New to forums. Just purchased a first gen(2006) mac pro off ebay and found out it had a x1900 for a video card, I have a 8800gt in my old comp(hackintosh) but tried removing the ati card and installing 8800gt and no luck. Could anyone reccomend me a video card that would work maybe out of the box and that isnt too expensive, really wanna spend 100$-150$ max.
View 3 RepliesI just purchased my first Mac... a used Mac Pro...2 x2.66 dual core with 8 gb of ram and a 7300GT video card. (built Aug 2007) I want to upgrade the video card. I have tried to follow earlier postings, but need a bit more clarification... It appears that the 8800GT mac version is the only recommended card, but Apple no longer sells them. I can still find these 1st gen cards on eBay for approx $250-280. I have also read where others of you have installed new cards, such as the 4870, in your 1st gen mac, but using these newer cards seems to require some "flashing" of the card or other such tweaks--which, unfortunately, I am not that familiar with. With the 8800GT, it seems you can just swap out the cards, update the drivers and you are good to go... am I wrong in thinking that the newer cards are more difficult to get up and running?

View 14 Replies View Relatedso apparently my G5 needs a video card. I was not booting and wouldn't shut down. I reinstalled tiger but no difference. it will boot in safemode but I get lines across the display. they are in "groups of three" small squiggly lines.
Apple store says they think its video card but they will not support it because its "vintage"... I guess "computer years" are similar to dog years the card it came with is GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256mb ram. OWC has a Radeon 5770 with 1G of ram for 270.00 but this card is not compatible with my machine. it says it needs 10.6 or later... but I cannot upgrade the OS cuz leopard requires Intel processor.
so my question is, if a 1G card is 270.00... one that is compatible with my machine should be less I would think? also, even If I could find a compatible 1G card, I think it would be like having a Ferrari and only using 1st gear you know? cuz I would be bottle necked at the processors.. I would think? so what is compatible with the G5 but more ram than the current 256mb?

So I'm looking to upgrade my video card for my 1,1 '06 Mac Pro, I do some light gaming (TF2, L4D, etc) but my bigger interest is Folding@home. So for this reason I'm thinking 8800GT would be a great card to move up to (I don't want to drop the cash for a 285GTX). The only problem is I'm not sure how to find one that will work in a Mac Pro 06. I know Apple store had one model for older Mac Pro's and one for newer ones. Is it possible to flash a PC model 8800GT into an old Mac Pro? I'm comfortable flashing cards and such, but I just want to make sure it can be done. Also, I'll need to find a BIOS for it.

The reason I am upgrading the stock card is I cant handle the grainy look on my photos after using my same moniter with my new macbook pro. Also I am going to be using my bootcamp vista side to play bluray and hd dvds. I recently purchased the new buffalo dual external drive but the images are blury and after a hd video test my graphics card failed misserably. Can someone point me in the right direction. I want to spend around 275-300 shipped. My lcd display supports hdmi and all recent standards.

I want to add a Airport Extreme card to my first generation (2006) Mac Pro. My serial number is G86380EKUPZ. Which Model #/Part # card would I need and where can I find them? I called my local Apple store and they told me that they could install it for me but they aren't allowed to order the part...? Weird. Also, while I'm asking, I'm interested in upgrading my graphics card. I read somewhere that the ATI Radeon HD 3870 will work. Is there anything else you guys could recommend? I'm gonna be working in Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.
View 7 Replies View RelatedOk so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?

I've been given a PowerBook G3. I'm not sure which version it is or anything. But its a PowerBook G3 because it says on the screen. How do I find out exactly what machine I've been given and what wireless card to have a look for. I wouldn't mind spending a couple of quid on ebay for an old second hand airport card just for fun really. Its got os9 on atm. I've got an old osx10.1 disk somewhere I might try and update it a little.

Having looked in the Apple Store online, I can't see any internal cards, just base stations. I looked up the Airport Extreme Card, which I thought would solve my problem, but from what I could see that is only compatible with older Macs.

It seems the PC-world's reluctance to move on from PCMCIA is slowing down progress in this area.

Well I got rid of the quicksilvers since they died. Power supplys gave out and took the motherboards, So I sold what was left on EBAY.

I see here that my Mac Pro (Early 2008) is compatable with:
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600
ATI Radeon HD 4870
It looks like in many cases there's two versions, and the mac version costs about 10x as much on ebay and in stores. Is that accurate, or is one of these models mac and pc compatable, and therefore the laws of supply and demand work in my favour?
(fyi: I just want the cheapest one, I don't do heavy GPU work)
I have a lot of photos and a few videos on iPhoto and Mobile Me. If I send the videos using iPhoto to FaceBook they work fine, but not if I just send out the link (tell a friend), the videos don't play. They get a prompt that says install quicktime, but then it still doesn't work. I did an online chat with support and the person told me to use iMovie and how to do that. So, question one is, is the problem with sending video through iPhoto that the file is not compatible with other computers? Question two is, should I be sending the video through iMovie?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of videos that I recorded on my windows computer, they're in an uncompressed AVI format (huge files). Since I wanted to use iMovie 09 for the editing I decided to convert them to mp4 using VisualHub (to compress them and so they would work with iMovie) and they seemed to work fine, I could still see the video on Quicktime. The problem is that I still can't add them to iMovie. Whenever I add one of these videos as mp4 or dv (I've tried both) they go through the process of adding them to iMovie (copying, creating thumbnails, etc.) and then when it's finished, that's it. No video is actually added to the event. It happens all the time no matter what other options I change when converting the file. And by the way, I noticed the "Show All Clips" option at the bottom of the iMovie main window, it's not that. Anyway, here's the info on one of the files (from the Quicktime X info page of the video):
