Mac Pro :: How To Handle Switching Between Systems

Oct 7, 2009

I have my Mac Pro 2.8 8 core as my main machine. And my MBP 17 as my 'mobile' workstation when I'm on the road or out of the studio. I back up my MP system and files using CCC to an external drive. Usually I manually copy just the working folder of files that I need to my MBP and work away. When I get back to the studio I manually copy the same folder back to my MP. The question is.. is it ok to boot off my MP System + files backup off the external drive while connected to my MBP? And work off it. Both have system 10.5.7 installed. Will there be any problems with booting off essentially a MP configured system while working off the MBP's hardware. i.e., will there be any conflicting system files that may get confused and screwed up?

If it was safe, then I could essentially cloned back from the MP external sys+files back up - Back - on the MP. Just wanted to get some opinions and advice from others who probably have similar dual workstation & mobile machine set-ups. Just wondered how you handle the switching between systems? I just don't want to risk cloning back from the external to the MP and risk screwing the whole setup and configs! Otherwise I might just do what I have been doing and just manually copy the files/folders I need on the MBP. Do the work and then only just copy this folder back on the MP. Without any full system drive clones.

Final Cut Pro X :: How To Handle Audio

Sep 11, 2014

Still working on getting audio exported to an AAF, and having problem doing this.  So, how FCPX is handling my audio. When it's on the timeline, is it being conformed to the frame rate of the video?

When audio is exported, does FCPX force it to conform to the video frame rate in the project settings, audio properties, or both?  Or does it allow the audio to export at whatever rate the original media is at?

I export an XML from FCPX, then open that with X2Pro and it makes an AAF file, but a report tells me that   "Conform rates are not supported. The Conform rate at 01:04:49.23 has been ignored."  So when I go to that timecode, all I see is video at 24p and a detached audio piece at 23.98.  Why are these different?

Hardware :: How Will The IPad Handle Files

Jan 27, 2010

With the prominence of iWork at the iPad unveiling today, the question arises: How will the iPad (or iPhone OS) handle document storage and manipulation? Where will new documents that are created on the iPad be saved? Will individual documents appear as icons on the homepage next to app icons (a la bookmarks)?

I'm hoping Apple has a plan in the works to develop folders for the OS that can store files. This would allow for easier handling of PDF files and such as well.

MacBook Pro :: Slim Sleeve / Handle

Jul 7, 2009

I'm thinking of getting the new 13-inch MacBook Pro soon, but I'm wondering about cases and bags. I was looking around (not hard, and only online thus far), but I haven't stumbled upon and sleeves with handles. The Incase Sleeve Plus is still too big and bulky (strictly speaking, I mean appearance, not actual size and weight; one without a flap going over it, just a zipper).

Software :: Programs Are Quitting On Me Whenever It Seems Too Much For The Ram To Handle?

Feb 27, 2010

so basically programs are quitting on me whenever it seems too much for the ram to handle, not sure if thats the case but certain webpages and programs work but when i go to craigslist or other sites, it lags while its thinking and then quits. also dashboard client quits every time i open it. when i watch videos at a completely unprompted time the video will just pause and the spinning coloured wheel will pop up and it will basically be frozen for about 30 seconds, this happens every 30min or so.

a week ago i had a problem where this lag occurred then eventually i could not load/start the mac at all but after very helpful tips from your techs i reinstalled osx while archiving all my files but there is still a definate issue.this is the link to that question if at all helpful[URL]have also freed up some HD space, i have over 30 gb's free, and before the dashboard crashes, my istat widget tells me i have around 2.5-3 gb's free of RAM so im not too sure what the problem is, maybe i should just wipe everything and start fresh? i dont really want to do this so if anyone has an idea, i would love to hear from you.

OS X :: Does Leopard Handle Computer Units Correctly

Oct 16, 2007

I'm not a developer so I haven't had any experience with Leopard builds. Can anyone who had the privilege of trying it out tell me how computer units are handled? Specifically, I'm talking about definition of kilo/mega/... prefixes and 10^3 vs. 2^10 mixups that make harddrives / usb sticks / optical media appear smaller than they actually are, etc.

My guess would be everything is still the same, because fixing this would probably be mentioned somewhere and because we have been using units incorrectly for a while now (frankly most other operating systems haven't fixed this either, so I'm not expecting much), but still it's better to ask .

PowerPC :: Does G4 Handle YouTube Videos Smoothly?

Feb 1, 2009

I currently have a powermac g4 gigabit ethernet model. It has a 400mhz cpu, 1gb RAM, and an ati rage pro video card with 16mb video memory. When I try to watch youtube videos (or any other online videos), it is choppy. I am looking into purchasing a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver. It would have a 1.4 ghz sonnet PPC cpu, 1 GB Ram, and an upgraded video card (I think ati) with 64mb video memory. I can get this quicksilver system for 250CDN.

Do you think that the quicksilver will be able to handle youtube videos better. Do you think it will be a major overall increase in preformance. I want to run flash cs3/cs4 on it. Currently on my gigabit ethernet model, flash cs4 runs pretty slow. In the end, do you think I will notice a overall increase in everything I do (including video streaming)? Please let me know if you think the quicksilver is a good upgrade.

Also, I need all of my staff to have access to the same "cloud" server, as well as some satellite workers.

Someone recommended an NAS enclosure with multiple hard drives...Is this my best option? And if so, what are the best NAS servers out there?

Applications :: Clipboard Manager To Handle Shortcuts / Abbreviations

Oct 6, 2010

I have been searching online for a few days now for a clipboard manager that can handle shortcuts/abbreviations. I do a lot of copy and pasting frequently used templates into forms for work and right now, it's not working the way I want it to. Currently, I use "Clips" as a solution. It works great... sometimes. I have submitted a ticket twice about my problem and no one seems to get back to me. What happens is that I will type my abbreviation and then it will either paste what I want in place of it, or not. If it doesn't, I have to restart "Clips" to get it to work again. Driving me insane when it stops multiple times during my sessions of filling out forms. I have about 5 phrases that I keep saved with an abbreviation as a shortcut.
