Mac Pro :: Low Level Formatting - Repairs On Mac?
May 12, 2010
Is it possible to low level format some drives on a Mac? Seems Seagate doesn't have any disctools for Mac, it's all PC... Incase anyone is wondering... I did try it on the PC but there seems to be some oddities, the Seagate drive I'm trying to fix won't play ball with the WD system drive You'd think in this day and age, there wouldn't be any compatibility issues, right?
So... As a last resort, would it be possible to do HD repairs via a Mac either in Snow Leopard or via VMware and Winblowz?

I have a vanilla macbook, and I upgraded the hard drive. Now that school's out (briefly), I want to send it in to get the broken CD drive replaced. I have two questions. One, will Apple refuse to repair the CD drive if they notice I have the new hard drive in there? Second, will they format my hard drive? I haven't had to send a mac in for service before, but I figure if they are gonna format my drive, I can swap hard drives faster than I can restore from Time Machine when it gets back.

Since I got my macbook pro - latest release i have had to repair the HDD 3 times. I am a new mac user so am unsure if this is common or too often? I never had to do such a thing with any PC so it worried me after a week of use that i was told "repair disk using mac os x cd". can anyone clarify thanks? Also just as a side note my screen flickers occasionally and stays black for a few seconds is this the power invertor in the screen?

my iMac has been running strong for about 9 months now. The only gripe i have had is that is has begun to get SLOW booting up and mundane tasks such as opening apps. iTunes takes a good minute to get up and going. I never even noticed the slowness until i got a MacBook with much worse specs that blew it away.
So I decided to run TechTool Deluxe and see what happened. My iMac did great until the Volume Structure. I repaired it a good five times. The last two times it couldn't find anything to fix and it is still failing!
I don't want to have to buy DiscWarrior (i think thats right), or reformat my drive, mainly because i haven't the foggiest on how to do that. Any options available to me besides these? And do you think the slowness is more due to a growing amount of files, or maybe even a *virus* *gasp*, or to the failing structure?

Unfortunately, I think that Disk Utility is being dishonest with me.
I've been having some trouble with my Macbook Pro locating the startup folder in restarts (sometimes I get the flashing question-mark folder unless I hold down option and manually reselect OS X as the startup volume), and I noticed something very interesting (that's probably unrelated to my problem) when repairing permissions.
Disk Utility indicates the same EXACT problems... and the same EXACT repairs... EVERY single time I run Repair Permissions. I copy and pasted the results of Permissions Repair into Microsoft Word documents and looked at the word counts, and they're always exactly the same 546 words, and the same items that are repaired.
How is it possible that the same items are always broken if they're supposedly being repaired? I run the Permissions repair over and over and over again... not doing anything else with the computer in between, and this still happens. I tried restarting, but that didn't change anything. This is the output that Disk Utility constantly gives me

This post may be in the wrong spot and if it is I am sorry.
I have a sticky trackpad on my unibody Macbook. I received my box to send it in for repairs however I do not want to send in my hard drive being that I have sensitive data on there and they could easily work around my password if they really wanted to. Do you think I could just remove my hard drive and send it in? Is my hard drive necessary to send in?

I have a MBP1,1 completely updated and OS 10.6.4 is now experiencing repeated hanging sessions where the beach ball shows up for 20 seconds at a time. I tried repairing the disk and repairing permissions, both with the disc upon startup and just running OS X normally. However, each time I repair, the same 3 files are always fixed and a 4th file that was not being able to be repaired at all. I don't think it's RAM problem because Windows runs smoothly, but this issue is frustrating. Should I just reinstall OS X.

I've got a Headroom Headphone Total Bithead mobile Amp., 2.66 MacPro, and Sennheiser HD650's (that are hard to drive). The amp. has a high and low gain switch. The low gain sounds better, but I can't get enough vol. when on low gain. I've got iTunes level up as high as it can go. I've played around with Sound prefs. and the Audio/Midi sound levels. They all seem to actually be the same vol. control.
I also see that iTunes, under "Get Info" has an individual vol. adjustment, but I'm not sure if I really want the sound files to be pumped up for when I use them on my iPhone.

When I unplug the power cord from my MacBook (unibody - late 2008), the battery icon in Mac OS X stops updating it's level and the icon does not change. The menu says that it is running on power adapter even when it is unplugged and that the computer is not charging. The hardware battery indicator continues to show the correct battery level. Normally I should get a warning when the battery is about to die (running on emergency power) but I don't, instead it just runs out of battery and shuts down.

Excluding sitting outside in the sun or in very dark rooms, what level do you usually keep your MBA brightness level at and what kind of battery life do you get? I've got mine set to about 65%, haven't used it enough to know what kind of life I get.

I have a brand new MacBook ( < 1 month old ). I usually leave it plugged in and sleeping on my desk, and open it up to use it. After about a day of this, it will still say the battery is fully charged, and the light on the MagSafe is green, but the batter display shows 99% (or 98%, 97%, 96%). If I unplug it and use it for a bit, and the plug it in again, the battery will charge back up to 100% (and then the whole process will begin again). I love my MacBook, and want to make sure this behavior is normal.

I normally have my MBP on full (or mostly full) volume, but when I plug in headphones, I drop it down to the absolute lowest (or one up from that) level. Anything higher than that is deafening with my headphones. Normally my MBP automatically dropped it down to about that level whenever I plugged in headphones, but recently its only been dropping it down to the halfway point. This causes momentary deafness as I hit play on my iTunes, forgetting its only halfway down, and additional deafness from the clicking as I frantically hit Fn-F4 to lower the volume. Is there a way I can set the default level that OS X drops the volume to when I plug in my headphones?

i keep my MPB on 1/16 brightness level in low light, and it took me more than a month to get used to. What is the highest level of brightness you can tolerate in low light conditions?
I dont want to sound too sensitive but sometimes it looks almost too bright even on min settings.

I am at a printing company with 4 Mac workstations (10.5.8) working from a Mac server (10.4.11). The system has worked great for a couple years until the last month or so. Now when working at a workstation and opening more than one folder on the server, both windows revert to the server level. It drives me crazy when I need to copy something from one folder to another. Now I have to have only one window open, copy file to desktop, open new folder, copy or move file to new folder, delete desktop file. Permissions have been repaired on all stations and aliases have been recreated.

I bought the Apple Rechargeable Battery kit and like the whole idea but have noticed that the batteries never seem to reach 'full' charge. I use them primarily in my Magic Mice and the Bluetooth link at the top of the screen never shows them having a 100% charge. It's usually in the 70 to 80% range.

Will VMWare Fusion run comfortably (aka: not sluggish) on the base level 13.3" MBP ?
Or does it need more (fill in the blank) to be zippy enough for comfort?
