fan speed of around 2000 rpm during the normal use.Â
Then, when I connect it with a Thunderbolt display (with an ethernet cable for internet), the fan speed is increased to 3200-4000 rpm suddenly.Â
I just don't understand how connecting to a display alone will increase the need for cooling that significantly.Â
After upgrading to Lion my Imac is considerably slow to the point where some apps are not usable. Several seconds of latency for some commands where I did not notice anything before

Just recently bought a MBP and noticed how hot it will be when I am running WoW. (I saw it reach 100 degrees on istat.) after searching through the forums, I just downloaded smcFancontrol. Problem is, I have no idea what is an ideal temperature/fan speed. Basically, I have 3 questions:
1) Is there a max temperature the MBP should run at?
2) If I use smcFancontrol, should I use it at max setting (6200rpm) to keep my temperature down to the ideal temperature?
3) If I use a leather casing (Macally) for my MBP, would it seriously impair the MBP in terms of cooling?
New to Macs but loving it so far. I see postings about checking fan speeds and cpu temp but cant find anywhere on the mac to check these issues. Is there software on the macbook air to check these or is this separate software?

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded my macbook pro from Snow leopard 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.2, after upgrading I instantly installed the software updates and now my version is 10.7.4. However the i noticed the computer was getting hot fast and im sure its not a problem with the indexing and spotlight because that finished hours ago. Please help, do not want to melt my computer down. Before on snow leopard istat detects my temperature as 30 degrees celcius to 40 when im just surfing on firefox, now on lion istat shows 60-70 when only firefox is open and 50+ when nothing is open.

I downloaded and installed Temperature Monitor and iMac Fan Control - mainly for observational purposes and not for toying around with the fan speeds and I've got some questions. Mind you, I haven't tampered at all with the fan speed settings, just installed Fan Control. Here are my readings (while browsing the internet with Safari and doing a chat via iChat):
Fan Speeds:
CPU fan (desired) 1300 RPM / (current) 1530 RPM
HD fan (desired) 2100 RPM / (current) 2099 RPM
DVD fan (desired) 1300 / 1298 RPM
Temperatures:
CPU Heatsink: 92F

Are these, under the circumstances, normal readings?

I don't know much about RAM and how it really works but here's my question: (i have new unibody 13" MBP w/ 4GB RAM) When i do a fresh restart i have anywhere up to 2.5-3GB free with basically NO applications open. But as time passes, web browsing, sleep, etc the amount of free RAM available goes down to <2GB even when i exit all apps...
1. Is this typical? What's the explanation for RAM being eaten up over time? Is it advisable to do a fresh restart every couple days or so just to free up RAM again?
2. Is it even common with 4GB of RAM for half (2GB) of it to be used all the time? (I'm guessing yes, but just wondering what's the explanation) For those who only have 2GB of RAM, do they always have 1GB being used? Or would even those 2GB's always be taken up?
I've currently got a 2008 unibody 2:53 MBP and am seriously considering selling it to get the smaller 13 inch machine. Easier portability and tons better battery are the reasons for my considering the downgrade. Playing with the machines in my nearby Apple store, I'm getting the impression that the 13 inch machines are running much hotter than their 15 inch counterparts. Is this the case?
Also, how usable are apps like Final Cut Pro and Photoshop on the smaller 13 inch screen? 15 inches barely seems like enough for these kinds of programs.
I purchased my laptop near the end of last year and and over the past couple of days it appears to be considerably slower sometimes than what it usually is. I don't know if i have a virus and have CLAM XAV anti virus to scan. I have 3 users but my memory is nowhere near full so....

I've recently noticed that my iTunes is lagging. Here's my situation: I swapped out the stock HDD for a 500GB 5400RPM drive. I have about 98GB free on the drive. Whenever I open iTunes (my library is 235GB), it lags considerably more than it used to. Is this because the size of the library and the speed of the drive? Is there anything I could do to alleviate this problem? I have 2GB of RAM, should I upgrade to 4GB?

For example as I am writing this Temperature Monitor is saying My CPU A is 46.8C and CPU B is 46.7C. In iStat it says CPU A is 55C and CPU B is 54C. Which is right!?

I just got my first MacBook and just draining the battery for the first time (seems to be something like 5-6 hours while surfing and playing music via the speakers, so far I'm quite happy). But I've noticed that the 330m is running all the time due to Skype. I checked with gfxCardStatus and when I close Skype the battery time increases nearly an hour.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a iTunes library in my external firewire 800 hard drive that I have been using on my 2010 Macbook Pro. The songs have never had any issues with lag. However today, the iTunes is playing but the songs lag, and stop sound altogether...yet the play button is on. It jerks back and forth with the sound, so basically I can't play my songs any more. I checked the monitor activity, and everytime the sound swithces off when songs are playing, the read activity spikes up and sometimes the write activity peaks too. Just now, I stopped the music, yet based on the ACtivity monitor the real memory ram on iTunes is a crazy 1 gigabyte, with CPU at 98% activity. I had previously zapped pram on restart thinking its a ram issue but its still having the persistant play/no sound lags. It comes back on after 20 seconds and then stops sound again. I have max upgrade to 8GB of ram on my macbook pro. I usually have iTunes, Firefox, Photoshop and illustrator opened and I still have sufficient ram. Now checking, with just itunes and firefox opened and no songs are playing, I only have 500mb ram left. I can't open Photoshop and Indesign now. Why is my system using so much ram for only 2 apps on which don't usually take up this much of my ram?

So my Mac Pro has been incredibly slow as of late. It's an older model, but it's been holding strong for a while. For some reason though, it seems the hard drives inside of it had been spinning wildly and at random times.
It took me five minutes to shut down Safari, TextWrangler, Final Cut Studio 3 and iChat. Ridiculous.
I had remembered that when I put in Boot Camp, I had pulled out my additional HDs, so I figured, why not, lets try that.
I removed the three additional drives. (Drive 2 was my WinXP bootcamp, Drives 3 and 4 are both media/backup drives)
Low and behold, once I booted up with just the primary my Mac Pro is screaming again. (The good way this time.) Everything loads faster. It's like night and day with and without the drives in.
Anyone have any clue as to why this would be? All my captured stuff is on my 3rd and 4th drives, so I need them in there, but the click-beachball-click-beachball has got to stop.
why Toast Titanium increase file size? I'm trying to put a few episodes of an anime onto a regular DVD disc. Now the file is 563.1MB, but when I put it in Toast in the DVD-Video section, it tells me that 1.99GB on 1 disc.

Used iChat - transfer took about three hours but it got there.Before the transfer her laptop was very quick - didn't have much installed, plenty of free space. After the transfer, the laptop still have a lot of free space (>100GB) but is very slow. Before the laptop would take maybe 1 minute to boot up.. now it's over three. She experiences bouncing beach balls when loading applications.

When I sleep it, a quiet but audible noise kicks off that increases and decreases in intensity with the light on the front of the unit gets brighter and dimmer (so sort of sinusoidal). I've tried restarting it and resetting the SMC. The unit got upgraded to 4Gb ram and a 7200 320gb hard drive today. But I don't believe it's the hard drive - that makes a very low key monotonous whine that stops when I sleep the unit.

But why is it that when I'm on Facebook on either Opera or Safari? My temp hits 80c. I've called up the Mac Store here in Ireland. They asked me to use iStat Pro to find out my temperatures. So I have, and all my temperatures are fine (around 30-50c) but my CPU temperature is hitting 80c.Honestly, this is quite scary to see that a computer I've bought hits 80c when I browse the internet?
